Back to Sony after years of being allergic to them---because of the color science. Getting the A74 I'm amazed at how good the image and color look, and what great strides Sony has made in every way. VERY impressed as a video only shooter.
That Audi is insane, I’m a camera guy, but watching this video actually reminded me how much a crazy awesome a car like this can be. Give me an A1 and this Audi and i can live every day with a smile 😊 This review was probably one of the best one I’ve seen, no BS. The real world tests make all the difference….thank you for not just going over the camera specs…
Appreciate that!!! We try to always actually shoot awesome things when we get new gear. There are things you learn about the camera with actual experience that you won't with studio tests. And yeah, this Audi was insane!
Late to the comment party on this one, but I have to say, I just picked up an a7iv and I love the crop. As a solo event shooter, that extra reach in 4k60 and the apsc crop mode, in general, comes in clutch. Much more versatile than the a7siii. 👍🏽
@@learningcameras really interested in that Dan - my D750 does really nice 1080 maybe because there is no 4K. Im happy with good quality HD with sharp lenses for social media.
Love the sensor shutter, auto human/animal eye focus and breathing compensation; just preordered one. The only thing I wish to keep is the flip screen, will keep my A7R4 just for that.
My first question is directed @ Sally: As a Canon shooter, do you prefer the color science of the A74 over the R6? My second question is for Dan: Dan, you mentioned that there is a big improvement on Sony's new touch screen system. However, do you find it *comparable* to Canon's R5/ R6? Or is it still lacking/ lagging behind Canon's mirrorless?
Sally: I wouldn't say prefer but I absolutely can make my favorite images with either camera! Dan: The Sony touch screen still lags behind the R6 both in quality and in touch lag. But the lag is low enough that I wouldn't call it an "issue" anymore but I'd still give the edge to the R6 with screen tech
With one change this could be the ultimate hybrid camera. Let's hope enough people complain and Sony gives us some form of full frame 4k 60p! The A1 does 4K 120p with the same image processor and a 50MP sensor so it's definitely possible.
I don't think this will happen, probably it would overheat or something, I think they just looking to save money on it and now I feel like back when I was pissed at Canon when they were pulling this kind of crap and moved to Sony...
@@EduarFilms Definitely feels like a Canon move! With the A1 processor this should be possible. I would take overheating seeing as how most people aren't doing long takes with slow motion.
@@brandonmurray3629 It will not be possible, especially from a marketing standpoint. Getting a 4k image from a 7k 24mb sensor requires alot of processing power and surly will overheat but if it was possible then it will render the a7siii useless because now the only reason to get an siii is because of 4k 120
Nice look at the new camera. I think your back and forth style, having one person do video, and the other talk about photos, is a really good format. Keep up the good work!
I really like when you switch the dial to video. The menu becomes a video menu. And finally a fully functional touch screen. And when you switch back to stills it becomes a stills menu. Including the quick menu. Isn't the 4k 30 full frame and really nice quality ? The A74 seems really nice but I am still sticking with my A7r lll for now. ( the shutter is the most fragile part of the camera. And having the shutter exposed while changing lenses is a little scary. One tiny grain of sand on the shutter could destroy it when it opens back up. So i would still be super careful changing lenses ) i am not sure if having a shutter exposed when changing lenses is better than having the sensor exposed.
Again, having the shutter exposed is an OPTION in the menu. You can set it either way so you can turn this feature off if you want. I personally would rather not having my photos/video ruined by dust so I turn it on if I know I'll be changing lenses on location
@@mem5922 4 seconds sounds about right but usually it takes me way longer to get the lens out of my bag or even take the rear cap off so 4 seconds wouldn't bother me. Shut camera off, get lens, take back cap off, remove lens, attach new lens
Why Sony? If it wasn’t for the cropped 4k 60 I would have preordered it already to pair with my A7R4. I also wished they just put two of the CF express cards and addressed the rolling shutter. This kinda of sucks for us hybrid shooters.
@@kifley19 So you want Sony to add another $500 U.S. dollars to the already $2,500 price tag? You all are basically wanting Sony too sell their A1 at $2,500 which they are not going to do
@@DanasAnis Yes it is true but we are not in 2008. We can't shoot video because Rolling shutter not allow to make great video without rolling shutter control and indoor Lights. It is great film dead people, sleepy subject, non moveable subject. Any moving subject is pointless for 4k24, 30p oversampled from 7k due to rolling shutter.
I was so excited for this camera and was going to order one because I sold my last photo camera (and still occasionally get photo jobs). Then yesterday I saw the Ronin 4D and I couldn’t be less interested in the IV now. Trying to figure out what gear to sell to buy the 4D. Things I have wanted that camera has: internal options for everything from small file sizes all the way to RAW. Then they let you record on an SSD! Why are we still using SD cards or these crazy expensive CFExpress. Dear Sony, switch to NVME storage and give us 1 and 2tb options! It’s faster, bigger, and cheaper.
Haha. The only thing that I'm not sold on the 4D yet is lenses. I need to see more about the options for using other lenses on it...mainly zooms and wide aperture primes since the DJI offerings don't include those
@@learningcameras Yea, so stop what you’re doing and give us more Ronin 4D videos! I’ve been wavering about hitting the preorder button for 20 hours now. I’m almost there! 💴
Thanks for the comprehensive content! However, I do have one point of contention. 16:03 Depth of field, bokeh, etc. is NOT affected at all by sensor size or by how much of the sensor is being used (crop mode). It is strictly based on lens and composition. The reason a full frame cameras yield more bokeh is because you're switching out to a 50% longer (mm) lens for the same composition. It is the longer lens that brings the bokeh, not the sensor size. Said another way, you can put a 50mm on an A7iv and the bokeh is exactly the SAME in full frame mode and in crop mode as long as the spacing is maintained. If you re-frame everything, backing up the camera or subject to regain proper framing, THAT is what is changing your bokeh, not crop mode. Anyway, thanks for the great content otherwise!
So sure I guess, if you are making all those other assumptions and that you are choosing a focal length randomly. But assuming you are choosing a focal length based on distance to subject and framing (usually how I pick a focal length), then changing the sensor size changes depth of field. Put another way, if I'm shooting with a 50mm because I want that particular focal length and then decide to switch to 4K60, I'll be forced to switch focal lengths in order to maintain the same perspective thus changing my depth of field. That's a more likely scenario assuming I'm not shooting the entire time in the apsc mode.
I'm pretty sure I'm going to preorder this camera today, but I'm not going to lie, the buffer issue is concerning to me. And for some reason, that doesn't seem like a firmware update will fix it.
Great review Dan. I'm also a bit disappointed about the 4k 60p not being full frame.. do you think that it could be possible to add a new option of 4K 60p full frame with line skipping via future firmware update?
@@learningcameras Same here.. and looking at the Canon R6 photo and video capabilities I find it's a really strange decision from Sony.. I think they decided to protect the SIII sales instead of going 24MP-4k 60p in ff and killing the competition.. so now I think I will simply wait a bit more, collect the money and buy a second A1 body.
Great review Dan and Sally!! l think that the a74 would be great for weddings, which is what l desire to get into.l only wish that the 4k60 wasn't cropped.l guess you can't have everything.
@@simonomis5246 they actually did not protect A7SIII in any way, they just pushed away potential buyers from their ecosystem, for example 20 people already are leaning towards getting Canon Eos R6, because A7SIII 12 megapixels are too low, but 20 at Eos R6 is good enough and 4k ff 60fps with almost unnoticeable crop, so not only they ruined few sales for A7IV, but probably few hundred people will invest in competing ecosystems. New to Sony gear, who buy A7IV, for them next logical step would be to upgrade to A7SIII if they need more on video side, or to A7R, A9 if they need more on photography or A1 for ultimate solution once they grow to it. But why bother, let these potential buyers look elsewhere. I am a small fish, can't afford A7SIII nor A1, but I am invested in Sony system, this move by Sony makes me doubt. The only reason I would upgrade to A7IV is just because changing systems is expensive deal to me. And as a hybridshooter, I am not impressed with A7IV. A7III for it's time was a wow and what made me go with Sony, A7IV on the other hand is rather disappointing only because of 4k 60fps crop. While I greet the increase of megapixels, 24 in A7III is plenty enough, so if they went 24 megapixels but 4k 60 fps no crop, that would have been a lot more exciting. A7IV is great camera though, however, that one thing makes me doubt, I am in a really big need for a second camera and was expecting A7IV to be it, even was looking into getting a loan, but A7IV doesn't seem worth this commitment. And I don't know what to do, I need a camera that can do 4k 60fps no or very small crop, I also need it for photography, A7SIII while perfect for video, doesn't fit my photography needs, Canon Eos R6 makes more sense in this case, but I already invested in FE mount lenses and switching systems is a pain. So did marketing guys save sales of A7SIII or did cause some potrntial damage to the sales of Sony Alpha ecosystem in general. I know A7IV will sell as hot cakes anyway, but doesn't seem it will be to the extent they could. Unless they do a firmware update to bring 4k 60fps no crop in some way.
This review is a bit confusing to me. You like the camera but in the video you basically admitted that on real world job sites the camera never came out of your bag (because of 4K60 crop). How could you recommend this camera then? Even in the description of this review you said the dream camera for photographers and videographers but you never even used it on your own paid shoots! Your comment should have been, if you are a paid professional the 4K 60 crop is a deal breaker for me and is not recommended. Everything the lady said about the stills portion of the camera was great to hear and I appreciate her talking about the colour science as I currently shoot an A9 and will appreciate that upgrade.
So...I happen to have the A1 and A7SIII so for me, the lack of 4k60 full frame meant I didn't use it for some personal video projects since I already own plenty of cameras with it...not necessarily that my clients "demand" it or even that I "need" it. Tons of pro level video cameras don't have full frame sensors like the FS7 and Canon C70. If I didn't have those other cameras, I would have absolutely used 4k60 crop and it would have been fine...I just would have compensated for the change in focal length with different lenses. If it didn't have 4k60 at all that would have been a dealbreaker for me. But, if the 4k60 was full frame, I absolutely would have used this camera way more even though I have more expensive cameras like the A1 and SIII. On the stills side, the camera was perfect except for the buffer filling up crazy fast even with UHS-II SD cards.
@@learningcameras Nothing from what you just explained and had in the video is consistent with a "dream everything" camera then. I would hold back on hyperbole as it negates objectivity.
@@typerlover Are you a Canon fanboy or something? It's clear what he meant. This is a perfect hybrid shooters camera and if he wouldn't have the A1 and SIII, He would shoot with the A7IV.
@@Benjamin_Jehne Not a fan boy, if an A1 does video and photo better then that would be the dream everything camera. Do you work for Sony or did you get a review unit sent to you as well that you can't question advertisement versus objectivity?
@@typerlover I guess Dan means perfect for the price point. Obviously the A7sIII is superior when it comes to video features (but is not as good in its photo features) as it is a video centered camera, and the A1 being both video and photo centered and perfect for everyone, but both of them, especially the A1 of course, cost way more than the A7IV does.
I now shoot with A7RIII bodies but I think, this camera is worth a "downgrade" from the R series. I loved the 36mpix of my A7RI, for me personally this was the mpix sweetspot for my work and so I was very happy as they announced the 33mpix A7IV. I don't use 4K 60, just 4K 24 and so this is less of a problem for my work. This camera sounds so underwhelming at first, but when you take a closer look it is a real banger. This camera has such a wide range it's impressive.
Really appreciate the solid review on this. I have two questions for you. One, at 15:38 you started talking about not using the full sensor in 4K. It was a little unclear if you were talking about 4K60 or all 4K modes? So do you get the full sensor in 4K30? Also, I'm trying to decide between this and the R6. I do about 70% video for my cycling UA-cam channel. 30% will be for photography. I'm also in Florida so overheating on the R6 is a concern for me, as I often shoot bike reviews outside in the summertime. Thanks for any input!
Sorry for the late reply! Yes, you do get full frame in 4k30 and 4k24. For longer takes, the R6 could be an issue with overheating but for shorter clips with the camera off in between, it should be fine
Hi Dan. Just bought this to add to the A7s3. Thanks to you I'm more informed. Where is the video on the new menu and set up please? Just in case I'm missing things from this camera. Thanks Lee.
For me, no 4k60 would have been a dealbreaker, no Full frame 4k60 is a major blow. Tons of good cameras like the Sony FS7 and Canon C70 have super 35 sensors so I'm sure we'll be OK but it makes switching between photo and video a pain because of the crop, means I need different lens options, and means I can't get the shallow DOF or low light performance in 4k60 that the camera is capable of...again, major blow. But at least I can shoot it...and almost everything I shot was in 4k60 hahaha so obviously cropped
@@learningcameras I was actually hoping to upgrade from the Canon R6 (a camera that has 4k60 at an unnoticable 1.1x crop) because of the overheating issues, but it's looking like because of the A7IV's significant crop and really bad rolling shutter problems, I'm going to have to wait or look elsewhere.
great reviews, I am still on the Panasonic GH5 and want to upgrade to a Sony Full frame. Eyeballing the A7s3 but now this one came out. I do mostly video, UA-cam, product reviews, some event videos, done weddings and music venues etc but also do photos, landscape, product photos etc. but still probable 80-90% video stuff. I really don't shoot much 4k 60 or 120 but would be nice incase I do. I would have to buy all new lenses of course too (cost more than the bodies) so the a74 being a $1k less could get my that extra lens. Ugh. still not sure which one to get.
Thanks! I mean there are actually quite a few areas where the A7IV is actually better. The only big weaknesses of the A7IV are rolling shutter in full frame, no 4k120, and 4k60 is cropped. Otherwise there are a a few areas it beats the A7SIII. The only reason I use the A7SIII is that I often need 4k60 and 120fps but I just bought the A7IV as a good photo camera that can also shoot video
Great video! A couple of basic info misses: Does it use the same battery as the others? What grip? Rolling shutter? Would you quantify the "loud shutter"? Relative to A7III? A9II? Thanks!
Same battery but I'm not sure if it's the same battery grip. Rolling shutter is not better...usually more resolution doesn't help unless it's a faster sensor and this is not. The shutter sound is basically the same as the A1 and A7III but those are MUCH louder than Canon's newer cameras like the R6 and R5. I don't even need silent shutter on those cameras
Awesome review! 💕 Much appreciate! I’m a Canon user and was just wondering if you’ve tried this with a Sigma MC-11 and Sigma and Canon lenses for photography? How would they perform? Thanks 😊
Hey! So I have and for basic point to point autofocus, it's usable but if you want continuous autofocus or focus during video, definitely go native lenses
I’m debating between the A7IV and the Canon R6..Such a tough choice..I feel like you get more bang for your buck on the R6 if you arnt fussed on MP and can deal with 20.1. But that A7IV is sexy
By your analysis the canon R6 seems to be a better camera still. Meanwhile jumping from 24 - 33 mp is not a big deal, saying it's astronomical is quite overboard. Pls what is the sync speed? I will also love to know if the raws sizes can be changed like in nikon and Canon.
Almost the opposite actually. The A7IV is better than the R6 in just about every area for the same price. The only exception is that the R6 is lower resolution which means faster especially when shooting with slower SD cards. Now video the R6 has full frame 4K60 which is a big advantage
@@learningcameras wow every other area???? Let's check on that.. 10fps vs 12fps or even 20fps on silent mode. Not even close specially on how much the sony slows down in uncompressed Better lcd on the R6 Less rolling shutter on the R6 easily Better animal eye AF with the R6 Much bigger buffer in the R6. 4k60p full frame vs the crop with the Sony And if the A1 is an indication, the R6 has more accurate eye AF. The Canon can focus at lower light levels as well. Less rolling shutter for photos too. So tell me again how is the sony superior as your boldly claim???
Great vid! I just need to know 2 things before doing my move: Does this camera has AA filter like the entire a7 series? And is the shutter life spected like the a7 series too? (200k) or 500k like the others? Thank you!
Would be nice, if there is some kind of AA filter, as all the R-series camera have major problems with heavy moiré. I shoot a lot of product stuff, and it is crazy how much additional work in post is nessacceary to get high quality images without moiré. It's not just a slider... .
Pick it up as my first Sony camera? Maybe. Undecided yet. Mostly a photography shooter with wildlife interest & an interest in beginning video but, budget is limited. On the fence yet. Maybe the R5. I shoot with a Nikon D810 now. Love the quality of the photos but looking for a little more in the focus system & a lot more in the video department.
Awesome video guys, this review is Dope one of the best out there for the A7IV. I'm gonna upgrade into this one regardless the 4K60 crop mode. I have been shooting for almost 4 years with my lil' guy the A6300. I'm a hybrid shooter and used to the the crop mode, obviously. Is still a bummer the camera packed so much, improvements that Sony didn't give us the 4K60 full frame. I still believe that will be a very good seller so, just gonna get used to and enjoy what we got in our hands to keep creating content for ourselves and clients alike.Salutes!!

Don't worry Sony will give full frame in coming firmware updates and this is just pre production and Sony know that they 99% Negative feedback from customers except Sony sponsors UA-camrs.
@@learningcameras It looked incredible! You think you could do an S3 vs a74 4k 60 comparison? I'm still conflicted though I still want to pull the trigger on the 4.
These camera reviews look more and more like Tide commercials. Every new version is a huge upgrade. One has to wonder how horribly bad was the first one. Surprise, surprise, I recently tried the first A7 and it's actually pretty good.
Great video guys and the car B roll video looks so well done and professional! I'm using topaz denoise with my images from the R6 and I can shoot wildlife and nature images up to 25,600 ISO and they clean up really well. I'm sure it's a different situation correcting for video. Best of luck to you guys!
Thanks for the review, it's really well done, informative, and eye candy at the same time. Kudos! I'm waiting for pre-sale to order mine, but in the meanwhile, there is one feature that I'm really interested in and it hasn't been addressed much in any of the videos I saw online, mainly, the gyro data (VFX geek here). Would you happen to be able to share a video sample along with the gyro data? I'm really curious how can I use this in my future pipelines ;D Many thanks!
Sony nailed everything on this camera. And 100% - I can truly say the colors coming out of the new Sony's is superior to Canon and Fuji colors, especially for colored skin. You guys KILLL the review though! So awesome!
So, you never shot with any of the above-mentioned cameras? I happened to switch from the x-t4 to the canon r6 mainly for the better ergonomics and AF system, but I cannot say how the new Sony is better since I don't have it and neither do you. Don't think the reviews on UA-cam give you a good color reproduction, because all the reviewer's edits are different in their video production. Cheers
Im a Nikon hybrid shooter - I also would like full frame 4K 50p. The Z6II and A74 don't have it - so Im left with the R6 - but the R6 doesn't have custom video settings. ARRRRGGGGHHH 😃
My biggest issues with all my Sony camera so far (a7ii, a7iii, & a7Riii) is the shutter release button. Mine have worn out to the point of having to be serviced. How's the shutter button feel compared to the previous models?
I wonder, how large do your clients need those prints 😂. I found that the majority of people rarely go back to their wedding photos, which is a shame. I would straight up print the best ones and frame them, but it'll never be too big. I like that they borrowed the photo-video switch from the Fuji x-t4, and I like how they also switched from their green tint towards magenta. As always, your production is on point. 🥂
Hi Dan, I am doubting between the Canon R6 and Sony a7IV. I am a hybride shooter (60% photo/40% video). For me is it important to get good video footage handheld without a gimbal.(I had the Ronin S, but for my style of work it's not convenient). What can you advice?
Hey! I mean both cameras are solid and I don't think there is a wrong way to go and tend to prefer the A7IV in most situations but, the Canon R6 bests the A7IV with IBIS and also with the amount of lenses with built in stabilization for extra power so for handheld stable footage, the R6 with a stabilized lens would give you better results
It still gets slow pretty quickly...I think I got about 35 images tops on fast UHSII SD cards. If you use CFexpress though you can shoot like 800 images before filling the buffer
@@learningcameras What about Uncompressed and Lossless compressed. If Sony doesn't listen and this times this camera doesn't make profit like Sony a7iii did. 4k60p full frame less rolling shutter in 4k24p, 15fps and lcd Resolution is basic for decent 2022. Sony a7iii does have 0.94millions Lcd Resolution and this camera had 1.03 millions dot, I absolutely this is not improvement. We don't ask same or cloning A1 and we don't wisg 4k120p full frame in this price. For example Ferrari and Toyota is price difference but still we reach same destination without issues. Sony Cripple hammer. Only UA-camrs are not complaints because UA-camrs shut by Sony.
just like Dan, one of the main gripes i have with the a7iv is the 4k60 cropped, not that i use it a lot, but when i do, it would just be so annoying to deal with the huge change in aspect ratio. also the other downside of higher resolution is that it cannot shoot any more than 10fps, when the R6 can go up to 20; had they kept a 24mp sensor, sony could probably have bumped it to at least 15fps if not match the 20fps of the canon.
So I will add that the R6 ONLY shoots 20fps in electronic shutter and you absolutely should not use electronic shutter for fast moving subjects on either one of these cameras due to the slow sensor scan speeds. The R6 only shoots 12fps and even slower with full AF in uncompressed RAW with real time viewfinder though it is still slightly faster than the A7IV
Considering I am very late to the comments, I'm sure you already know this by now but the shutter can be silenced! So, for those loud shutter sounds you can now turn that off.
So yes and no. Absolutely the shutter can be silenced, but this is not a stacked cmos sensor so you will have to content with rolling shutter and banding depending on your subjects and lighting. So in most cases, I highly recommend NOT using electronic (silent) shutter unless you are using a stacked cmos sensor like the Sony A9 or A1. I have a friend who accidentally shot a wedding in silent shutter and ruined most of her images because of banding in the reception because of bad LED lights
So not really. I mean you can but you shouldn't. This camera does not have a Stacked cmos sensor so the readout speeds in electronic shutter are pretty slow and can show banding and flicker in artificial lighting and rolling shutter with faster moving subjects. Obviously the A7IV isn't the only camera with those issues when using electronic shutter but E shutter (silent shooting) should only be used with mostly still subjects in natural lighting for best results. I tend to use e shutter with timelapses for example to not get shutter wear but I will not use it when shooting weddings because I'm usually in artificial crappy lighting
Okay- question…. The DAY before The release announcement I sprung for an A7C. Dang. I have 23 more days to return it and wait for this one…. Me thinks I’ll hate myself if I don’t do it. What do you think and when is the delivery date looking like? 🤔
First of all...jealous! Hahaha. 2nd, I'd absolutely think of replacing the a6400 first with the A7IV as that will be a massive upgrade with 10bit 4k 422 or 420, new picture profiles, and big AF/hardware improvements. While the A7IV is technically better in most ways than the A7R3 for photos, it's not an image quality upgrade and the features are not night/day different so I'd only replace the A7R3 with the A7IV if you could also then use the camera as a 3rd video camera if it wasn't being used for photo
@@learningcameras while i love the a7r3 and 42mp I only got the a6400 for the video tracking. a7IV looks like the focus and tracking is way better than the r3? yes i would be using it for 2nd video camera at weddings if we aren't doing photo.
You are the only one to mention the variable shutter, thank you!! Is it available on all shutter ranges or just the slower ones around 60 and 120? Great video!!
Im looking to get a hybrid camera, but atm i am so torn between the sony a7iv or the canon r6, its really the drawback between the 20mp vs 33mp, and full frame 4k60 or cropped😭, any advice for a beginner getting into this space? I am looking for a hybrid :)
Hey! So definitely tough choice and both are great cameras. I will say because the R6 has a 30 minute record limit on video, a pretty low resolution sensor, and more expensive lens options, I'd lean towards the A7IV
Thanks a lot for this exhaustive review. Do you think that the autofocus performance is superior to that of the A 7 R IV? Many thanks and best regards.
Hi Dan and Sally! I love UA-cam video. I've been watching this video more than 15 time since the 22rd/10. I'm mostly want to upgrading my current A7III to A7IV. There is one thing that no one talking about the HDMI functionality of it. Do you know if the A7IV got ' Clean HDMI ' ?. Must appreciate if you can respond! Thanks Dan and Sally. Beautiful couple!!
Thanks so much!!! We really appreciate that. You absolutely get "clean HDMI" from the camera and when you are using HDMI with it, it does't disable any autofocus features like the A7III did. I actually have a video coming out this weekend on the A7IV for video and I go more indepth with things like HDMI for monitors and recorders!
Dan/Sally! Thank you for respond, very helpful. You and Sally so beautiful couple. I love video(s). The colour of videos are beautiful! Everytime I watch your Video, I run off and show my wife your Video quality/colour. We love you guys
How would it work for astrophotography given the high megapixels? Or is this a non issue? Everyone so far has said it works great in “low light” but thats not astro low light.
I'll be doing a separate video deep diving into video but I honestly rarely show rolling shutter tests unless the camera is absolutely horrible or absolutely amazing. Small differences to me don't matter much...unless the camera is incredible, I'm not going to fast pan so whether the rolling shutter is 15 degrees or 20 seems somewhat less important to me...you'll see it either way. But yes, large resolution typically means slower read speeds so more rolling shutter...the exception being stacked cmos or some other high speed sensor readout tech
Is this too much camera for it to be my first photography camera? I'm looking at it like an investment, but I know the SonyZE10 is a good hybrid beginner camera.
So it's not too much camera but certainly it's a camera that is good enough to be used in professional applications. But it's hard to call it an investment if it's your first camera and you probably won't be running a business making $$$ with it just yet. Obviously the resale values of cameras plummet pretty quickly
Hi guys very fun video thank you. Some youtubers have compared and said that they do (not) see any more detail/sharpness compared to the 24MP A7III, which they found that interesting. What can you say about that? And the color science in this camera has improved compared to what, the A7III or something else? And this camera is always loud and doesn't have a silent mode to change to??? Thanks.
Interesting. I don't have the A7III anymore (sold it a few months ago) so I'll have to see if I can test but it had more detail than the 20MP Canon R6. I do have a 24MP Nikon Z6II so I'll test that too. The color science has improved from the A7III...I believe it is the same as the Sony A1. The camera does have a silent mode but ever camera (other than the Sony A9, A1, and Canon R3) use standard sensors so the readout speeds are slow thus shooting electronic/silent shutter can show rolling shutter with moving subjects or banding in artificial lighting so not always usable
@@learningcameras thank you! That’s what i wanted to hear. That alone is enough to get the 7iv vs the 7R4
Late to the comment party on this one, but I have to say, I just picked up an a7iv and I love the crop. As a solo event shooter, that extra reach in 4k60 and the apsc crop mode, in general, comes in clutch. Much more versatile than the a7siii. 👍🏽
I wonder how the 1080 60p in full frame looks like. The a7SIII looks just as clean as the 4k.
Stay tuned...doing a video centered breakdown next so I'll have the ability for those details
@@learningcameras really interested in that Dan - my D750 does really nice 1080 maybe because there is no 4K. Im happy with good quality HD with sharp lenses for social media.
Really thats very helpful - have you used 10 bit 1080 on the A7S3.
Same here. I really want to see how its 1080p performs, especially 60 and 120 fps.
Is the sony AIV 1080 10 bit or 8
Both of you did a wonderful job reviewing this. Thanks!
Means so much!
Love the sensor shutter, auto human/animal eye focus and breathing compensation; just preordered one. The only thing I wish to keep is the flip screen, will keep my A7R4 just for that.
So which is preferred the A7R4 or the A74? They similar in cost. I’m debating between the two.
@@Oakcitymedia the R4 is a high resolution stills only camera, while the A74 is a good hybrid camera
I'd love to see that comparison of the new a7iv color science to the R6 mentioned at 8:32, what color profiles and software was used etc.
This is the review I’ve been waiting for!! Thank you so much Dan!! Awesome
Thanks John!
One other negative they didn’t mention is the rolling shutter!! 😥
@@EduarFilms Definitely feels like a Canon move! With the A1 processor this should be possible. I would take overheating seeing as how most people aren't doing long takes with slow motion.
Yeah it is why I won't get this camera.
I hope you drop a comparisons video against the A7R4 and the A9II. Would be extremely helpful.
Every new camera is amazing… my anxiety as a photographer is so high right now.
@@learningcameras Is it true it takes 4 sec to close after power-off?? If true, doesn't that hamper quick lens changes to get a shot?
@@mem5922 4 seconds sounds about right but usually it takes me way longer to get the lens out of my bag or even take the rear cap off so 4 seconds wouldn't bother me. Shut camera off, get lens, take back cap off, remove lens, attach new lens
I’m definitely picking up this camera guys I appreciate the review y’all are awesome
I'm debating on this vs the A7RIV, pricing is pretty close on the two. I'm more of stills shooter but definitely want to start doing more video.
I had the same issue, but the balance tipped towards the a7 IV because of the complete rotating screen
The 33MP sensor is 17% larger in each direction. This is a big deal, especially given all the sharp lenses available now.
I thought it's still a full frame sized sensor. they just placed more pixels on the same sized sensor.
That's not how it works 🤣🤣
its the same 36x24mm, but with more pixels now.
Why Sony? If it wasn’t for the cropped 4k 60 I would have preordered it already to pair with my A7R4. I also wished they just put two of the CF express cards and addressed the rolling shutter. This kinda of sucks for us hybrid shooters.
They crippled it on purpose. Dirty move by Sony. Just make the camera that people want.
That 5-6 fps burst for uncompressed raw is pretty pathetic too.
@@kifley19 So you want Sony to add another $500 U.S. dollars to the already $2,500 price tag? You all are basically wanting Sony too sell their A1 at $2,500 which they are not going to do
Thanks guys for all the info, advice, and opinion…. While I’m a long way off from owning one yet, I appreciate the opportunity to learn from you!! 😊
I think sony will give from firmware updates for 4k60p full frame.
They better do that. Even if it was 8bit only. Better than no 4k ff 60fps
I agree, I think they’re going to in like 6-12 months so people tend to go towards the Siii if they REALLY want video quality

@@mem5922 I’m pretty much all gimbal all the time.
Might be my first Sony Body as a Nikon User - mostly photo , would be nice to get into video - for all you get $2500 is cheap 👀
Dan, those shots of the R8 were straight badass! You guys are stupid talented.
Means so much Ben!!!
Must say, amazing thumbnail for this video, congrats on all your work!

One of the best review I have seen, and I honestly have seen more than 15 videos. LOVE IT & SUB to you today.
Really appreciate that!!!
I'm pretty sure I'm going to preorder this camera today, but I'm not going to lie, the buffer issue is concerning to me. And for some reason, that doesn't seem like a firmware update will fix it.

Nice vid Dan and Sally!

From a video perspective I definitely felt like the 4K 60fps got gypped, however image quality looked amazing.
Serious Triss Merigold vibes... Love it!
What about the 4K crop and the rolling shutter. I think that this camera will be a best seller for sure, but it’s far from perfect.
I shoot weddings and I crop a lot some times I guess those 33mp are very welcome.
Great review Dan. I'm also a bit disappointed about the 4k 60p not being full frame.. do you think that it could be possible to add a new option of 4K 60p full frame with line skipping via future firmware update?
I'm with you and I certainly hope they can add it in. It's literally the only thing that made this camera not perfect for me
@@learningcameras Same here.. and looking at the Canon R6 photo and video capabilities I find it's a really strange decision from Sony..
Great review, as usual always on point, thank you both.
I do mostly photography (a7iii) so the bump in resolution is what I need. I was thinking of buying an a7riii for pictures.📷📷📷📷📷🔦
Awesome review both in videographer and photographers point of view. Thank you.
Thanks so much Pia!
Thanks Lee.
A7R iv or the new A7 iv? That is the question. I have the budget, but which is the best camera for the money?
So which camera you end up buying?
I am facing same issue right now in 2024
So suggest me which one I should pick?
4k60 crop is a deal breaker. Damn it.
Got one in June , love it ❤
great reviews, I am still on the Panasonic GH5 and want to upgrade to a Sony Full frame.
@@learningcameras Thanks! I took a pass on the R5 after renting it a few times. It is quiet, but lacking in other areas for me.
How’s the 4k / 60p s35 sharpness compared to the a7siii 4k/60p?
I assume the A74 is sharper at 4k/24p because of oversampling?
Not even close specially on how much the sony slows down in uncompressed
Better lcd on the R6
Less rolling shutter on the R6 easily
Better animal eye AF with the R6
Much bigger buffer in the R6.
4k60p full frame vs the crop with the Sony
And if the A1 is an indication, the R6 has more accurate eye AF.
The Canon can focus at lower light levels as well.
Less rolling shutter for photos too.
So tell me again how is the sony superior as your boldly claim???
@@shaolin95 it makes his wife happy!
Great vid! I just need to know 2 things before doing my move:
Does this camera has AA filter like the entire a7 series? And is the shutter life spected like the a7 series too? (200k) or 500k like the others? Thank you!
Would be nice, if there is some kind of AA filter, as all the R-series camera have major problems with heavy moiré. I shoot a lot of product stuff, and it is crazy how much additional work in post is nessacceary to get high quality images without moiré. It's not just a slider... .
@@Benjamin_Jehne answering my first question, the answer is yes, this new a7iv has AA filter, but I don’t how much is the shutter life
Pick it up as my first Sony camera?

I'm really curious how can I use this in my future pipelines ;D
Many thanks!
Sony nailed everything on this camera. And 100% - I can truly say the colors coming out of the new Sony's is superior to Canon and Fuji colors, especially for colored skin.
You guys KILLL the review though! So awesome!
Sony colors will never be superior to canon or fuji .. wild imagination
Cheers
Not for me with only 3.7Mp EVF. I am used to 5.8Mp EVF so I will not go back, but forward to 9.5+Mp EVF !
Im a Nikon hybrid shooter - I also would like full frame 4K 50p. The Z6II and A74 don't have it - so Im left with the R6 - but the R6 doesn't have custom video settings.

My biggest issues with all my Sony camera so far (a7ii, a7iii, & a7Riii) is the shutter release button. Mine have worn out to the point of having to be serviced. How's the shutter button feel compared to the previous models?
That's a good point. I like my G9 where I barely have to touch it and it shoots.
We print 20x30 pretty often but definitely fewer people are printing these days. Absolutely!!! Thanks so much
Hi Dan, I am doubting between the Canon R6 and Sony a7IV.
Thanks for yoru review very nice video and camera
They should do something like 2k 60 at least or maybe even 2k 120. Idk if there is but it's still better than 1080
Great video Watson..
Thanks so much!
How about the buffer when shooting only Raw? Does it clear fast for switching quickly from photo to video for hybrid shooting?
It still gets slow pretty quickly...I think I got about 35 images tops on fast UHSII SD cards. If you use CFexpress though you can shoot like 800 images before filling the buffer
@@learningcameras using CFexpress A car 800 or until fill cards means only jpeg and lossy compressed Raw???
@@pematamang9268 You can shoot 400+ images straight in compressed RAW with a CFexpress A card
@@learningcameras Is that write to both slots or just the CFexpress?
Just suppose AR 7IV and A7IV have same megapixels.
Now which model i should buy in 2024?
I am so confuse in both models
The only hardware upgrade with the A7RIV is the screen and viewfinder resolution. Otherwise the A7IV is actually a better camera in most ways
You should create online programmes for learning Photo and videography. I'd love to shoot like you
What settings/ lens are you using in this video?
just like Dan, one of the main gripes i have with the a7iv is the 4k60 cropped, not that i use it a lot, but when i do, it would just be so annoying to deal with the huge change in aspect ratio. also the other downside of higher resolution is that it cannot shoot any more than 10fps, when the R6 can go up to 20; had they kept a 24mp sensor, sony could probably have bumped it to at least 15fps if not match the 20fps of the canon.
Love this review however you can change your shutter type to electronic (silent shooting) as you have mentioned that the mechanical shutter is loud.
Supposed to be the end of this year but not sure if there will be shortage issues
I have the a7s3 and two a6400 for video and two a7r3 for photography. Would you upgrade the a7r3 to this camera?
Thanks for an awesome review!
Appreciate you watching!!!
@@learningcameras appreciate the reply!
Hi anything on the silent shooting? any improvement? Still has banding? thanks
Yep, not a stacked cmos sensor so still slower readouts which could have issues with electronic silent shutter
How good this compared with S5, I got S5 with Kit and Lumix 85mm 1.8, for 2K$.
The A7IV has much better AF for sure. I'm a fan of the S5 but that's the biggest weakness
Thanks a lot for this exhaustive review. Do you think that the autofocus performance is superior to that of the A 7 R IV? Many thanks and best regards.
Thanks! It is a slight improvement to the RIV but the RIV was already amazing
DO i need it NO, Do i plan on getting it YES.
SAME 😂
Hahaha
Rolling shutter is apparently the other big negative for this camera they forgot to mention!
@@learningcameras Thank you so much for your input.
