- Another 100% honest / independent review, here’s Bruce checking-out the HIKMICRO Explorer E20 thermal smartphone plug-in, plus a remote cable setup.
After filming with Bruce, I bought a 0.5m USB-C extension cable and demonstrate this works perfectly with the E20.

Nice video Russ and Bruce
Thanks very much Ian, more to come very soon...
...and thanks again for the loan of such great kit!
First thought on the e20 is wow a wearable screen on some glasses would be epic. Also for hunting using a Samsung phone with an oled screen on a cold night there would be very little glare, just a black screen and a couple of white hot heat signatures
Yep I love the idea of a pair of glasses(?) with some sort of stalk to keep the body of the wee camera away from your warm head, plus a discreet 'heads-up' type display.
Such a wide-angle spotter would be invaluable, and make this super-cool gadget even better.
Thanks for watching, cheers. Russ
base mag 1x would be best for that option
Imagine the possibilities
Yep, and if the thermal imager was mounted rock-solid to your scope it could perhaps be plugged-in to allow a wide-angle thermal PIP view.
Thanks for watching, please share.
Cheers. Russ
Like to see E20 on a drone 😅 will work perfectly on farms for security
That sounds good to me. 🤓
Thanks for watching, cheers. Russ
Hi- I currently have a hikmicro lc06; the footage of the e20 looks MUCH clearer than the lc06- is the e20 a step up from the lc06?
Yes it's 256x193 & a 9mm lens, compared to the LC06's 160x120, though going by online specs the E20 might not be 'quite' as sensitive (re NETD).
I love how portable the E20 is (no excuse for not taking it whenever you're out), although I do miss there not being any audio recording on the videos, for my UA-cam commentary.
Thanks for watching, cheers. Russ
Would be interesting to see this looking into a field at night
I'll see what I can do... if I delay part #2 going live (aiming for today), I could include filming across a paddock... will have a think.
Thanks for watching, cheers. Russ
Hi Russ
Does the E20 work in offline/airplane mode (ie when out in the bush with zero signal) ?
Hi Denny, yep it needs no WiFi / bluetooth and simply plugs into your smartphone's USB-C socket.
It's powered by your phone and records directly to it, the only controls on the E20 itself is the manual focus ring, everything else is controlled by the free HIKMICRO App.
My only wish is that the recorded videos would include audio, but hopefully that'll come with an update soon. 🤞🤓
Thanks for watching, cheers. Russ
Thanks so much. You do a great job! @@RussDouglas222
Hello, can you tell me what application the thermal imager works in?
The free smartphone App 'HIKMICRO Sight'.
Thanks for watching, cheers. Russ
@@RussDouglas222 Thank you, good luck to you too.
@@RussDouglas222 Does this camera app have a reticle? For hunting Like Thermo 2 pro
@@lashadekanosidze4742 Not that I'm aware-of, and the E20 doesn't currently have any way of rifle-mounting it such that it could be used to aim a rifle.
This is purely a thermal spotter. R
Would it plug into an Alpex, thus turnimg it thermal ?. Just a thought.
If the thermal imager was mounted rock-solid to your scope it could perhaps be plugged-in to allow a wide-angle thermal PIP (spotter) view, I'll ask the HIKMICRO team if this is something they're looking into.
Thanks for watching, cheers. Russ
No, the USB port on the Alpex is used for charging and downloading videos recorded on the scope.
The Explorer needs a mobile phone or tablet running Android or MAC OS and the HIK app before it will work
Cheers Bruce. Thanks for the reply mate.
@@RussDouglas222 Thanks buddy. It was just a thought. 🙂
If this came with a reticule you could use it as a rifle scope!
Hypothetically, though in reality the USB-C smartphone connection's nowhere near sturdy enough for that.
Thanks for watching, cheers. Russ
The Xinfrared T2 and T3 (which the HIK copies) come with reticle and optional housing so that you can use as thermal riflescope.
@@nightvisionnz Yes but I'd have zero confidence of that holding zero due to the relatively flimsy bracket that holds the whole assembly to the rifle.
If the thermal unit was secured as tightly as a scope is mounted it wouldn't matter how the phone was mounted, as it would just be susceptible to knocks (which still isn't ideal given the cost of smartphones!) -but the thermal imager has to be rock-solid to use to target live prey.
Thanks for watching, cheers. Russ
No you couldn't
@@nightvisionnzI wonder if you could use the infirays app?
I'd be worried about snapping it off
It's so compact you'll have to be careful not to lose it for sure.
Cheers. Russ
