- Dragon Ball's promo art has always been a mix in terms of quality although this new release marks a new low for the Dragon Ball calendar fandom :(

I'll admit, those redraws of the promo art (I don't know if it's done Yamamuro, but by an unknown promo artist that mimics his work) look really good!

Itssa me - Mario
i think i know whats going on. it looks like the artist looked at dragon ball art and drew directly from scratch, without first drawing the anatomy and setting up guides for feature placement. as an artist, ive been there, and i remember the visual signs of it
Do a one piece vid the recent animation like is insane you could make so many videos on it

Yamamuro's influence on Modern Dragon Ball had a big negative effect on the series' visual look from the Anime to the Promo Art.
fah suree :(
Well of course, if he's the character designer, then other artists will mimic his work, because that's the look of the current show, just like in the Z era.
Just a heads up to avoid confusion, this is not Tadayoshi Yamamuro. This is done by a notorious promo artist that has been nicknamed online as "bad promo artist".
He's far from a newbie working with this franchise for close to two decades and his work extends far beyond calendar art, illustrating covers for official remasters and video games.
Eeh. Still think it would be interesting to see your drawings next too marks. And hey... it might be fun

Nice to see ya back. I'm curious if most of this modern DB promo art is drawn by the same guy. And its a shame cuz I see so many talented DB artists on social media
A decent chunk is
fenyo is goat
The best promo art is still from the 90s. I am in awe seeing them. It's crazy to me how much the art has regressed enough to where the artists are making anatomy mistakes.
I’m glad about my mention lol. But this video came out very well I was definitely confused when I saw this art on Twitter and it looked so off. But this video and those drawing’s definitely explained and fixed them in my opinion. Great job!
I love these casual vids,it seems at this point i will watch any of your content
yooo thanks for making this! i love seeing corrections of bad art cause it helps a lot with learning what mistakes to avoid
On the first one, the original’s expression seems more intense. You probably could have exaggerated it a bit more in your redraw, but overall yours is still way better.
your right and thank you
i think it looks more intense cause goku is looking down and the lighting darkens his forehead and his cheek bones which makes the lighting look like its coming from below (which always makes things look more intimidating imo)
but otherwise id say everything else in the redraw is perfect (especially the colours, those help so much)
@@Seedonator haha those were pretty much my thoughts, along with the sharper shape design to the cheek shading with gives some more intensity tbh
@@forgottenrelics1197 i made some edits to show what im talking about but idk if youtube will allow comments with links with all the bots flooding in these days
this is the imgur code if u wanna see: BzB5pCE
Oh.... my god lol. That looks like when fan comic artists trace existing photos of Goku instead of using reference and all they do is change the expression without any regards of the overall form.
great job on the redraw. a little of subject, im glad takahashi still stick with the dbz 90's design. i wish they all had that style, it was the best.
also any new updates on dbsuper?
With DBS they've been literally nothing this past month haha. Really unsure what's going on tbh.
What about Shintani and Chikashi Kubota?
Your Goku is spot on and definitely better than the official art in this case. For Vegeta, I can't say that I'm the biggest fan of either the official version or yours, but that's my opinion.
ye vegeta was the one i was least happy with, looking back the hair/hairline particularly needs to be really adjusted
@@forgottenrelics1197 Even so, I was comparing these to the ones from the professional artist and the official calendar. Any of these pictures (even the originals shown from the calendar) would be quite impressive for an amateur. And your Goku definitely beat the drawing from the guy who has been in the industry for decades. So don't sell yourself short, either! Keep up your artistic endeavors!
Other way around for me, I liked his Vegeta a lot more than his goku, but I think it's because of the original art, not a fan of how open the mouth is n stuff. Both are better than the promo artist though.
Relic three years ago: If Yamamuro improved on at least one of these three things, his art would look much better.
Yamamuro: *goes hard in the opposite direction*
This isn't actually Yamamuro.
Pls more art, i love seeing you draw with commentary.
Great video mate, Im praying DB official art gets better...
I really hope them still using yamamuros style doesnt mean super will return looking like this
Doubtful, if it isn't Shintani it would probs be Chikashi Kubota
@@forgottenrelics1197 i hope so
Promo art doesn't have anything to do with the anime lol
@@jasonone8726 it promotes the franchise and you'd want the artstyle to reflect how the show looks
@@liquid_red8966 You have to remember though, Yamamuro may not be the character designer of Super when it comes back, or the last 2 movies. But he is still the face of how modern DB looks, sense he's done 2 movies, the first run of Super and Heroes, plus he's been on the franchise for years. So until Super returns with a new style, they'll still use Yamamuro's art style. It doesn't mean that the show will still look like this. In fact, we had news a few months ago, that the next DB anime, whether it's the web anime or the main series, Shintani and Chikashi Kubota will be the main guys.
I'd love for you to do a promo art review video!
any thoughts on breaking down dragon ball deliverance goten/trunk final fight scene in episode 4? i imagine you don’t bother with fan animation but figured i’d ask. would love to hear your opinion on it. i don’t usually entertain fan animation stuff myself but that final fight had some really good looking moments. anyway you’re the man. nice redraws. i’m not really the biggest fan of yamamuro’s character design. shintani 🤩
Nice to have you back ❤ + the dragon ball franchise deserves better, bad promo art , no true HD release for the classics ( rescan the film masters ) , Bad promotion ( the new DBS movie ) a billion dollar franchise yet they don’t respect the fans
Oh dude please, bad artists doesn't mean they don't respect fans, that's a pretty ignorant entitled thing to say.
@@jasonone8726 I was talking in general my dude , I listed my reasons
@Hello Digital word The new movie being bad is your opinion, not a fact, don't use that to say that they don't care about fans. As I said, that's a stupid thing to say. Every creator, whether their material sucks or not, wants their work to be good.
@@jasonone8726 Are you dumb my man ? I didn’t say I hate DBSSH I said the promotion was bad! Reread my comment
Hey
Oh my god I’m rolling 🤣 I’m so glad I watched this and that you mentioned brick mouth a second time
your redraws are very good and on model compared to "bad promo artist"
but i think theyd be alot better if you had the same pro level compositing as his pieces
yeah, was thinking about the compositing aspect but time was limited and i kinda just wanted to focus on making a good drawing
and i'm pre average when it comes to the latter :(
I did a redraw of this on my channel if you're interested. I didn't draw it in the yamamuro style, just my own.
I have a question. Why does he draw so many straights now? Also is he aware how his art is recently?
Sad to see how deep Yamamuro has fallen
This isn't Yamamuro, this is someone from Bandai.
@@jasonone8726 those are based on his character designs for dbs and db heroes though
@@Zoro-go1mc ok Yamamuro still didn’t draw it go look at his original and you will see it looks nothing like Yamamoto’s💀
@@HiddenmistSwag Yamamuro still fell off terribly, his work is just not good anymore g
@@Zoro-go1mc Your work is still good
Im the guy who thinks the original was better haha. I know the brick mouth might not be proportionally right but it conveyed struggle a little better. Maybe if you made the mouth a little bit more dynamic but kept that "imma firing my lazor look" I would like it better.
I get where you're coming from, I think the longer mouth does help, although the extra level of intensity in his for me comes from the shading around the brow and the direction of the eyes. The sharp shape design of the shading also helps. But yeah I was definitely playing it safe and going for something that looked on model lol.
It's one of those artworks where at a quick glance it looks fine, but when you stare at it for too long you start to see the cracks
The stiffness in Goku’s face looks so unnatural and makes me feel uneasy for some reason lol
I feel like this video is just you flexing your art abilities.
And honestly, i have zero problems with it!
in my old videos i thought that way but i quickly became humbled haha
@@forgottenrelics1197 character development!
Your corrections are much better but the eyes are messed up on both. Goku should be looking down and Vegetas eye shape is wrong. Why don't they replace this guy?
its amazing how your redraws blow yam's art out the freaking ocean man.
Whoever drew these said "Alright I'm gonna be Yamamuro but straighter!" These look bad mostly the vegeta and gotenks art. The Goku one was decent enough but too many straights.
You draw pretty good, the Vegeta one does look a bit strange but still better in comparison to the other.
looks like someone is holding a leafblower against Goku's face on the original, lol
You have improved quite a bit. Nice redraw
0:03 the reply translates to "Yamamuro is coming pendejos"
Hey this actually a really good redraw. I do vids like this and might have a go at drawing this as well.
Totally not mark collab when?
The art screams, I don’t want to draw this but I need to pay rent. So I’m gonna just rush it.
Honestly....yha you drew it better, BUT I will say I kinda perfer hair of the original singe it had more detail in it, BUT if you shaded it similarly, yours would probably be better
Can you explain to me that why even after going back to the old art models in dragon ball heroes it still feels stiff and uninteresting a lot of the time compared to Z? Don't get me wrong they do some crazy animation too, and I get some of it is due to it being a promo for a game, but things just feel off still. Sound effects also seem to have gotten worse.. One of my most hated sound effects is that weird skin stretching effect when a character grabs onto another person.. same sound as in asuras wrath.. adds to the plastic feeling imo.
Shintanai should be the main artist at this point
Yamamuro peaked at Yo Son Goku everything after was not good
Yamamuro's peak was the Buu Saga era, he already started to decline after that, during the early 2000's. Yo Son Goku Returns was his redemption but he fell back into his old ways again in 2009, with DBZ Kai.
3:58 damn vegeta got a bad side profile
So is this guy like the new AnimeAjay?? Good - we need a reliable animation guy in the community
Look how they massacred my boy
I suppose my take away is.
Does it look like Goku? If yes = Promotion material.
The finer details do not matter to me as much as people who maybe have a very keen interest in these things. I've seen bad drawings of famous characters before. There's a really famously bad Captain America drawing which is just awful, but at the same time there is no definitive Captain America there is no definitive Goku. As long it looks the part it serves the function ya dig?
Rather want the promo art to be bad than the animation being bad tbh
LET'S GO!!!!
The art from the calendar looks like they used Bootleg toys as reference. But your art looked great 👍
I didn't know fenyo drew promo art.
Your drawings look amazing. Only thing I must criticize is the eyes of goku. Should have looked down or to the opponent 👍
WAIT, WHAT?
This is why I cannot stand anything involving Super. It's art direction is so terrible it bums me out. The thing that got me into drawing as a kid I can't even stand to look at now. I know this isn't directly from the show, but good lord
My favorite anime UA-camr is (presumably) a Soul Eater fan as well? Amazing
0:01 Lol, cameo epico de uno de los mejores canales en latino de DB.
Your redraws look great!
I really hate that thick highlight they add on the side of the face. It makes them look plastic.
Why are they sticking to Yamamuro? Why dont they go full Shintani? Incredible. Even I've seen his art, and although Fenyon is " better " his promotional art still reminds me of Yamamuro enough to still hate it.
Like I mentioned near the end, these posters (although they cover Z arcs as well) are sold as DBS posters and it does make sense from one perspective to use the designs from the Super TV series. For example in the past when there is promo art relating to DBS Broly the art often follows Shintani's sheets.
With Fenyo he is simply following the designs he's given so yes, some of his art will look Yamamuro-esque. His own personal work on insta tho is a great example of how versatile he is with different DB styles :)
Shintani was just for one movie, all of Super's run was Yamamuro, he's the face of how modern DB looks. Until Super returns with a new guy in charge, they'll stick to Yamamuro's work.
How did he fall off
Yooo!! Can you make a video on MHA.. About why the first three seasens looked awesome but recent ones don't look as good
Seasons 4-6 have plenty of great animation.
@@carloscauan7967 yeah.. But it kinda doesn't feel like first 3 seasons
I do prefer the Promo's version of gokus eyes looking downwards. And I actually liked the Promo of Vegeta's hair and eyes. Personally I think the nose, mouth and jawline are the big weird parts.
Thank you for doing this video!
The way you explain the anatomy was really impressive and detailed. I thought I was clicking on a funny, bad DBS promo art lol.
Why would it be dbs? Toei doesn't even care about dbs anymore.
I honestly preferred kubota’s designs to shintani’s. You can tell he has fully studied Toriyama’s and his predecessor animators art to create his own style.
Although I love how free shintani’s style gives to animators, I found myself enjoy Takahashi’s work more in the Broly movie, which didn’t stick to the characters models.
Please let me know your thoughts
fuck yeah, soul eater !!! ☠
Goku looks like he’s about to eat something lmao
There's a Dragon Ball calendar fandom? Huh, you learn something ew every day.
The only redeeming quality this artist has is that the characters are more expressive than most of modern Yamamuro arts and the style is more consistent throughout the sagas. Other than that, the drawing is complete trash, especially when he draws character face that zoom out in full body, they just look rough.
I think when redrawing their arts, try to draw it more like how Fenyo draws modern-era DB characters since that he has equal power to them when it comes to promo and cover arts.
It never come across to me that Shintani's artstyle would the major change to the DB aesthetic since he's only did the movie and hardly draw much promo arts unlike Yamamuro. Back then and even now, I still find Yamamuro as the lead artist when it comes to definitive DB artist and every promo artist will be based from his style.
loved the video

YOU should be the Dragon Ball promo artist I don't even think this artIst was going off reference on what a Dragon Ball character even looks like! they look like crash test dummies with Goku and Vegeta's faces painted on

Very successful on Goku but Vegeta looks way off model in yours even though you fixed some anatomy issues
yeah i wasn't happy with the Vegeta one
Really good redraws

Im starting to think the animators or artist at toei animations just straight up don't care anymore about making Dragon ball's art or animations look actually good
This isn't a Toei guy, he's a freelancer hired by Bandai. And Toei has plenty of staff passionate about DB. It's more so the decisions by the higher-ups in the company that have effected DB's visuals than anything.
@ForgottenRelics Exactly, this is the thing I can't stand about fandom, criticise the art and animation as much you want, but I can't stand when fans say the animators don't care.
I mean, yeah - you can draw. That is great. Even though your Vegeta face bothers me. But do not forget that these people have to draw for the entire day.
The goku redraw was good but the vegeta................atleast it's better than the original 😆
The first on is a good drawing it has its obvious flows but i cring when ppl compare anime to real life it anime not real life anime has there own character designs .
Just because it's not real life doesn't mean it has to look so hideously designed. They're modeled after real people for the most part. They're not Looney Tunes or Family Guy characters.

Thanks haha, I did pull up a ref up of Kanno's vegeta for the shading, but overall i mostly went off a Yamamuro one.
@@forgottenrelics1197 I struggled a lot with vegetas neck when doing a redraw of this Haha.
Yamamuro has fallen off so hard I wonder if he even cares anymore
I think the main issue is that all of these animators used to animate on Cel Animation, and are now relying too much on computer illustration. They're choosing the option to use the line or circle feature instead of drawing it themselves to save time, and it really drops the quality.
@@juub5171 Nah they still draw on paper, the only ones who painted on cels anyways were the finishing department. And they were traditional tools such as circle stencils and rulers which gave them that option back then. The fall of Yamamuro has little to do with medium considering you could see many of his modern quirks appearing back in GT.
@@forgottenrelics1197 oh, my bad then. I was basing my claim on pure assumption so like, lol. Anyways, if you're ever interested in reviewing non-anime related animation, I suggest reviewing and dissecting animation of the movie "Road to El Derado", it has great 2d animation.

Fenyo saved dragon ball promo art for me. there's probably others but he's the only one I can tell immediately
Considering how much the artist has drawn over the years... It makes me wonder if they even get enough time to actually take breaks. Sure, more often than not spending more time doing something should make you better at it, but if the pace is too much, I feel like this is the result. You have to start cutting corners in order to meet the deadlines.
I’m willing to bet this is probably the case
honestly when I saw the thumbnail I thought it was one of those AI drawings
it does have that vibe tbh
Yes, it's t true, it has been two decades, because this man as as a promotion artist has been creating art for Dragon Ball Z since the early to mid-2000's, and I know this because I still remember seeing his picture of in the Dragon Ball Z Level set in the K-Zone Magazine.
Bad promo artist moment
Love your Dokkan edits
Thank You, I feel like I've learned a lot from watching this video, and hope not make these artistic mistakes ever.
in the first image yamamuro was going for more of a front angle for the head, while the perspective in yours is facing the side more, so i dont think the nose in his drawing was done that badly, given how much it would foreshorten, but i can see where you are coming from. People who draw anime art, especially for very artistically exaggerated series like dragon ball can get used to making things look super over the top, but i agree with most of the points you made.
This wasn't Yamamuro, and although the angle is different the top line representing the bridge of the nose should line up with the right eyebrow :)
@@forgottenrelics1197 the nasal bone ends before it meets the eyebrows, but its connected to the eyebrows by the frontal bone/brow ridge, that depression just above the nose, but below the forehead, you can see it in side profiles , if you look at that angle in the mirror for reference, you will see that the top line/nose bridge goes past eyebrows.
@@4nnd711 It does, however, the line representing the top part of the nose (when drawing DB characters) shouldn't fold in under the left eyebrow. It's pretty clear he was trying to do a low-angle shot of the nose and messed up the perspective
