I'd change the oil again rather quickly, it was clear when you first checked it because all the heavy particles had fallen to the bottom as it sat for a long time, when you started it it stirred up all the black sludge, therefore black oil but there will be a lot of sludge in the bottom of the sump. Don't forget it is a Ford so it will have a lot of wear evident - thus black sludge. This fresh oil will get dirty very quickly because it will be dissolving the crap at the bottom of the sump. If the sump is easily removed it may pay to take it off and wash it out with degreaser or kero.
Isnt that what engine flush is for ? Im no mechanic but ive done an oil change before and used engine flush i thought it was clean after that. . Cant reach the sump i spose.
Well, that took me back 40 years. Resting the plug on the engine block to check for a spark. 😀 That dreaded feeling as the battery started losing power and then taking all the plugs out to make life easier when turning the engine over. Then came the bump start with clutch and brake/accelerator all at the same time. Distributor caps, rotors, coils. I actually found an old set of feeler gauges in a box the other week (rusted solid). Maybe only me but I made a spanner box out of a large metal oil can and ...... I’d reminisce a bit more but the nurse is calling me back indoors for my medicine. 😂
@@bobtee6466 The Escort RS Turbo is a 1.6 CVH turbo version of the Mark 3 (Series 1) and Mark 4 (Series 2) Escorts that was made from 1984 to 1990. From 1986 to 1990, it was the "little brother" of the Sierra RS Cosworth in the RS range, and from 1990 to 1992, the _Fiesta_ RS Turbo (based on the Mark 3 Fiesta!) took on that role. The Euro 1 emissions standard of 1993 forced RS Turbo production to end in 1992. I think you're thinking of the Escort RS Cosworth, which is the successor to the Sierra RS Cosworth and uses the 2.0 turbo YB engine of this and is actually on the Sierra platform with an Escort-styled body.
What with all this home time Rob I’ve just got my 1978 GS750 running so watching you get the Cosworth running made me smile, well done both of you.....

I know the old cvhs of the same time needed the tappets to be re pressurised after being stood for a long time as all the oil runs out,are the cosworth engines the same?
That was my thoughts, if it runs hydraulic tappets then they can stick with lack of use/lax servicing. If they've not started to quieten down by themselves after a couple of heat cycles then an "italian tune up" would be my next step (make sure the car's running well, good oil pressure, not overheating or running lean etc, cambelt in good shape. Run it up to temperature & another 10mins of running just to be sure & then through first/second gear take the engine up close to redline a few times. Don't have to accelerate hard just let the revs come up higher. Time-served fix for sticky tappets & if that doesn't sort them then chances are they're scored & leaking pressure & need to be replaced.
@@danmackintosh6325 it does have hydraulic lifters, i have no idea for a car that has stood for 9 years but just letting mine run until the oil was thin enough to get in there good it stopped and that was after standing for 2-3 years
Very exiting! I'm not a ford guy, but I can enjoy this old classic. Fun story (I don't know if it's true, but that doesn't really matter) Here in Norway, this was a really expensive car. The exitement was huge when the first one came in to the country, as you can appreciate. The journalist who was going to drive it first, was at the dealer to pick it up right after it was shipped in. When he came out of the dealer to drive it away, it was gone! The first Sierra Cosworth spent about 20 min in the dealer before it was stolen the first time...
ahh yes, the old skool method of hiding a switch in the car :D I fitted one to my old Escort XR2i Cabriolet.... And it worked too.. Stopped someone nicking it one night.. I was watching them out window, Hearing the car just crank over and not start haha. They soon gave up
he wouldnt of driven far, his guide dogs system of one bark for left and two barks for right would never have worked lol, but seriously thats a rare rare car, crayford only did a handful unless you made a typo and meant 3i? ;)

Had a1990 Sierra GLSi. Loved it. Wish I still had it. It used to quit when I drove up a steep hill. What do you think was wrong? There's a kill switch in the spare wheel well that cuts the fuel pump if you're rear ended. The well was holding some water that sloshed back over the switch and shorted it 😂😂😂.
I had a GLSi and found out about that switch in the wheel well after giving my mate a tow. He let the tow rope go slack and the jerk it caused cut my car out. The RAC mechanic knew what the issue was straight away.
Kevin B Good story mate. I found out from a guy who worked on Cop cars. They bypassed them because crooks discovered how to immobilise them by rear ending the pursuit car😂😂
In 2006 when I was in school year 7 a family friend had one of these picked me up dropped me of a few times no other car had put a bigger smile on my face to this day
Made my day when the vid popped up. More so when it fired up, we’ll done lads. The tapping will be the hydraulic tappets once they fill with oil it will be fine. Sometimes takes ages.
Hydrolic tappets on these ? Easy replaced known for the tappet sticking when hasnt ran for years pop rocker.cover off and lifters and check tappets arent siezed just a thought
I have a very strong suspicion that this car came from a place called Berinsfield in Oxfordshire? If it did it belonged to a guy named Tony - sadly no longer with us hence the car got sold on..
Stumbled across this vid by chance, loved it, flashback city for me as I tussled with these more than once back in 1986/87 around the North circ, A4, and the best one was from Shepherds Bush roundabout through Acton high st all the way to Hanwell, I was on my old GPz 550 H2, great days 😀😀
I was surprised to see the British history of Ford as an American I had no idea how much brits helped create the best Ford's lol kinda embarssing actually
@@bruderschweigen6889 this car was built in Genk, Belgium just so we're clear 😝 (though the engine was of course developed by Cosworth in Northampton, East Midlands). Ford of Britain had become part of Ford Europe in 1967. The Dagenham, East London Fiesta factory and the Southampton, Hampshire Transit van factory both closed down in 2013, though the Diesel engine factories at Dagenham remain in operation, as does the Bridgend, South Wales petrol engine factory.
Sounds like a waste disposal unit eating cutlery to me, are they hydraulic lifters or solid on these? If they are hydraulic they are probably gummed up with sludge after being sat so long
Hydraulic lifters. The Cosworth engine is a very harsh engine. Its block originated from the Pinto block found in the 70's Cortina's and escorts. But even to this day people have squeezed over a 1000bhp from them. And in std form can do over 400bhp with just external bolt on mods and modern ecu's.
Retro 80's i thought the earlier Cosworth engines had solid lifters and a lot of people updated them? It could just as well be blocked or gummed up oil ways or a ropey oil pump I’d flush it and change the oil pump before i did anything else to the engine I think a 1000bhp is a bit optimistic, even the late 80’s BTCC RS500 cars were about 550-600bhp I think the days of heavily modded cars like this are long gone, a nice clean standard one is where the money is
Yeah, I bet all us old cossie owners were thinking it. I even had a 12g blank landmine on my garage door after being followed home and broken into that night.
Was going to say a coil switch lol my old man had me and my brothers in the 80s fitting a 2 quid switch to break the coil power proper working class solution and none of our cars ever got pinched although a few were tried great video great work love it

If the sump is easily removed it may pay to take it off and wash it out with degreaser or kero.
Probably worth letting the new oil do abit of a clean and change again after a short while..
Isnt that what engine flush is for ? Im no mechanic but ive done an oil change before and used engine flush i thought it was clean after that. . Cant reach the sump i spose.
Well, that took me back 40 years. Resting the plug on the engine block to check for a spark. 😀
That dreaded feeling as the battery started losing power and then taking all the plugs out to make life easier when turning the engine over.
Bloody love the old Cosworths gotta say though, Escort Rs Turbo’s tickle my heart. Crackin job fellas!
That was 92 93 era wasn't it?... Newer shape... Better dashes
Series 1 escort RS turbo 😍
Rob and Chris do make very sure that your cossie is extra well secured, there is a lot of greedy eyes out there, This has to be every Ford fans dream project, I for one watching with interest, stay safe and healthy.....
I’ve fitted kill switches in the “A” post. - you can’t see it when the doors shut !
Talk about nostalgia 🤣 I was completely absorbed watching that one 💪💪💪
WWG1WGA
COS its WORTH it
cam runner 🏃♂️ yeah
Looks fantastic in black, great work, loving this series about the Cossie in particular!
So nice to see a proper car back from the dead! Brilliant channel guys, stay safe 😊
My wife says that’s her tea towel at front ! Always using hers on my beloved Saab aero convertible ❤️😂😂
@@danmackintosh6325 it does have hydraulic lifters, i have no idea for a car that has stood for 9 years but just letting mine run until the oil was thin enough to get in there good it stopped and that was after standing for 2-3 years
Steady rev for 2 or 3 min at 2500 or 3k rpm
Haha every car I've had apart from the modern day daily has had a DIY hidden coil/coil pack kill switch even put one on my MK2 escort nice find
Excellent video mate and some cracking mechanics I’m always keen to learn from old school guys like you.👌
Very exiting! I'm not a ford guy, but I can enjoy this old classic.
Fun story (I don't know if it's true, but that doesn't really matter)
Here in Norway, this was a really expensive car. The exitement was huge when the first one came in to the country, as you can appreciate.
The journalist who was going to drive it first, was at the dealer to pick it up right after it was shipped in.
When he came out of the dealer to drive it away, it was gone!
The first Sierra Cosworth spent about 20 min in the dealer before it was stolen the first time...
ahh yes, the old skool method of hiding a switch in the car :D
I fitted one to my old Escort XR2i Cabriolet.... And it worked too.. Stopped someone nicking it one night..
I was watching them out window, Hearing the car just crank over and not start haha. They soon gave up
he wouldnt of driven far, his guide dogs system of one bark for left and two barks for right would never have worked lol, but seriously thats a rare rare car, crayford only did a handful unless you made a typo and meant 3i? ;)
ps soz i see you wrote escort now lol so yeah a 3i not a fiesta crayford xr2i, fiesta mk3 crayfords were really ugly lol
:)
XR2 was Fiesta, XR3 was the Escort
XR2i Cabriolet - Ford never did one.
@@ADY99ish crayford made 7 or 8 fiesta mk3s, much like you got mk1 and mk2 fly's by creyford (there were more of mk1 and mk2) and were all official ford licensed product
Defo sounds rough, good find on the kill switch, did want to ask why don’t we get to hear from Chris himself sometimes , is he camera shy ?
He's the UK version of Harpo without the horn .😊
Steve Budgen he’s too busy doing the work!
Probably can't get a word in edgeways when Rob is in full flow!! LOL
I like the fact Chris is anonymous. He’s kinda like The Stig
Hes probably not even called chris
Glad to see the classic beast rejuvenated..keep up the excellent work and no bs videos....proper job!👍👍
brilliant show guys, proper old school mechanical work just like when i was an apprentice
@mixio hili I really liked the cosworth engines always sounded crisp
Is there anything at all that Chris doesn't just happen to have lying around😂
Ady Wild to date no nothing lol 👍
Sounds like Chris is a good bloke to know
Had a1990 Sierra GLSi.
I'd be thinking about changing timing belt and tensioner b4 ripping this beast 👍
Dna Recovery420 we can’t get one at the moment 👍
In 2006 when I was in school year 7 a family friend had one of these picked me up dropped me of a few times no other car had put a bigger smile on my face to this day
We did see the compression measures, Rob. Thanks. A great job as usual. Makes these difficult days goes better, believe me.
Made my day when the vid popped up. More so when it fired up, we’ll done lads. The tapping will be the hydraulic tappets once they fill with oil it will be fine. Sometimes takes ages.
Did anyone else want Chris to spin it over whilst Rob was holding the plug 😂
I was shouting dont do it!
I've had it a few times
Early in the morning is the worst lol
Holding it with his tongue 🤣
Hydrolic tappets on these ?
Easy replaced known for the tappet sticking when hasnt ran for years pop rocker.cover off and lifters and check tappets arent siezed just a thought
💯 this ! Sounds the same as a bike I had that had the same issue.
matt knox all in the next video 👍
@@sruk awesome work guys ! This channel, bad obsession, MCM and retro rebuilds are the best automotive channels on UA-cam atm.
@@sruk How frequently are these made Matt?
Sweet. The ignition module tester was very cool.
Not that interested in cars but your videos and the knowledgeable explanation about what's going on are fantastic viewing - thank you.
Mike Ritchie 👌👍
The rush when she started, like having a big fat line...

@@dubayadot haha beakkkkk

Tapping could be dry Tapets. I recon if you kept it running for a while that would go away.
I agree. just let it tick over and the tapping will stop
Wish i had a mate like Chris. Actually i wish i had a mate come to that. Great to watch. Pleased for you both. Keep the content coming.
11:12 when things were made in UK, did not have to compete with the super-cheap Chinese labour.
Christian Peters Nah, plenty of cool old American Fords mate, don’t you worry 😎
Me when i heard it start up -->😃 loving these vids guys. Is there anything chris does not have and can not fix 🤔
Hayland Broadley to date no he has everything 👍
Never enjoyed watching anyone clean a car like I did in the last video. 😂😂 Sign of the Times. I don't know
Gonna have to get used to it, the Iraqi's shut down where I normally go
@@vinnyfarrell8391 😂😂
Well done Chris and Rob nice to hear the old girl running. Looking forward to the next video
Chris's garage is like Cosworth time machine he has everything you need to fix a Cosworth without going to the shops.
Sounds like a normal old car with hydraulic lifters to me.
Retro 80's i thought the earlier Cosworth engines had solid lifters and a lot of people updated them? It could just as well be blocked or gummed up oil ways or a ropey oil pump
I’d flush it and change the oil pump before i did anything else to the engine
I think a 1000bhp is a bit optimistic, even the late 80’s BTCC RS500 cars were about 550-600bhp
I think the days of heavily modded cars like this are long gone, a nice clean standard one is where the money is
I was watching and saying to myself that there would be a kill switch on it lol.
Yeah, I bet all us old cossie owners were thinking it. I even had a 12g blank landmine on my garage door after being followed home and broken into that night.
my rs turbo was tappety, i know its a different engine but fords of the time all seemed to be like that.
andre I've got a Fiesta ST180 and that's proper noisy. You're right, it seems that 4cyl Fords don't sound the best at idle/low revs.
Amennn : Because of the bad cam shafts or bad clackers.
Chris has just made every UA-cam Car Channel content seem useless , 'just hot wire it mate'. Legend!!
jamzergt lol he sure is 👍
Great series. Takes me back. My mate had two RS500 back in the day. Both black, Both stolen one after the other.
I called the immobilizer, only to have some idiots saying..."you don't know what your on about mate"
Fair play
Yes, it had to be; you couldn't get insurance on a Cossie when they were new without additional security.
@@saxon-mt5by Insurance companies back then only gave you a fair price if you promised to sleep in it with a Rottweiler and a taser
That’s some serious knocking :(
777Slots lol it’s tapping not knocking
Was going to say a coil switch lol my old man had me and my brothers in the 80s fitting a 2 quid switch to break the coil power proper working class solution and none of our cars ever got pinched although a few were tried great video great work love it
Great to hear the joy in your voice when she starts. Mechanics in years to come won’t have any of the knowledge Chris has because of technology. Keep it the good work lads, be safe 👍
I've got a MK6 Escort, learned to drive in it and 5 years later still have it. Working on older Ford's is an incredible amount of fun and this video is testament to that. Incredible looking car. Great video.
