Sadly i witnessed first hand some of the treatment the Elephants get, they routinely have humans riding on them all day, and the trainer has a sharp tool that he used to stick in the Elephants ears, which were bleeding and seeping. Same with bears and Tigers. The bears were completely shaved and forced to do tricks for a cheering crowd, it was heart wrenching and pitiful watching this almost deformed looking bear parading around just skin and bones. 14yrs ago and I'm just seeing this. I'm pissed...this elephant's uniqueness should have a documentary film for the world to see. Let me go do some research. She's unbelievably talented.
I agree. I see a lot of negative comments on this video, and honestly, I dont know how she was treated. From what i see in this video however, she certainly seems to be genuinely happy to paint. She is literally dancing in between brush strokes. That does not seem like a sign of an abused animal to me. I could be wrong though.
@@burntroses176 why do people assume this. Hurting the elephants wouldnt teach them how to paint, it would teach them to be scared of people. Did the elephant look scared? She was literally dancing in between brush strokes.
This elephant paints better than me But the fact that their forcing the elephant to do this and they probably did somethibg cruel to it.. i mean like.. elephants are almost endangered species?!. They shouldnt be doing that!
I doubt that that they abused them. They are so gentle and good with the elephants. It is ok for them to do that to they are very smart and are usually very good at being taught. If abuse was contained then people would have shut it down already.
Also just because they are vulnerable does not mean they get abused all the time. These people seem to love and care for the elephants. The elephants seem to love them back and seem to love painting.
She is not painting. The mahout hiding beside her front legs takes control of her trunk and maneuvering it around the canvas. Elephants wouldn't even pick up a brush voluntarily for the tip of her trunk has very sensitive nerve endings that it is painful to hold anything for very long there. People need to know that Thailand cruelly uses elephants for profit. The one horrible things that is done here is these youngsters are the result of being torn from their mothers in the wild and put through extreme cruel and inhumane training till they lose their spirits and begin the rest of their lives obeying their human owners. This is not natural behavior for them. They would be running a muck playing with each other and being mischievous. Where they have a nail being pressed into the sensitive part of the ears, they dare not to stray.
Tbh, they don't look in a bad shape to me. You know, every year, tons of children are abused by their parents, that doesn't mean all parents abuse their children. Same goes for zoos and nature reserves, some mistreat their animals, some don't. Elephants are actually really smart creatures and I think I've hear of studies proving they can feel pleasure doing things like painting. Plus, looking at the communication means they had in African countries 10 years ago (when this video was posted), I don't think those elephants caretakers knew about their capacity to learn how to paint before seeing them into action. Rather than being tortured to learn, it seems more likely to me that they simply imitated humans after seeing them paint because they found it entertaining. We only saw 15 minutes of them without context, so we can't tell for sure how things are for them behind the curtains.
Mowd Cridhe Bunny Well, not really. I can understand how maybe an elephant would enjoy picking up a paintbrush and slapping some paint onto a canvas but there is absolutely no way that this elephant was painting that picture of its own volition. As smart as they are, elephants don’t have the brainpower necessary to conjure up abstract representations of real world things like that. There is only one explanation: she was forcibly trained to do that. Remember that elephants aren’t like dogs; they won’t simply do whatever you say in favor of food. Instead, elephants must be “broken,” typically through corporal punishment or being confined into very small cages until they bend to the will of their master. If you see an elephant doing literally any kind of trick, gimmick, or unnatural interaction with humans, 99% of the time they’re doing it because they have no other choice.
I've seen it first hand, the person standing next to the elephant tugs on the elephants ear manipulating it into a trained action from the trunk. Sorry to ruin it for u but you will never see an elephant painting without the handler stood next to it usually on the far side from the audience.
The elephants aren't painting. The mahout is maneuvering her trunk around the canvas. This is a tourist trap. They use elephants for profit and it's not a pleasant life for them.

Suda painted with such careful deliberate strokes. She has that same right brain focus that a human has! I know, I am also an artist. She got deep into it and really enjoyed herself. This was so fun to watch! I am left with sheer amazement at the intelligence and emotion she demonstrated! ❤
I saw an elephant paint in Thailand. The trainer guided him the whole time, literally steerimg the head while the elephant kept his trunk stiff. On this video, you don't quite see what the care taker is doing, but he seems to be always standing right next to the elephant when she paints something. My guess some kind of steering is going on there as well. Maybe the elephants are okay with it, but it's certainly a tourist show and I would only buy / support such a picture if I knew for sure that it was drawn without human "blueprint" and that the paint (and whatever training took place) wasn't harmful.
I think each elephant is trained in a specific pattern so when they paint they only make that pattern for a reward. When untrained elephants are left to paint by themselves, they tend to make abstract little flecks, splotches, and lines instead of trees and such.
Regardless of training or how intelligent elephants are, there's little evidence that they have any innate cognition for abstract images and relationships. In other words I doubt the elephant would even regard any relationship between it's own kind and the two dimensional image it drew on paper. But I'd be interested in reading studies on the subject.
Same, like I’m not against animals being trained as long as the animal is happy, healthy, and the training isn’t abusive or in any way detrimental to the animal, and that the animal has lots of free time to just chill

Suda, you are very great. Now I understood that Elephants do everything perfectly if trained well. But such training should not be painful to the elephants. If they are really tortured to learn this art, it is more painful to the viewers than being excited.
I don't know about these particular elephants, so I wouldn't presume to say how they were treated. But, yes, in conditioning, the "bell" system is well known. Initially a creature is beate or otherwise made to suffer, all the while the bell rings (or it rings at the beginning, I am not sure). After a while, only the bell is rung, and the creature behaves as if it had been beaten, so complies. It's a system that goes back as far, or even further than, the arabian knights etc.. I don't know if it would workl in a painting situation, though, and besides, something like thos could be done more successfully with a rewards system.I'm not surer the elephant is aware it is actually drawing itsalf, either, since it (a 2 dimensional line drawing) requires a primate's mental configuration. But who knows?
This is a wonderful video. Suda should always be protected and treated well. Suda has ushered in a new era for the elephants. Heartiest congratulations to Suda for learning how to draw, paint and write her name in English at a tender age of four. With proper coaching Suda might be able to draw and write more.

If you see an elephant doing literally any kind of trick, gimmick, or unnatural interaction with humans, 99% of the time they’re doing it because they have no other choice.

or they don't need much training and its something they are naturally prone to learn fast and easy to motivate, doubt it though >
Its in captivity what do you call that moron? Heart broken , youre not happy but I am!
ARMY BLINK What makes you think that idiot. People these days always keep accussing innocent videos of being torture.
Absolutely Right brother.
Ana Paula Rocha Campos well, the elephants are in fact tortured in order to make them paint, so that could be one reason.
You can see the sadness in their eyes... Guys, elephants don't have a natural inclination to paint. From our perspective this is a fascinating video, but in truth they are tortured by their trainers in preparation for their paintings and while during. The handler here is most likely employing a hidden nail in their hand and piercing the elephant's ear and tugging it to dictate where to direct the brushstrokes.
If its only entertainment you're here for, then know that this isn't an elephant that can paint, it's a human that can use an elephant to paint-like controlling a video game character.
And perhaps by itself that would be impressive, were there no animal abuse involved.
I love how carefully she puts the brush to the paper
She is beaten if she does it wrong - it is abuse ...
@@montyrayza7220 : Could U learn such like artistic painting after regular beating for a month , No and Never---- even Picasso was not to be able to paint like our Suda, dear. Bravo!
Suda is, perhapse, more artistic a being than Picasso even.
problem is that its always the same picture, meaning that someone has most likely taught the elephant through re-enforcement and that may be far from a pretty sight. You know its from the heart, when the elephant writes, "HELP ME, I am in Chinese re-education program!"
Our Dear Suda is Better than a Master painter, even... Bravo!

for those wondering, the elephant is guided on what to paint by the trainer nudging their ear in the direction thye need to move the brush. they were taught how to paint each image and every elephant can only do one.
that's what I thought
Ratatouille in real life
well i'm still incredibly impressed with both the elephant and the trainer.

@@davidjones-vx9ju of course not, as they don't have trunks...... but Iif they had trunks, they might be capable of doing similar feats with proper training...
Absolutely amazing. I'm applauding this lovely talented elephant. Please I hope they are well taken care of and no ill treatment or torture is meted out to those elephants.
I hope the elephant wasn't tortured when receiving his/her training
They would have been :(
Elephants don't paint or draw - they were trained to do this and sometimes that involves using torture/ physical pain. : (
yeah this is awful
Yes he is, and he is also during this video. The caretaker is hurting him with a pointy stick. Of course they don't show that.
Aw man it's not fair they have to go trough torture just for training :{
Now me, a human, cant even draw a human.
Thank you, Mr. Elephant. Very nice
I really, really hope there is no dark story behind this. This looks too good to the eyes!!! 16 minutes of pure cuteness, bliss.
Definitely is, they'd rather be eating leaves.
No. They are very depressed and miserable. These people bought them from a training camp where they are inhumanely trained to perform for tourists. The paintings are done by the elephants. The mahouts are doing most of the work and are constantly inflicting pain with a nail they have between his fingers. These babies were stolen from their families and I can assure you that the mother has ongoing sadness. Elephants share the same emotions as us. These guys work 7 days a week until closing and are shackled up all night. This video explains it all. It's mostly Spanish but hang on. You'll get it. ua-cam.com/video/s9GIzRPWCow/v-deo.html
we don't know but normally, painting elephants cannot be pressured or else they won't like to paint... if this elephant is an expert of painting, it may only be because he was set free to paint something...
those who are pressured to paint are normally not competent at all and will be less productive... yet this elephant seems pretty fine but as I said, these are my theories, we cannot be a hundred pourcent sure
Dark? You can not get Darker then this. forcing a wild animal to paint. How much beating goes into training?
@@keepwildinthewild Thanks. I just watched 2 mins of the link you sent...had to stop...couldn't bear to watch any more.

Seems fun and all but imagine how they taught the elephant to do that. Lots of torture was propably involved. This is so sad!
@Payton Wright when an elephant bobs it's head like that, it means they are depressed. It most likely was beaten when it was trained to do this
So, when you see an elephant in a large forest attentively listening to Beethoven and moving in time, I guess you assume it was tortured to do that too?
I just love the way the elephant takes the brush so slowly and starts to draw with so much care.
It's amazing what you can make an animal or a little child to do. Isn't it fun to watch bears running around in the circus like their clowns. They really look like they're having fun & plus we get to enjoy watching them. Animals & children are here to please us & they really do.

Suda, you are very great. Now I understood that Elephants do everything perfectly if trained well. But such training should not be painful to the elephants. If they are really tortured to learn this art, it is more painful to the viewers than being excited.
Manasa Keerthi no ingles yes espanish
Look this elephant has focus.Had it felt pain won't have learnt art.
I don't know about these particular elephants, so I wouldn't presume to say how they were treated. But, yes, in conditioning, the "bell" system is well known. Initially a creature is beate
or otherwise made to suffer, all the while the bell rings (or it rings at the beginning, I am not sure).
I wish Suda a happy and a long life and good luck. Thanks.

"proper coaching"???? Get real, beat & torture them to achieve this! The mahout is controlling the Ele's trunk by pressing a nail into it's ear where u can't see it. I’m glad I came to the comments and wasn’t the only one who knew about this elephant. The keepers abused them to teach them how to paint, they would beat them if they didn’t do the correct thing, and eventually the elephant learned how to navigate certain things in order to not get beat. He knew if he drew a line in this way, and not this way, he would be okay.. such a smart fucking animal and its so sad to see that these creatures, that clearly have some sort of thinking process, abused for profit.. money is the root too all evil, and we’re seeing that more and more in everyday things and life..

Like elephants used in the elephant trekking industry, young elephants used for painting must be broken and experience the pain of the phajaan process. Over this time baby elephants are starved, shackled, and beaten, until their spirit is completely broken and will submit to the will of their captors.

It’s not natural. Elephants are not naturally skilled with painting, this one was obviously abused. You should cry for another reason
I wont leap to conclusions of abuse, but clearly painting hearts and her own name isnt natural. An outline of an elephant I can possibly accept, but the additions make it quite clear it's taught to simply copy something.
