About hammocks: Me and my sister had guinea-pigs in the 1980's when large sweatshirts were in fashion. Our guinea-pigs quickly hidd underneath our shirts, during lap-time. If we'd stand up or even walk around (Always with our hards underneath the guinea-pig, for safety!) with the guinea-pig close to our tummy, it must have been pretty much the same as a guinea-pig hammock! And a hydie... And "human hot-water-bottle" next to them. ;) We always hoped that they did that because they enjoyed it, not just to hide from "mean children". ;) Seeing your piggies in their hammocks reassures me! ♡
Currently writing a guinea pig care book so I can follow it when I need it. I'll definately be taking notes from this video. Thank you! (P.S: Monica and Rachel - my guinea pigs - say hi!)
All my pigs love brown packing paper. I crumple it up sometimes to make a warren of crumpled bits for them to burrow through, and also use it as cover for sections of the pen, which gets nibbled on, and eventually winds up as crumples and I put a new piece up. It comes in packages to my house and also for when I haven't gotten it for free, I bought a massive roll of it from Amazon for about 20 dollars. I've been keeping pigs for years, taking them in from others who dont want them anymore, and aside from, sadly, the health and diet neglect by people, one of the biggest issues I see is piggies kept in a place where there are not enough hiding places. For example, recently I took in a pair of boys, Zeus and Gatsby. They stuck to their huts, and when moving around if they had to, they hugged the bottom of the pen. I put in a piece of packing paper a few feet wide... resting across a little Snak Shack to hold it up. I am not exaggerating, it was one of the most joyful things I've ever seen. For probably five minutes non stop they made a circle, scurrying under the paper, emerging, leaping with popcorns over and over and running around the other side to do it again. The other thing to get your pigs is a bell, so they can call you when they need something. Here is a video of Kirito-San , my first rescue boar, ringing for lunch, from many years ago. He was the first, and all the others have used bells in the time since. The new arrivals learn from the others. You wouldn't believe how much their little personalities light up when they realize you are listening. ua-cam.com/video/N_81pWO1vCQ/v-deo.html
To avoid having to store guinea-pig-houses, I can recommend reusing cardboard boxes (that foods or other things have come in) as guinea-pig-houses, and recycle / throw them away (depending on condition) after "use". This way you can constantly get different guinea-pig-houses, without the storage issue! If I don't have any box the right size, I usually get one that my supermarket-staff are about to throw away anyway. I just ask nicely, and they always say yes... (This is in Stockholm. I don't know if it's possible in Britten, as well.)
Thank you sooo much for these kind of guinea pig videos I just got guinea pigs 2 month ago and are still learning about fun and new things for them and your videos are really helpful ❤️
I only half agree guinea-pigs don't create their own tunnels! When we would let our guinea-pigs run around in high grass or a brush with it's old leaves between it's branches, they'd create a system of tunnel-like paths, that could make them quite difficult to catch to get back inside, if they had got a few hours to "work on it"... ;) Our guinea-pigs dreaded empty surfaces like empty floors and the lawn. We would never need to worry about them trying to run away, if left in a (not to tidy) brush surrounded by lawn. (We did worry about the getting harmed or eaten by neighbours cats or, our guinea-pigs greatest fear, birds, though.)
hi!! i am a new guinea pig owner, and i wanted to share an invention that has made life much easier and happier for me and my pigs. it’s called the piggy pocket, and it’s basically a large envelope made out of fleece! whenever i want to hold one of my pigs, i just stick them inside and they are happy as clams! they can burrow and nest in it, and i think that makes them feel a lot more comfortable. anyway, it’s just an idea! also, thanks for the hay in the box idea. i just barely put out a box filled with hay for my pigs, and they already love it. thank you!!
This or something similar really helps. Many pigs who clearly enjoy being held and petted still do not like being picked up. So picking up the thing they are in and putting that in your lap can eliminate that transition. Mine have their little hides in the pen on cafeteria trays with absorbent material, so I can pick up a tray when a pig is in a hut and take that to the chair. As a bonus the trays are easily changed and wind up getting much of the mess, so I get an extra day or two between pen cleans.
Great video👍🏻this will be perfect to new guinea pig owners. My piggies are strange 🤣 they use their beds as toilets, not for a nap and they are not interested in hay box. They are fine with litter tray as they just eat hay from it. They won't hang out in hay.
Thank you for the recommendations, these are now added to the ever growing treat list for the piggies! Can anyone advise on cage space? I have two 4x2 c&c’s in a L shape it’s all open and has 3 piggies in. I want more piggies and I’ve calculated the square feet which states it would be enough for 5 but i’d like opinions on how many piggies could live in this size cage. 😊 Thanks
I JUST GOT MY PIGGIES TODAY!! If maybe you could comment or make a video even! Ab what to expect for the first few days!?!? I just don’t know what to expect! 😂😝
Is it possible to grow grass as a guinea-pig treat on the windowsill in the winter? Do you or anyone know? Which type of grass-seed is good? Any other tips on how to do this successfully? Is there any other guinea-pig treat you could grow indoors in the winter?
I am planning to get 2 guinea pigs! and this will be my first time getting them and let me tell u your videos have helped me understand guinea pigs a 1000 times more!! also, does anyone have any name ideas?? please comment if you do!!
your pigs are so cute!!! 🙂Phoebe is adorable!!! 😁were do you recommend getting the hammock stands and the hammocks them selves? ❤ because i think my piggies would love them❤.
Do guinea-pigs eat hay even if they get as much fresh grass as they can eat? ...I wondered for many years. Our guinea-pigs loved fresh grass as much as Iceberg lettuce (their absolute favourite food) and of course we gave it to them in the summer part of the year, when there were any (in Sweden, Stockholm area). They got hay as well, of course. We didn't see any of them actually having any, when they had fresh grass as a choice, and it wasn't easy to tell if there was any less hay in their case, or if they had just flattened it down. Do you (or someone else) know if guinea-pigs actually eat any hay, when they have as much fresh grass as they'd like?
Hi.. do you have any idea to stop guinea pig from going under the liner? My cage not cc cage grid. Its similar like yours but smaller that’s why i cant clip the liner at the grid. My GP love to going under it and make the cage totally mess
Can I ask for measurements for your free standing hammock please? I'm going to try and make one myself but my piggies are only babies at the minute so unsure on sizing! A video would be amazing 🙂 Thanks
I have a question, can you make your own huts for Guinea pigs out of card board because I used to do it for my pet bunny and it worked wonders just wondering if I could do it with Guinea pigs too?
It could be that they just aren't used to climbing in, or the hammock is a bit high maybe? Mine like their bums to just touch the floor when they are in them. Some piggies may not use them if they don't feel confident getting in, Pedro can get in but usually hangs out underneath - I think because his front legs are very short bless him!!
@@SqueakDreams Thanks so much for the feedback! Ours actually is a bit high, so we’ll look at getting a larger one that comes down closer to the bottom and see if that makes a difference. Thanks again! Love all the valuable info you put out there! It’s been so helpful in caring for our piggies!
If you only have one Guinea pig is it ok? Because I do have one Guinea pig and she is doing really well (I play and snuggle her frequently and take care of her) do i absolutely need a second one?
this is a year late, but i used to only have one pig that i gave a lot of attention to as well, but once i got her a friend i noticed a drastic difference in her behavior. she showed a lot more of her personality and became more active. they truly are happier with other piggies and i would get another if i were you
@@SqueakDreams any particular brand? Yours looks super green and fresh! I've ordered 2nd cut Timothy from small pet select yesterday hoping that'll be better than the batches we tried from newhay & pets at home 😔 my husband and I are new piggie parents and we've adopted 2x 3yo bonded males via RSPCA recently and we're testing the waters with their likes/dislikes while introducing fresh veggies feeds twice a day so they get used to us & to a new routing. But hay has been really hit or miss, most of the time they end up sleeping in it so now I've also ordered a hanging solid wood hay feeder and hoping it'll entice them more :D thank you so much for reading and your response! hey! i was wondering if you could give me some advice? one of my guinea pigs having been acting a bit strange for my liking recently. im honestly clueless on what "wheezing" sounds like in a guinea pig. however, thats probally the best way i can describe it. she only ever does it if im picking her up, or she is in another place other then her cage. for example, today she did it around 7 times in around 15 minutes, whilst sitting on my couch. yet, they were the only times today (but this has been occuring for a couple weeks) i understand completely if you cannot help, but any response might make me feel less anxious because i might know what to do about it. luv your piggies, theyre adorbs! hope ur ok, and that pedro and lyra are doing better
You can make them with supplies from DIY shops and amazon, or you can buy pre measured, cut and scored ones. The latter will be more expensive though and they are easy to build once you know how, there's lots of tutorials online 😊
