@@JoeEverest You didn't catch it during your recording? I was waiting for your reaction when you realized he built it backwards right after his classroom explanation about compression. 😮
I just built a gate following this video. I thought he new what he was talking about, until the point in the video where he said he installed the angle brace backwards. Your comments were spot on. I used the T hinges because there was not enough room on the post for the other hinge. I agree with using the gravity latch. I was dumbfounded why he didn't simply shim the gate to the desired height before attaching the hinges. I learned to check out multiple videos before starting a project. It appears he left the backwards brace in place instead of correcting his mistake.
I appreciate your feedback. But what I would find more helpful is, instead of criticizing someone else's methods, I'd love to watch YOUR video on how to build a fence gate properly. If you have such a video, can you direct me to it? thanks
Absolutely, if you search the term ‘gate’ on my channel page it should pull up a couple. One showing step-by-step on how we build steel framed gates for wood fences.
Love the videos... At first glance I noticed that in his demonstration of the diagonal support goes from the bottom hinge to the top outer corner of the gate. What he built is the opposite. It shows the support going from the top hinge to the bottom outer corner.
To me this is a good enough gate. You know I don't have a million home. This is a little bungalow and I would be just fine with something like this. Too many critics here
People are just picking on the fact that he explained how to do it properly and then proceeded to do it wrong. You don’t need a million dollar house to not want a gate that’ll sag in a year’s time.
I agree. He’s a young guy who’s building up a handyman business and taking on different types of projects. He never claimed to be a professional fence builder. He’s taking his time to show people how to do it themselves and save money. I think it looks fine. Plus, the reason I watched his video is because I paid $1500 for a fence and gate by a professional company and they didn’t put any brace on the gate, which now sags! So all the critics should know that the “pros” don’t necessarily do a better job!
I love the tips with the reveal and the strap hinges. I would never square my stuff off a concrete line but at least he measured corner to corner 🤣 the best part is the fact he explains the brace and does it backwards. I just started my own handyman business and I’m going to build my first gate tomorrow. I’ve built a million doors and hung a million doors I know gates are a bit different but It all looks pretty simple to me. I just wanted these professional tips and tricks before I took it on. I watched his video, then I watched yours. I’m so glad I saw yours pop up right under his 😂
I just built a wood fence gate and a fence and man I wish I had found your channel you could have saved me some grief but still I put it on my channel anyway. My video is some what primitive and I have no teaching skills but I try, I wanted to hire a professional but I am retired and had to choose between a professional built board on board fence and paying the utilities this month. You are welcome to review what I have done although at my age I do not believe I will be able to build another fence in the future. Yes good fences make better neighbors
I thought it was interesting that he went into the details of mounting the brace correctly - compression versus tension. However, when he showed it being installed, it was incorrect.
I watched the video and liked that he explained everything for a beginner. You obviously know more but we could use an explanation of some terms. What's the definition of a reveal, technically speaking?
Interesting how he knew the difference of compression vs tension braces and still did it for tension. This is a problem in our area is handymen doing the fence work to make extra money and do it wrong most likely, instead of a fence professional setup that does it every day
@@johnbode2756 He literally put a clip in the video (that he filmed after the mistake) and included it in the original video because he caught the mistake he made.
This one is from a couple years ago, but our design is still the same. We shot a new video last week, so it should be up in a month or so. ua-cam.com/video/mU7JbrLfj7w/v-deo.html
Wish i could see better, Joe. I like working with my little 6 ft high fence panel & FRONT YARD 22" MINI FENCE to hide planters & ground level solar panel rig.
mr joe help pls i am trying to re build my fence and double gates and i am so confused. I am a 57 year old female really trying hard to understand all this i have a lil money issue and dont have that much to spend is it possible to still make it sturdy on limited funds? hope u can respond thanks in advance - sonya
Is there something wrong with my understanding? I think while he saying using a compression brace not a tension brace, but it seems like what he build is actually a tension brace?
The whole time I watched the original video I was like who actually trusts a concrete guy to lay a square line😂😂😂 I've pumped a lot of mud and id only trust a handful of these guys to build my foundation 😂😂😂
@@JoeEverest I could be wrong. The 8” t hinge from master halco seemed to have a larger pin than the strap hinge from nationwide. I have gone away from strap hinges completely. Like you though we’re trying to convince people to go with steel frame no matter what size the gate is.
My man goes into the importance of the diagonal brace for a solid minute and then proceeds to do it wrong 🤦
I was here to comment the same thing
He was so close 😂
Haha I was looking at that and thinking 🤔..okay am I missing something here? Surely he didn’t just do what he told us not to do…. Sheesh 😂

I appreciate you watching and giving feedback! He absolutely did!
Wait I though he said he wanted the force to push on the bottom hinge and he went and put the slanted 2X4 pulling on the top hinge
He put the diagonal brase backwards after giving an in depth lesson on how to do it right. Some people cannot learn even from themselves.
I mean, he DID lean because the explanation was given AFTER the build

That tip about the gate measurement is sure a valuable bit of advice. Needs to be said more

I like how I found my way down the UA-cam hole into gate building.
I appreciate you watching all the same!
The cross brace is exactly opposite of the drawing. The top of the diagonal support is at the hinge side at the top of the door.
Your face when he used the line on the driveway 😂😂😂
😂🤦♂️
I thought it was interesting that he went into the details of mounting the brace correctly - compression versus tension. However, when he showed it being installed, it was incorrect.
He was on the right track, just missed on the execution!
I watched the video and liked that he explained everything for a beginner. You obviously know more but we could use an explanation of some terms. What's the definition of a reveal, technically speaking?
Great points. What is a reveal? I did not underst6and that part.
it looks like the runners on the gate, are going to rub on the fence post on the gate side?
Interesting how he knew the difference of compression vs tension braces and still did it for tension. This is a problem in our area is handymen doing the fence work to make extra money and do it wrong most likely, instead of a fence professional setup that does it every day
He definitely nailed the pickets on the wrong said and decided to just go with it 😂
I suspect someone pointed out his mistake and inserted the explanation into the video. Unfortunately, he didn't bother to correct his serious mistake.
@@johnbode2756 He literally put a clip in the video (that he filmed after the mistake) and included it in the original video because he caught the mistake he made.
I value your work thank you!
should the railings on the gate match the railings on the fence?
Absolutely
I bought wood for 3:10 pitch 4 ft wide ramp, to building 140 was half the cost of the screws, let alone wood
the angled support is reversed..?
Joe can you please give me a link a video of a correct gate build? Thanks

@@JoeEverest thank you! This is my memorial day build and really needed your help.
The way he said you need to build the support is not the way he hung the gate. Outer end on top down to the hinge😂

Screws or nails for a wood gate/fence?

Is there something wrong with my understanding? I think while he saying using a compression brace not a tension brace, but it seems like what he build is actually a tension brace?
Some tracts have HOA'S and some really picky codes, that gate will not hold up with a self closer, great for a quick check.
Agreed
He put the cross brace going the wrong way. He even explained not to do it that way but he did it anyway!!!

Fence looks good to me
😂
Ha! Just watched this last night!😂
Nice! Thanks for watching and weighing in!
Support brace was placed in the wrong direction!
💯
So wrong. EVERY time I put my brace away from top hinge it sagged. Your bottom hinge doesn't need support. Your top hinge does.
Still hung the gate upside down 😢
Original gate was build the same way probably by the same guy
This is a, Do as I say, not as I do, type of video.
Definitely not a glowing endorsement for his course 😂
Looks like a gate we would of put on our fort in the woods as kids.. just saying
Hinge pin size is most important to me. Strap hinges tend to have smaller pins than t hinges. I absolutely cannot stand strap hinges
Interesting, that must vary by manufacturer. I went down and measured ours, same pin size on both.
@@JoeEverest I could be wrong. The 8” t hinge from master halco seemed to have a larger pin than the strap hinge from nationwide. I have gone away from strap hinges completely. Like you though we’re trying to convince people to go with steel frame no matter what size the gate is.
Im really confused why he lectures on building in compression, then builds it in tension?????? Wha????
Gives lecture on forces of gravity on fence gate. 🧐
Proceeds to do the opposite of what he just said. 🤦♂️
I appreciate your tact but this guy is not good
Just hire a professional lol
