Wrap your tone in the dual-voiced wooly, fuzzy goodness that is the BOSS FZ-1w Fuzz pedal! Which voicing will you rock? If you enjoyed this video be sure to like, comment, and subscribe!

If you're a gearhead on a 10-yr waiting list for a boutique pedal (which I may or may not be), it's easy to forget how great and practical Boss pedals are. They're cheap, cheaper used, and I'm fairly certain they're made from adamantium and indestructible. I have 30 year old vintage Boss pedals that work perfectly and sound great, and I have several Waza pedals that do the same. This pedals sounds pretty great. I don't need it, but I'll probably get it while I wait for Analogman to deliver my drive pedal in 2029.

@@Ottophil I used to as well, until we used a Foxx Tone Machine for overdubs (metal band). Now I’m on a stupid chase, and have a ridiculous collection. They’re all different and are, for a lack of a better word, organic.

@@Ottophil fuzz is a take it or leave it kind of sound. Hard to say Jimi Hendrix or the new fuzz king Doyle Bramhall II have bad tone with their fuzz tones. DBII is literally never had a bad sound to me. But as all things to each his own. That said American Musical Supply had a better no talking video and the tone was not all treble and fizzy sounding, it sounded like a good fuzz face.

While I wasn't buying into the whole Tone Bender shuffle, this I def like.To my mind, with so many solid TB clones available from hundreds of builders( past and present), there was no point for actual players to get excited about that limited run. This ,however, is unique and singular enough to join the limited number of Boss effects on my boards.

Some pedals run for a long time on a 9V battery and some don't. For example, Big Muffs and TS-9s run for practically forever on a 9V and change characteristic with a dying battery. With this being an analog circuit, can you reliably run this new Boss Fuzz on a battery and have it last long?

With that said, as a guitar player who generally dwells at the low end of the gain spectrum this was my first fuzz pedal pedal purchase and it's right up my street. I love how I can dial it to play good and clean(ish) and then dig in hard to let the filth flow and entropy reign! - it's the perfect fuzz for me; well worth the investment.

A lot of gear rarely gains much once you account for inflation. Pedals are definitely amongst that category, unless there's real history attached to that pedal, the value increases under inflation. What you'd have spent on a dozen of these would be far better invested elsewhere.

  • @duffman18

I have the Behringer version of this, which is an exact clone of the original Boss fuzz pedal, but it only cost me like £20. I've paid ludicrous amounts for fuzz pedals over the years. I have several grands worth of fuzz pedals, with some costing like £200-300 each. And you know the best fuzz pedal I've ever owned or played? The behringer one for £20. Which is just funny to me. I should have bought that one first. Could have saved me a lot of money that way.
I've had a few behringer pedals for over a decade now, and they are still basically in brand new condition. People worry about the case being plastic instead of metal. But they actually look to be in brand new condition still, while all my boss pedals of the same age are falling to bits, all the paint is chipping off. Those boss pedals still work perfectly of course, but they definitely look beaten up. But yeah the behringer pedals apart from being a bit dusty, have stood up to over a decade of constant use for gigs and home recording. So don't worry about the plastic shell of them.
Or if you really want a metal case, buy the TC Electronics version. TC now own Behringer. And so they have a range of very cheap TC pedals that are quite literally just the behringer pedals put into a metal shell instead of plastic. And they cost £30 instead of the £20 behringer versions. Again I don't think you'll ever need a metal shell for the pedal. But if it's really such a big deal to you, then just buy the TC electronics versions.
I wanna try this new reissue of the boss fuzz. Cos of how much Iove the behringer clone of it. But I doubt I'll ever buy one. Seems a bit pointless, to me, when I already essentially own it.
I don't even use half of it. People love this boss fuzz and the behringer clone of it for the very 90s grunge fuzz setting. But I absolutely hate that sound. I was never a smashing pumpkins fan. No I use the other mode, that sounds like absolute pure 60s ripped speaker style fuzz. It's pure 60s in a pedal. I absolutely love it. It also has a booster mode which I rarely use because I only have solid state amps at the moment. When I finally buy a new tube amp that works (my old one broke and I'm afraid of fixing it because trying to fix tube amps is incredibly dangerous if you don't know what you're doing, you can be killed by electrocution) I'll try the boost pedal mode. Although I mean, you can get a boost pedal mode out of practically any pedal. Get a standard overdrive and just turn the gain down to zero and the volume to the max. That's a booster right there. Or when my old tube amp worked I always used an EQ pedal as a booster. My EQ pedal is a behringer one too. I would use it as an attenuator. I've never heard of anyone else doing this except for me. I'd put the EQ pedal in the FX loop with every dial (including volume) set to the max setting. So that because it was in the FX loop, it'd be boosting the power amp tubes. Because power amp overdrive is the absolute best sound. Most amps these days have a drive mode and a clean mode, and the drive mode is simply pre-amp overdrive. What you really want is power amp overdrive. For that you need to crank your amp to max volume which is annoying. Or use an attenuator. When I used my EQ pedal like this in the FX loop, I could keep the master volume down, but the power amp would be completely cranked, and it sounded beautiful. Although maybe that's why my old tube amp broke in the first place, I dunno
But yeah just saying, it's very useful, the behringer super fuzz. It's got 2 fuzz settings and a booster mode. And most people seem to love the 90s grunge fuzz setting on it, and is apparently why this boss fuzz is so coveted too. But I much prefer the type of fuzz it has that sounds straight out of the 60s
Behringer pedals are so ludicrously cheap that why not just buy one? Worst case scenario, you don't like it, and then you're only out the price of dinner at a restaurant. It's worth the risk. If you end up loving it, then maybe you can buy this boss original version of it. But I don't think you'll need to. They stand up so well to abuse, the behringer plastic pedals.

Spoken like someone that doesn't have one. Who's to say a Waza version would be any better than an original FZ-2? There are plenty of superfuzz clones that have that sound by the way. It's not that original or unique. You can rehouse a $35 Behnringer knockoff for less than than the cost of an FZ-2. There's also the JHS Supreme and Fuzzlord FU-2 which are both under $200 and true bypass.
