Few effects can force a transformation in playing style quite like octave pedals. They can make single notes scream like birds of prey or add a beefy sub-octave thump that makes every string pluck sound like it weighs 300 pounds. But no matter which extreme you pursue, an octave pedal will make playing a familiar passage feel very different-and, on good days, prompt musical invention.
Digital design has made octave pedals more flexible and friendly to experimental, inventive approaches in recent years. And clever manufacturers can now deliver some of the wider, interactive functionality of treadle-based designs like the DigiTech Whammy in compact pedals. TC Electronic’s Sub ‘N’ Up, the latest addition to the company’s TonePrint series, is a cool study in how much octave-tweaking fun you can stuff into a little enclosure without a treadle.
The surprisingly basic, relatively simple layout of the Sub ‘N’ Up includes knobs for controlling dry/effected mix, the amount of “up” or high octave, the amount of first sub-octave, and the intestine-rumbling frequencies of the pedal’s second sub-octave engine. There is also a three-way toggle switch that allows selection between polyphonic settings, a TonePrint selector (our demo unit came loaded with a killer faux organ sound, complete with its own modulation), and traditional, non-polyphonic mode (labeled “classic”). It’s an intuitive pedal, even if you’re a neophyte octave pedal user.

I got this recently for bread & butter octave work. Low and behold, the Toneprint stuff allows you to use overdrive and modulation on the different octaves, and things can get real interesting real fast. TC should market how many effects are really wrapped up in each pedal, because its borderline ridiculous. Lots a fun.
Awesome!! My Sub 'N' Up just arrived at my front door a few minutes ago. I can't wait to check it out, but first I have the fun of rearranging my pedal board. Then I'll be spending the entire evening dialing it in.
I bought this pedal just one month ago. So much inspiration, so much amazing sounds, including some really crazy ambient stuff, toneprint, awesome tracking etc. I use it with BOSS CH-1, some delay effect and for unique and experimental sounds with lead channel of my ENGL Thunder amp. So much fun with Sub N Up! :)
I hope TC Electronics paid you a lot for this review, because I really want one now!
Just got this pedal today. Its gonna be an amazing 2020
same!
Marc T. Have fun buddy.
lol
If only
Lol!
I have that guitar!! It's a Schecter Ultra III. The bridge pup is not stock. It normally has 3 identical Duncan designed pups.
The guitar is a Schecter Ultra-III and it does come stock with Duncan's, though the bridge pickup is different from the one in the photo on the Schecter site, so it's probably aftermarket.
It is definitely an aftermarket upgrade.
It's the low end version of the Duncan mini humbucker, which is fairly hot.The newer ,vintage version, - which doesn't have a logo on the plate,- is a great pick up, like the one's in Firebirds .
first video to demo the possible bass application. Thank you sir!
John, I love you man! The videos you do for Premier Guitar are such a pleasure to watch. You're cool in my book... Cheers!
Your demos are always a pleasure to watch - creative playing and pedal applications, and you really test the outer limits of the gear. Keep it up!
Also, if you want to hear some crazy octave pedal action, check us out!
Great review. Thank you for spending a bit of time playing on each settings alone and together.
Awesome demo and playing my friend!!!
crazy sound and pedal!thanks for review
THANK YOU! A no bullshit explanation of what it does and how it does it... Only then do you editorialise. Well done.
I Love You Premier Guitar
fabulous review John
Glad to see the Super Sonic continues to make an appearance in your reviews. It lets me know what these pedals sound like with Fender cleans.
As always a great demo ! John your an excellent player.
That intro was sweeeeeet.
Great playing Timothy Olyophant!
This guy is the lost brother linking Olyophant with Walton Goggins from Justified.
I'm sold.Nice Schecter. I love my P T Fastback Special.
TC Electronic pedals are great, I use the Viscous Vibe and Corona mini chorus, and the Sub n Up is next on my list, but be aware, the TonePrint function is great, but it does not work through a Shure radio system. I don't know about other digital radios though.
Please tell me you wrote that riff and even if you didn't write it that you just kind of rocking at your own way man cuz that was jamming
Have you tried Boss OC-5?
Which do you prefer TC Electonic Sub N Up or Boss OC-5?
What happened on the last few seconds? It sounds like the pedal couldn't track well enough to keep up with John's strumming and it got compressed and weird-sounding.
Must be your end! Sounded fine to me!
Tore should send John some free pedals for this awesome review.
John ...never ever seen a Schecter like that. Aside from a few "Start" models all their guitars are Metal oriented. Where can I get one?
What is the song at 5:46
Surprisingly John actually looks better with the long gray hair. Crazy. Some dudes can rock the gray haha.
hey john is that a tattoo on your left hand? or is it a reminder that you have to go to the groceries to pick up some bread? (haha just kidding great review as always!)
It's my palm pilot reminder... (sorry, punny).
love the fender super sonic
VERY INTERRESTING GOOD INSTRUCTIONS
can do the same with the digTech whammy.
This guy looks like a healthy version of Steve O, really good player though.. gotta love those jazz licks 👌
He makes it sound good, and the Toneprint is cool, but the Pitchfork is the way to go.
Nice job. I like it when pedal demos use subtlety with the knob settings, rather than ridiculous extremes, but you didn't do the same with distortion, which would have truly exposed the pedal's greatest weakness, which is, it sounds like a mess with distortion. That's the reason for subtlety. See how that works?
hi is it better in the front or effects loop? if front before or after distortion thanks
Stephen Fell always before mate ...after tuner is the norm
hi John how well does this work with a bass
it does theres loads if videos. and i tried it the other day and the stock stuff sounds good, the toneprint app wasnt working for me tho so i couldnt get into it to much.
The most recent episode of That Pedal Show demos some of the Sub 'N' Up TonePrints.
Wow billy Bob Thornton plays guitar
I think he actually does.
diz dude is cool
The perfect reproduction
baseball hahah !
Don't buy this pedal. It has completely blown out two very expensive amps of mine. It's unusable, save yourself the heartache and skip this.
Sounds like user error there
@@chris-tq5ly hm, an amp set at 3/10 volume being blown from a pedal being used as advertised. You call that user error? Then I call you a fool lol
@chris 86 if you are using it to turn a bass into a higher octave it's fine. But if you're using it to send bass tones through your guitar amp, it is asking to blow your amp. You can talk to the store who had to refund me the amp if you don't believe me 🤣
@@adamzukmusic4562 I’m not the one that blew my amp buddy!
@@adamzukmusic4562 what was the amp? There is a warning about using the sub 2.
c'est Bogdanoff lol ;)
this guy is the worst at demoing gear
Jasiu Mich then why are you watching him ?
