To capture such intensity while playing in a sterile tv studio is beyond belief. They play as if they’re in a stadium. Neil is, and will always be, the Man, but together on stage and duelling with Stills - well, it just doesn’t get any better, does it? But this is from an age when music meant something. No - everything!! And still does to some of us.
Hard agree. I have watched this many times over the years, and it's the raw intensity that stands out for me. It showcases why these guys, all of them, but Neil especially, deserved all the accolades. And Stills, rocking the sh*t out of that White Falcon! And this song is so genius because it's a rocking, sweet-harmonies toe-tapper, but beneath that, it is, literally a deeply haunted Southern Gothic short story, in the style of O'Conner or Faulkner, set to music. And that's why Neil is a freakin' giant!
Stiils Young Band has a great album - Long May You Run. Check it out, especially the title tune if you don't already know it. Thanks for the great vid!
To see Neil and Stills jamming together towards the end is transcendental, such pure expression of life. He was in incredible rhythm guitarist as this shows and his passion is over the top. I’ve probably watched this 50x
I remember seeing the show live on TV back in the day when I was a child TV show called the music scene hosted by David Steinberg, the “hip comedian” this was a great performance
I was lucky enough to see CS&N 20 years ago in of all places Amarillo, Texas. Happened to hear a commercial on the radio driving home from work the afternoon of the show. Stopped by the civic center to see if tickets were available, not many tickets had been sold and it was 2 hours before the concert. The lady selling the tickets gave me 2 for free. Even though the concert was less than half full they put on a great show and spent some time just talking to the audience. So glad I got to see them.
One of the best I've ever seen was his Garage Band tour with Sam Kinison and the whole garage/cop stage setup at the Cow Palace, 1987 I'm pretty sure. Mind blowing.
Neil was/is such an eclectic musician & performer. He could pull off a jam to rival the Allman Brothers, or sit down and harmonize with CSN, belt out Goldrush by himself on the piano, or play a flawless version of Needle on the Johnny Cash show. A true legend.
Right there with you Ralph. He is a passionate musician that spends no time mulling over bullshit like who is the best. He was the best he could be every time he hit the stage, but he clearly wasn't one of the greatest. Way too many talented guitarists that are being forgotten like Ry Cooter, Buckethead, Jimi Hendrix, Derick Trucks Duane Allman, BB King, Muddy Waters, Robert Johnson, Jimmy Page, Edgar and Johnny Winter, Joe Walsh, Etc

It's amazing to see Stephen Stills so young. At Woodstock in August 1969, he was so intimidated he almost had a case of stage fright (also the name of a GREAT song by The Band's Rick Danko - check it out. They played at Woodstock the morning of my birthday, August 17.) I believe he even said over the "mic" that he was scared shi*less). Everyone knows how great Neil Young, Graham Nash, and even (I wanna' be a star) David Crosby were. What set Stills apart from all the others was that his family had spent A LOT of time living in South America and he absorbed a great deal of their unique musical sound in his playing. If you spend time listening closely to much of his solo work it is unmistakable. A kind of fusion of cultures. I saw him solo in one of his concert tours in the '80s. You sure got your ticket cost's worth at that time. Unless you've seen him solo in concert everyone who thinks they know him to be talented really have no true idea of just how good he was/is.
Steinberg's hi out of his mind on speed here, too. Check out Dallas & Greg playing behind CSN&Y on this same tune poolside at Big Sur. Amazing rhythm section that doesn't get enough credit for keepin' up w/ these dudes. The bonus part of that video is where Stills challenges some kid to a fist fight. At a Peace & Love festival lol.
For my money & time, and for what it's worth I have a Doctor of Music in Guitar Performance and Lit from Indiana U, Stephen's Wah-Wah solo on Carry On is greatest use of that guitar effect ever.
