  • In this video I am doing a reaction to the INSANE drumming ability of Anonymous II of Sleep Token, as he plays, Hypnosis. The drumming showcased here is absolutely astounding, mesmerizing, and well... HYPNOTIC! I give my insights into his playing, musicality, as well as my overall impressions of the song. I am going to do a drum cover to a Sleep Token song in the future so this video provided me with a good point of reference for my case study of this remarkable band! If you enjoyed the video please, like, comment subscribe, and share! I look forward to chatting with you all!

I expected the copyright claim, but my video is also partially blocked. Hopefully the majority of you can at least see the video. Also, another fun fact. If you are super early to the video right after I post it, then you are watching the SD version, because the high definition processing takes awhile on UA-cam's end to finish. On a happier note, this was some of the best drumming I have ever seen!

My drum teacher taught me very early on that it’s what you don’t hear that creates the beauty in drumming. He illustrated this quite simply by showing me a blast beat and then essentially the same thing but syncopated, with ghost beats and so on.

what's even crazier is this drummer was a session drummer before sleep token, they've only done a single interview WAY back in the day but it's never been revealed how all these musicians came together because the guitarist and bassist aren't exactly big names in the scene, same with vessel, he had one band that I could find before this and it didn't make any real waves like ST has. The fact these little known musicians came together and became one of the most talked about artists in the scene the past few years is insane and I love it. I hope they don't get tired of making sleep token tracks because I want to hear anything and everything they put out for years to come.

Well, most of the greats started as complete nobodies...
As for how they're so good, i think they decided to truly master their craft before releasing music seriously...
And by they, i mean Vessel and (II) since they're the ones who write everything (mostly Vessel since he can play everything apart from the drums)...
They're also the only two official band members, while the rest are touring members.
But yeah, ST is fucking amazing and they're only getting started.

Hypnosis is such a unique song in that the name aptly captures the entire feel of the song. The vocals are low, drawn out and carried almost like a hummed lullaby followed up with a captivating musical section.
When I listen to this song I often just close my eyes and let my body go in the vibe and atmosphere. It's captivating and hypnotic like a dream sequence. These guys are amazingly talented musicians and I am saddened to have discovered them so late.

Dude, so psyched you got to this! I always learn something new or pick up on something I never noticed before because of your perspective and experience, so thank you for sharing that so often with us. As a sucker for tasty hi hat work, ghost notes, and groove, ST ticks all the boxes for me and II is just something special that doesn’t come around often in my book. It’s that feel you pointed out that elevates him. There’s a distinct difference between playing a song and feeling a song, and those differences have a major impact on the end result for the listener. You can’t fake feel. It’s an intangible that is often conflated with something innate or given, when the reality is that feel can only come as a result of putting in hours upon hours on the kit. Period. To me, feel is earned and developed, and it’s easy to spot the ones who attained it because, well, they play like this. It’s a subject I could go on forever about, but I’ll spare you the full proverbial sermon to the choir, haha. Thanks again for the amazing insight! Can’t wait to see your cover when it’s done!

1st time watcher. my thoughts, excellent work overall. i know why you're a drummer, you can tell when you hum back the notes, you're tone def. lol. no biggie for a drummer and shows that you dont have to hear a tone to appreciate music. i LOVE that you listened to the WHOLE song. fade outs are key to finishing the feel of a song. great job. sub'd. 🤘😎

can totally see this video. I'm so glad you got around to reviewing II from Sleep Token...I just got turned onto them about a year ago, and it's a fantastic journey. Then, after appreciating it, I learned about just how unreal II is on the drums, and that kicked it up to 12 (from 11) to me. I love the way he plays his rides, and his tuning all around is *chef's kiss* - definitely recommend you check out more sleep token in your own time, even with such a busy schedule. I only really know of them because of the Will Ramos cover, and that is a thing of beauty. The music and the vocals interweave perfectly in exactly the way you describe, those nifty fills are accents on some of the vocals, and the guitars poke out space for some drum groove while the vocals have a second, before it all slots together beautifully. They are absolutely mesmerising, since Will's cover I've listened to a bunch of their stuff and they are definitely unique. I didn't know they were UK based, which means I could probably get to see them at some pointr, lol. Great reaction as ever, I look forward to seeing how you tackle one of their tracks.

The craziest thing is despite how incredible the drums are in this, it never overshadows Vessels vocals. Vessel is such a talented songwriter and vocalist that even with the vocals mixed in more to the track, there is never a point you hear his voice and aren't immediately pulled in. This song doesn't even have that many lyrics or a traditional chorus, mostly longer vocal runs by Vessel. And it's like that for most songs where ii is absolutely playing out of his mind, but you are never pulled away from Vessel and his vocals when he is present and it absolutely boggles my mind every time.

Adam is a master. You might want to add VLAD ULASEVICH from the band Jinjer to your list. Classical trained he basically took up drums for the band. Adds a ton of ghost notes usually and adds jazz flare to the music. Often a minimalist kit and open player. You really have great detail in your reactions.

Never heard of Sleep Token. Will definitely give them a go on Spotify tomorrow morning when I hop in the car. What a deliciously evil vibe to that song. Very dark closing. It’s the type of song that when it’s over, you kinda think to yourself, “Ok. I’m done for today.” And then you switch from music to sports for the rest of the evening. Lol It satiated the darker reaches of mind. That’s both satisfying AND slightly worrying. 😱
Edit: I’ll let you guys know if I develop any sudden urges to burn things or to sacrifice virgins to mysterious lords of the underworld.
