- Another of the service procedures on a 2014 Yamaha Viking Side by Side ATV. In this video I show you the correct procedure on setting the valve clearance for both inlet & exhaust.
In the video I cover what parts to remove to gain access to the engine's valve covers, all specifications & torque settings needed & also a couple of tips & tricks that make the job a little easier too...
I also explain why we have a valve clearance & what happens to it over time & why.
Any questions or comments just leave them below and I'll do my best to get back to you shortly...

Thank you! I've watched several adjustment videos but your video is the only one that I've found that shows very clearly where the feeler gauge goes. Others are at bad angles!
Andy Well done. Good camera work. I now have the confidence to DIY. Thanks
Thanks for the feedback Rick, please you liked the video, Cheers Andy
Well done Andy. Excellent camera work. Thanks 👍👍
Thanks Andy, a really well done video and extremely helpful! I will be adjusting the valve lash on a 2012 Rhino but the procedure and specs are identical I believe.
This video was a great help when adjusting the valves on my 17 Raptor 700r. Thanks, wish you the best.
+OCsixx Thanks OCsixx. Good to know you found it helpful
Cheers Andy
Nicely explained and the camera work was well done.
+wyattoneable Many thanks for the feedback....it was a long day yesterday with 7 videos in the can! Patience is not my strongest point! Cheers
What would happen if you did not turn the crank shaft to the right revolution? And do you have to take the spark plug out to do the valve adjustment? GREAT VIDEO!!!!!!!
+Mark Hi Mark, the position of the crank shaft is critical when adjusting valve clearance. In fact, it's actually the rotational position of the cam shaft (s) that is the most important.
On a 4 stroke engine the crank shaft turns twice for every revolution of the cam shaft so it's not just a case of aligning the TDC Mark on the crank shaft (flywheel) as you may be 360 degrees out.
You must check to ensure the lobes of the cam shafts are away from the heels of the rockers arms. An alternative way is to ensure the piston is at TDC at the top of the compression stroke and not the top of the exhaust stroke.
Hope all this makes sense. Pleased you found the video helpful.
Cheers Andy
why is my 2014 700 viking trys to blow muffler loose please help lol
Man, there's really not much room up in there, is there? It makes adjusting 4-cylinder Honda cars look easy!
Out of curiosity, what's the average life expectancy of these recreational equipment engines? I think I worked out once that the typical passenger car operating over 100,000 miles (160,000 km) equates to about 2500 hours, but please correct me if I'm wrong!
+rhkips It really depends how it's treated and service frequency too. I did a service on a 2 year old Viking Inc top end rebuild (first batch of Viking videos) and other than the engine issues it was still in good condition. Though I think anything more than 3000 hours would be pushing it for viability reasons for most 'normal' ATVs

Awesome, thank you! Sounds like they're quite a bit more durable than I would have expected! :)
Andy, has the wolverine R Spec landed yet in New Zealand? Is the Viking specs video the same on Valve Clearance as for the Wolverine?
+Sam Rimpel Hi Sam, we do have a Wolverine at work but not sure it's the R spec. I'll try find out the valve clearance specs for you early next week when we open again. Cheers Andy
Andy Mechanic The Wolverine r spec is the newest side by side from Yamaha. They call it a utility Sport.
+Sam Rimpel Yep.....we have one :-)
Andy Mechanic WOW. thanks for the fast response. I am looking forward to future maintenance and repair videos on the Wolverine

HAPPY NEW YEAR

Do you know what flywheel puller I can use on a 2015 Viking vi EPs. I turned my ride over put a need head and piston in it and went to set timing and the chain just jumps so I'm thinking I burnt the gear up on the crank side but can't see it unless I pull the flywheel
+Billy Taylor It'll be a special Tool. You may be able to find one with the aftermarket guys - check out the various Web sites. If you struggle I can look up the genuine part number on Monday for you.
Cheers Andy
I couldn't find an aftermarket that showed it fit a 2015 Viking.
Any luck
