  • After a recent encounter of the medieval kind with the SCA I remembered that I haven't made any of these in a while. So I pulled out the pattern and put together a couple of Jack mugs. Mugs or tankards like these made from leather did exist historically. Because of their durability they were particularly used in English taverns and the American colonies.
    If you would like to buy a kit with the pattern and the form that I use to make these mugs, please see my Etsy store at bransonsgenera...
    If you would like to buy just the pattern, it is available at bransonsgenera.... The original form I use to shape the mug started out a a 3" PVC hub adapter that I used a rasp and sander to remove any protruding parts from. You can purchase one through amazon if you cannot find one at a local hardware store. amzn.to/3uITOEF (Amazon affiliate link)
    I am always working on building something and try to average a UA-cam video once a week. Most often leather work, but I have also posted videos on black smithing, knife making, casting, and even how I make soap. Be sure to Subscribe if you are interested in any of these topics, or just making things in general.

    This is probably one the the most skilled leather workers on UA-cam but sadly people care more about the sound it makes when it hits the table

    to clarify you can Either use the pine rosin and bees wax mixture as the final stuff you put inside the mug to keep it watertight OR you can use the epoxy SO it is an either or and both work the same??

    • @bransonsgeneralstore
      @bransonsgeneralstore  8 місяців тому

      Yes, you can use either of them to line the mug. The epoxy will be more resistant to heat so it is possible to use the mug for hot drinks like coffee. I still don't suggest hot drinks because the hotter the liquid the more it will soften the waxed leather.

    Those red plastic party cups are everywhere. What about molding the cup around one of those and just replacing the interior cup?

    • @bransonsgeneralstore
      @bransonsgeneralstore  8 місяців тому

      It is definitely possible to make a tumbler or cup that way. Probably need to fill one with plaster or something to make a solid form to shape the leather. Cut another one apart and press it flat to get the curves right for the truncated cone shape of the pattern. Maybe not even mess with the bottom since it is just a cover for a plastic cup. Trickiest part would be getting it just the right size.

    Is it possible to just use beeswax to seal it, or are the brewers pitch/epoxy necessary? I don't expect to be using it extensively

    • @bransonsgeneralstore
      @bransonsgeneralstore  16 днів тому

      Beeswax alone tends to crack. The pitch makes it more flexible. It would probably work but may be a little more frustrating. Beeswax shrinks when it cools and that causes it to break away from a surface or crack if it is adhered to the surface well.

    Can you use pine tar to seal the leather it’s black shiny black ,just wondering

    • @bransonsgeneralstore
      @bransonsgeneralstore  8 місяців тому

      Not sure. I have not worked with it. I would first check to see if it is safe. I don't know what solvents are in it. It was used to seal boats and canoes, so it would be watertight, I am just not sure if it would be good to have in contact with something you are drinking.

    I’ve been watching your braiding videos and had some questions regarding leather sourcing. I’ve been tinkering with Turks heads using paracord and hard laid cord and would like to venture into leather. I know where to purchase leather lace but not tanned hides such as you use in your videos. Donald

      I purchased some leather from Tandy leather because they have a store close to me. Most of the leather I cut into lace I have been ordering from Waterhouse leather. Another vendor I order from regularly is Springfield Leather company in Springfield Missouri. @springfieldleather here on UA-cam. I have used calf and kip hides from them and they even carry kangaroo which is the super premium leather for cutting lace.

    What machine and setup did you use to sew the bottom? I'd be curious as to how you got into that edge. Pattern?

    • @bransonsgeneralstore
      @bransonsgeneralstore  8 місяців тому +2

      I have a Cobra class 4. The bottom of the mug is big enough that the end of the sewing arm fits inside. The bottom is shaped deep enough to allow for the stitches to be where they need to be. When I originally designed this pattern I had a Tippmann Boss and it fit the same way.

    What is that tool called that you marked the stitch line with?

    • @bransonsgeneralstore
      @bransonsgeneralstore  4 місяці тому +1

      It's called a stitching groover. It cuts a shallow channel in the leather so the stitches are set down into the surface. That helps the stitches last longer because the thread is not as exposed to wear.

    Do you sell patterns for making the Jack mug? I'm interested.Also is there a reason that I can't hand tool the exterior of mug? Thank you very much for video.I will be watching for more leather videos should you put them out.

    • @bransonsgeneralstore

      You can tool the leather. In the past I have carved several of them. You may lose some of the sharpness of the impressions when you shape the mug and when you stuff it with the wax. To prevent some of that you can carve "in the round" which is after shaping with the leather still on the form, but that is difficult to do.

    Is the epoxy food grade?

    • @bransonsgeneralstore
      @bransonsgeneralstore  8 місяців тому +2

      It is according to the label. As long as you follow the instructions and mix it right so it cures properly. The Envirotex epoxy I used in the past worked better for me and is hailed as FDA compliant on their website. I can also buy it at a local hardware store.
