I saw Paul at the Blues Bouquet in Boise in '97 and that show has always stuck with me. I got an old harmonica out tonight that my grandfather gave me. I was playing some guitar and thought I should get that old harp out. First thing I did was look up Paul DeLay. Saddened to see he moved on. All these years, when I think harmonica, I think Paul DeLay. After the show, I approached him and asked about his case full of harps. My mind was blown..I had no idea there were all those different styles in different keys. He sat on his stool and showed them to me, and was really decent, especially to an idiot college kid. If I remember right, the rest of the band was ready to go and he was sitting there talking to me. I've met a ton of different musicians over the years, but having only met him that one time it speaks to what an incredible artist he was and the fact that he took the time to talk to me was pretty cool...coincidentally I did 48 months in federal prison down the road. Watching this takes me back to that night and puts a smile on my face. Thank you, Paul. Travel light.
You know it. He brought a new approach to harp in the blues. His work convinced me to find my own sound and style. ...and to bring some fun into my playing, as he did.
I've never heard another blues harp player rock the chromatic like Paul. It's kind of like a cross of classical and blues. Whatever it is, he makes you feel the song no matter the subject matter. Wish he was still around.... DeLay, Salgado and Musselwhite would be an amazing show.
Paul is the best. Musically,he colored outside the lines ,but always stays in the pocket.just a master!!mad respect.the biggest part of paul was his heart.sure miss him.Spike..Vancouver Wa.
Dynamic Blues Harmonica !!! No Need To Play a Hundred Notes In a Measure !!! Tone and Feeling Will Always Be Where It's Truly At and Paul deLay Delivers !!!
Arthur Moore was one of the nicest harmonica players you could ever meet. He gave back to the harp community. A legend with his tremello tongue technique. A cancer survivor. And a mentor. That's how life is done.
Having a genius mind is one thing, but applying that creativity in a physical sense is a whole nuther ballgame. And to do that kind of mind-boggling virtuosity on the hardest instrument to master is beyond comprehension. If you peeked inside his brain to see what was going on, I doubt Einstein would want any part of that. 👑👑
I miss Paul Having seen him in Portalnd, i home town, so many times, I am spoiled. There are many good harp players but Pauls gigs were a master class for us harp pllayers
Yep, he was my go-to entertainment in PDX back then. An unpublished recording was found in Europe of him on tour over there. His band mates on the tour got the rights and it was released I think last year Here is the link if you want to check it out. www.pauldelay.com/home.html
When I first heard DeLay, it was such a different, exciting style to me. He inspired me to start playing again. And such a loss. Thanks so much for this video. it's great to see what he does to get those extremes in his tones. He has such joy in playing.
Amazing video, i used to go watch Paul in smaller gigs around Portland, truly an amazing player. His tone was phenomenal. I was even lucky enough to go over to his place in ne Portland and get a lesson. Recorded it on a cassette tape, and to this day I'm kicking my ass because i lost the tape. He will always be missed as one of the best harp players around. Thanks for posting this great example of how good he was.
Just sounds so different to all the rest! For me he's probably the best! I notice in the video Paul appears to have a mic that he pulls something in and out of the back, I maybe mistaken but that's how it looks. Can anyone clarify?
He's pulling the mic away from the harp, even tilting it away it seems at times, to get that thinner, sharper tone that contrasts so beautifully with the fat tone created by cupping the harp and the mic together. It all hangs together so wonderfully.
Thank you so much @quinocat for posting this! I have a question for the experts here: on the second song is Paul playing an A chromatic in the key of B? As a beginner on the chromatic I am not yet familiar with the patterns of the different keys.
Marcel, as a chromatic player in response to your query, that is my pick. An A chromatic played in third position. Definitely not a C instrument (as most 64's are). He uses a C chromatic in the next tune, in the key of D.
An absolute master and it was all done well with heart, soul and passion. Miss you Paul Delay .
Totally unique microphone technique. Such amazing expression.

Paul was legit.
Paul deLay was the best! So creative, so varied, so different from most players.
You know it. He brought a new approach to harp in the blues. His work convinced me to find my own sound and style. ...and to bring some fun into my playing, as he did.
Paul Delay, what a monster on the harmonica! Luv that guys playing. One of the best to ever play a harp!
NICE PHRASES, MELODY AND TONE. R.I.P. PAUL DELAY

You can't have more than one harp player... like EVER.

And now DK is gone. Might have been murdered. The old Portland blues scene is tattered threads now. It's a real heartbreaker.

So splendide ! Another discovery for me . What a tone ! Merci !

I saw him many times while living in Pdx and to this day (2017), I miss him, but luckily we have a body of his work.

Just awesome. Hands down the greatest example of masterful and inventive blues harmonica playing on the internet. Thanks for posting.
