It's not just intelligence, but also empathy & heart. God bless these beautiful creatures. I also wonder if the whale would have done the same for a seal or a sea lion?
It's amazing that the whale saved her from the shark. It's even more amazing that he remembered her a year later and interacted with her the way he did.
no video evidence of the shark in any of the videos. Also if there was a shark she wouldnt have left her legs dangling in the water when she got in the boat. I call bs and everyone bought into it haha
@@johnmccormack2046 No footage of the shark because she said it was only while turning out of glimpse from her eye that she recognized it - and then the whale immediately picked her up on his face. Those wales were still too close to the boat and protecting it & her when her feet were still dangling in the water - that shark would not have dared an attack within the first minute.

This is a phenomenon called anthropomorphisizing. Meaning you project human characteristics onto animals. This animal is nowhere near human except that it is a mammalian vertebrate with above average empathy. But hey can't stop the trained seals from clapping for fish (likes)
In a couple thousand years, if humanity hasn't ended itself, we'll probably be able to manufacture higher-level intelligent life out of octopi, whales, dolphins, pigs, etc. over relatively short timelines (like maybe a hundred years). For example, a watered-down version we could try today: Background - a certain species of octopus is capable of passing knowledge between members, but they aren't capable of passing knowledge down generationally because of the strong instinct mothers have to protect an egg clutch until they hatch, never leaving to hunt or eat and in experiments even refusing food provided to it. She always dies right after they hatch and they must all fend for themselves and learn via trial by fire. Experiment - If we just shoot the mother with some sort of dart-delivery mechanism that injects vital nutrients into it, say once a week or something, what would happen? Would she still just die? Would she live on and teach her young, potentially accelerating their growth & development and permanently altering their species' evolutionary timeline? Would she just eat a bunch of her own kids and then die for seemingly no reason? Lotta ethical and moral questions arise from experiments like these, but fuck that noise how cool would it be to help evolve intelligent dolphin people or sentient land-squids? I sure hope we don't nuke ourselves to the stone age so we can maybe find out one day! Heck maybe that's how we'll end our own species, by enabling one superior to evolve beyond control (that isn't an AI singularity).
@@DenizOzkaynak Changing their intelligence into something we can more easily understand isn’t necessary. These animals are perfectly intelligent for their world. I think we should just try harder to understand them.

Whales are like elephants of the sea. So much emotion! Loyalty, empathy and gentleness. We humans should take a lesson from these God given creatures.❤
Yes, elephants of the sea! Recently saw video of a female elephant trying to shove a rhino stuck in mud out to safety AND a pack of lions were closing in. She wasn't able to move the exhausted rhino and ultimately left it to the lions. But she tried with everything she had. That was true altruism and courage.
Sorry your god created nothing. Whales are one of the most obvious proof of evolution out of the animal kingdom. Get an education and learn about it instead of being delusional.
I know it's easy to forget but humans are the most altruistic species on the planet. We are the only ones that actively work to prevent other animals from dying/going extinct. Mind you in some cases we're also the reason some animals go extinct but at the same time, more species have completely died out than currently exist
I'm actually in tears.... this is one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard. This is the relationship we should foster with all creatures on earth
My own tears are not so far. I am sure there is a kind of special link between us, mammals coming from the sea, and sea mammals. Something wich is different than links we have with other mammals. 😮😊
I know everybody speaks about privilege, but the word you're looking for is probably luck. noun a special right, advantage, or immunity granted or available only to a particular person or group.
But it's just an exaggerated story by a woman with no scientific credentials and blown out of proportion by a media apparatus that wants to sensationalize a story of cross species altruism. I mean you can get excited about an elderly woman swimming with whales that was possibly near a shark, maybe, but it kinda just makes you look gullible.
Whales are often documented saving other animals from predators. They are empathetic towards animals other than their own species which is a sign of high intelligence.

Whales are the most caring creatures in the ocean. I was snorkeling with 2 friends off the shore of San Clemente Island in California when I was in the military. Two gray whales put themselves between us and some sharks until we got out of the water. That was both scary(sharks) and beautiful (whales)at the same time. This whale really must have thought -- in whatever way a whale thinks -- "I just can't bare to watch this poor thing get eaten!" and that is pretty special. Some humans do not even care that deeply about the other animals around them.

IDK if it's true, but I heard about someone doing a study and using electrodes to measure animals brain waves when they are exposed to humans. They have the same reaction to us that we do to puppies and children. We're babies to them.
As a surfer, this has happened to me once with dolphins that swam around me at a small distance. Loving an animal is sort of like expressing gratitude to God for His creation and appreciating what God has given us. His creation is even greater than we originally realize when we come to know it’s not just about us humans. The mammals that He made can love too, they have their own feelings and emotions. Just like how much they love their babies and how they mourn when one dies. Whale mothers who have a calf die will carry their dead baby on their head for days and you know they are grieving. I had a toy poodles who lost two puppies and she grieved so bad that our whole family were crying with her when she finally put the dead baby in my hand and dove in my arms and buried her head and literally sobbed. I learned that dogs learn words and they can read us like a book. Our horses and cats have shown great intelligence also.

But that’s not why altruism exists in nature. It was proven multiple times that this behaviour is the most effective one evolutionary. It exists because of the whales unconscious egoistic instinct to reproduce and survive by itself. Indirect it is indeed expecting something in return. Because of this video whales in general receive more love from humans so it’s survival strategy worked out here very well.

All animals are uniquely designed by how they differ, i think the bible even mention whale swallowing a man in order to save him then spitting him after 3 days in the shores.

We keep looking up in search of "intelligent life" when actually we share a planet with so much intelligence right here on Earth.
Correct, although the intelligence is not usually found walking on the pavement 🙂
In a couple thousand years, if humanity hasn't ended itself, we'll probably be able to manufacture higher-level intelligent life out of octopi, whales, dolphins, pigs, etc. over relatively short timelines (like maybe a hundred years).
For example, a watered-down version we could try today:
Background - a certain species of octopus is capable of passing knowledge between members, but they aren't capable of passing knowledge down generationally because of the strong instinct mothers have to protect an egg clutch until they hatch, never leaving to hunt or eat and in experiments even refusing food provided to it.

Not "one of" the largest living creatures, but THE largest living creature of ALL TIME. There has never been an animal, in the history of this planet, larger than a blue whale.
Think of how CONSCIOUS these creatures have to be to maintain such gentle contact for so long, with all that mass... They are fully aware in every way, and think about various factors in executing plans.. You can see it in their eyes and actions and reactions to various stimuli. Ocean life is insanely smart.

Right? She’s so blessed to have had that interaction, experience, and relationship with an aquatic being. So so blessed ❤
female biology must stop birthing criminals animals which hunt other animals ! warning
Why do I feel like her mama sent this whale? Especially with one of the last things she said was not to be eaten by one, maybe she was teasing because she knew something.
And she recognizes that divulging too much will only result in the exploitation for profit by some of us. That tranquil spot would exist no more, and likely the whale, too.
Absolutely right & I wish the media outlets would focus on bringing uplifting stories like this rather than the usual bad news every day.
Yes - all animals feel and have empathy. Jane Goodall understood this in the face of scientists who refused to believe that chimpanzees could feel emotion. David Greybeard and Jane Goodall had the most beautiful connection. What an empathic magnificent loving experience you had with your dear friend! ❤❤
Although chimps are a bit like us - some of them are nasty B's.
"How do you hug a whale?" But you found a way. Thank you for sharing your story. Such empathy & altruism from a Huge & dangerously Strong creature being so gentle & protective. Incredible.
As many bad people has hurt whales… they still show us kindness…. It’s truly saddens me that people can’t look past their own nose to see how wonderful these creatures….no not creatures.. that’s wrong… how wonderful these beings are….just cause they look different, act different, live in a different place and speak a different language does not make them any less like us.. we all could learn a lesson here..
As long as greed lives in the heart of us all, we will continue to wreak havoc onto all things on this planet.
Of course I agree but I also ask, why should we not have the same empathy for pigs or cows, or any other living creature?
@@jdoniach because there's too many of them to be slaughtered! Whales are getting extinct man! I guess you understand when I say our livestock ain't gonna extinct before us anyway!🤦🏽♂️😬🙄

Because humanity as a whole has exploited the whales for oil and meat for centuries.
That's because they know which of 'us' are the bad guys and who are the ones with loving souls who adore them.
the whales dont know what we're doing, they probably know the correlation between humans and small boats but probably not a whaling boat.
I have tears; I love him, too. What a beloved creature and what a glorious experience. They are so beautiful. So beautiful.

You know the name of the game
A fantastic example of "I'm trying to save you lady, stop being clueless!" "Now I gotta come back and check in on you". If we were good stewards as we were placed here to be, we'd have more interactions like this, minus the danger.
And the discovery of oil saved them from certain extinction. Just in time.
Oil isn't so evil after all.
Yes. Amen!
Yet all humans still allow whale hunting via political leaders & apathy re immense poaching for greed. Watch NGs Sea of Shadows film as an example of human greed by majority.

Beautiful!! I snorkelled above a southern right whale once with her yearling … i couldnt stop talking about her… such an amazing experience. Your story is just wonderful
This story still makes me tear up hearing about how the whale kept her safe. Anyone who says *_their_*_ just animals_ is an idiot beyond compare, and humans should be the Earths healers, menders and protectors.
I agree. There are a lot of animals out there that will surprise you with their compassion and bravery with humans. It's up to us to try to make this world a better place for the animals and for the future of the human race.
So you’re vegan then?
Why we are you tearing things up though? That sounds like an innapropriate emotional reaction. You should see a therapist.
(I'm joking. I'm joking!)
Only Scientists that love butchering spread lies that animals don't think nor feel. That way they can continue torturing Life Beings for their guess work.
I say what I'm about to say, with note that I am a Christian. There are so many Christians these days, that say this; that animals are *less than* humans. Did you know that this has not always been the case? Early in christian history, even in Jew history, the religious institutions taught that humans had equals. They would often equate most cetacean authority to that of ourselves. After seeing that authority get exercised, I have to believe it, myself: that humans do have authoritative equals.
I can't believe that these whales are still hunted today, they are the most stunning creatures I've seen . They are awesome 👌
I know I hate when animals are hunted
@@lathafalls7675 me too and the fact that those people who are killing then make that stupid excuse that they hunt them for experimentation is a huge lie because they are eating them. They’ve been told to stop eating them because they contain huge amounts of mercury
I wish I could help completely stop Japan who says they catch whales for scientific study but have ships that have whale harvesting equipment like a factory onboard... Plus they drag huge nets on the sea bottom and pulverize all structures, it's found completely ruined. Look it up on UA-cam... there is video. A cam is attached to a dragnet showing the destruction. Then there is Norway (or one of the Scandinavian countries) and probably Russia keeps it legal and I can imagine China, even Eskimos shouldn't be allowed to kill a single whale 🐋. ⁸🐳. All those animals up north have a hard enough time keeping numbers up...
@@lathafalls7675 Hunting animals isn't the problem per say. It's the industrial hunting and hunting for fun, that's fucked up. Hunting is part of the nature but nature only does whats necessary and sports- or industrial hunting isn't.

I can imagine the way the whale saw you was the same way a person sees a lost kitten, something small and vulnerable that you just can't help but try to save ♥
Exactly what I was thinking!
The whale probably had a very similar emotional reaction to that "helpless, small" human than we have to a small and cute animal.
I have once caught and picked up baby hares who were harrassed by crows. They probably also were afraid I might hurt them, just like this scientist was afraid when the whale started pushing her away, but I only wanted to help them.
