The comments section is an absolute *goldmine* of information. You learn something new everyday. Well done to everyone that contributed with the solution. 👍
To be honest I haven't got as much experience as these guys but that sound didn't ever sound like a crankshaft noise to me, big end noise sounds deep and satisfying, the noise sounded like a much higher frequency however the sound recorded by a video camera and often the paint colour recorded by a video camera is often totally different to the actual perception of the individual viewing a live situation. There could be a lessen there. Record the sound of an engine aka the sound filtered out by an electronic device there might be clues there.
Wow , just goes to show , it's not what you think..... & that kinda " pisses me off " because alot of older people drive small cars & get charged a few grand for something that is not , thanks to the viewers people now could think differently as in more options I feel sorry for the victims out there. Guys bloody great video another Win for the people. 😂
I've been in the trade for 30 odd years and seen some crazy ideas but this ranks as one of the most over complicated solutions for a problem that doesnt exist I've ever come across. Nuts.
You're spot on when you said you can't know everything, the most worrying thing is that another garage said it needed a new engine. How can this happen so often? How many very good cars a scrapped through misdiagnosis? That Aldi TT, sorry I mean Peugeot is a good reason to find a good local automotive engineer, not a big garage with lots of fitters and give them all your business. Thanks as always, Jon.
How many people have been hit with massive engine replacement bills when they only needed £150 + labour. Crazy design. Great result for you guys and you took a risk. The new music is so much better, thanks. Love the channel lads 👍
The noise is caused by sections of the auxiliary belt missing causing the actuator wheel to jump about. If you had run it up with the wheel arch liner out the way you would of seen it. Do at least 1 of these a week at the moment it seems.
As someone else said and I agree, the enormous chunk missing from the former drive belt would've made a heck of a din as it passed the tensioner. A nice lucky break and the comments section is proven correct! Excellent video there Rob.
I have said it many times on here, I am 'old school' but I was in the 'big end' camp. I think you were right Rob, it was just a mistake. At least the little man can have a rest now! I bet he went home and watched the Jubilee! Thanks Rob and Chris for an interesting video once again. Thanks to all the subscribers who made the right call, well done all.
I think Chris deserved an easy-fix to get over Rob turning up with that Landrover! Well done guys. I was also chuffed to find out earlier that I was a winner in the last Comline competition, that I found out about from watching the channel. Thanks again!
Glad the commemts section were able to help you get it sorted. Another example of manufacturers over complecating things. There'll be someone out there with a kit to transform it to a more conventional set up. If not, Chris could design one. Top work. 👍
Nice win lads, had exactly same noise on a mini it was the belt itself had bits missing on the ribs causing the pump driver to clatter like big ends, new belt fitted job done 👌
What a result so much for the original diagnosis🤔🙄 and what makes this channel great 👍 is you take advice from viewers 😀 and check it out what is said 👍👍👍
You should pay attention when buying spare parts for this engine, especially the problem is the belt, which is much thinner on aftermket spare parts and can create a problem, there is not enough friction between the tensioner and the pulley on the water pump, so bether solution is to buy original belt it will last longer. Btw nice car😎 Greetings From Croatia!
Rcz-R owner here. 90k km's , car's still running like a beast. ECU remap on 100 octane fuel + panel filter , rock solid to 300 h. What a car man i LOVE it :)
Wow Chris finding out something new about auto’s, there’s hope for little old me yet, my sons 1.2 Clio was putting oil out as quickly as I was putting it in, cracked sump I thought took it to the mechanic who looks after me and it was the oil pump housing, so looks like I’ll stick to doing my crossword at least I can do that, super post guys and well done the guys who put you in the right direction
Yep! Very RC on that one guys. And Rob, no need for Chris to stand close to the mic. Even when he's the other side of the car his voice comes through loud and clear. Good job. 👍👍
Brilliant video Rob and Chris, what a result - wow!! And what I liked was that you did the repairs outside on the ground just like the majority us would. Superb content, total credit to you! ✊👍👏🚙
All that so the engine can warm up 2 minutes faster? The only thing that makes any sense to me is that Peugeot needed the engine up to operating temperature and on closed-loop control as fast as possible to comply with emissions regulations.
Me and my girlfriend have just aquired one of these from her Dad!!! He had not driven it for 3 1/2 years and he is moving to a warden controlled flat. I have been in the process of recommissioning it....new tires all round, getting rid of fault codes, broken Coil spring etc.... New MOT now and only 45k on the clock we aim to keep it as a second car. Its a boneshaker but does have personality that is so lacking in modern cars.
Great "Win" for you chaps & well done to those subscribers knowledgeable about these engines for spotting the issue. How many RCZ & Mini owners have been ripped off by garages into going down the "replacement engine" route when the true cost is £180!!!!
I have seen this issue 100s of times with bad belts. Basically that actuator comes in when the engine gets hot to then start circulating the coolant and as it’s squashing the belt on the pulleys that big gap in the belt is what’s making the noise as it’s thumping past the actuator is probably good just change the belt and the pump if it’s ok.
Well I done my apprenticeship in the 60s, I’m now in my 70s so I guess you can say I’m old school, but I’ve never heard a noise that accurately mimics a big end like that, it’s very true what they say, you never stop learning….well played again lads…😀
That belt had a chunk out of it. Every time it would go past the "Tension-er/Enabler Thing-a-ma-ginger" it would bounce the wheel against the waterpump wheel and make the noise! I would bet that all that car really needed was a new serpentine belt!
I wish I would still live in the UK, I always liked that car. Great job from the other subscribers!!! It is so great to see that there are still people who know what they are doing and care !!!
Sweet ... great flip, nice having others out in the cyber world that off there technical skill to the resolution to these kind of problem. NOW why would an engineer design something so flaky ... but it did run 70K until if failed (I wonder if the manual called out that drive belt to be replaced at 60K miles) LOL. Great job guys and great content too. I also liked the music.
Reminds me on when the alternator went on my 1.9cdti. Sounded like the engine was away to pack in lol because it uses a clutch assembly to engage. Nice win for you guys. It also shows how reading the comments on videos can give some gold, that many will overlook. So credit to those posting comments because it helps everyone.
I can't help but think of the previous owner. Big ends gone at 73K? Unlikely if it's been cared for. They've lost $Ks due to misdiagnosis. I feel for them.
Just had this, garage convinced it's knackered.... I tested it by pulling the manual release out on the friction wheel and silence! Even more shocking on more inspection there were 3 small "blisters/bumps" on outside the belt. Changed the belt, fixed - from scrap car to fixed in 15 quid!!! How many cars have gone to the grave, or had the expensive timing chain "death rattle" diagnosed for a stupid envirocrap over complicated setup, it's absolutely stupid.
You have both learnt something new, was worth watching just for the look on Chris's face. I don't believe it! your not turning into Victor Meldrew are you Rob? Chuffed for you both that it was such an easy fix, well done. 😁👍
Rob,so pleasing to see you and Chris so happy with this easy fix thanks to others suggestions,so pleased for you both,it makes up for the headaches you sometimes get ( ie rs 2000).
I have had this problem before and you would be very surprised to find that the chunks out the belt can cause bottom end type noises. Glad it's an easy fix guys
Yeah it's a clutch. The vag 2.0 engine has a similar electric clutch on its mechanical water pump to get it warm really quickly. . That fails just before the cam belt is due!
Had a similar issue with my 206 1.4 hdi. Same noise which a few garages could not diagnose. Sounded like engine was gonna drop out. Finally sorted it myself in the end. New pulley and perfect again.
Everyday is a school day, credit where its due rob and chris just shows that you read the comments, bestchannel on youtube with 2 down to earth fella's
What a result chaps. Love the power of the public to help out with answers 👍🏻 it's amazing how complicated manufacturers can make the simplest of processes but I suppose they have to try and make them as efficient as possible. Glad you got it done quickly for not much money and someone will get a stonking car for the money 😁
yes that is true ,i did the chain thinking it was that, but it was the rubber off a section off the water pump pully, and was hitting the metal tensioner , take note guys
A bucket of muck and roses come to mind. Nice one fellas I think we all in the comments had an idea that it wasn’t as bad as the original diagnosis lead you too believe.
How funny I did one today at work. The bath plug tensioner as I know it , no fecking room on the mini to get your hands in🤦♂️. I would avoid the garage that suggested a new engine. Disgraceful 😡
I used to have one of these - a 12 plate 2.0 HDI GT in black. I added the styling pack grilles and it looked amazing. I really, really wish I'd not sold it. If I ever see it up for sale, I'll have it back in a heartbeat. I did see it once on the road since and it's obvious someone is properly looking after it as the MOT history is clean through every year.
I suspect the noise was where the section with the missing ribs on that belt was getting pinched between the pulleys and tensioner wheel. It may have just needed a belt, but it was still worth putting the pump and tensioner on it anyway.
I have the same car, had a similar sound coming from the engine. Luckily the mechanic is a cousin of mine as it was indeed only a damaged belt the culprit. Could easily have been ripped off.
Rob, I bought one of these on the back of this video... 2014 MK2... Great little car and it still turns heads and looks to me like a little supercar. Had to have the pads and discs done, and it started leaking coolant from the thermostat housing which apparently was a nasty little job, so has cost me another £1k on top of the £8k I paid for it, but for the amount of fun driving it, and the looks and comments from people about how pretty it is I think it was worth it.
Rob, Chris, once I was sure you guys had it sorted quickly the first thought I had was how much more mowing Chris would get done in that nice weather. Everyone learning along the way.
That's what I really like about this channel, You get so many great surprises. As Chris said "Every day is a school day". Well done lads, cracking 2 episode series. 😀
Glad you guys figured it out - had this a few times in the past. You will probably have found, that the missing ribs on the aux belt are what cause the noise. That actuator pushing against the back of the belt is most likely what caused the noise when it hits the ‘step’ where the ribs are missing. The actuator is quite strong, and even though the ribs are on the other side of the belt, it creates a flat spot and makes a hurrendous noise. Well done - look forward to the next video! 👍🏼
My 208 gti made same noise was also the other pulley was out of balance it has a anti vibration thingy majig lol it turned out to be that so have that silly plastic tenstioner if anyone needs one
WOW, just shows you knowledge is power and it seems lots of the followers of this channel have that knowledge. What a bonus Rob and to see Chris's face, it was a picture
I hope that You and Chris replaced the water pump friction wheel and have not used the old tatty one as there is no rubber left on it,I'm saying this because I didn't see a brand new shiny one fitted.
Wow I’m amazed it was that easy thank god to the comment section. I would never have guessed it was that and what a complicated design. Brilliant work and thanks for sharing this with us take care
Before the French get all the blame it's possibly worth remembering that the Prince engine was a joint design of PSA and BMW. Still a naff design though! Not a great fan of Napa parts - US cheapo brand. The garage who suspected big end failure were fair enough (unless they were a Peugeot dealer who should have known better by now) but whoever didn't spot the state of that belt during its last service (or that it should have been replaced by now anyway due to age/impending failure) does deserve an earbending.
What I dont get is if is got a heap of paper work and service history how come that belt has never been replaced. Makes you wonder what we are paying for with servicing sometimes.
@@escort622 With a fail-able component you would think it would be replaced at a certain mileage interval though wouldn't you. Many motorists, me included, would not know that much about what belts there are on car. That is what interval servicing gives you, peace of mind.
I wish I’d got here sooner and commented on the last vid. I had the exact same problem on a Peugeot 207, I thought it was the chain rattling but turned out to be the aux belt. Looked exactly the same as yours and the noise was the belt slapping as it went round. New belt and it was cured
Your roll of the dice turned over a double six On this one. Thanks to some of your subscribers In the know saved you a whole lot of work and expense. We all deserve a bit of luck sometimes and this is yours. Keep it up, love your vids and on to next on.
top fix, makes me wonder how many engines have been changed because of the same problem for £150 in parts and 3 hours of labour , another one lives to drive another day , thanks guys hope you had a good weekend

I concur with you Mr Watson
What a cracking result lads. 10 out of 10 for the folk who knew what the fault was 👏👏👏👏
I've been in the trade for 30 odd years and seen some crazy ideas but this ranks as one of the most over complicated solutions for a problem that doesnt exist I've ever come across. Nuts.
The French are known for their over engineering ,especially when it comes to cars. They take pride in being "different "...
A solution looking for a problem
Great outcome lads! The shocking truth is though, that some poor trusting Peugeot customers are shelling out £4000 to have a new engine fitted!
You're spot on when you said you can't know everything, the most worrying thing is that another garage said it needed a new engine. How can this happen so often? Amazing diagnosis. Imagine being told you need a new engine and potentially scrapping the car for such a small fix! Power to all of the subscribers!
Agreed, I think it was making the tensioner jump each time it passed through it, hence the noise.
I have said it many times on here, I am 'old school' but I was in the 'big end' camp. I think you were right Rob, it was just a mistake. At least the little man can have a rest now! Fair play to those that put you onto the fix. And good on you both for listening 👍👊

And ahhhhhhhh relax !! Rebuilds time . Best bit of the start of the week. Who d have thought a wibbley wobbly would create that noise !!
Very nice, Rob and Chris. A nice way to start the day with you two guys. It's encouraged me to go out and fix my bonnet catch!

Just watching this has given me deep joy - well done!
What a result ! Brilliant diagnosis from those in the comments section and as usual well done Rob & Chris.
All that so the engine can warm up 2 minutes faster? The only thing that makes any sense to me is that Peugeot needed the engine up to operating temperature and on closed-loop control as fast as possible to comply with emissions regulations.
You did it again guys, fantastic result. Not sure now but there use to be quite a following for these Peugeot's
Me and my girlfriend have just aquired one of these from her Dad!!! He had not driven it for 3 1/2 years and he is moving to a warden controlled flat. I have been in the process of recommissioning it....new tires all round, getting rid of fault codes, broken Coil spring etc.... This is what makes your channel so good. I learned something, I chuckled at your humour, you got a result and someone will end up with a bargain.
When Chris pulled that cord I expected to hear "Action Man patrol forward!"
Great that your follows are helping you out. Excellent entertainment.
This car is a gem, feel bad for the old owner

old owner must be gutted watching this - well done chaps
Rob said, He’s ok he was offered the car before the video went out
Theres a plethora of knowledge in community guys. Absolutely brilliant 👏👏👏👏
It doesn't say much for the technicians that said the engines gone, does it?
They certainly didn't do any checks.
I wish I would still live in the UK, I always liked that car. Great job from the other subscribers!!! It is so great to see that there are still people who know what they are doing and care !!!

That’s a really lovely looking car Rob, I’m sure they’ll be a nice little que of hopeful customers wanting to buy that one! 😊
Absolutely extraordinary. What an amazing community and outcome. You guys must have smiles all round!
I can't help but think of the previous owner. Big ends gone at 73K? Unlikely if it's been cared for. They've lost $Ks due to misdiagnosis. I feel for them.
I agree, as in I feel sorry for the previous owner, but to be fair a lot of modern Peugeot engines crap themselves prematurely, so is not unheard of.
I’ll be jiggered! That’s a new one to me too. Well done to all the subscribers. Superb result 👍🏻
Totally over engineered set up that water pump talk about trying to reinvent the wheel... Well done fellas great result 👍👍
Hi rob and Chris, great job. Well done to the viewers for helping you. From marty in Belfast northern Ireland God bless

What a result:)
You never stop learning.
Interesting.
I like the fast turnarounds, almost as much as the long term projects 👍
Well done guys, can't help but feel sorry for the previous owner, probably cost him a lot of money after a misdiagnosis
We offered it to him he’s ok 👍
Just shows how genuine you pair are, proper Gents of the highest regard 👌
Rob,so pleasing to see you and Chris so happy with this easy fix thanks to others suggestions,so pleased for you both,it makes up for the headaches you sometimes get ( ie rs 2000).
Chaps you should pop the engine code name in the description probably help loads of people
I have had this problem before and you would be very surprised to find that the chunks out the belt can cause bottom end type noises. Glad it's an easy fix guys
Yeah it's a clutch. The vag 2.0 engine has a similar electric clutch on its mechanical water pump to get it warm really quickly. . That fails just before the cam belt is due!

No wonder there isn’t many about !!! I bet a few have gone over the bridge thinking the bottom end had gone 🤦♂️

Glad you got it done quickly for not much money and someone will get a stonking car for the money 😁
Hi. I work for mini. When the belts have chunks out of them it causes the water pump drive unit to knock against the pump pulley
yes that is true ,i did the chain thinking it was that, but it was the rubber off a section off the water pump pully, and was hitting the metal tensioner , take note guys
So your stalking your old car🤣🤣
I suspect the noise was where the section with the missing ribs on that belt was getting pinched between the pulleys and tensioner wheel. It may have just needed a belt, but it was still worth putting the pump and tensioner on it anyway.
This is what I came into say. It was absolutely this.
I have the same car, had a similar sound coming from the engine. Luckily the mechanic is a cousin of mine as it was indeed only a damaged belt the culprit.
Could easily have been ripped off.
Well done chaps, Power to the people, knowledge is king. Happy days....
Result guys. Everyone deserves a win occasionally.
You learn something new everyday 👍
Rob, Chris, once I was sure you guys had it sorted quickly the first thought I had was how much more mowing Chris would get done in that nice weather. Everyone learning along the way.
Can't help but wonder if that "garage" was looking at making a pretty penny on that "new engine".
That's what I really like about this channel, You get so many great surprises. As Chris said "Every day is a school day".
Well done lads, cracking 2 episode series. 😀
Could the knocking possibly have been the flat spot on the belt as it went between the pullys
Sounds quite likely!
Yeah that's what I thought too
Your grin at the end of the video says it all , a team effort
Within the first minute, I’d thought ‘uh-oh, Rob’s been on the sauce’.
Is that a private plate, guys? I reckon an accountant boss would pay good money for that!
Total Result! Well deserved! You guys make me smile...time and time again!
Begs the question, why was the belt in such a state if the car has so much paper work/service records with it? Even so, nice drink in it for you lads!
Well done to your subscribers, and what a belting little motor for no money at all, nice one have a good week 👍 and I'll see you in the next one☕☕
I think you will find the noise is where there is a chunk out of the belt because it drives off between that and the pulley
100%
One of the best you tube videos iv ever seen. Well done you chaps.
Interesting looking car, Peugeot aren't sold in the U.S. although I wish they were.
Im Australian and I'm about to buy one for my first car in a few weeks
Great news Boys and another one done with help from everyone involved and a good , cheap motor for someone well done
Great fix, well done team salvage. Lovely looking motor that Rob, it will fly out the door.
What I dont get is if is got a heap of paper work and service history how come that belt has never been replaced. Makes you wonder what we are paying for with servicing sometimes.
If there’s no invoice with a aux belt on it you won’t be paying for an aux belt. So you’re paying for what you get.

I wish I’d got here sooner and commented on the last vid. I had the exact same problem on a Peugeot 207, I thought it was the chain rattling but turned out to be the aux belt. Looked exactly the same as yours and the noise was the belt slapping as it went round. New belt and it was cured
