As a clinical psychologist, I am really impressed. She has an amazing self-care philosophy, and uses communication to keep her boundaries. This is extremely important not just in her career, but in life every day.

Honestly, after watching this video, i went to a job interview and when I was asked questions about resolving conflict this video popped into my head out of the blue and I used her idea of how to resolve conflict in the interview and the interviewee was really impressed and I got the job. Well, appearances in general don't have to do anything with personality...until it comes to plastic surgery. Since that's a sign for me that the person doesn't want to see their bad sides or thinks of covering them up for some gains. (that's how I perceive it) But I'm not sure if she had it, since I'm more listening to it than looking this. But there is a thing that I don't get from daphnefaetv's comment. Why do you perceive her as selfless, if she said don't let other people's (shit) chaos invade your personal space and distance yourselves from them. I love how accountable she is. She isn't blaming other people, she isn't moping about events she can't change. Focusing on what "I can do" is a really beautiful lesson
Well yes, but she has a strong family structure and community. Her summers in Greece and feeling obligated to marry within her culture is a strong indication. Not everyone has those, especially several generations into the US. A certain narcissism sets in with success that can affect the mental health of your children, especially with this whole perfectionist mindset. Raising kids is an imperfect process. I'd love to see her interviewed in 20 years and see if she's changed at all.
There are two places to find the answers you have in your life. You can look inside or you can look outside. The people who look outside dream. Those who look inside are awakened.
And she still seems to have empathy. In other words, she doesn't have to trash talk people to bring herself up. She is just using examples of those with a victim mindset to show it isn't productive. Some people have maybe had to much trauma that is almost physically impossible for their brain and body to leave behind, like an addiction. This is why she says people have to want to leave their trauma and what keeps them trapped in their identity. It's the same for addiction, the only way someone can get over that is if they truly want to, and then find the resources to do it. The mindset of truly wanting to, vs not, is the key difference. It's true that some people are more equipped to do this and therefore more fortunate in that regard, though.
@@bluemonday70-bl5ne she's pretty critical of people who suffer from depression, as if it's a waste of time. It's a very old world point of view. It's practical though and she'd make an incredible life coach.

She definitely cares what other people think of her. That is a big part of her training and how she is able to do her job and her life. This entire I service was about how to get respect without demanding it. Respect is earned by caring what people think of what you say, how you say it, what you do and how you do it.

Very true, on the other hand some people always say "I didn't learn that at school" as an excuse that they lack knowledge on a particular subject. In reality school is just scratching the surface in regards to education, you must always be curious and seek knowledge on EVERYTHING through your whole life until the day you die.

One thing I've observed and truly appreciated is that she always mentions your name when beginning a story. I believe this is crucial as it fosters a sense of intimacy and connection between the conversation partners. Research supports this, suggesting that mentioning someone's name can encourage them to stay engaged and feel more involved in this conversation.
I absolutely hate it when people do that. Its annoying af to repeat someone's name as if they're not listening especially when they already ARE listening.
The reason this lady sounds so logical and humble is because she has an attitude of gratitude and is thankful for even the very smallest things that she is given in life. We could all take a lesson out of that playbook

Evy's boundary setting is healthy and should be something everyone needs to practice. The problem we have in the U.S. is no one respects those boundaries.
The most important thing I saw in this interview was that when he talked, no matter for how long, she never said a word and kept her eyes on him. She was listening and present.
What i saw is the complete opposite. He is he one listenning and studying her and she is full of herself and doing all the things she said other people do.
@@simomaaroufihaving that reaction to this particular interview and women tells me that you're not experiencing the same reality as the rest of us, because you're a misogynist and probably also a bigot. I highly doubt that you've given even 1/10th of this woman's effort to our country in service. You can't see past your own nose, and people who eclipse you are perceived as a threat, especially women because you feel emasculated. To you, everything is a zero sum game. I'd feel pity for you, but I doubt you deserve it.
I once read a book by a psychologist about childhood trauma. One of the things that I always remember is that while kids need to process and talk about the things they experience, a weekly therapy appointment where they are expected to conjure up all these negative feelings can actually be detrimental. What matters is that they have a strong family bond, know they are understood and can talk about it any time they want and have been able to go through that initial processing...but a weekly date to go over it all again and again where they are expected to dig it all up and be sad all over again actually works against their ability to move on.
Then people become dependent on the feeling. That's how we get those people who say "I'm never leaving my therapist, can't live without them". They want to go and spill the beans, cry a bit, feel "validated" and go. More than validation it becomes a cycle of victim mentality
What I learned through good therapy is how to process stuck emotions. The reason people struggle to overcome anxiety, depression, and victimizhood mentality is because they have poor emotional regulation and were not taught that by caregivers. If children are crying and then being yelled at for crying, they will be afraid to feel things for fear of upsetting someone else. EMDR, meditation, and many other practices can be used in therapy and also practiced outside of therapy to help overcome these stuck, trapped emotions and experiences. We can develop better emotional maturity if we work through it. This woman just says "let it go", but if you can't process it, you will be stuck in it. My guess is that her parents were better skilled in helping her as a child with emotional regulation than others and have a very stable base to build on. But she's unaware of why others struggle bc this came naturally to her. A good therapist will not allow a patient to get stuck in rumination. They will try to help you feel the feeling and get it to pass through you. I wish I had known this decades ago, though it's never too late.
It’s unfortunate that this form of bad therapy isn’t addressed when going to therapy becomes a legal requirement in a case. Then there’s more salt added to the child’s wound.
This lady is smart. Be warm to people but if you are too friendly not good. True…I often said in the school years ago when the school system said we are now calling all the kids our friends everything was we are all friends. I thought this was wrong because as adults shouldn’t we be on a different level than the kids? Does this make sense to anyone ? It is like as a parent you are the authority figure.

You need to tap into your emotions to understand yourself and others, it is what brings about self awareness and a social conscious. Feeling, validating, processing and managing your emotions is the key to be able to govern yourself. Emotions and facts are NOT mutually exclusive, they go hand in hand. To stray from our emotions is to stray from the truth.

@@pippa3150 well, I don't state that it happens this way in a hundred percent cases. Sometimes that's true and realization itself is enough to change everything. But it's obviously not enough to hear "just stop being a victim" to start feeling different immediately.
After years of counseling for childhood issues that bled into adult issues and never getting the golden ticket of healing, I just gave up one day and accepted that I would just be living with my issues the rest of my life. I would still try to improve myself but I accepted that I was never going to be "fixed." To my surprise it was the most freeing and healing thing Ive ever done. As she said, to not carry that "trailer" behind me was such an incredible relief. There is still always some level of discordance but I don't give the beast my time and thoughts for it to feed on and I'm so much better for it.

You should work on muting your bias from past experiences so that you can live in the present. Otherwise, you miss opportunities by dismissing the talent of 50% of the population

I normally would not listen through a 2 hour interview but this woman’s insight commanded my attention and I literally gained my own insight listening to hers. Thank you for being you and giving us your story!
I'm 26 and have had a consistently messed up life due to being raised around a ton of meth addiction, poverty, and violence. Most of my family members (including siblings) were dead by my early 20s as a result. I think her advice about not letting your trauma become your identity is so valuable. I went to therapy for 2 years and for some reason my mental health just kept getting worse and worse. I realized it was because I was re-traumatizing myself because once I stopped going it felt like I'd taken a backpack filled with bricks off. Therapy can be a great tool but there is a limit where it does far more harm than good. I think a lot of people have a personality type where therapy is actually very bad for them and I am one of those types of people. It's incredibly scary to think we're as free and capable as we allow ourselves to be, especially when we've only ever seen those around us fail. Realizing I didn't have to be that person was devastating at first but I'm so much better off for it.

The fact that you are listening to this podcast shows that you are interested in learning and growing as a person. I wish you well in your journey and hope that you have a happy and fulfilling life.
Therapy May have been Detrimental due to an uninformed Therapist. As an Example: If the Therapist wants to Apply ‘Cognitive Therapy’ & Focuses on the Client Changing & Accepting all of the Responsibility to Change their Perspective. Maybe the Person’s Real Problem, is that they are Actively Being ABUSED, & Mental, Emotional, & Neglect Counts. So, the therapist is Essentially Gaslighting the Client & Not Hearing their Painful Reality! Another guess: I can Imagine that if There is a Therapist that just allows the Client to talk& talk & talk, without any Input… Maybe the Therapist wants a STEADY CLIENT to help PAD their INCOME SECURITY, instead of actually Helping the Client to Progress & Heal. Think Outside the Assumption that YOU were to BLAME as that limits Other Real Possibilities… The Spiritual: GOD is Real & Wants 100% JOY, GOOD , LOVE, Prosperity, & ALL Positives. So, we can have Ugly Stuff, Especially from other People’s Bad Choices… But, we have to Choose Our Goals & Good & take Action toward WHO WE REALLY ARE! 🙏🏻 Blessings!☀️🌸🕊🍃

Yea honestly I believe her experience and what she has seen makes her words so much more powerful than the knowledge therapists gain in school. Sure, it's also knowledge, but it's only this sort of life or death situations and meeting all these different people in life that teach you the best and most valuable life lessons hands on.

You don't have the skills. You can change that any day you want. Setting boundaries isn't just a natural skill your born with. My advice is don't look at the problem as this giant thing. Change can be a slow and often one of the most difficult process. Unfortunately there are so many things to distract us from confronting our our real issues . You recognize the issue. You did what you knew what to do at the time don't beat yourself up about the past. It's a skill based problem now. Learn how you got to where you are and learn how to not go back there. Personal change is one of the hardest thing I've personally ever done. But it has been my hardest struggles that have always turned the out to be most impactful of my life. Who cares how you are paying the price now. Every day is another day to change the things we do not like in our lives. It's also another day to buy a new pair of shoes and not deal with any of it.

Sixteen yr old kid who was presumably paralysed with fear and couldn’t show his hands after many minutes of being told he would be SHOT if he didn’t do so. He wasn’t deaf. He wasn’t holding a lethal weapon. He was petrified. This is truly remarkable.
The interviewer is just low-average; he has pre-arranged questions and does not follow up and ask "why". He gets an answer and moves to the next pre-arranged question. I get the impression that the guests know the questions in advance and have prepared answers. I'll never watch this guy again. Look at Larry King interviews. Everything a person says has within it another question to ask "why". This guy does not draw the guest out. He's a cardboard cutout, with narration/speaking skill only.

Well yes, but she has a strong family structure and community. Her summers in Greece and feeling obligated to marry within her culture is a strong indication. Not everyone has those, especially several generations into the US. A certain narcissism sets in with
success that can affect the mental health of your children, especially with this whole perfectionist mindset. Raising kids is an imperfect process. I'd love to see her interviewed in 20 years and see if she's changed at all.

There are two places to find the answers you have in your life. You can look inside or you can look outside. The people who look outside dream. Those who look inside are awakened.
And she still seems to have empathy. In other words, she doesn't have to trash talk people to bring herself up. She is just using examples of those with a victim mindset to show it isn't productive. Some people have maybe had to much trauma that is almost physically impossible for their brain and body to leave behind, like an addiction. This is why she says people have to want to leave their trauma and what keeps them trapped in their identity. It's the same for addiction, the only way someone can get over that is if they truly want to, and then find the resources to do it. The mindset of truly wanting to, vs not, is the key difference. It's true that some people are more equipped to do this and therefore more fortunate in that regard, though.

I once read a book by a psychologist about childhood trauma. One of the things that I always remember is that while kids need to process and talk about the things they experience, a weekly therapy appointment where they are expected to conjure up all these negative feelings can actually be detrimental. What matters is that they have a strong family bond, know they are understood and can talk about it any time they want and have been able to go through that initial processing...but a weekly date to go over it all again and again where they are expected to dig it all up and be sad all over again actually works against their ability to move on.
Then people become dependent on the feeling. That's how we get those people who say "I'm never leaving my therapist, can't live without them". They want to go and spill the beans, cry a bit, feel "validated" and go. More than validation it becomes a cycle of victim mentality
Yeah… this is bad therapy guys. Good therapy supports you in personal growth and independence.
What I learned through good therapy is how to process stuck emotions. The reason people struggle to overcome anxiety, depression, and victimizhood mentality is because they have poor emotional regulation and were not taught that by caregivers. If children are crying and then being yelled at for crying, they will be afraid to feel things for fear of upsetting someone else. EMDR, meditation, and many other practices can be used in therapy and also practiced outside of therapy to help overcome these stuck, trapped emotions and experiences. We can develop better emotional maturity if we work through it. This woman just says "let it go", but if you can't process it, you will be stuck in it. My guess is that her parents were better skilled in helping her as a child with emotional regulation than others and have a very stable base to build on. But she's unaware of why others struggle bc this came naturally to her. A good therapist will not allow a patient to get stuck in rumination. They will try to help you feel the feeling and get it to pass through you. I wish I had known this decades ago, though it's never too late.
It’s unfortunate that this form of bad therapy isn’t addressed when going to therapy becomes a legal requirement in a case. Then there’s more salt added to the child’s wound.
This lady is smart. Be warm to people but if you are too friendly not good. True…I often said in the school years ago when the school system said we are now calling all the kids our friends everything was we are all friends. I thought this was wrong because as adults shouldn’t we be on a different level than the kids? Does this make sense to anyone ? It is like as a parent you are the authority figure.

You need to tap into your emotions to understand yourself and others, it is what brings about self awareness and a social conscious. Feeling, validating, processing and managing your emotions is the key to be able to govern yourself. Emotions and facts are NOT mutually exclusive, they go hand in hand. To stray from our emotions is to stray from the truth.

After years of counseling for childhood issues that bled into adult issues and never getting the golden ticket of healing, I just gave up one day and accepted that I would just be living with my issues the rest of my life. I would still try to improve myself but I accepted that I was never going to be "fixed." To my surprise it was the most freeing and healing thing Ive ever done. As she said, to not carry that "trailer" behind me was such an incredible relief. There is still always some level of discordance but I don't give the beast my time and thoughts for it to feed on and I'm so much better for it.

You should work on muting your bias from past experiences so that you can live in the present. Otherwise, you miss opportunities by dismissing the talent of 50% of the population

I'm 26 and have had a consistently messed up life due to being raised around a ton of meth addiction, poverty, and violence. Most of my family members (including siblings) were dead by my early 20s as a result. I think her advice about not letting your trauma become your identity is so valuable. I went to therapy for 2 years and for some reason my mental health just kept getting worse and worse. I realized it was because I was re-traumatizing myself because once I stopped going it felt like I'd taken a backpack filled with bricks off. Therapy can be a great tool but there is a limit where it does far more harm than good. I think a lot of people have a personality type where therapy is actually very bad for them and I am one of those types of people. It's incredibly scary to think we're as free and capable as we allow ourselves to be, especially when we've only ever seen those around us fail. Realizing I didn't have to be that person was devastating at first but I'm so much better off for it.
"we're as free and capable as we allow ourselves to be" are very wise and beautiful words. I work with people with similar backgrounds to yours. The programming is hard to break out of. The fact that you are listening to this podcast shows that you are interested in learning and growing as a person. I wish you well in your journey and hope that you have a happy and fulfilling life.

Therapy May have been Detrimental due to an uninformed Therapist. As an Example: If the Therapist wants to Apply ‘Cognitive Therapy’ & Focuses on the Client Changing & Accepting all of the Responsibility to Change their Perspective. Maybe the Person’s Real Problem, is that they are Actively Being ABUSED, & Mental, Emotional, & Neglect Counts. So, the therapist is Essentially Gaslighting the Client & Not Hearing their Painful Reality!
Another guess: I can Imagine that if There is a Therapist that just allows the Client to talk& talk & talk, without any Input… Maybe the Therapist wants a STEADY CLIENT to help PAD their INCOME SECURITY, instead of actually Helping the Client to Progress & Heal.
Think Outside the Assumption that YOU were to BLAME as that limits Other Real Possibilities…
The Spiritual: GOD is Real & Wants 100% JOY, GOOD , LOVE, Prosperity, & ALL Positives. So, we can have Ugly Stuff, Especially from other People’s Bad Choices… But, we have to Choose Our Goals & Good & take Action toward WHO WE REALLY ARE!

I’ve always realized that the classic psychotherapy doesn’t work for me because it stops me in the past and in my healthy energy to move on.

Yea honestly I believe her experience and what she has seen makes her words so much more powerful than the knowledge therapists gain in school. Sure, it's also knowledge, but it's only this sort of life or death situations and meeting all these different people in life that teach you the best and most valuable life lessons hands on.

I recognize that I haven't had the boundaries needed with people and am paying in ways I can't even begin to express.
You don't have the skills. You can change that any day you want. Setting boundaries isn't just a natural skill your born with. My advice is don't look at the problem as this giant thing. Change can be a slow and often one of the most difficult process. Unfortunately there are so many things to distract us from confronting our our real issues . You recognize the issue. You did what you knew what to do at the time don't beat yourself up about the past. It's a skill based problem now. Learn how you got to where you are and learn how to not go back there. Personal change is one of the hardest thing I've personally ever done. But it has been my hardest struggles that have always turned the out to be most impactful of my life. Who cares how you are paying the price now. Every day is another day to change the things we do not like in our lives. It's also another day to buy a new pair of shoes and not deal with any of it.

Best interview ever. It’s the scenario that her training could never predict. Sixteen yr old kid who was presumably paralysed with fear and couldn’t show his hands after many minutes of being told he would be SHOT if he didn’t do so. He wasn’t deaf. He wasn’t holding a lethal weapon. He was petrified. This is truly remarkable.
The interviewer is just low-average; he has pre-arranged questions and does not follow up and ask "why". He gets an answer and moves to the next pre-arranged question. I get the impression that the guests know the questions in advance and have prepared answers.
I'll never watch this guy again.
Look at Larry King interviews. Everything a person says has within it another question to ask "why". This guy does not draw the guest out. He's a cardboard cutout, with narration/speaking skill only.

Not often I look at someone with such respect. The way she has reflected upon all of her life experiences and turned them into such profound lessons/wisdom. One must evolve in all areas, mental/physical/spiritual. I have found my Guru.

Reflecting on my journey, I realise I could have advocated for myself more assertively instead of being overly accommodating or self-deprecating. I’m in exactly the same position as you. I retired 4 years ago at 47 after exactly 30 years in the corporate game. My eyes were opened to an alternative stress free and more thoughtful way of living. My relationships have flourished with all the important people in my life and unexpectedly I’m better off financially too.
