Young Martin’s Reels was created to honor my dad Martin B. Stivers of Louisville KY. He was an avid fisherman and repaired thousands of fishing reels in his lifetime. I spent numerous hours watching him do so, but I have forgotten most of what he taught me. Now that he is gone, and I find myself in need of reel repair, so I am learning how it is done and trying my best to pass it on.
You can join Young Martin’s Reels on Facebook@ YoungMartin’sReels | Facebook
If I can be of assistance, feel free to contact me Rick48cj2a@yahoo.com
I would also like to thank Dennis Kuntz of 2nd Chance Tackle. His videos have helped to fill in the gaps in my “reel” knowledge. Without his UA-cam videos I’m afraid Young Martin’s Reels would not exist.

You might not be aware that with your ultrasonic cleaner that you can simply fill the main tank with water only, but in your basket like you said you used diesel fuel first , then a soap solution, you can use most any glass jar put the parts that you want to use say the diesel for heavy cleaning and another jar for your soap solution not so dirty parts or second cleaning, just be sure the jars can be lidded and sealed, you can do multiple things or reels in different stages , if you care to and not keep changing out your main tank which you can still use for bigger parts in the basket. Hopefully it helps you save some time and money on your solvents

That’s exactly the way I’ve been doing it. They tell me the important part is to make sure as you change to different containers that maintain at least the minimum water level in the tank. Apparently, if the water level is too low, it will damage the cleaner. So far I have a diesel jar, a soap and water jar, and a vinegar jar. I’m going to add a mineral spirits jar and an acetone jar. I’m thinking that might be enough.

Just happened upon your comment, bought for cheap on eBay a NOS K-mart SS50 new in the box that seller claimed didn't oscillate , took it apart to find crosswind gear completely destroyed, must have been a defect in the metallurgy , don't know what to do with the reel now, think a Daiwa gear of similar size would work? @@ddselvig

      @ddselvig 5 місяців тому

@@pennyan2057 You are correct about the bad metal quality of the metal used in the oscillation gears of the Kmart SS series spinning reels. Over time the gears would develop cracks and self-destruct inside the reel. That design was eventually abandoned in favor of the Daiwa inspired ring arm oscillation lever that rode on the main gear.

Two of them in good condition sold on EBay in the last two months. One sold for $27 and the other for $34. They are not very reliable reels. The anti reverse parts tend to fail.

What kind of ultrasonic cleaner did you get?
Maybe the soft stuff left behind by the Dawn + hot water run was mostly the soap / thickener of the grease. Dawn is a detergent, so it will pick up oils, but maybe it doesn't touch the lithium, calcium, PTFE, or whatever thickener was used in the grease last applied. I've experienced similar with my parts cleaner; Dawn strips the oil, leaves behind the soft gunk.
Outside the parts cleaner I've noticed that, when greased bearings are bathed in acetone, the acetone strips out the oil but leaves behind the calcium soap / thickener of the grease I like to use. I have better results bathing the bearings in mineral spirits, which somehow manages to take out all components of the grease I use, followed by acetone to strip the mineral spirits before applying whatever my final lubricant will be.
I decided to give WD-40 a try, comparing it to mineral spirits while cleaning up three badly-abused old Penn conventional reels and a couple old fishing rods.
Cleaning: I found no discernible difference in cleaning performance.
Green corrosion removal: --I found no discernible difference when used in conjunction with steel wool.-- WD-40 is superior.
Penetration / loosening stuck screws: I think WD-40 takes the win here.
Price: Mineral spirits costs me about $8.00 less per gallon than WD-40.

Sorry it took me so long to get back to you. I couldn’t remember what cleaner I bought and I wanted to make sure I got it correct. It is a Creworks 10 liter ultrasonic cleaner. So far I’ve used it with:
Dawn and water with not much success.
Diesel fuel straight and that worked pretty well at getting into stuck and rusted screws, but it smells bad. It did nothing for eliminate rust. It only loosened rusted or corroded screws. It did a good job of breaking down old grease, but it didn’t remove it all.
Vinegar did a great job of removing rust and corrosion but didn’t do much for grease and oils.
Toilet bowl cleaner did a great job of removing rust and corrosion. I have only tried it on that, and I will only use the sulfuric acid as a last resort. Created horrible fumes.
Pine Sol and water 5:1 mix. Does a good job of removing oil and grease but leaves a residue behind that must be washed off. Doesn’t remove rust and corrosion.
I haven’t tried Mineral Spirits or acetone yet, but they are on my list to try.
WD40 has three different products available in a gallon size:
Regular 100102 Heavy Duty Gallon Can $49
WD-40 Specialist Rust Remover Soak $34
      WD-40 Specialist Cleaner & Degreaser $15
      Which one did you use?

@@youngmartinsreels5314 Standard old WD-40 "Multi-Use Product". UPC 079567490111. I haven't tried it in the ultrasonic cleaner yet, though I intend to the next time I need to service a reel.
If you use acetone in your ultrasonic cleaner, be sure to keep it in a tightly sealed container. That stuff evaporates FAST at room temperature, and it's supposedly quite flammable. I'm not overly concerned about mineral spirits; it's flammable too, but its evaporation rate is, I'd guess, at least 8 times slower than acetone.
Also note that acetone quickly DESTROYS many plastics. For example, just a little bit of acetone on those old Penn Spinfisher drag knobs will cause warping and cracking. Acetone is instant death on polystyrene too. Other plastics are slower to react. I once placed some acetone within an old BBQ lighter fluid container. Seemed okay at first. 3 hours later, however, the container was like a soggy bag, and leaking. Some plastics (polypropylene, for example) don't seem to react at all.

Rick, I truly appreciate how you can repair what seems to be irre irreparable but knowing these Apollo reels pretty well I question if it is worth the effort. I did a bush fix on my Apollo 7050 and it works fine but I absolutely never intend to use it because it’s just a bad reel. Now it I only owned two or three reels and this was one of them I probably try my best to fix it. All I’m saying and given that is not my situation I don’t like the reel and never intend to use it. This Apollo you’re working on has one of those large clips holding the rotor to the housing. You know how very much I dislike reels like this. The Daiwa 1500C is also like this and I dislike that one too! Still your ability to bring back the dead is truly amazing. Your spring fix is far better than mine so and I can hear you laughing, could you make me a spring for my 7050? It would probably need to be somewhat larger so I’ll call you later when I’m back home. Oh, that NIB 486 that I got before Christmas is waiting for me when I get home. It is definitely a reel for my collection as I have two others for fishing. You are just too proud of your new ultrasonic cleaner. I just about can’t stand it as you are so pleased with yourself! LOL. I’m kidding of course. You did a great job with making that spring. I think there will be a lot of folks interested in how you did this. I guess I don’t quite get the joy out of repairing a reel like you do particularly ones like these Apollo reels. Great job as always even on a reel I don’t like. It was also fascinating to see your use of your new ultrasonic cleaner. I probably won’t ever get one since I work on far fewer reels than you and don’t have to produce content for UA-cam. This was a very good video Rick!- Chris

Chris, I realize this isn't a top-of-the-line reel, but it isn't as bad as you make it out to be. This reel has been through a hard life and with a little TLC it is ready to go tackle more fish. The horseshoe clip on the reel seems to be holding up fine with no wobble. For me the weakness was with that goofy rubber claw spring. I'm curious as to whether or not it was a silent design. My field repair certainly isn't silent. In all honesty, the corroded up rear drag was much harder to repair than the AR.
If you think I talked about my cleaner a lot in this video, wait until you see the Pflueger Oceanic reel video. It is a huge asset when cleaning grease choked reels but for most normal servicing it actually takes much longer.

@@youngmartinsreels5314Rick, I am very interested in how your ultrasonic cleaner works and what solutions you use as a cleaner. It is truly fascinating. My AS 7050 doesn’t use that big c-clip but still only has bushings with no bearings. You know I have very few “top-of-the-line” reels but I guess my Daiwas are definitely better quality than these Apollo reels. I guess it’s just a matter of preference. I’ll send you some photos of my 7050 Apollo after I get home. Unfortunately I relapsed again with my chest congestion so I haven’t done much up here. I also want you to see those Norris Shakespeare reels that my friend from Germany sent me. They are very fine reels.

Chris, I’m sorry to hear you are not getting better. Please get well soon. You will get to see the parts cleaner again in my next video. I tried it with Pine Sol and toilet bowel cleaner. Both worked very well at their perspective jobs. So far, no cleaner does it all. They are either good at cleaning dirt, grease and oil, or corrosion, but never all of them. It’s going to require different containers with different solvents for different parts, with some requiring more than one cleaning. I’m tempted to empty two or three cans of WD40 into a jar and try that.
