UA-cam is an amazing resource for learning all sorts of skills and getting ideas for how yo DIY things. That being said, it's pretty clear that some of the ideas presented can fall pretty short of the mark on robustness, safety, longevity, looks, or just generally accepted best practice. That's why I like your channel, pointing out to people just getting into doing something new, what will work and what probably won't, and why.
This is DIY project and he save a ton of money. Yes, professionals would of done a better job, but breaking the bank. At the end of the day what matters is the homeowner is happy.
I've done a lot of home improvements learning stuff on UA-cam University and I quickly learned to "change the channel" the instant some guy says, "I've never done this before but we'll see if it works" lol.
These videos never get old, especially now that I'm trying to install a similar length of fence with gate. I have one high spot that I'm trying to run string to use as a level line.b
It seems like he's new to the jack of all master if none game. I feel like that video was for a weekend warrior on a serious budget with very little friends, cash and time. It'll last 5-10 years depending on location; wind and weather. It definitely serves its purpose and I definitely agree, he should've raised the panels or cut them if necessary to make them even across the top. He could've even cut them while they're standing with the circular saw or multi tool. Someone could always buy metal fence bracing at a big box and tie everything together. That would lengthen the life span of thw fence. Honestly he can pull a few screws and lag bolts and trim it all down in an hour or so. He wouldn't need many tools. Doing this type of work all my life, I've learned to be constructive in my criticism of other people's work. I give him credit for doing the work In the first place. Even a few sections of fence by yourself is far from easy. We all know it's easy to say that something could be better or done differently. I'd almost guarantee the majority of people that critiqued his work have never installed any type of fence. Either way you do great work and I enjoy your videos. I've used several times to brush up on my knowledge. I appreciate it and have a good one 👍
My wife would be pissed if one side was taller than the other. 😂😂 also, not matching hinges drop set is okay if no one will ever see it. But harder to do and looks worse
Hi Joe, I will be building a gate using a panel that I will remove from the fence. I don't know anything about fence but after paying so much money for my fence and still not happy with it. I'm going to give it a try will using some of your advice.
I've used the foam for a mailbox post and a 32' bridge to anchor the bridge supports. That bridge handles a 700 pound ATV and it doesn't move. Neither does the mailbox.
Good lord! Is this guy supposed to be a fence guy? 🤔 hell maybe I should start a UA-cam channel and start teaching chemical engineering...maybe rocket science or brain surgery...No Joe you are correct, the expanding foam has the same result with wood as it does vinyl and metal. Works great for the first 10 or 12 hours then shrinks away from post.
@@firemech911 he's a handyman at best. It takes very few carpentry skill to build a decent wood fence. I framed houses for a while before getting into the fence industry. I don't know a single carpenter that would have even thought about using a pre-built fence panel lol
@@csvinylfence6958 let me rephrase that he’s a wood worker he builds tables and cabinets things like that. I’m no carpenter but I wouldn’t waste my time with prebuilt panels unless I built them their a waste of money.
OK the last thing is, it’s bugging me. If both letters are locked, you have to walk from one and then back to the house to the backside of that gate to open the second latch. Same the other way around. If you open one side of the gate, he still can’t get through because the other one is locked.
I watch the original and I would not use that foam method. It’s a gimmick and you can clearly see the fence move easily when he screws the panel to the post. No doubt he’ll be doing another video showing how the foam method doesn’t work.
Wow. That looks like hot garbage. I would actually like the raised gate panel portion, IF the rest of the fence was level to itself, and just the gate portion was raised up. That could be fairly stylish if done right with some design forethought. As it is, I would describe this fence as "drunk."
2:53 @Joe Everest I tried EVERY SINGLE foam/expanding foam product out there on market to see which “is better” or “if works at all”; when my Dad/Mom had a fence post that completely rotted out at bottom, as when rained….would sit in 1-3” of water b/c of yard grade. IMO and after fair amount of money, lots of time, and materials…..here’s my conclusions: Cement is way to go, and the “ONLY F9AM PRODUCT THAT WORKS OK” is the PostLoc Brand! The 2 part foam that comes in containers (not bags) and add A to B, and mix a small amount as it kicks rather fast and pour in hole, and liked using 2 kits are the large commercial kit. Also found that trimming foam isn’t so good, ESPECIALLY the other brands as porous and will allow water to flow through holes and shrinks/collapses the foam in 1-2 days and end up right where started….so NO TRIMMING FOAM, not even PostLoc as got better results this way. My fav way that holds 100% of time: Rapid Set Concrete Mix (link here at depot: thd.co/3TjTumD ) and the Rapid Set Concrete Pharmacy - Set Control Retarder (link at depot: thd.co/3EErHJS ) AND IF IN SOUTHERN part of USA in HOT HUMID WEATHER….USE THE SET CONTROL ¹ , 1-4 SACHES depending on mix amount b/c this brand KICKS SUPER QUICK and trust me, if wanna have an easy time especially if first timer….by time finish mixing in mixer or wheelbarrow; if no set control it will kick before done mixing and not gonna have fun day, lol. If quick and worked w/ before etc…don’t need to use and by time set 2nd &/or 3rd post, the FIRST POST WILL BE READY TO HANG PICKETS. Why like using this brand; as know by time work way around yard/job, know 100% that can start setting rails and pickets and everything will hold and not move and have a great install that will last; well, least ‘Crete will and won’t have to worry about it. Can even do a hybrid set/dry set (pour litre in hole and pour enough mix inside and mix w/ spike/rod/handle/etc and pack at top and will also set well (if doing this; I WOULDNT ADD SET CONTROL AT ALL). So, as like the Rapid Set Brand, it is NOT cheap, usually it is DOUBLE the price of quikrete products, but for me, easy to acquire/find and works great and very confident that when used, not waiting 2 hrs to start setting rails etc….and when job over; know that if happen to have call back, won’t be from concrete mix not holding a post, etc…. Cheers✌🏻 Sorry about length of comment, by like you Joe, I get triggered from seeing ppl using the foam products and thinking will work; and if they Happen to work; would love To know secret, as again like you….we’ve done testing and experiments w/ all diff brands/products put in market and only brand that seems to work well, is PostLoc; but still prefer Rapid Set Concrete brand for projects and will only use PostLoc as a temp “fix” till able to get back out to repair or replace the issue. ¹ Rapid Set brand also has Concrete Pharmacy Flow Control saches (like set control) but instead of a retarder, flow control is used to help working/open time before ‘Crete kicks/flashes. Flow control will allow mix to “flow” more like a “self leveler” (best way can explain for beginners/DIYers and has consistency of pancake batter and very warm peanut butter or fridge cold syrup), and again allows mix to be worked a bit longer, flow into cracks and areas that might be difficult to “pack” and will also push water a bit out of form/mold/area pouring the cement mix …..”some water”, not meaning gonna push 1-5 inches out of a hole, keep in mind. Will also add bit more strength to mix, as can use 50% less water when using flow control, making mix stronger.
I could not leave one section of the fence higher than the other. It would drive me crazy having to look at it every day,
No kidding!
The main thing I would have done differently is”leave the old fence alone” 😂
It was better looking than that cheap mess he put up
😂how true

at 4:53 that post seems to be moving a lot when he manhandles the panel - (he had just dumped only half a bag of foam in each hole).

Old fence was fine! He could’ve made a door from 1 of the old 3 sections and reinstalled on old posts. Nothing looked rotten

@JoeEverest I am looking to make a gate for some trash cans. Is it possible to make a 55" gate opening off a 3.5" galvanized steel (square) post?
You bet! We hang up to 60” gates off of 2-3/8 round steel posts, 40 weight.
That guy didn't do three seconds of homework before making his fence🤣
why cutting it off from the bottom when you could lift it up to the top ,to the right level ?
