Former Shopify employee & current merchant here 👋 I was privileged to be encouraged to grow a side hustle while supporting our merchants grow their business. Now I’m a full time merchant who wouldn’t be where I am without the leadership and culture of Shopify. PS Harley, your energy is just as contagious and inspiring as it was when I first joined the company in 2014!

You guys closed our store without prior notice as we were growing, we had been with shopify for 6 months with no issues. Our shopify balance account is frozen as well with our funds locked in it, customer support won’t help at all and no one is replying to our emails! We can’t even disconnect our domain from shopify. Now we have inventory on hand that we can’t even sell, plus all of our profits are locked away.

32:20 Best one getting everyone to the dance floor hack I ever saw was the bride and groom did a speed photo with each table, then the DJ had everyone run to the dance floor for a big group photo. As soon as it was over he hit the most hype song and about 90% of people stayed on the floor and about 50% most of the night. Absolutely genius

Unfortunately due to previous horrible stupid life decisions, I'm forced to start with a zero balance in my savings account. On the bright side, the huge amount of debt - consequence of those bad decisions will be payed off next month,It's never too late to start saving like there's no tomorrow, and I'm really REALLY excited and motivated. Harley, your vulnerability about fatherhood is beautiful. Just like in business, the important thing is that you try and do your best, how you are empathetic to your shopify clients, show empathy towards your girls, and most importantly…teach your girls to love being WHO THEY ARE, quirks and all. No parent is perfect, but if you make one of your life’s missions to LOVE your daughters as best as you can, the way you can, when you can, in an imperfect way. Your mission is achieved. Don’t put key performance indicators on your relationship with your daughters. Just love them.

Love this. I built a 6 figure/yr dog grooming business from a $2500 start and didn't have employees til after I had brought in over $100k by myself. I'm consistently booked for the year with a wait list. I have the opportunity to move the business and increase my income. BUT I'm terrified to hire new employees because I've worked so hard to build my reputation and not everyone would put in the same amount of care I do. The new location where I can grow would add additional services and possible retail but would mean needing to hire the new people. Finding the right employees has always held me back. My previous job was in HR and I learned quickly that everyone wants to be paid but few people want to work. Your podcast and similar ones make me want to go ahead and make the big moves though.

Be careful though- I'm what you would probably consider 'old' and I've owned businesses. Some businesses are not able to grow and make more money. I've seen a cabinet maker and a catering company hit that plateau, they take on more work and hire more help and expand the premises, but the overall profit is still the same, but with more headaches, Often if a business can't scale without additional working employees then it's better to sell it as a thriving thing and put the money into something that is scale-able, like content (hate that word!) or something that can be manufactured. I met a man who made his money selling a small advertising business to NBC, then invested and lives very well off the proceeds :)

This CD is very calming ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxzpa8CIfZcihW4Z0F_ja0QF3W9KIatrsq the first meditation focuses on breathing, the second guides you through the Buddhist metta bhavana--loving kindness to all, and the third is a meditation to be used when walking. him is originally from Scotland, so there is a little accent to his voice, but it is very soothing and not at all distracting. If you are a beginner to meditation, this CD will walk you through all the steps of relaxing and breathing as well as sending out the positive thoughts of love and kindness that will be returned to you. We have several CD's, but this one is a favorite that we choose most often.

However for me, this was my favorite interview. As fellow entrepreneur, I totally resonated with the depth around resilience and fragility, as well as the importance of therapy.

Touching on the good father theme: I'm a (great?) mom of two and also struggling figuring out what makes a great parent. It feel sometimes like wanting to achieve that unachievable idea which is made to make me feel.like a constant failure. and it's just torture.
I think what makes a good parent is simply connection. it's being in a relationship with your kid. being authentic.
which leads me to a practical suggestion: just ask your kid if you are a good father to them, what a good father is to THEM to begin with. because their idea of it also doesn't always match with yours.

I get such GREAT service every time I go to the *VRI TOKEN* and the IRS is SO wonderful to work with. I DEFINITELY want the Government in charge of my Social Credit Score! This couldn't possibly be misused in ANY way! All the data breaches that the VA has had makes me confident that my data would be TOTALLY safe!

“I am fulfilled because I am doing the thing I should be doing” this is a fucking powerful statement. “Should and Like” two huge words that can move mountains in a social, professional and organisational domain. Unfortunately the “like”wins to negativity in a lot of contexts within those domains.
And Steve, your question to Harley about being a good dad…was timely with a lot of wisdom and with profound empathy to what is so important to just being a human being. It says a lot about what you think feel about the subject 😉
❤ this episode is perfect and I have listened to it 3 times now 👌🏽

I loved how you both talked about fitting roles within a company and self-awareness regarding this.
The Peter Principle is an ingenious little book that describes exactly the problem you were talking about.
I'm quoting from the English Wikipedia entry about the Peter Principle here:
"The Peter principle is a concept in management developed by Laurence J. Peter, which observes that people in a hierarchy tend to rise to "a level of respective incompetence": employees are promoted based on their success in previous jobs until they reach a level at which they are no longer competent, as skills in one job do not necessarily translate to another."

I'm no professional but I'm currently on the journey to answer this question. I've been speaking to people around me, including present and former CEO's, assessing what's most important to me, praying for divine guidance and listening to DOAC; a combination of these things should answer that in the right time.
