33 years old and I’m honestly still as obsessed and fond of Dragonball! Always appreciate these videos
same here but I'm in my mid-20s instead
Im 22, got the full manga set and honestly wouldnt mind having a DBZ themed birthday party
It's crazy how good Yamamuro was in this era.
He did a bad transition from traditional to digital animation, gave in to a lot of modern animation "problems" like the excessive use of "shiny bits" that makes everything looks kinda plastic. But even so, he remains a master of his art (in my opinion)
@@Fahel14 Yamamuro never switched to digital, he still draws on paper till this day. And you can find him adding highlights to characters back with GT. Even in Z you can spot them here and there

He's still amazing at what he does but his drawings are not as pleasing to the eye in modern day. His characters lack expressive features. You see a lot of very basic shapes, like with his eyes and noses and the way he draws muscle groupings makes characters bodies look segmented and rigid. From a casual viewers perspective these just seem like major nitpicks but when you've seen how good his drawings can be compared to what they are now it is a bit disappointing.
@forgottenrelics1197 I like the highlights, when they totally lack it their faces look flat to me (like in Broly movie) but it needs to be restrained. Like that legendary Hearts/Goku fight in Universe Mission which I think was Shida?
@@forgottenrelics1197 wow I can't believe he still draws on paper. really cool
Yamamuro in 90's was the GOAT. I miss that era so much...

He's doing a good job in Super Dragon Ball Heroes. then watch
Given the (I’m assuming) tight schedule of DBZ and anime in general, I’m amazed that Yamamuro was able to do so many detailed corrections in such a short amount of time
He's a very fast man and still is
the style evolution... still good at doin his correction job tho!@@forgottenrelics1197
He is the greatest dragon ball animator. He is the guy
Omg i love when people explain corrections and why it looks better
It's cool that Yamamuro completely redrawn Shida's cut. It's like you have the best of each one, Shida's smooth timing and Yamamuro's pleasant drawings.
As an American I’ve never heard anyone say knit cap in my life lmao, def a beanie here too
Mate, we Americans call it a beanie. I've heard it called a "skully" once or twice by some skaters, but we call them beanies like everyone else.
Thought so lol
@@forgottenrelics1197 yeah knitted cap is what they put on the signs at the store.
@@forgottenrelics1197 u must've been trollinig or didn't have enuogh caffeine in your "flat white" that day bc at 4:34 it literally says in in your wiki screencap "in American English, this type of hat is known as a beanie." 😂💀
I love the level of detail you put into these analyses. You have an amazing eye for these design and animation differences and must put a lot of effort to even look into the artists for each sequence.
I like Keisuke Masunaga and Yuya Takahashi’s style so it’s cool to see these!
Glad we got a little insight into production of "We Gotta Power." Its not as iconic as "Cha-La Head-Cha-La" but its still a pretty good OP in its own right.
Hopefully one day we'll get some more production material from that OP
@@forgottenrelics1197 Lets hope that'll happen.
We call it beanies too
7:14 Funny how both myself and Shida sketch characters like that layout he did for the We Gotta Power OP. For someone who's been recently into art and animation of Dragon Ball, I guess.
Speaking of Genga planning, after all that, Toei got ready to turn it into a colored 16mm reel made for TV and other dubs. You should look into the 16mm and 32mm reels in the DB series.
ngl the genga 18 looks better than the final result
We call them beanies here in the US too,. I've never heard them be called a nit cap before and I would've assumed it's a British name.
Also gotta say, THANK YOU FOR SAYING WHAT THESE DRAWINGS ARE CALLED! I'll now have an easier time looking these up for future reference!
Fantastic video yo :D
Yamamuro really went nuts on corrections for the love of the game. What a legend. All the corrections you displayed couldve been minor, but the impact was dumb major.
Inagami is VERY underrated!
His characters look so fierce!
Hope they hire him again!
He still works for Toei to this day.
@forgottenrelics1197 That's good to hear. Do they not give him the lead often in projects?
I've not seen that fierce artsyle in DBS 🤔
@@MrShahrozzznah he still works as an Animation Director and does key animation. Although he was already busy on the Precure series which is why he never came onto Super and still is heavily involved with that series to this day.
So I would be surprised to see him come back again. In regards to fierce art. There was already old school animators like Shida putting out very expressive work like at 0:23. And new guys like Takahashi 3:12.
@forgottenrelics1197 Ahh I see, thanks so much for the info man! 😁
It's something about those thick brows with the strong lines in muscles that makes them look legendary! I hope we get to see that type of art again
@@MrShahrozzzAll good man! And it would be interesting to see the thick eyebrows a bit pupils back.
A lot of it is dependant on who the character designer is. Even Inagami’s work in the buu arc looks a lil different as he leans more into Nakatsuru’s designs :)

LOVED this VIDEO! Please KEEP THESE UP my friend 😊
thank you!!
0:17 is that correction genuinely meant to be an improvement?
apparently to uchiyama it was haha
I love your channel man, this stuff is so inspiring for myself.
thanks dude! much appreciated :)
Prime yamamuro is a goat
we call it beanie's too in america, who says knit cap?? lmaooo
have to be honest, i always loved this opening more than the original z op, shame it doesnt get as much love
"angels" is also underrated. Hironobu Kageyama in general is underrated
I love videos like this, I would kill for you to post more often
Thank you for the lovely christmas gift!!
No problem Von!! Glad you enjoyed this one haha
LOL everyone in America calls it a beanie lol. I've never heard those other weird ones.
Great video! I own the three Piccolo pieces, from 2:59.
ayee thats so cool!! do you have a twitter/insta page were you post up your collection?
We call them beanies too. I think the Military refers to them as a Wool Knit Caps or a Watch Cap.
So awesome to see you do Dragon Ball videos! Here's hoping there will be more with the next Daima relevations.
For sure man!!
I just love seeing Shida gengas
How did the fall of Yamamuro even happen?
He's just getting older and changing his style. Akira Toriyama too changed your style, don't do it anymore arts like did in the 90s
Bro, I just got an ad for dragon ball z from Crunchyroll KEKW
Goddamn Yamamuro was a fucking beast dude. I'd argue some of the corrections he made for SHIDA of all people blow the original out of the water. How the mighty have fallen.
It's still a beast!! Are you working on Super Dragon Ball Heroes
love the detail in your content
thank ya!!
I, for one, wish we had gotten Takeo Ide's muscle mommy Android 18.
yeah, on second thought i was probs too harsh on ide
@@forgottenrelics1197 I mean, I understand the correction, to make her look more on model, but I just love muscle girls lmao.
4:34 As an American, I have never heard anyone call a beanie a “knit cap”
I like the uncorrected vegeta in the thumbnail maybe more that the changed version.
seeing these is just generally amazing... i like looking into the creation process of really anything art related and, while this lacks some of the insight on why the changes were made from the actual artists, does a good job at highlighting the process overall
also, we in america call those beanies too.... at least my part of america
Glad you enjoyed it! And yeah, I probably should’ve gone into what an Animation Director is and there job.
Essentially these corrections were made to bring the designs closer to the character sheets and create stylistic consistency as that can naturally vary when you have a bunch of different artists working on the one thing.
And also just to improve the general quality of the art. Proportions, Posing, Perspective etc.
Thank you!
Akita inagami is so sharp
Have you ever thought of breaking down Super OP2? That shit was really nice
Please can you make a video also talking about the artists who made the official Dragon Ball promotional art, such as posters, those Dragon Ball Cards, etc. I would love to know who were the artists who drew those promotional arts images
Tadayoshi Yamamuro, Minoru Maeda, nakatsuri and other artists that are unknown did the arts
I’m so curious where you get your animation knowledge from? Is it just from being involved in the medium for so long? It’s very impressive.
Was one of my subjects when I was at Uni which is where I got introduced to the fundamentals, but the majority came from studies after. Wether blogs or books by animators.
@@forgottenrelics1197 I see. That’s awesome. Your knowledge in your videos always impressed me, glad I found your channel. Any animator books you recommend?
0:38 that’s me guys I’m a Naoki Miyahara fan I’m one of the two people who wanted to know
Great video! But as someone from the USA, I have to say that me and almost everyone I know always called them "Beanies" and not "Knit Caps" lol
You should rename this video to *"Why 90s Yamamuro is the Goat"*
Great video
Please do,Why toshiyuki kan'no is a legend!
4:52 Didn't knew Naotoshi Shida worked for Digimon Universe lol
Yeah, he’s worked are fair bit on the Digimon franchise. He’s done a good amount of storyboarding on it as well 👍
the us calls it a beanie btw
Return of the G.O.A.T
imo the fat face vegeta for the intro is better than the sleek boi.
Videos like these make me really sad thinking that super had the potential to be an artistic masterpiece if the producers were to just simply fucking take their time. Budget is obviously not the issue consideration DB is one of the most profitable IP of all time overall
Yeah, usually the production of an anime starts years in advance, but some people say that Super's production started around six months before the anime first episode aired
Both looked good
I liked vegetas thicker face and bigger eyebrows and to me the best art style for dragonball
currently watching this video while taking a 💩
They're called beanies here. Though, they are are a type of knit cap.
Someone calculate the power level of that TV, please.
fah real, still waitin
I'm the one who asked for this video.
Beanies are called beanies in America; dunno what Google was cooking with that one.
I’ve heard “knit cap” maybe a handful of times, but 99% of people here are gonna call it a beanie.
"knit cap" my brother in sakuga google is LYING we do NOT call it that 😭
The rounder look its more common in movies
This video made me laugh i kept saying "ofc yamamuro did"
We call it beanie here in the US. I have never heard what you called it. 😭
I thought so. Google threw me off haha
We call it a beanie as well like a proper language.
Prime yamamoro
Android 18 was definitely a downgrade when it was edited, it would have aged a lot better if it remained like the original sketch\cel.
Woman with muscles doesn't it matches a lot. The fix got better. She looked really pretty in the z
@@desenhosparasempre_ Fighters are not meant to look skinny, plus male heroes get pumped full of muscles in places people are not even supposed to have muscles.
It makes more sense for an cyborg human to develop muscles than a saiyan who literally can't gain muscles due to physical labor not being able to cause any physical strain in their bodies.
Yet for some reason female characters in these shows must look like skinny girlfriend material.
@@MashupsByMandy I think you need to review Dragon Ball, the Saiyan saga where Goku trained in very high gravity and gave him his muscles. Vegeta also trained a lot. Remember if also that the number 18° is half organic. So it doesn't make much sense and she didn't need muscles to show that he was strong. Even number 17 had no muscles.
It would even be strange for the two of them together.
@@desenhosparasempre_ All of them already had muscles, it just increased how big they were. Android 18 isn't half organic, she is a human with cybernetic augmentation. In the outside only her eyes are synthetic.
@@MashupsByMandy It doesn't match!!! it would get weird. I thought the correction was cool, it matched n°17
It's incredible to know Yamamuro was once a marginally better artist than the powerhouse that is Shida.
Please do Yu-Gi-Oh dsod at some point
👏👏👏
He'd likely tank it, he did tank cells slap after all.
It's time to make video about current Toyotarou 🎉🎉
its been years since ive the read the manga haha
@@forgottenrelics1197 he he
ngl There's somethin bout genga that kinda jus looks cooler to me than the final product in most cases tho obv no offense or insult lol
For the record we call them beanies, not knit caps 😂
Edit: Skullies too
bro if would actually be sick if you were an animator.
What are these letters? B9, A2, B3 ???
I'm american and call it a beanie
What about the first Dragon Ball Z opening?
From what I’ve seen there’s a lot less production material for it available then the 2nd OP
Hopefully some more surfaces online one day
Nah bro thats a beanie
cheers
Can you make video of how to become an animator
Dude what happened to your "why was one punch man season 2 so mediocre" video I can't seem to find it 😅?
unlisted it
@@forgottenrelics1197 and now it's back again :D
original is original baby 😁
its obvious to draw own style but the question is who made it❤ i like both but old Vegeta is better because he is not look lil baldy type😂 yamamuro tried to make better but he did bitter 😅 only for Vegeta's forehead.... sorry but its true 😇
Uchiyama's correction over Shida's Super Saiyan Goku is a down grade.
a big one :(
americans call them beanies too
Yamamuro downgrading 18... I didn't need more reasons to dislike him
Idk, the eyes were a bit off, but even with the exception of that one, the rest of his corrections are great. He's an amazing artist.
@@forgottenrelics1197 Yeah but consider that he took away 18's muscles? What was lost can't be forgiven
