After battling skin cancer, we recently received unexpected news-Eric has been diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). This has led us to Honolulu and The Queen’s Medical Center to meet with specialists and figure out the next steps.
We’re opening up about:

Hey good friends, I had a CLL diagnosis 10 years ago. Began treatment January 2024 Gazyva infusions and 1 year of Venclexta. Now enjoying complete clinical remission. Skippered by Mayo Clinic- Rochester. Never any discomfort except the first 10% infusion. Celebrating by going to Kona in 2 weeks! Best to you.

I went through cancer a few years ago. 25 radiation treatments and two operations. I was very calm through it all. Faith in Christ and knowing what happens at the end of this life can have a very calming effect.

Just a mention that my brother was donating blood and they said his white blood cell count was high, he had leukemia. That was 8 years ago. He still goes out and plays golf but has taken on a healthy life style too. Eat good. Also, I was tested for a bone marrow transplant and I am 100 percent a match. Today, they don't drill in your leg but remove the good parts of your blood to give. I just wanted to put a positive spin out there.

I'll pray for you. I was diagnosed at age 55 with CLL. I relate to your fatigue. Some days are better. I think what is most frustrating is my desire to be active but, my body is screaming otherwise. Also, I have no appetite which weakens me.

Last Feb. 22, my husband died while we were visiting in Kona and he had to be airlifted to Oahu and Queen's Hospital. We got to know that hospital and its staff very well. They were kind and caring giving us all the time we needed to mourn. My family are planning to return this August to spread some of his ashes on his favorite beach, Spencer. He loved Hawaii Island. Keep up your spirit and good Karma.

Aloha - I remember meeting you for lunch in 2022. The conversation revolved around our shared love of BI. I also shared how important that particular trip was to me, as I had brain surgery only 6 months prior, and couldn't walk for a few weeks post surgery. I was so happy to be alive and back on the island I love. Talking about the entire experience was integral to my healing. It still is. Thank you for being open as well. No matter what we're all facing - it helps to know we're not alone. Sending good thoughts and healing vibes.

Good luck to you both. Confronting our mortality is a very humbling experience - and it extends very much to our non-sick partner as well. I will fast and pray for your best outcome and look forward to meeting you both soon. Good luck with your fight, I went thru this 5 yes ago. A different type of cancer. After surgery and 30 rounds of radiation. I'm now cancer free. Staying positive is a big key, modern medicine is amazing. Hang in there, and best of luck
Thank you for sharing your journey. I am so sorry this is happening but love your positive attitudes which will take you far on your healing journey. I had MOHS surgery in November of 2020 on my nose and interestingly have two in my family in the same place, daughter and sister. I know of at least five people in the same place, and this is in Indiana! Will follow your journey with great interest. The leukemia is a whole different ballgame than we all fought. Best wishes.

Today at my pool class a friend shared that she had her 3rd bout of squamous cell skin cancer. I asked her where she grew up…….on the peninsula. Yikes, during the rest of the class I debated if I should share your story. Yes yes yes. She was grateful that I cared about her enough to share tho it was a tad scary. Thank you for your openness. Dude…. Same age, grew up in San Jose ( near IBM) I’ve had procedures to remove pre- cancer from my face but….. my parents were beach people who took us to Santa Cruz probably before Sun screen was really used much. We now spend multiple months on BI - I slather my face w/ sunscreen & per my derm doc take Heliocare, Thanks for sharing. Hope to run into one day.

Thank you for sharing your tender and brave story. I finished cancer treatment for a different type in the Fall and am in the surveillance phase. It brought me peace to hear your story and just to know how many others face similar things in their lives and overcome with hope for the future and joy in life no matter where the journey goes. You guys I’m so sorry you are dealing with this. I too was diagnosed with leukemia, I had AML, 1988, bone marrow transplant 1990. I was 27 at my diagnoses. We all care about you and don’t hesitate to ask for help.❤️❤️ Also, never hurts to get a second opinion back in SF. I am here today because of a second opinion after my second relapse, which the other doctor suggested a clinical trial for an autologous transplant. My hematology/ oncology Dr. gave me no options.
Aloha Sandy-Thanks for your note! The Dr said "watch and wait"...Eric is going in for additional blood testing tomorrow. Let's see..and thanks for the idea on the second opinion.

Oh man! ❤ I had to fly myself to Oahu for kidney stones a couple years ago when Kaiser refused to treat or fly me to where they could treat. The medical availability on the big island is really one of the toughest things.

I grew up in Buffalo. Your story about growing up in Silicon Valley reminds me of Love Canal disaster at Niagra Falls. I'm glad you're being seen at Queen's. The best hospital in Hawaii.

Great job sharing this and your faith: let me share this: I am a 74 year old male: CLL is in a lot of people’s system and never is known. Unless you have a blood test. Facts; I went ten years before it became active. My doctor used target therapy. No chemo. Doctor prescribed Brukinsa/ zanubrutinib. Doctor and I agreed on setting a white blood cell count goal. That is 15 and high range level is 11. I went from a high 48 to this for a year now. Checking this count every three months. All other blood levels are normal red etc. only side effect is sometimes sleepy but not groggy. I pray that you see each day the positives in this and can share with others ur faith❤🙏🗿
My first reaction was NOOOooooooooo! We (in California) were just saying how Eric looked healthier in the last video, while Julie looked kind of introspective. Maybe that is a factor of what is real. However Eric's comments on his journey of spirit show he is NOT done, and in fact, just beginning a new important phase. I had a NDE when I was 29 and the reason I was able to return was "I am not done learning or teaching..." That 'side' let me come back even though it was much more awesome on that side. But I wasn't done and I knew it-it wasn't emotional at all -it just WAS- pure and simple.
Also an actress friend of mine was diagnosed with CLL over 10 years ago. She then let go of all that didn't serve who she really was, some of that was difficult. But she is still here, even now and more at peace, healthy, and more authentic than she ever was. She is beautiful throughout now. You guys already have a leg up. Julie will keep feeding you the good stuff. We will send fierce prayers and our love. You got this. We still need you.

That really sucks living in Hawaii and being extra sun sensitive.
I will look for good sales on keffiyeh and thobes. That way, you can still stay cool and also covered. Who knows maybe you can Start a new fashion trend in Kailua-Kona. While you recover? Best wishes on a speedy remission.

Having been through cancer scares (3 times with only 1 being real) i can tell you that you need a good wife (✔) and good insurance. My chemo (6 sessions) cost just over $871,000. Sorry as a Christian I'm a supporter of Jesus and his teaching. Not a fan of spiritual awareness that isn't based on faith. But I support peoples right to free thinking. Positive thoughts never hurt.
