  • Don Carr presents the FreqOut feedback-creation pedal. Use it to coax natural-sounding feedback from your guitar amplifier at any volume, with or without distortion. You even have control over the harmonics that are highlighted, leading to amazingly musical results. The sound is full and huge, just like a howling guitar amplifier. The footswitch can be set for momentary or latching operation, and you can choose whether your dry signal is mixed with the effect.

    I just got mine - and I can say it really, really works! Perfect for environments where you're not in front of an amp, or in the ideal position, such as recording (even DI-ed, on headphones) or live with in-ears. All around great new thing!

    FINALLY someone playing a Stratocaster and a real Fender amp! All these other dudes were playing into some computer set up, this one dude even said "since no one uses amps anymore"..I shut that one off right away when he said that.

    What a cool little pedal, wonder how well this works in different positions in loop or input.

    • @sweetwater

      Cai Durkan-Digitech recommends placing the Freqout directly after your guitar for the most consistent read on the notes you're playing. That being said, the spirit of experimentation is alive and well. I could see putting a compressor before the Freqout or possibly a drive pedal. A wah or modulation pedal before it might make it really "freqout!" (Pardon the pun, it was too easy!)
      Thanks! Don Carr

    If anyone wants to get this effect with just an EQ pedal, here's a trick... Get a couple Y splitters, run one output to amp and the other back into your EQ pedal. Kick on your EQ pedal for the effect. Adjust sliders for various noises. It's a poor man's FreQout. I'm sure others have done this, but I messed around one day and found this trick. It's not exactly the same tones as this pedal, but its own thing. Different eqs have different sounds.

    • @sivishankari
      @sivishankari 5 років тому

      You would need to have a stereo in/out EQ? Does that exist

    • @LeviBulger
      @LeviBulger 5 років тому +1

      @@sivishankari
      Sorry good point. I will have to edit my post. I failed to mention that you actually need two y splitters. One of each: male to 2 female and female to 2 male. Your guitar input goes into the 2 female to male, pedal output to two male. The latter has one going to amp and one going back to the other female input of the y splitter that's in the pedal's input. Depending on where your sliders are, you'll have different oscillation tones. The FreQout is obviously very cool and easier, but some EQ pedals have incredible sounding feedback/oscillations. My favorite are Boss and EHX tube eq. Try it out sometime!

    Awesome review, So would you say that this pedal is better than having the Fernandez Sustainiac pickups in your guitar ? I have the sustainiac pickup in one of my guitars, but I am really interested in this pedal. cheers. Ed

    • @sweetwater
      @sweetwater  4 місяці тому

      Hi, chopshop777! Thanks for your message, hope all is well your way. The freqout and the infinite Sample from TC have more options than the Fernandez Sustainer, however they are not as immediate being pedals rather than built into the guitar. Are the pedals more up to date? More accessible? Wider control options? All yes… “Better” is subjective.

    Wow...7 years later 😄 Pretty cool. I'm curious how fast you can set the attack. If you can get it to react straight away it would be interesting to play with the whistle effect with no dry signal.

  • @stubhead

    As always, there's a few people saying it's nothing new, same old thing, new graphics. And they're wrong about it. Sometimes... I mean, EH's "Ravish" sitar imitator can itself be imitated if you have a delay that goes to ZERO. It has to go all the way... set it at around 3ms to 5ms, with both the repeats and volume in the low 90's.... insty-sitar. But I've gotten new Digitech, TC Electronics and particulary Pigtronix, and the PREAMP sections are a huge improvement in sound over old Bosses and such. I don't know WHAT it is, but they've ALL conquered that transistor radio tone. This thing is using the synthesis idea of their band creator, but they match the NOTE you play. Or look at EH's wack-o organ pedals... yes you can get the same sound by plugging four other pedals into each other and going psycho with the knobs. But you don't have to.

    Hi Don, what would be the best place in the pearl chain to place this pedal? Great review!

    • @sweetwater
      @sweetwater  5 місяців тому

      Hi peerkuusch. The best way to make the results more predictable is to make the pedal first in the chain, with the possible exception being a transparent compressor. -_Daniel_

    Nice, but I'd prefer it to have a control pedal where I can control the intensity of the feedback with my foot. Like turning the guitar towards the amp and away from it. The sound is not really natural.

    • @Delaystomper
      @Delaystomper 3 роки тому +1

      You can by adding a mod to the intensity knob . Expression pedal to added expression jack wired to the intensity knob . Control it with expession pedal

    Does Anyone Know Where The Pedal Should Go? Before or After Distortion? Before or After Modulations? etc.

    • @TLguitar
      @TLguitar 6 років тому +1

      Aidan Romero I tend to believe placing it before distortion or otherwise is the more logical choice, as true guitar feedback happens when the loud output from the speakers causes your strings to vibrate in sympathetic resonance; the electric signal generated from that new vibration then of course goes through the same chain of processing (pedals, amp-based distortion and effects) as all of your guitar playing goes through. Thus, I believe having a clean, "from the strings" harmonic feedback being placed behind any sort of effect or distortion is the way to go.

    I'd be interested to hear how it works with chords (though I think you did a little in your reverb-y part of the demo). Does it pick the strongest note out of the chord? I saw a demo of the old Boss DF-2 and the guy switched it in and out while a chord was fading out, and it picked a different harmonic each time - interesting effect. I wonder if this can do that.
    PS: I'm a keyboard player and want to try this on my Clavinet!

    Question: What happens when you hit the footswitch and you’re not playing, i.e., there’s no input signal present?

    • @sweetwater
      @sweetwater  Місяць тому

      Hi, thanks for your interest! Good question - I haven’t tried doing this myself, but in theory, you probably wouldn’t hear much, if anything. Since the FreqOut relies on an incoming guitar signal to generate the simulated feedback, it’s not likely to have any noticeable output without that signal. I’ll have to give it a shot next time I get my hands on one of these!
      I hope this helps a bit, though - feel free to contact me directly with any further questions, and thanks again!

      It is well controlled already! Part of the fun of feedback is it is not a flat tone it is slightly moving up and down.. a little chaotic. It is supposed to be like that.

    Before or after drive pedals?

    • @sweetwater
      @sweetwater  5 років тому

      Hi, Anthony. It's always good to experiment with both, but typically that type of pedal will go first. It will work best if it's getting a clean signal off the guitar.

    Before or after compressor pedal??

    • @sweetwater
      @sweetwater  4 роки тому +1

      Hi, Zachary! Thanks for your question. FreqOut is one of my favorite pedals. I use it in effects loops, in front of amps, even into a direct box. Where you place the compressor is more of a feel decision than anything. Placed before there could be more bloom or snap to the transient, placed after could even out and extend the tail of the "feedback". All dependent on how you set the controls. Not knowing anything about what your goal is sonically I can't really answer more specifically. Please contact me direct and we can get into a deeper conversation.
