It's one of my favorite mario kart games ever since I replayed it a year ago. Great track selection (sky garden is favorite track of all time), simple yet really fun gameplay imo, plenty of variety, and really easy to pick up. I only prefer DD, 7 and 8 over this game. I'm so glad that it got on nintendo switch and with local play.
Another very underrated MK game is Mario Kart 7. The maps are typically quite good (especially that amazing Rainbow Road), and I think the roster is quite unique. Most people hate on the game and it’s new characters purely because there’s no Waluigi, which sucks.
The weirdest part is that people seem to like blaming the likes of Honey Queen and Wiggler for no Waluigi (even though Metal Mario literally exists) Honey Queen and Wiggler are honestly also way better than… most of Mario Kart 8’s newcomers I probably wouldn’t have minded the lack of Waluigi in 7, if it wasn’t for the fact that Waluigi Pinball came back in 7 anyway for… some reason?
Tbh GBA rainbow road has the best potential for a GBA remake EVER. Seeing remakes like cheese land and snow land, seeing what Nintendo could do with Rainbow Road is awesome. Really hope we see it at the end of the lightning cup in Mario Kart 9
INB4 they intentionally decide to remake every single other Rainbow Road before the GBA one in future games simply because most people vastly prefer those Rainbow Roads more But, ironically, the reason why I want GBA Rainbow Road the most out of any Rainbow Road is because of how forgotten it is, and a remake could really overhaul this track to give it the same beloved classic status as many of the Rainbow Roads from the 3D titles

Sunset Wilds, Rainbow Road, Cheese Land, Boo Lake, Ribbon Road, Sky Garden, BC3 and BC4 is only scrapping the surface of how good this game is. Even tho it has MK64 Roster and only half the items. While I wouldn't go as far as calling it one of my absolute favorites in the series, it's definitely the most overlooked and underrated one in my opinion. I like how this game uses its limitations to its advantage and gets creative! This especially shines in the new tracks like Cheese Land, Sunset Wilds, Sky Garden and Ribbon Road just to name a few since the game is forced to make flat tracks but actually gets creative and gives them really unique themes and track designs.
Super Circuit had some really great tracks! With only one track from this game left to come back in the MK8D BCP DLC, I can’t wait to see which one we get. Personally hoping for Sunset Wilds, as I love the sunsetting theme on each lap and I would love to see that in 3D
I also kind of love the music in this game, despite it’s compression, it breaks through that with the catchy melodies and at times beautiful instruments, Stuff like Ribbon Road’s music is phenomenal and I wish it kept that vibe for the MK8 Version instead of a surfy remix.
This is a very fun Mario Kart Game to me, There is a lot of creativity with it and a lot of stuff for a flat racing game, It has some really bad maps like Broken Pier, But Stuff like Ribbon Road, Bowser Castle 4 and Especially Sky Garden are amazing. The game also looks beautiful for a 2D Pixel Game and it controls surprisingly well too.
Mario Kart Super Circuit is my 3rd favourite game, behind 8dx and Wii. The game is just so fun to just go through all the cups in a single sitting. I've never unlocked the extra cups but I still have a great time going through the new courses. I love the designs of the tracks. Some of the layouts are kind of generic and samey... like Yoshi Desert and Sunset Wilds have the exact same layout, while Luigi Circuit is not only shaped like Luigi, but is also just mirrored Sunset Wilds (with more satisfying turns). But Tracks like Cheese Land and Ribbon Road have some of the best layouts in the series with some of the most satisfying shortcuts in the series... that are INTENTIONAL. Cheese Land literally has jump pads in a way you can use to create shortcuts with. And don't forget about Rainbow Road, which is literally shortcut the track. And there's also the tracks that are just satisfying to drive, like Sky Garden, Luigi Circuit, and even Peach Circuit, which has 2 opportunities for drift boosts. Mario Circuit kinda sucks in this game. Only 1 chance for a drift boost, and the rest of it is just some boring turns. They really ied up that track when they remade it for Mario Kart 8.
Ever since April (when I finally decided to play this game) I've been playing it off and on since I hadn't played it before. This is basically what Super Mario Kart wants to be. I don't think the controls are perfect but they work better in this game than Super Mario Kart or heck even Mario Kart 64. I still have a bit before I beat it but yeah, this is a pretty solid game. This was one of my first games when I got a GBA as a child, and the first Mario Kart game I played. I had tons of fun playing this with my friends, even though the multiplayer link cable was quite something... We spent hours doing experiments as well: Did you know you could push and stuck other players into the quicksand pools of Yoshi Desert if you stay behind and wait until they finish their 3laps?
15:29 Tracks I would have in this mode instead: -Peach Circuit (the player will be allowed to learn the controls of the game with this track) -Cheese Land (introduction to the more wacky themes of this game) -Sky Garden (introduction to all the shortcut potential) -Bowser Castle 2 (introduction to the gimmick of having a Bowser Castle at the end of most cups)
Tracks from Super Circuit that I want to see in a future Mario Kart game with a MK8-style overhaul: -Peach Circuit (could use more layout gimmicks) -Cheese Land (bring back the moon theme!) -Luigi Circuit (imagine if there was a cannon that could take us to the Luigi Blimp!) -Sky Garden (GIVE US OUR TRUE SG LAYOUT BACK!!!) -Cheep Cheep Island -Sunset Wilds (with true elevation changes and the return of the sunset, it could be a banger!) -Yoshi Desert (imagine a section in a city in the oasis!) -Lakeside Park (that could have varied and fun track design!) -Broken Pier -Bowser Castle 4 (THAT LAYOUT) -Rainbow Road (imagine this with a MK8-style glow-up with, say, a section in a giant asteroid!)
Would like to add that the controls for both MKSC and SMK are actually quite responsive, if you know how to use them. Heavyweights are optimal, drifting is necessary, and you want to counter-steer out of every drift (or counter-hop) to counteract the sideways momentum that can build up while drifting. Both games become exponentially easier with this knowledge. MKSC RR might be my favorite track of all time (played it a lot around a decade ago and eventually held WR for a while haha).

Super Circuit was one of my favorite Mario Kart games. It was also my very first Mario Kart games. And I love how Nintendo gives the GBA Tracks some love in 8 Deluxe with the BCP, and Mario Kart Tour, except the GBA Bowser Castle 1-3, I wish those tracks gets some better revamped, like with BC4
My guess as to why single pack mode only offers 4 basic snes tracks is that transferring every track in the game via the link cable would either take ages or would just be too large in file size to fit on whatever internal storage link cables take advantage of for this mode
Im not sure if the problem is in me but i personally had an easier time with super mario kart's controls than super circuit's, but tbh i really like the tracks and soundtracks from this game, especially the remakes/remixes in tour
For me personally, this is at least better than the first half of the Mario Kart series up to Double Dash, and I love that game. Quick run alone is huge for single player, and the way you unlock things and then try to get the best rank possible in each cup is pretty amazing even if I think future games do unlockable’s a bit better.
I didn't even know the background of the title screen could also turn to nighttime. I only got sunset. So I must have not completed the game just yet. But I once sold my GameBoy Advance and Mario Kart Super Circuit along with other video games and consoles, so now I can only play it again on my Nintendo Switch.
This video and Pikehunter reminded me that not only is Super Circuit imo Top 3 Mario Kart games but its Lightning Cup is one the best cups in the series
Idunno, unlike, say, 2D sprite-based platformers/adventure games/RPGs, 2D sprite-based racing games just kinda feel rendered obsolete as a whole by 3D racing games imo, and I’m not entirely sure why I guarantee that if Super Circuit was a 3D game on a 3D system, and the tracks actually had elevation, it would be much more beloved as a game (thankfully, I guess Mario Kart 8/Deluxe and Tour are somewhat filling in that void with the absolute cavalcade of GBA track remakes)
The reason single pack link is so limited is because of how single pack link works. The GBA has no internal storage so the host who has the game is basically projecting the game to other players in real time. Restricting it to one character and 4 small, simple courses is really the only way it was technically possible back then.
The single-pak multiplayer looks like a demo of mario kart: super circuit because the gba link cable is very limited if there is only one cartridge, a lot of game dosen't even have music and can only be played once while in mario kart:super circuit it have music and you can continue playing until you and you're friends do not want to continue anymore
Honestly, I kind of do like it more than I thought. I actually would like Nintendo to create an All-Stars collection of the first 4 games in the series, especially Super Circuit, that one doesn’t deserve to just be exclusive to Nintendo Switch Online! Good to have you back again!
As for you really liking some of the quirks of Super Circuit’s controls, maybe it’s because there’s no analog input involved? (But then again, DS also has that, and most people like that game’s control scheme way better)
Sad thing is that we’ll never get another 2d Mario Kart game. 3d is downright better but it’s very interesting to see how Mario Kart works around hardware limitations.

I will forever stand by my belief that Super Circuit and Tour are the most underrated and overhated Mario Karts ever. Yeah both games have flaws, but why do they get trashed for their flaws while something like MKWii gets to much love with its flaws?
Because Mario Kart Wii is not a free-to-play mobile game with microtransactions (before anyone comments this, yes, I know the gacha stuff is gone, and that’s great, but the game is still built around a mobile game-like model, and I personally can’t get past that after being scarred by those dang old Facebook games I used to play as a kid, and Idunno, I just prefer the overall structure of a traditional console/handheld Mario Kart game more) It’s also actually 3D, with tracks that are not flat, and have elevation (also possibly some of the best tracks in series history, no wonder why the Booster Course Pass seems to love bringing a Wii track every wave)

Interesting; I always felt that SMK and MKSC had nearly identical play controls. I used the drift hopping technique with SMK and never felt like my drifts went the wrong way. But I grew up playing SMK since original release in 92, so maybe crossing the curve was easier and more engrained. Side note: I love the creative course concepts, but Cheese Land is one step too far for me. Just feels totally out of place in the Mario universe.
The best part about this game is that red shells are not cheapskates that go around your protection. Every time I try to enjoy a Grand Prix in Mario Kart DS, it always ends up with me screaming profanity at the screen. I do like DS, but I will never understand why the Mario Kart game on the handheld that succeeded the GBA made red shells that way. 🤔
Right now, im trying to get 3 Stars on 150cc Star Cup and im pulling my fucking hair out. The A.I is relentless on Yoshi Desert and Peach constantly pulls a Star out of thin air. Bowser got me 3 stars on all SC tracks across all CC modes, except this one.

Hoo boy ranking Super Circuit above DS? Bold move, at least with preferring most other Mario Kart games over DS, they have the advantage of… being actually 3D, special items, two racers in one kart, tricks, retro track selection (because honestly, if you count the SMK courses in Super Circuit as retros, DS probably only has the second worst retro track selection in the series), the gliding/underwater/anti-gravity gimmicks, and say what you want about the way Tour is structured, but its mission mode is admittedly a huge improvement from DS I guess one thing Super Circuit does have that the other games can’t really replicate nearly as well is the off-the-wall bumper/ramp physics (especially in GBA Rainbow Road)

Hot take: this is the worst Mario Kart game. Yeah, Super Mario Kart is slippery as heck, but having 2 games in the same style?!? NO. Plus, this game did nothing new, look at all the other games, I can’t deny this point. If this game had any chance at impressing me, then it could’ve at LEAST had a good starting course and Rainbow Road… alas, it has NEITHER. The only good course that’s worth my time is Sky Garden. But it was brought back in MKDS, so I have NO REASON TO PLAY THIS GAME. BTW, the courses that I have missed, I ain’t missing much. IE: Boo NO Lake, Cheep Cheep Island, and the worst Rainbow Road. This video and Pikehunter reminded me that not only is Super Circuit imo Top 3 Mario Kart games but its Lightning Cup is one the best cups in the series
Idunno, unlike, say, 2D sprite-based platformers/adventure games/RPGs, 2D sprite-based racing games just kinda feel rendered obsolete as a whole by 3D racing games imo, and I’m not entirely sure why
I guarantee that if Super Circuit was a 3D game on a 3D system, and the tracks actually had elevation, it would be much more beloved as a game (thankfully, I guess Mario Kart 8/Deluxe and Tour are somewhat filling in that void with the absolute cavalcade of GBA track remakes)
The reason single pack link is so limited is because of how single pack link works. The GBA has no internal storage so the host who has the game is basically projecting the game to other players in real time. Restricting it to one character and 4 small, simple courses is really the only way it was technically possible back then.
The single-pak multiplayer looks like a demo of mario kart: super circuit because the gba link cable is very limited if there is only one cartridge, a lot of game dosen't even have music and can only be played once while in mario kart:super circuit it have music and you can continue playing until you and you're friends do not want to continue anymore

Honestly, I kind of do like it more than I thought.
I actually would like Nintendo to create an All-Stars collection of the first 4 games in the series, especially Super Circuit, that one doesn’t deserve to just be exclusive to Nintendo Switch Online!

Adding onto that, I actually would love to see a remaster of the game, make it feel different to 8, but still refined in a way.
As for you really liking some of the quirks of Super Circuit’s controls, maybe it’s because there’s no analog input involved? (But then again, DS also has that, and most people like that game’s control scheme way better)

I will forever stand by my belief that Super Circuit and Tour are the most underrated and overhated Mario Karts ever. Yeah both games have flaws, but why do they get trashed for their flaws while something like MKWii gets to much love with its flaws?
Because Mario Kart Wii is not a free-to-play mobile game with microtransactions (before anyone comments this, yes, I know the gacha stuff is gone, and that’s great, but the game is still built around a mobile game-like model, and I personally can’t get past that after being scarred by those dang old Facebook games I used to play as a kid, and Idunno, I just prefer the overall structure of a traditional console/handheld Mario Kart game more)
It’s also actually 3D, with tracks that are not flat, and have elevation (also possibly some of the best tracks in series history, no wonder why the Booster Course Pass seems to love bringing a Wii track every wave)

Interesting; I always felt that SMK and MKSC had nearly identical play controls. I used the drift hopping technique with SMK and never felt like my drifts went the wrong way. But I grew up playing SMK since original release in 92, so maybe crossing the curve was easier and more engrained.
Side note: I love the creative course concepts, but Cheese Land is one step too far for me. Just feels totally out of place in the Mario universe.
The best part about this game is that red shells are not cheapskates that go around your protection. Every time I try to enjoy a Grand Prix in Mario Kart DS, it always ends up with me screaming profanity at the screen. I do like DS, but I will never understand why the Mario Kart game on the handheld that succeeded the GBA made red shells that way. 🤔
The only games to have Circuit in the tittle are super circuit and home live circuit, and they are both mostly hated or overlooked.
The multiplayer is actually good for the time considering it was probably very popular with the whole first handheld Mario kart game shtick.

Right now, im trying to get 3 Stars on 150cc Star Cup and im pulling my fucking hair out. The A.I is relentless on Yoshi Desert and Peach constantly pulls a Star out of thin air. Bowser got me 3 stars on all SC tracks across all CC modes, except this one.

I feel like since Dropping doesn't give you any speed boosts, it feels less like an exploit and more like just a regular strategy!

Hoo boy ranking Super Circuit above DS? Bold move, at least with preferring most other Mario Kart games over DS, they have the advantage of… being actually 3D, special items, two racers in one kart, tricks, retro track selection (because honestly, if you count the SMK courses in Super Circuit as retros, DS probably only has the second worst retro track selection in the series), the gliding/underwater/anti-gravity gimmicks, and say what you want about the way Tour is structured, but its mission mode is admittedly a huge improvement from DS
I guess one thing Super Circuit does have that the other games can’t really replicate nearly as well is the off-the-wall bumper/ramp physics (especially in GBA Rainbow Road)

Hot take: this is the worst Mario Kart game. Yeah, Super Mario Kart is slippery as heck, but having 2 games in the same style?!? NO. Plus, this game did nothing new, look at all the other games, I can’t deny this point. If this game had any chance at impressing me, then it could’ve at LEAST had a good starting course and Rainbow Road… alas, it has NEITHER. The only good course that’s worth my time is Sky Garden. But it was brought back in MKDS, so I have NO REASON TO PLAY THIS GAME.
BTW, the courses that I have missed, I ain’t missing much. IE: Boo NO Lake, Cheep Cheep Island, and the worst Rainbow Road. You can’t change my mind on this.
