I've seen it first hand, the person standing next to the elephant tugs on the elephants ear manipulating it into a trained action from the trunk. Sorry to ruin it for u but you will never see an elephant painting without the handler stood next to it usually on the far side from the audience.
Omg. He drew it in 3D. And see how steady and accurate his brush was as he retraced the lines! Unbelievable! Incredible! Super artistic and intelligent!
Tbh, they don't look in a bad shape to me. You know, every year, tons of children are abused by their parents, that doesn't mean all parents abuse their children. Same goes for zoos and nature reserves, some mistreat their animals, some don't. Elephants are actually really smart creatures and I think I've hear of studies proving they can feel pleasure doing things like painting. Plus, looking at the communication means they had in African countries 10 years ago (when this video was posted), I don't think those elephants caretakers knew about their capacity to learn how to paint before seeing them into action. Rather than being tortured to learn, it seems more likely to me that they simply imitated humans after seeing them paint because they found it entertaining. We only saw 15 minutes of them without context, so we can't tell for sure how things are for them behind the curtains.
Mowd Cridhe Bunny Well, not really. I can understand how maybe an elephant would enjoy picking up a paintbrush and slapping some paint onto a canvas but there is absolutely no way that this elephant was painting that picture of its own volition. As smart as they are, elephants don’t have the brainpower necessary to conjure up abstract representations of real world things like that. There is only one explanation: she was forcibly trained to do that. Remember that elephants aren’t like dogs; they won’t simply do whatever you say in favor of food. Instead, elephants must be “broken,” typically through corporal punishment or being confined into very small cages until they bend to the will of their master. If you see an elephant doing literally any kind of trick, gimmick, or unnatural interaction with humans, 99% of the time they’re doing it because they have no other choice.
I noticed that the first two elephants were drawing essentially the same picture. Interesting! That makes me think this is trained behavior, rather than spontaneously created art. It is remarkable, regardless.
If you saw what they do to make these elephants to just stand their, it would break your heart and probably infuriate you. They are not doing the painting. The mahout, hiding beside front legs where you cant see him, is guiding her trunk around. This is nothing but a tourist trap and cruelty to animals.

I feel so sad about seeing that TORTURE STICK (bullhook) under the painting stand. Elephant sees it all the time so (s)he knows that it’s goint to be used if the master is unhappy with the elephant’s work. This cruelty must be stopped.
6:54 - That moment when you realize you are sat watching an elephant paint a picture of itself, whilst the Carpenters is playing in the background, whist you are on lockdown from the global pandemic.
I saw an elephant paint in Thailand. The trainer guided him the whole time, literally steerimg the head while the elephant kept his trunk stiff. On this video, you don't quite see what the care taker is doing, but he seems to be always standing right next to the elephant when she paints something. My guess some kind of steering is going on there as well. Maybe the elephants are okay with it, but it's certainly a tourist show and I would only buy / support such a picture if I knew for sure that it was drawn without human "blueprint" and that the paint (and whatever training took place) wasn't harmful.
I think each elephant is trained in a specific pattern so when they paint they only make that pattern for a reward. When untrained elephants are left to paint by themselves, they tend to make abstract little flecks, splotches, and lines instead of trees and such.
Regardless of training or how intelligent elephants are, there's little evidence that they have any innate cognition for abstract images and relationships. In other words I doubt the elephant would even regard any relationship between it's own kind and the two dimensional image it drew on paper. But I'd be interested in reading studies on the subject.
Same, like I’m not against animals being trained as long as the animal is happy, healthy, and the training isn’t abusive or in any way detrimental to the animal, and that the animal has lots of free time to just chill
K. Lo No it not .... it’s fucking sad and cruel. You don’t think he just picked up a paint brush and started painting do you. no of course not he was most likely beaten into it

I’m sobbing, the self awareness of these beautiful creatures. Humans are atrocious and I see no hope for our species.
Same, like I’m not against animals being trained as long as the animal is happy, healthy, and the training isn’t abusive or in any way detrimental to the animal, and that the animal has lots of free time to just chill

we don't know but normally, painting elephants cannot be pressured or else they won't like to paint... if this elephant is an expert of painting, it may only be because he was set free to paint something...
those who are pressured to paint are normally not competent at all and will be less productive... yet this elephant seems pretty fine but as I said, these are my theories, we cannot be a hundred pourcent sure
Dark? You can not get Darker then this. forcing a wild animal to paint. How much beating goes into training?
@@keepwildinthewild Thanks. I just watched 2 mins of the link you sent...had to stop...couldn't bear to watch any more.
What an incredible elephant she is! The precision is remarkable...every move she makes on that canvas/paper is perfect.
I just love the way the elephant takes the brush so slowly and starts to draw with so much care.
It's amazing what you can make an animal or a little child to do. Isn't it fun to watch bears running around in the circus like their clowns. They really look like they're having fun & plus we get to enjoy watching them. Animals & children are here to please us & they really do.
Mate, the elephant just holds the brush. It looks gentle, because the carer must aim carefully with the line.
elephant is unhappy that people are cruel!!!!! poor elehant's....verrry upset!!!!!!!!!!!!🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬
YOU CAN HEAR THE ELEPHANTS CRY. THE GUY BEHIND HOLDS THE ELEPHANTS EAR AND BETWEEN THEIR FINGERS IS A NAIL THAT THEY PIERCE INTO THE EAR IF THEY DO NOT DO IT RIGHT.
(sorry for caps its copy-paste)
I StM I
Oh really!?
And do you have proof that the man was holding the elephants ear?
Didn't even look at the comments until i felt uneasy watching.
When you realize the background music is the “hello darkness my old friend” song
Simon & Garfunkel - The Sound of Silence
No. It's the Carpenter - every shalala every something I forgot
It's Yesterday once more
Yeah i realised that too
I was taking the video seriously and then it started playing so I cracked up lmao
Paints better than I could. Amazing. I hope the elephants are treated kindly.
That depressing moment you realize an elephant draws better than you.
Ikr xD
XD. XD. XD
Oh the sadness
The agony!
Oh the dignity!
I wonder how many people know how cruelly they are treated in training. The truth is shocking to say the least. Do not be fooled by these people.
@ Cynthia Stogden. Dear Cynthia Stogden, please enlighten me. Thank you. I like elephants. They are not cruel like lions and tigers.
@@bhimsenluchooman4046 please read all the posts on here. There is a long one by some one who explains it all eloquently. Good that you lome elephants.
@ Cynthia Stogden. Dear Cynthia Stogden. Thank you. I will read and also google search on the subject. Happy new year to you and your family.
Bhimsen Luchooman lions and tigers are far from cruel, it’s the circle of life
Some are actually trained, not hit or anything. And if the elephant was hit or anything, the people could get arrested for animal cruelty. So yeah. But that's just my opinion.
For all those commenting on how amazing this is, you have absolutely no idea what disgusting treatment they receive behind the scenes.
All you have to do is search up the "Phajaan".
Oracle thank u 😢
their tusks are removed as well
Thank you Oracle. As I watch the trick, I see how precise the elephant uses its trunk. It is controlled by the trainer!!!! I used to watch captive wild animals with fascination with their tricks until I realize how animal cruelty plays into the picture. Dolphins, killer whales etc. I did Google phajaan. I encourage the viewers to do so themselves. I also would like to hear from the trainers' point of view regarding the practice. And the elephant/human culture in Asia from experts. And the debate from both sides.
This exploitation of elephants, and of wildlife, for human entertainment should be banned and boycott. Very sad.
@@fabgirard1429 I agree with you. But with caution. Let's hear all sides of the debate. Think hunting licenses in developed countries.Trophy hunting in Africa. Commercial harvesting of krill in the southern oceans.
When an elephant can paint better than you…
*That’s actually kind of scary to imagine how unnatural that is and how they can draw a near perfect picture without messing up. I’d hate to know how they trained them to do this.*
Intelligence and cognition is as natural as light from a lamp
Hitler is jealous
supposedly they dont force the elephants to do anything. from reading ive done it sounds like there are plenty of things to mentally enrich an elephant aside from painting, so if it didnt enjoy it theyd have no reason to force it since another elephant very well might rather paint
I'm pretty much sure, they trained like humans. I mean, to develop a talent you need to work hard, but this does not mean that someone will beat you with a whip.
@@wrg_101 They have amazing memories. That’s super useful in painting stuff
Fun fact: that Elephant draws better than me
So true tho

❤real real skills talents and efforts are deeply appreciated elephants are very smart and intelligent animals I'm left speechless draws better than joe gaito wonder how much they charge for the paintings very impressed hope they get the love and respect they deserve love you guys thanks great job you should be amazed and proud way to go !!! Joe
I'm so sorry to let you know that these paintings are not done by the elephants. Yes they are intelligent but painting is not one of their expertise..
Thailand uses elephant for profit and nothing else. Here, the mahout you never see except when he changes the brushes is guiding her trunk around the canvas. As for love and respect, there is none. Elephants are kept in chains and are always being stabbed and scratched with bull hooks.
These elephants were stolen from their mothers around the age of 2 and put through horrible and inhumane training. After they lose their spirits, they learn to follow human commands. I've seen how this is done and it's heart breaking.
elephants are intelligent creatures. Imagine what they feel when theire familiy is killed for their teeth.
Tusk, also that elephant is abused.

@Hornyshark phajaan means
but without abusing and by kind you made them train its really good....beautiful creature ......i love respect animals
It's honestly beyond amazing,,,, but I hope and pray that there's no torture or any form of cruelty involved during the training 😭😭😭
They are severely tortured. They are stolen from their mothers in the wild they are placed 'in

A lot of torture was involved When they were two, They were stolen from their families and had to go through the 'crush;' this video will explain better than I can upsetting footage. ua-cam.com/video/ibTJmYLLNOA/v-deo.html
Amen for that 🙏
@@enricoputrawijaya4591 The elephant is not painting. Maybe a line or two, but the mahout is guiding her trunk and inflicting pain to her ear, and maybe parts of her body to keep her focused and stay put. These elephants are miserable and depressed. This is no life for an elephant, standing there all day in the hot sun 7 days a week, then shackled all night. She should be roaming the jungle with her family. Not stolen from her family in which she was stolen by these people. ua-cam.com/video/s9GIzRPWCow/v-deo.html

Idk why this made me cry but it did. I am a struggling artist and this animal reminded me how natural self expression is ❤️
Es gibt noch wunderbare Sachen. ..Die Vögel bauen mit Perfection ihre Netze. ..Die Bienen bauen auch Waben. .Wer hat sie beigebracht das? ?????
ua-cam.com/video/s9GIzRPWCow/v-deo.html not self expression
It’s not natural. Elephants are not naturally skilled with painting, this one was obviously abused. You should cry for another reason
I wont leap to conclusions of abuse, but clearly painting hearts and her own name isnt natural. An outline of an elephant I can possibly accept, but the additions make it quite clear it's taught to simply copy something.
Still very impressive, but most likely not natural.
HUG YOU TIGHT. 🥰💖🥰
