The Zeiss 55mm is such a good lens. The new 50mm f1.2 is also so nice. But for the size and price I will probably just stick with the 55mm

@@LeeZavitz yes defintly considering this as another body..currently have the A7R3..because it has updated specs, processor, sensor, sensor curtain finally!.. and form factor body is bigger..etc..I skipped the A7R4 bc for me besides the obvious 61 megapixel..it wasn't too crazy of an upgrade..I am waiting on the A7R5!..lol all the upgraded specs from this A74..plus more hopefully..if they keep a high megapixel the only thing I wish for is an option for a Large, Medium, Small raw file setting and that would be perfect for me..

I’m waiting for the A7IV to be released and some more thorough reviews of it before upgrading from the Canon M50 but I’ll definitely join the PPA when I commit to it!

This is the camera I was looking for last year but wasn’t announced so I bought an A7III instead. It’s my favorite camera and I might consider this camera once it’s been out for more than a year.
will have to be careful with that decision ;) next you know they will be talking about the a7RV and the a7sIV :P
@@rboydphotography the R series I’m not that interested in and the S series is more video-centric. I haven’t done a video in a long time and I have to re-learn everything about video once I get my new laptop and learn how to use s-log this and that. If I need an R or S series camera, I’ll look into that when that situation happens.
@@97nelsn yeah, similar situation myself. just find it funny that every time we buy or order something, a brand new model is usually just around the corner. 61mp is insane and I can only assume they will either improve the quality of the 61mb in the next version or try and push for say 80mb or something. the file size and the prize tag deterred me from the a7R IV. no clue where they may take the S - line of camera's as I am not really a videographer.
You seem to love shooting at very high shutter speeds (highest Ive ever really seen) but also very low ISO. Those images gotta be pitch black when you pull them up on the computer but Im sure you obviously bring out the brightness post-prod. Is this a strategy of yours?

I do tracking spot small but I’m always triggering eye af from back button. I only leave small spot on in case it can’t catch the eye and I can move focus point

How does the Canon R5 compare to the new Sony A7IV??
Okay, yeah. This is the video that convinced me to sell all of my gear and buy into Sony. Being able to walk around and focus on composition while the AI nails the autofocus is right up my alley. No more checking every 2-3 photos to see if I nailed the focus at f1.4 on my D750.
100% it’s nice being able to trust the camera for the shot and focus on composition
nice tuto ! Are you in wide, eye detection, AF-C, mode A, auto iso, AF-ON back button focus ? Do you often need to switch to tracking spot as you explained in another video ?
I’m always in manual everything. I some times switch to tracking spot if I want to make sure that if the subject is moving and the eye is lost it will still lock on to them. As for the focus zone I usually just use small flexible spot. Yes I have AF-On set to eye af it overrides any focus mode when I need it to which is great (for me personally)
Lee, the A7iv shutter sounds quite loud. Is there any way to make it quieter (beyond using the electronic shutter)?
Have to Use electronic shutter just like any camera if you want it to be silent. Only camera I’ve used that is way quieter is the A1

Maybe you could review your recommended camera setting for this shoot? There's been lots of controversy on the burst rate. I'm wondering what you thoughts were here and if you were using electronic or mechanical shutter (affecting it)?

How do you find the burst? I am concerned about the weakness of the latter (only 6ips in raw uncompressed)? Do you use a type A cfexpress card to improve the burst?
It’s not a problem for me personally, 10fps compressed raw to sd card, 6fps if you think you need uncompressed raw. The only difference between the cf express and sd card is how fast the buffer clears which is already very fast on uhsii sd cards

I may sell my A7R3 for the A74. really want the real time tracking AF as well as the gyro info for video and I feel 33mp is not a huge drop from 42mp. I would love the A7R4 but don't think I need 61 MP lol

Asking the same question for myself. I don’t do video so should I get the R or is a7iv plenty for stills
I actually sold my A7R3 because i don't use it that much. Replaced it with another A7 IV as a backup. My main A7 IV nails the dance shots I do. Also, A7 IV works better in low light situations compared to the R3 at least in my experience.. Just the files alone from an A7R4 would cause me to upgrade my editing laptop so that is a no go in that sense for me.
Noticed you hit the buffer limit a few times, but only after a lot of shots... what cards are you shooting onto? I'm assuming not CF Express? Compressed RAW?
I don’t think I hit the buffer in this video. I was just letting off instinctively because the a7iiii will fill up and basically not let you use the camera till buffer is empty. Where the a7iv empties buffer in 1-2seconds. I’m using prograde uhsii v90 cards

As a current Fuji owner, missing Sony's AF and lenses, whatcha think of shooting Cinetone S stills in heif, so that you can quickly transfer to your iPhone and mildly edit them there?
A few samples of this would be cool to see if it's a worthy heif only replacement for my film simulations.
I have presets that work awesome with Sony raw that give you Fuji look. But I’ve never tried to shoot s-cinetone jpgs. Could look awesome tbh
heif not jpg though. Heif seems like the perfect in between JPG and RAW. Since it allows more versatility than JPGs for minimal edits like +1/3 exposure and stuff like that without having to start from scratch with a RAW (presets not withstanding).

Cause i think that at uncompressed raw images the fastest busrt is 6 per second with mechanical shutter at a7iv.
It’s compressed raw and jpg. yeah uncompressed raw and jpg is slightly slower burst rate

Hi Lee, nice video and photos. Question: I got a A9 and my images doesn’t look that sharp enough as I would like… do you think it could be a problem with my lenses / settings…., or do I need a more resolution camera? Thanks
Won’t be resolution issue. You can get beautiful sharp images out of an a7siii and it’s 12mp. Maybe you are not using the autofocus modes correctly for the scene or subject you are shooting

I personally shoot Sony. I haven’t owned a Fuji camera in 3.5 years. They are fun to shoot with and have great film simulations but I had a lot of reliability issues which made me move over to Sony and it’s been rock solid no issues since

Hey Lee, i loved what images you got they were great but it feels like you are overlooking the story of the images. Dirt pathways are the road less traveled & drive in theater is a past-time soon to be forgotten. It may not be your style but i would love to see it more in the UA-cam space... 🤞
So, go shoot it and make it so.
It’s easy to think about these things watching a video back. But in the moment there’s a million things on my mind. One major thing you never hear me talk about is being my own behind the scenes camera guy and moving that around and making sure focus and exposure looks good before I start shooting photos again. Making sure the audio for the video is good. Making sure we don’t run out of sunlight. Trying to also be some what creative with the photos. Making sure lighting is good for photos. Making sure I show a few features of the camera so that people learn something. It’s just a lot, if I wasn’t doing all those things and I could just be in the moment and taking in the scene and doing pure photography then I could do what you are saying, I appreciate the comment and feed back. Just wanted to let you know all that is involved and why UA-cam behind the scenes is never my best photography work

Really nice shots and Ive watched dozens of a7IV reviews. Still see no reason to spend over $2700 after tax to replace my a7R3 with it, especially when I only paid $1400 for the a7R3 with less than 10k shots on it. Question, why are you having to use small tracking spot? Is the eye AF that unreliable on this?
Eye af is amazing, it’s only when she turns her head away from me or looks down with the hat on and it casts a dark shadow. It’s the reason I’m using it. But I’m also still setting it up to manually trigger eye af with the af-on button. It’s just what I’m use to. That’s why you always see the small box on screen yet it’s tracking her eye
@@LeeZavitz ok. This has the real time Eye AF tracking though right? Where you just point it at somebody and the green box shows up without pressing anything?
Yeah sometimes I don’t want it to lock on to an eye. So I trigger that on and off manually. Sometimes I’m on set shooting behind the scenes and there is multiple people and I might only want to focus on a specific person. Reason why I have it setup that way

The screen isn’t really a hindrance it’s just different. I personally don’t love it for everything. But it’s nice for video. It’s usually only people shooting video that want it

Last year, I wanted to upgrade to mirrorless, up from my a99 and I waited for months... MONTHS! Thinking Sony would finally release the a7IV and it would be better than anything in that price point... Well... My wait was pointless as the a7IV is disappointing for how much it costs. It costs as much as Canons R6 and 600 EUR more than Nikons Z6ll but is worse than both - all while being a newly released camera, a year younger than the R6 and Z6ll! I just ended up going with two Z6ll's! Months wasted on waiting for nothing...
if you don’t have any investment in emount glass it’s basically up to what you want in a camera to switch to.
Are all these photos edited with your presets?
No. They are jpgs. I can’t open the raw files in camera raw yet. I just did a few tweaks to help them fit my vibe

I am considering buying a new Sony camera. For photos only. If I buy an A7-3, then I will have the money left for good lenses. If I buy A7-4 I will have to buy cheaper lenses)
Both are great choices for photography. I’m keeping my a7iii as a backup

100% you can also put it into super35 mode to shoot 4K 24 as well, this is a feature I miss using the a7siii. It’s nice to punch in sometimes

This or the a7riv I don’t care about video at all.
Both are great. But a7iv has the newest autofocus system. That said if you need super high res images than the a7Riv is your choice
