This is one of those videos that I don't think the average person can quite appreciate. Complete removal of an entire drivetrain almost in less than 40 minutes with zero cussing. Unreal.
At least he has a lift and plenty of room getting to bolts. I did an Audi A4 Quattro 1.8t on jack stands converting it from an automatic to a manual. The auto is a difficult beast to get out since the AWD is build into it so no separate transfer case. Very wide transmission you have to pivot sideways to get out because of the front CV axle flanges that sick out.
I'm pulling on tomorrow laying on my back. The video was a great briefing just to get a rundown and refresh my memory of everything I have to do. Don't tell my boss it only took you 30 minutes 🤣
😂 took me 2hrs I ended up getting the bolts red hot with a torch and the finally came loose! Next trans job I think I will get it removed within 1 hr being I know every nut and bolt size and the procedure to remove it quickly.
I just take the bracket loose on the t. case instead of cutting the tie downs. This must be a 2500 series going by the exhaust setup. A bit easier on a 1500. The PB really does help. Spray before you start and by the time you get to the exhaust bolts they should be good. You'll lose some time if have the rear shaft that has to be wrenched out. Good job man.
Awesome video. Gonna drop one and change the rear main seal for a guy at work. Wont have the convenience of a lift but I should be able to get it down in a decent amount of time
@@charlieg1731 took me and a friend 6 hours to do it. We ended up unbolting the transmission and just sliding it back and changing the seal like that vs bringing the transmission down. It would’ve only taken about 4 hours but we had trouble with small stuff like the dipstick tube prob took an hour just to get it back in because it was bent
I have 2015 lt 4x4 chevy suburban and the 4x4 is on and because of that my transmission heats 🥵 up and I don't know if there is away to fix the 4x4 without changing the transmission.
I’ve done a number of swaps in my younger years from the ground by myself but too out of shape for that now. I’m gonna spray penetrating oil on everything I can reach a couple times before I bring it in. It’s still drivable and I have the same truck YMM. About what does a swap cost these days? If I buy the transmission
I called shops and many said if we dont supply the parts we wont touch it, the only place that said they would reflash it was the dealership.. I guess these independent shops want to make that $$ on that parts markup. Shops used to do it but didnt warranty the part just the labor ..guess those days are gone.
My 2015 Chevy Tahoe LTZ transmission went yesterday and I don’t have money to fix it and I’m in Connecticut both of my Tahoe’s down one has sensor problem maybe and another the transmission
Do you have the video of this trans going back in? I have to replace the rear main seal and upgrade the torque converter. Want to do it myself. This video is awesome for removal, I'd like to see you throw it back in there too!
@@ltstransmissionhowto5158 Any idea on why my torque converter won't spin to get to the 3x converter nuts? Will barely move with the prybar on the teeth method.
Well it really sounds like the converter is pushing on the pump gears. If the converter wasn’t all the way back in the transmission it could’ve messed the pump up
That could be cured if he improved his order of operations a little. He should have removed the Y pipe first. Also could have removed the trans cooler lines before trying to snake through them to get one of the bellhousing bolts out.
So I was told if I have metal in my pan I need to rebuild I had none shoud I check something else or install a new torque converter. Have the shutter and was shifting slow at points
It’s usually real fine metal on those. You can try just a converter. Usually a valve in the pump causes problems too. And the 1-2-3-4 3-5-Rev drum goes bad a lot
Thanks for the great guide. In doing research it seems the JMBX converters are the biggest point of failure for the 6L90e transmission. I have a '17 2500hd 6.0 with 47,000 miles that I rely heavily upon for plowing snow. I've attained a heavy duty converter from B&I and I'm going to swap it out before this coming plow season.
Yeah. The converter suck. I’ve had trouble with some hd converters too. I’ve heard of some shops tuning the transmissions to make the converters not lock up until 4-5 gear. They say it helps. Factory tune the converters lock up in 2nd gear.
Is there any parts or materials I would need prior to replacing this transmission so that way I can purchase them before because I have no support system here, NONE.
The exhaust manifold to Y-pipe gaskets, one of the gaskets looks like a ring, the other looks like a cone. maybe just a transfer case gasket as well they rip apart some times. And fluid, everything else and the nuts and bolts are reusable.
Are you only replacing the torque converter? Does the transmission oil cooler need to be replaced also? I have one with a noise coming from the torque converter area and am installing a low mile replacement transmission. I wish I'd watched your video before buying the replacement transmission. Maybe I would only be replacing the torque converter area and not have to deal with the reprogramming.
Great Video! My sons flexplate is rattling and he wants to replace it. My neighbor is like we can do it just take the top bolts out and get some threaded rod and slide it out a few inches and we can do it with out removing the whole 6L90 ....I would love your thoughts on if you thought that possible.
Is the 6l90 better than the 6l80 my 6l80 is burnt on my 2012 silverado z71 and I'm going to buy a brand new Tran but if I can put a 6l90 directly and if it holds better I'm doing it is it a direct fit? Is this an upgrade like the 4l60 to 4l80 just in newer trucks??
I believe the 6L90 is a little longer. Don’t quote me on that because I’m not 100% sure. The issues that the 6L80 has the 6L90 has too. If you could get the 6L80 with a few of the upgrades it would be great. The 1-2-3-4 and 3-5-rev drum has a weak spot. An upgraded one has a better weld. There’s a piston that tends to crack, sonnax has and updated one. Also try to get a HD converter. They have a thicker cutch and a thicker backing plate. The 6L90 is not as big a difference from the 6L80 that 4L60 is from the 4L80
