Watch Marc replace an indicator stalk on a Citroen C1. This is the same design as the Toyota Aygo and the Peugeot 107 and they all suffer from the same common problem. The internal switches in the indicator stalks wear and this causes a bad connection which results in either the indicator to be inoperable or not work properly.

Really helpful and informative video. My sister in law got charged over £450 at a garage for this repair on her car. I did it for under £20 on our c1. Thanks 👍

Just can't get that circular metal clip off that holds the indicator stalks to the steering column, no matter what I do! Clasps, straps, wiggling, banging - nothing works 🙄

Super useful, but having done this 3 times now, there are some additions that make it much easier…
    1) You don’t need to disconnect the battery. Not on this model.
    2) DO NOT remove the speedo top cowling first. Remove the airbag and steering wheel THEN the cowling (upper and lower). It’s way easier to remove.
    3) After loosening the centre steering wheel not, leave the nut on a few turns while pulling on the steering wheel to remove it. The nut will stop you smacking yourself in the face when the wheel releases.
    4) When removing the ring (between steering wheel and stalk assembly, there are 3 main clips, 9, 12 and 3 o’clock. There are a few other retainer clips, but the 3 big ones do most of the work
    5) Before removing the stalk assembly (by squeezing the circlip with pliers) remove the two 10mm bolts either side of the speedo that hold the speedo assembly. This allows access to the circlip tangs from above. Also worth noting the assembly needs a bit of a tug to remove it once the tangs are squeezed tightly together.
    6) When reinstalling the lower column cowling, insert the lower rear edge ABOVE the lip on the dash sheering column hole.
    7) The two blanking plates that cover the airbag bolts are specific to each side. They look similar but won’t fit if you have the wrong side. May save 10 mins of confusion.
Other than that, great guide. Saved a bunch of cash. 👌

Hey, thanks for your comment. I'm sure some of the people who view this video will find it helpful.
The battery disconnect is part of the manufacturer procedure and good for many DIY'ers as a general rule of thumb when working on similar systems.
Looking back at this video, and many others, I've noticed easier or better ways of doing things.
That's the great thing about this trade. Learn how to do a job.. then learn how to do it better 😅.
Thanks again for your detailed comment.

Sometimes the communication lines within the speedo clock can go faulty and present issues like you describe. In the past we have had to replace the speedo clock. It doesn't require as much strip down as this job so should be manageable. I would take the vehicle to a mechanic to confirm communication error faults first before replacing anything.

I ordered some electrical spray, thought I'd spray some in the electrical plugs just in case its a bad connection. Obviously if that doesn't help I'll try what you suggested mate. Thanks for the advice 🙏 have a great day 👍

no need to disconnect the battery for the airbag, it's not precharged and works only when voltage is applied, disconnecting the battery does nothing whatsoever

Hi, I have just had my Toyota aygo serviced , mot and they said it needed a replacement indicator stalk . I paid 83.52 for this plus everything else , bill was 335.42 .. with in a few days the indicators became intermittent…. Having looked at your video , I’m wonder are the things not connected properly . The garage are saying it’s not their problem as possibly the bulbs have gone. This is not the case as the right hand indicator occasionally works . The garage is a 2 .5 hour journey that carried out the work . How am I to get them to fix this l it surely should be guaranteed . Is there am ombudsman ?

    • @MTMMotorServices
      @MTMMotorServices  2 роки тому

      Hi,
The reason these stalks fail is because the mechanical switches inside the stalk can wear, break or corrode which causes a bad or no connection.
If it has had a new stalk recently and a similar complaint has returned, I would say the repairer that carried out the work has a duty of care to atleast check that its not a faulty part that has been supplied to you. unfortunately that can happen, but that is what warranty is for.
It all depends on the issue you're having now.
If you operate the stalk left and right
You should be able to see flashing indicator lights outside the vehicle, a flashing tell tale on your dash and an audible "tick" sound.
If you can see or hear any of these in the different positions then it's likely the stalk is fine and the issue could be in the dash clock itself.
But your local repairer needs to carry out the correct tests to diagnose.
      Hope this helps you

@@MTMMotorServices many thanks for super quick response. The indicators out side work fine as does the tik tik sound in car .. it's just the flashing light on dash board. ( The right side sometimes lights up)
