The toneprint editor tool is super powerful. You can remap any of the knobs to do pretty much any function. As well as add modulation effects and equalization controllable by the knobs. Pretty much being able to to make a completely different pedal.
First thing ANYBODY should do when they get a tc pedal is open up the back and set the dip switch to buffered bypass. Not only does it make the efect die off more fluidly, but it gets rid of the steep, sharp "click" of the effect coming on.
Carvin- I used to have a Carvin amp in the 70’s with six 10s in it. Great amp, can’t remember the wattage of the head, but it never gave us any problems.
I was looking for an Octave pedal and found only Nano POG to sound great but was too expensive for me.Now I found TC Sub N Up octaves and I couldn't be happier.TC rules ,great sounding pedals at great price.aim buying this one .
Great demo ;) The riff you're playing at 7:32 reminds me of the song 'Hocus Pocus' by Focus. Was it on purpose? ;) Gotta try it, if I buy the pedal - great rock sound!
Awesome demo. I gotta start using my Pitchfork more! I like the Toneprint option but I have it through my Flashback. I like t.c. Electronic for time and mod based stuff. I've not heard a T.c. Elec. gain pedal that did not sound muddy or unnaturally choppy. But, I enjoyed your playing and demo of this killer pedal. Thank you
wow. what a good sounds, especially when you thinknof the price. A Pog mini for instance is nearly the double the money, in euros at least. Good demo Bill!
Maybe you didn't realise or maybe i didn't hear you say it but poly mode is much better for chords it tracks pretty perfectly on nearly all chords 👍 love your channel very in depth and unbiased reviews etc 🤘
This pedal is awesome, i have owned one for a while and it's so powerful i find i never use the lowest frequency control, just leave it on zero and the unit sounds fantastic.
Got into your music and video's a short while ago. Really fills a musical void that I was looking for. Now I don't expect you to respond, but do you have any solid delays to recommend alongside the Neunaber Immerse reverb? I'm studying abroad next month and will only be bringing 3-4 pedals and a telecaster
***** If I were going overseas to study and could only take one delay, I think that it would be the TC Electronic Flashback Triple Delay. It's got 3 discrete delay line that you can run in parallel or series, a bunch of different built-in delay types and also supports TonePrints. Sounds fantastic. Here's a recent performance Vid I posted that is just the Triple Delay: ua-cam.com/video/Jt6eHwume4M/v-deo.html. Other delays that are worthy of recommendation (in other words, I own them and love them!) are the Strymon DIG the Timeline. The DIG is super easy to use and has a gorgeous sound, and the Timeline is fantastic, although fairly pricey. I've got a bunch of videos on the channel that use these 2 delays.
Thanks for your response, that video was great! However, I'm looking for a "standard"-sized pedal. Has to fit on a pedaltrain nano+. Aside from the delay I'm bringing the Immerse, a polytune, phaser and a dynacomp. Run that into a laptop with BIAS desktop. No doubt the Triple Delay will find its way onto my "home" board at some point, though. It's absolutely stunning
***** Ah. Gotcha. Should have asked about the size/footprint first. In that case, I think that the standard TC Electronic Flashback is worthy of consideration. It's got the same delay quality as the Triple Delay, a TonePrint slot, 7 second delay time, and a looper. www.tcelectronic.com/flashback-delay.
Excellent review! Sounds great...esp in stereo. Hope it sounds as good coming out of just one amp. I was actually thinking about adding a Fender VI or Danelectro Baritone/Bass guitar for a song or two...but then I started thinking about lugging another instrument to every gig, No thank you. Then started searching reviews on octave devices..and yours was VERY informative. I think this is it...and I like the idea of the sound-print! Thanks again, great review!
Great videos! Is the sound the same on this pedal as it is on the SubnUp mini? Not sure if its just me but this one seems to have a bit more organ effect to it on the poly + up setting.
Any kind of shimmer reverb (minus some probably very specialized ones) is just a standard reverb with an added octave up, so you could just (probably) put your SNU before your Reverb and make a kind of DIY Shimmer.
I'm considering buying this pedal. I'm glad you've reviewed it as I want to use it for ambient music and I trust the onion knight. hehehe. great review man.
Ha! Thanks so much!!! Hey - and stay tuned for the video this week (Wednesday). I've got a breakdown of a really cool sounding effects chain that highlights the Sub N Up. all the best!!!
I ll have to say using 2 amps for stereo sound I ll probably end up using it full wet on left and right amp will be direct guitar. What do you say baout that it will color stereo left and total dry right to give me 2 seperate guitar tone mixed might feel like 2 guitars
True.I am too G.A.S addicted and I thought the only cure is when you're broke ,but then toughst to myself that the moment I find myself with some extra cash it always goes to new gear.
I thought I'd got all the pedals I want (or need - how naive of me 😅), but lately I've found myself wishing I had access to a decent polyphonic octaver. The one in my Zoom multi-FX absolutely stinks (glitchy, mono), so I've been using my BOSS SY-1 Synthesizer - better, but I'd rather use it for actual synth tones! I think the Sub'n'Up looks perfect - affordable, polyphonic, and doesn't glitch (noticeably) - though I may go for the Mini version to save a few pence and millimetres...
I'm actually listening through studio monitors....I have my laptop but never use it unless I'm going somewhere and need a computer. What is it with Americans and laptops???
Dear Bill! I am your fan! I play electric violin and viola. My question is about the low notes with sub octave pedals. What do you thing when do you use the low or doubble low octaves in chords, I hear so maybe comes the interferences. They are confusing-bothering or no? Is it either who how likes the sounding? Or is a universal regularity in the sound? I am thinking of building harmony. Your great respect: Balázs Gergely from Hungary (So sorry for my english.)
I would say it all depends on the material you are playing. If you are playing chords with very close intervals, the additional lower octave can create a muddy sound. Also, I find it helpful to have the lower octave set to a lower volume compared to the original pitch.
Every creative guitarist should own one of these, I just bought one and have barely used it yet but I have found it so easy to lay down basslines with my 6 string....if I had a bass player i'd fire him immediately......awesome piece of electronics!

That's the great thing about the TonePrint editor. There level, EQ and modulation options for the Sub N Up to play around with. There are several modulation options like Flanger, Chorus, Tri-Chorus, etc.
usually pitch shifters go second in the chain after a compressor for better tracking. But you can put them wherever you may fancy to get different results.
While there are no no "drive" knobs on the pedal itself, in the TonePrint editor, there is a drive control for Up, Sub and Sub2 with up to 40db of gain. You can make it sound pretty nasty!!
+Chords Of Orion Right, but I know personally I wouldn't use all three octaves with drive. It would be too messy. but you could always tie both of the upper octaves to one knob. I think you can do that. Or just set dry to full on and replace it with drive.
Nice! i actually have the Micro POG but i was thinking of getting This one or the Nano POG ( just for the size), but i don't want it to be a "downgrade"
Eduardo Chavez one thing I like about the EHX Micro POG that the Sub N Up lacks is the dry out but if it's something you don't use I would definitely spend my $ on the Sub N Up
Hi Thank you I will buy one I asked you as I use two amps 1 wet +1 dry and all the FX go in the wet amp FX loop but my distortion pedal goes in the front.
The muddiness comes from the fact that when you play chords the notes in the low octave stack together too closely. It's the same as playing a closed voiced chord on a piano in a low octave, that just doesn't sound good. I think playing chords with the subs on is just a bad idea.
Chords Of Orion after seeing your video I checked the TC Electronics 25 minute video where they're tweaking the settings for the tone print...so many possibilities!! Bought it yesterday!
leoetine Excellent choice. I just bought the Arena reverb and after reading about Toneprint I realize I should have bought a TC Toneprint equipped pedal for every effect I use. I am loving new technology.
***** Ah. Gotcha. I agree that the octave effect generally sounds better than the pitch fork - which makes sense, since the pedal is dedicated to octaves and has the 3 modes.
Sir Davos recommends it
Hehe!

Oh my god. Will you just please post your version of Hocus Pocus? I can’t sleep well until I hear it.

I thought about getting the Sub n up pedal and I'm sure pleased you are so thorough
Buy one, they are awesome.
Great demo ;) The riff you're playing at 7:32 reminds me of the song 'Hocus Pocus' by Focus. Was it on purpose? ;) Gotta try it, if I buy the pedal - great rock sound!
Ha! Must have been sub-conscious on my part. But glad you like the demo!!
Thanks for an honest & pro review. Very hard to have those two in the same package
Getting one today thanks sir Davos.

Just had this delivered and so far it is amazing, i can't wait to try it in a low drone :-)
This pedal is great for ambient stuff. I use it with my 6 string bass..mostly to go up :)
Nice!!
wow. what a good sounds, especially when you thinknof the price. A Pog mini for instance is nearly the double the money, in euros at least. Good demo Bill!
That's a great point! The POG version are more expensive for similar functions here in the USA too.

I thought he was going to break into Stranglehold.
The Nuge! Although it would have been a little out of character for me. ;)
This pedal is awesome, i have owned one for a while and it's so powerful i find i never use the lowest frequency control, just leave it on zero and the unit sounds fantastic.
The tone print thing is where you can really make this pedal versatile... Nice job!
So true!!!!

Reminds me of Franklin Zappa at points. Great demo my dude.
Thanks!!
Props on the Carvin Holdsworth model
Love that guitar! I've had it for about 11 years now...
Excellent review! Sounds great...esp in stereo. Hope it sounds as good coming out of just one amp. The Sub 'N' Up sounds just fine in mono and sounds very nice through a real amp. Just be sure you've got a cab that works well with lower frequencies.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience. Your logic makes a lot of sense to me :)
Great videos! Is the sound the same on this pedal as it is on the SubnUp mini? Not sure if its just me but this one seems to have a bit more organ effect to it on the poly + up setting.
Actually been waiting for someone reliable like you to make a video on this pedal, good job!
Glad you liked the video! And like I mention in the video - the TonePrint capability is the stand out to me for this pedal.
Always...great video. Is there a TonePrint take I can make my s-n-u more of a shimmer? Kind of like the shimmer on the hall of fame 2. Thank you.
Any kind of shimmer reverb (minus some probably very specialized ones) is just a standard reverb with an added octave up, so you could just (probably) put your SNU before your Reverb and make a kind of DIY Shimmer.
Any chance you can do some reviews with two Blues Juniors or of the like, I find the eleven rack a bit lacking.
Wow, the OctaDrive setting would be right at home on early Black Sabbath!
Yes indeed!!!
Nice informative post. Thank you!
I'm considering buying this pedal. I'm glad you've reviewed it as I want to use it for ambient music and I trust the onion knight. hehehe. great review man.

Have you tried Boss OC-5?
Which do you prefer TC Electonic Sub N Up or Boss OC-5?
Do you find the Sub and Up's octaves to be a bit too dark? not cutting through enough?
I ll have to say using 2 amps for stereo sound I ll probably end up using it full wet on left and right amp will be direct guitar.
What do you say baout that it will color stereo left and total dry right to give me 2 seperate guitar tone mixed might feel like 2 guitars
Just came across your reviews. Had to sub. Good stuff!
My wife's going to hate the G.A.S. you gave me. ; ) Peace!
Yes. G.A.S. Once you are addicted, it's over!! :-) Thanks for commenting!

I just got a used one tonight

I subscribed, long overdue, but I subscribed! Thanks for the reviews
Welcome aboard! :-)
Seriously, thanks so much for the support!!
When you are using this, would you, and do you place the "Sub N Up" prior to or after you Strymon Big Sky in your signal chain?
I know this comment is a year old, but octave and pitch effects should go before any modulation, delay, and reverb effects in the effects chain.

@@chordsoforion Thank You very much your answer.
how different from the Boss ps06 harmonist that is any octave or tri up and down in any key ?
Great job sir as always
Many thanks!

But really though, this is a great little pedal for both bass and guitar!
mics audio when you play makes it kind of hard to tell the difference between the output and your strumming
Staring into your soul.
If this is an Octave Pedal, how do they get the Flanger sound (or any other modulation sound for that matter) via the Tone Print?
That's the great thing about the TonePrint editor. There level, EQ and modulation options for the Sub N Up to play around with. There are several modulation options like Flanger, Chorus, Tri-Chorus, etc.
Where do you put it in the signal chain? Thank you. :)
usually pitch shifters go second in the chain after a compressor for better tracking. But you can put them wherever you may fancy to get different results.
Can this take the place of the pitch fork shifter?
great review!
Thanks!
Very good review. I like it too :) greetings from germany
Thanks so much!!!!
I conclude that... you have long and slim toes. Thanks for the review. I am getting one in a bit.
I forgot to ask...have you compared it to the mini sub n up, and if so, is the mini similarly good?
The mini is the same pedal and sound, just smaller with smaller and less knobs. It also has toneprint capability
So the Octadrive tone print includes overdrive?
While there are no no "drive" knobs on the pedal itself, in the TonePrint editor, there is a drive control for Up, Sub and Sub2 with up to 40db of gain. You can make it sound pretty nasty!!
+Chords Of Orion Can you reasigne the drive to one of the knobs? Say the 2 Oct. up knob.
Yes, you can indeed assign drive to one of the knobs. Keep in mind that there are 3 drives (Up, Sub and Sub2) - there is no master drive parameter.
+Chords Of Orion Right, but I know personally I wouldn't use all three octaves with drive. It would be too messy. but you could always tie both of the upper octaves to one knob. I think you can do that. Or just set dry to full on and replace it with drive.
James Vernon Yep, you can do everything you suggest...
Nice demo!, how does this pedal compares with de EHX Micro POG?
It's a lot less expensive than the Micro POG and has more features, including TonePrints, and sounds great!
Nice! i actually have the Micro POG but i was thinking of getting This one or the Nano POG ( just for the size), but i don't want it to be a "downgrade"
Eduardo Chavez one thing I like about the EHX Micro POG that the Sub N Up lacks is the dry out but if it's something you don't use I would definitely spend my $ on the Sub N Up
Hi there. How long does it take to load new presets and can I do it via iPhone playing live gig?
It does not take long, although, I would probably load the TonePrint between sets. I think it might be a little too cumbersome to do between songs.
@@chordsoforion thank you very much for your reply :)
When you flip in to classic mode it goes very Court of Crimson King in my head :-D
Oh yeah - I totally get that!
Nice socks.
Would you recommend this over the micro or nano Pog ?
I would definitely recommend it, as it has the same octave capabilities for less money in addition to having the TonePrint feature.
+Chords Of Orion Thank you. Yer price wise you can get it for £100 over here in the UK and the Micro Pog is £165.
only guitar modeling tecnology (like in Line6 Variax, Roland GK-3 etc.) can give nice transpose because of picking separate sound from each string
huh?
strings? 014?
On the Carvin? Elixir nanoweb electrics 10-46.
Hi does it sound better in the front of the amp or Fx loop
With my rig, it sounds better in front of the amp.
Hi is the reason being it requires a pre amp?
No I don’t think so. Might just be something to do with impedance or levels. It might sound great In the effects loop with your rig!
Hi Thank you I will buy one I asked you as I use two amps 1 wet +1 dry and all the FX go in the wet amp FX loop but my distortion pedal goes in the front.
You're like the Bob Ross of pedals.
6:29 is the actual Satan Chord

Just bought this $100 at GC
Tc electronics has good stuff... and for not so much $£¥€
This one or the nano POG? and why? I have to decide! help!
This one!

leoetine Sweet!
leoetine Excellent choice. I just bought the Arena reverb and after reading about Toneprint I realize I should have bought a TC Toneprint equipped pedal for every effect I use. I am loving new technology.
It seems a lot more variable than my Pitchfork.
How do you mean? In the tone of the shifted pitch?
I mean that it offers more depth to the sounds...I'm not sure if I'm explaining myself properly. Simply put - it seems better than my Pitchfork pedal.
***** Ah. Gotcha. I agree that the octave effect generally sounds better than the pitch fork - which makes sense, since the pedal is dedicated to octaves and has the 3 modes.
Thanks for the feedback!
That guitar looks like my child’s caramel spat out after playing in mouth for a while lol 😂 nice sounds though!
I hear ya. I love the guitar, but would have preferred flame maple top vs. the quilt.
Tune. Your. Guitar. Please!
Shoes. Wear them.
Shoes indoors? Now that's just silly.
That's stupid. Why would you wear shoes when you are playing with pedals, it's much easier to feel them with your feet
