I came back to America from Asia, in late 2012 (after about 3 years away)...I saw the SLS-AMG in person for the first time at a gas station... It looked amazing! The affect it had on me, still has me putting Borla Exhaust on EVERYTHING I own...in search of "that sound" since I can't afford "that car". A GREAT way to spend the day guys. Well done!
I am fortunate enough to have a father who has been passionately collecting cars for a long time. The stall consists of cars like the Porsche 356 Speedster, 991 GT3 RS, 911 4S, Ferrari F12 TDF, Ferrari 812, Bentley GTC, 280SL Pagoda, the SLS and the SLS Roadster, among others. And I've got to say, the SLS is my favorite. It is something about the way it drives and feels on normal roads. Of course, I lap the local track quicker in the RS, but on the regular roads, where you cant push your car anywhere near the limit, the SLS has a flow and vibe to it that is just great. You dont have to be pushing it at 7k+ RPM to have fun. You get no sense of urgency, as the powerband is jsut so excellent and the car delivers power everywhere you want it to. And on the plus side, at least for my family and me, it is nowhere near flashy. It is not a headturner like any of the other cars. You can take it on a roadtrip to a friends vacation home with other friends, without feeling you are showing off or trying to one-up anyone. It is a car you can take for a long detour to the grocery store, without feeling like a nouveau riche douche.
I have a story about this car (sorry, it's a bit long). Way back in 2008, I was on a tour of a country and one of the other people on the tour were from Canada. Anyway, I was somewhere between 10 and 13 and had already begun my massive foray into petrolheadonism and had annoyed many people about my constant talking about cars. The people from Canada had bought a magazine on the airport on their way to the tour and showed me said magazine. In it, I saw the American versions of cars for the first time - Acuras, Infinitis, Tahoes, Yukons, F-150s, etc. All the new models for the 2009 model year (for the life of me, I cannot remember the name of the magazine, and I cannot find it in my collection - even though I know I still have it). Anyway, I flicked through the pages and read all of the descriptions and what was new for the model year ON EVERY SINGLE CAR. Then I got to Mercedes-Benz. I turned the page and there it was, a silver SLS AMG with the Gullwing doors open. My mouth actually dropped. I read and re-read the few paragraphs over and over and over and fell in love with the car. I finished the magazine and gave it back to the Canadian - after which he told me to keep it. I thanked him and re-read the SLS entry again to celebrate. Fast-forward to 2010 and the first deliveries arrived in my country. I had to do an art class for school and every week I would drive past a Mercedes-Benz dealership. It had the normal Mercs on one side and the AMGs on the other. Low and behold, there sat a silver SLS SMG. I freaked out in the car - so much so that I startled my mother and she created a rule that stated I was not allowed to freak out about a cool car while she was driving ever again - a rule that still stands even though I am in my late 20s now. I pestered my dad to take me to go see the SLS and after about two weeks, he agreed. I actually got to sit in the SLS and close the doors. It was a dream come true. A year later, we were on holiday about 1000 km from home and drove past a dealership which had a blue SLS. Again, I asked my dad if we could go check it out and we did! Still, it was gorgeous. In 2012, I was still doing the art classes and guess what was parked in the window of the Merc dealership? A yellow SLS Black. AN SLS BLACK! I immediately asked my mom to stop and we went to check out the car. It was cordoned off behind red rope - the kind a you'd find separating the VIP section of a restaurant. So we just stood there, looking at it. My mom was off looking at an ML63 and an SLK, but I stood there, frozen, staring at the brilliance that is this car. Since I first saw the SLS AMG in the magazine, I decided that the SLS is my favourite car. All the videos I've seen of it, people praise the car for it's sportiness and awesomeness and is not anything like the "you shouldn't meet your heroes" thing people experience with cars like the Lambo Countach and so forth - which I am glad about. So yeah, the SLS AMG has been my absolute favourite car since I first saw it in 2008 and it will likely remain so. I just hope that I will at least have the opportunity to drive it - at least once.
Get after it . Bump driving it .. save invest , go own it . U got this .. Maybe 5even 10yrs later but do it , and enjoy the cars along the way of the come up !
I also remember when this car came out. Even took one for a test drive and was instantly in love. Purchased my own 8 years later. Better late than never.
When you see the concurrent rises of Yuri and Jakob, mark and Jack, etc, I think there’s a clear trend that most other journalists/businesses don’t understand: two relatable presenters sharing a discussion about cars gives the viewer more warm, conversational feeling about the content. The single presenter videos, albeit high in production, lack the character, goofiness and chemistry that a dynamic duo much like Thomas and James have. Keep the duo together!
This was my dream car ever since I was a teenage boy. I've seen it a handful of times in person and it's still one of the most beautiful cars till this day.
A big part of what makes the sound of that engine so magical is that it’s not just a rowdy exhaust. You’re actually hearing the sound of the engine working and it’s glorious.
I always come to watch these videos and I look forward to reading the comments. The car was so UNDER appreciated when it came out and I am so glad I bought one back when no one wanted one and got it when it was almost half price. Now years later, I love that people now "get it"!
The rear end may not match the design of the front with the roundness and smoothness but it’s very reminiscent of the SLR from the shape of the bumper to even the taillights. So it’s a major win in my book.
I still remember seeing this car for the first time with my eyes when I was a teenager. The long hood and proportion was absolutely striking. I still think to this date, SLS is the best Mercedes ever made since SL300. Unfortunately, the AMG GT will never be as cool as this car is.
As a 911 owner this is one Mercedes I would put in my garage instantly without a second thought. Stunningly beautiful and a fantastic nod to the original gullwing.... one of the prettiest interiors ever, love that dashboard and gauge arrangement.
This video just proves my point - till 2013-14 the industry was making amazing cars and the race between manufacturers was full tilt! I miss those days….
Personally, I thought you guys were reviewing a new Mercedes. The analogue gauge cluster looked so classy. I remember seeing one of these Benz down in Miami back in the day. In silver/gunmetal . Truly stunning.
For me, Throttle House has become the go-to channel for car reviews. Their content is top-notch, featuring stunning visuals that truly captivate. What sets them apart, though, is the dynamic duo of James and Thomas, whose humor infuses every episode with a unique charm. The opening scenes alone are so engaging that they could easily be a show in themselves. But beyond the entertainment, their reviews are spot-on, meticulously uncovering the strengths and weaknesses of each vehicle. It's this blend of thorough testing, honest insights, and a dash of fun that makes Throttle House a standout in automotive journalism. As for the SLS - stunning car.
You must wonder what the “boys” at that other Canadian car review show (what are they called again) must think when they drool over the excellence of TH. To think I started watching them before finding TH and then unsubbing from their attempts (Yuri and Jakob, I think)
Friend bought a silver one the first year. We went on a week long trip and I drove the whole time because he had issues with his eyes at the time. By far the best long distance GT car I've driven and a capable corner machine. Modern classic for sure and worthy successor to the 300SL.
Yeah, just heard one going on the road ahead of me when I was parked at work years ago and knew it was an SLS, saw a bit of the back and confirmed it, they have a sound unlike any other engine and I knew the sound from watching videos.
SLS is an amazing vehicle. We've got a 2 mile flat valley run near us and I was admittedly doing something significantly over limit when I ran up next to a guy in a silver one of these. He had a full handle bar mustache, I kid you not. I was in my WRX at something slightly over the limit and I heard him kick down as I ran up on him. I got up along side of him for a second or two and he just took off. Cheers sir, amazing vehicle, amazing experience. .
Great review guys…super cool visuals!…bizarre how the same Getrag 7 speed DCT can be configured so differently when compared to the California, SLS and of course awesome 458!
My father has a white SLS AMG. It’s such a beautiful and powerful sounding car. I’ve been luck enough to drive it for the past 10 years. 🙏🏼 And we’re from Buffalo! That comment from Toronto to Buffalo made me lol.
I wouldn't consider them an investment anymore. Eventually the ecomentalists will ban the use of all ICE vehicles. So you then have a very expensive paperweight. This is cool but it's not a Ferrari GTO, Lamborghini Miura, 300SL, McLaren F1, etc which are works of art. This, like a lot of supercars, are just very rare used cars.
I love how you present cars, even though I think you feature some pretty boring ones that don't really interest anyone - but your sense of humor keeps drawing me back to your channel.
Doing a review on an older car it may be useful to check the date code on the tires to see if the lack of traction is because of old crusty tires such as in the GT40 video.
Nah nah nah, SLS has always been wayward. The stickiest of Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 can barely contain its fury. Which means the SLS Black was a freak of nature for being so composed and controlled.
I had the chance to get a ride in one of those in that silver color, with a red interior. Ultra low mileage collectors vehicle. Beautiful car. Laughed the whole way through the ride. So enjoyable.
I adore my 2013 C63. Automotive perfection! Folding rear seats, room for 4 and extremely comfortable. Not the fastest, but very adept in corners and plenty of N/A power
The reason this car is worth so much these days is so simple. It's because it's one of the most elegant, gorgeous, timeless, beautiful designs that ever graced the road. There are VERY few cars that can compete in terms of design.
To me this cements the 2000's and early 2010's as the greatest era for cars :') The 458, the R8, the SLS, Gallardo, Reventón, Aventador, 911s, etc. I don't know if it is because these were the cars that I grew up with or the cars really have gotten worse, but just resonates with me, it harmonizes with my soul in a way modern cars just can't. (And those that do are just heavy updates on that like the GR 86 the only exception to this rule is the MX-5 which launched in 2016 I think 🤔)
Had the pleasure to taken one of these across a town in England many many years ago! I drove it slowly as I knew that I might never get that chance again in my life. Boy was it special!
No silly screens, a major plus. Well, not a huge screen. What's with the tire pressure light? And... taking this beast out on salted and sanded roads?!
With an electric motor helping it get 671 hp and 752 ft lbs of torque for a 0-60 of 3.3. Might not sound as good but let’s not pretend that it’s an econobox Corolla.
The late 2000's were absolutely the golden era of sports cars/supercars. Just before the crossover from mostly analog to full digital. When naturally aspirated engines, manual transmissions, and hydraulic steering were still a thing. As rapid current cars are, they mostly drive you, not you drive it.
'97 - '99 Acura CL. That's what the back end of the SLS looks like!! The first time I saw the SLS at a car show, I instantly thought, Acura CL -- and I can't unsee it.
One of the GOAT's for sure and it will probably be remembered for being the last great AMG cause it's exactly what you'd expect an AMG to be. An uncontrollable monster 🔥
I had headphones on at 4:30 and that was BRILLIANT! Great sound! Thank you!!! 🙏 your sound engineer is a genius and deserves a raise! 🍻 Also, great review….
I remember I didn't like the styling but boi has it grown on me, now its one of my favorite cars, I have a lot of 'em but still, it has surprised me. Great Job as always Throttle House 💪
Reading through these comments, it's clear we all share a deep appreciation for the SLS and its era. It wasn't just a car; it was a statement, a piece of art on wheels. The gullwing doors weren't just a design choice; they were a nod to the classic 300SL and a symbol of Mercedes pushing boundaries. Every time I hear one roar past, it's like a time machine to an era where cars were more than specs and numbers. They had soul, character, and stories to tell. And that V8 rumble? Music to any gearhead's ears. It's a reminder of what we've lost in the pursuit of efficiency and technology. Does anyone else feel like cars today lack that visceral thrill, that connection between machine and driver? Or am I just being a nostalgic old-timer? 😅🚗 #SLSForever
I absolutely love the SLS, they're a handful when gettin' after it, it reminds you that you're driving an actual sports car. The sound is mesmerizing, only a handful of V8 engines can evoke the kind of response from me like the MB 6.2.
You drove it, you showed us, we got to hear how it sounds like too. Well done. Where you get my thumbs up is for the words you used to describe how driving it made you feel. That's likely never going to happen to me so that's what I want to know most about it since I love it already without ever even had sat in one. Thanks, loved learning about it. Not sure about ordering one in LeMans red ...until now! Unconventional? Sure. Still just gorgeous.
I actually saw a red 300 SL on the road last month, first time I’ve ever seen one in person. Cute little old lady driving it too haha. Had to pull up next to her to double check it was a gull wing… it was. I was in awe of it. My son saw the look on my face and asked what I was staring at. Told him we were driving next to a car that’s probably worth around 5 million dollars (Canadian). Then he had that same look on his face too 🤤

The affect it had on me, still has me putting Borla Exhaust on EVERYTHING I own...in search of "that sound" since I can't afford "that car". A GREAT way to spend the day guys. Well done!
And it still looks amazing after all these years. Timeless design.
I'm a big fun too, but i won't be mad if you bought it before me... Its never too late.
Too long...didnt read
@@fale892 That's fine. I did attempt to write a book in a UA-cam comment.
The second I heard that helmet being handled, I got such a good laugh- a callback to one of my favorite moments on this channel with the i8
The rear end is absolutely beautiful. So simple understated and elegant
Yeah..
The golden years of AMG!
This was my dream car ever since I was a teenage boy. I've seen it a handful of times in person and it's still one of the most beautiful cars till this day.
0:10 - "The Get-In Helmet" soars to the top of Christmas lists everywhere.
A big part of what makes the sound of that engine so magical is that it’s not just a rowdy exhaust. You’re actually hearing the sound of the engine working and it’s glorious.
saw one on the streets of Luxembourg just yesterday. my wife didn't understand my excitement for spotting such a rare and exciting car!!!
LUXEMBOURG? yeah that country is like Switzerland, all the money is there.
I always come to watch these videos and I look forward to reading the comments. The car was so UNDER appreciated when it came out and I am so glad I bought one back when no one wanted one and got it when it was almost half price. Now years later, I love that people now "get it"!
Lol that intro - honestly no words and James just standing their was enough to make me laugh 😂
A timeless masterpiece from AMG!
This Merc is absolutely stunning and timeless. It still looks amazing. That intro had me busting a gut and the “it’s tickling all my boxes” haha
You guys should do a whole series on late 2000s early 2010s super cars
2007-2013 is the modern equivalent of 1965-1971.
@@jacquesc3166 definitely. For almost every type of enthusiast car
As a 911 owner this is one Mercedes I would put in my garage instantly without a second thought. Stunningly beautiful and a fantastic nod to the original gullwing.... one of the prettiest interiors ever, love that dashboard and gauge arrangement.
SLS AMG was the first car that intrigued me.. Still just as beautiful and Amazing..
I valeted a convertible version one time. Nothing else like it; the long hood, the way the car shakes when you turn it on, it’s awesome
To be fair, those guys are playing to their audience of 12-16 yo
Friend bought a silver one the first year. We went on a week long trip and I drove the whole time because he had issues with his eyes at the time. By far the best long distance GT car I've driven and a capable corner machine. Modern classic for sure and worthy successor to the 300SL.
Hearing the exhaust on one of these is an experience in itself
I've driven this monstrous beauty.....in my NFS Most Wanted.
I won and finished the game with this car over and over and over.....and well.....over. 😅
I am honestly sad that cars like these are stored in some garages for investment and are not enjoyed on the open road.
@bmstylee there is no way they ban ICE while planes are still flying
SLS is such a timeless design. Always puts a smile on my face when I see one in person.
I love how you present cars, even though I think you feature some pretty boring ones that don't really interest anyone - but your sense of humor keeps drawing me back to your channel.
The boring ones are the cars nobody can afford or can't drive anywhere near their potential.
@@doug6191 Obviously, some people can afford any car. Otherwise, there wouldn't be a luxury car market.
Let’s not forget the ZR1 that came out around that time being able to hold its own in that group of legends.
No one cares for that anymore though.
Between 300 SL and SLS I think this is the most beautifully and perfectly done reinterpretation of a classic design in the history of the automobile
💯👌
Doing a review on an older car it may be useful to check the date code on the tires to see if the lack of traction is because of old crusty tires such as in the GT40 video.
Nah nah nah, SLS has always been wayward. The stickiest of Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 can barely contain its fury.
Which means the SLS Black was a freak of nature for being so composed and controlled.
I had the chance to get a ride in one of those in that silver color, with a red interior. Ultra low mileage collectors vehicle. Beautiful car. Laughed the whole way through the ride. So enjoyable.
dude i knew this channel bcs of those helmet
I adore my 2013 C63. Automotive perfection! Folding rear seats, room for 4 and extremely comfortable. Not the fastest, but very adept in corners and plenty of N/A power
This was my goal car when I started business back in 2019. You could still find decent examples for ~$150k ish now they’re like almost double 😢
Keep going! You can get there!
The reason this car is worth so much these days is so simple. It's because it's one of the most elegant, gorgeous, timeless, beautiful designs that ever graced the road. There are VERY few cars that can compete in terms of design.
I've always felt that this car was a German interpretation of an American muscle car. Just amazing, brutal and timeless.
It's quite literally Dodge Viper with Mercedes touch on it, not even interpretation. Read the story how this car came along
Can’t say. Maybe it’s our life, maybe it’s how cool these cars are.
That gauge cluster is gorgeous. Sad how far MB has strayed since.
this is one of the best reviews Ive watched from UK folk. you guys killed it!!!! LOVE FROM AMERICA!!!!!
You get one for 165k USD in New Zealand. 😝
Had the pleasure to taken one of these across a town in England many many years ago! I drove it slowly as I knew that I might never get that chance again in my life. Boy was it special!
No silly screens, a major plus. Well, not a huge screen. What's with the tire pressure light? And... taking this beast out on salted and sanded roads?!
wildly low tire pressure, was curious about this as well
SLS was epic, the SLR was too. Black Series was the CLK 63 and the SL 65. Gone the wild, goofy and "if you know you know" era of AMG
This car's insane, and it sucks that we'll never get cars like these again...
Edit: okay, maybe Lamborghini but that is it
The shifts themselves aren’t slow, it’s the paddle to transmission communication. I just leave it in auto and it’s seamless
Now they are making C63's with 4 cylinders
With an electric motor helping it get 671 hp and 752 ft lbs of torque for a 0-60 of 3.3. Might not sound as good but let’s not pretend that it’s an econobox Corolla.
@CIRCLEDARK Doesn't matter. SPEED is not everything, with all that weight it won't be the drivers car the older generations were.
I probably sound crazy but I firmly believe that's the most beautiful car Mercedes has ever made.
This car beats any Lamborghini, Ferrari, Porsche for me. It just has an aura. Whenever I see one, it just makes my day.
had the pleasure of driving the convertible SLS for the weekend. In the matte grey when i was 17.. such a special car i felt ontop of the world
I had headphones on at 4:30 and that was BRILLIANT! Great sound! Thank you!!! 🙏 your sound engineer is a genius and deserves a raise! 🍻
Also, great review….
Then he had that same look on his face too 🤤
The LFA, 458, 08 Gallardo, 12c, R8 V10 and this on the cover on a little game called Gran Turismo 5. Chefs kiss👌
I remembered a lot about this iconic SLS AMG, the cover star car from Gran Turismo 5, the legendary PS3 Racing game that turned 13 years old in 2023.
That car in the Black Series trim with a full RENNtech exhaust system is one of my dream cars. The Merc's 6.2 liter motor produces such a glorious exhaust note!
The.Black.series version of the sls is crazy!!! And this Engine will forever be the best Engine by Mercedes
Shout out to my Honda civic Si “shift” lights. 6 years after my teenage purchase and it’s still fun.
I’ve always wondered why you haven’t done reviews on the AMG GT, GTS, or GTR. But this review gets me stoked!!
The SLS is my all time dream car, I had the chance to drive (Move) a SLS black series with 600 km. It really made me sad how many of these get stored, and dont move! They are genuinly epic machines!!! And the enterior feels so damn special!
My neighbor had one in black. It was an amazing experience. definitely an eye catcher
the new intro always get me
Such a timeless design
One of the best looking cars merc has ever produced.
My highschool teacher had one of these in silver. The guy retired at 35 and then passed his wisdom onto the rest of us. RIP Mr. K
