  • Here is an old Paul deLay performance that was only released on a private CD engineered by Stu Kinzel for Paul's dear friend Arthur Moore. This is CHOICE Blues Harmonica and singing straight from Paul's huge heart and deep soul. R.I.P. Paul deLay...
Note from Arthur Moore: "This fantastic Paul deLay song was recorded on video by Carlos Colina December 1995 at my "Harmonica Party" at Parchman Farm. Scott Clancy on guitar and Bernie Keough on bass. A Johnny Young tune. This song has made me weep every time I've listened to it for the last 16 years."
Comment from Carlos Colina about this rare trecording: "Dec. 3rd to be exact...was having dinner w/the deLay Family and Paul says "Let's Go Barnstorming"..."Thank You" Maestro! (and Artie Mo too)"

Paul was such a nice guy! I met him several times and he always wanted to engage in conversation and always had a huge smile. He was loved very much. RIP Paul.

Paul deLay's the best musical treasure that the Portland area has ever had. Beautiful stuff here. He's so unique and different. A style all his own! Thanks for putting this out there Mark!

this may very well be the best blues harmonica recording by a person not named walter. so masterful and, my god, so emotive. required listening for any harp player. the vibrato @2:17 is fucking crazy and the second solo is... untouchable.

As harp players go, the guy was un-matched. He didn't just re-hash Little Walter and Sonny Boy licks like WAY too many harp players do. And the majority of his original music was just that - original. That's saying a lot for an industry where most artists only seem capable of writing new lyrics over top of classic arrangements. Sadly, they are usually the ones getting the Handy awards.

I likes Paul Delay’s stuff- Played it on my radio show at Cetera. That said his vocals were an acquired taste . And I have no problem with the little Walter and Sonny boy disciples which are key foundational influences of the blues. Of course those styles live on. The key is to put your own stamp on it . I don’t think we have way too many blues players influenced by LIttlle Walter or Sonny Boy.. I suppose it depends how much you’re into blues. If anything the biggest problem is the blues is over-playing, and the blues -rock influence Which can overwhelm the music. People love to find the derivations in blues (“oh this sounds like ____”) but if you get too far from the basics, you’re not really playing the blues. I hear plenty of James Cotton in his playing and that’s a good thing. A bit busy at times but very creative… May he Rest In Peace..

His tone is killer cool. He sounds like blues sounds when it is sound....Always sounds like he's sucked the inside of his harp out; as though it were some sort of acoustic jello. Beautiful...

Stephen Jackendoff It's on a list I have in a note I have on Facebook of a Legend of many of the songs recorded by Paul deLay and the harps and positions he played on various tunes. Find your way to Facebook and join "Paul deLay Remembered" discussion group to join and I believe you can find the note there or just request it and I will repost it. We also have pretty fair relative pitch trained ear going on with a number of Paul's old harp playing friends that ought to be able to help you much faster than asking questions on my UA-cam videos.
