That's what I've always loved about John, hes just fucking happy to be there
The World could really use System of A Down right now honestly.
Why not make a double album. One where Daron gets to do whatever he wants. The other, Serj. Then roll some dice to mix the songs so half of both their works are in both discs. Done. I take check, money order, and pizza pies.
they said they tried that, but by the end either Daron wanted more control or Serj was just over making "Metal" during the final stages of Toxicity he said he was just done
Isn't that what Mezmerize and Hypnotize are to an extent?
@@DiminishingAugmentation yea its them just throwing songs they half assed and serj got out of the band basically, its why theyre so short and released in the same year
@@ohword7950 I thought mezmerize was great but hypnotize was awful.
@@Simonius86 that's crazy to me the double albums seemed more refined and mature than their previous albums
This hurts my heart so much because everything he is saying is so accurate and so right that we will probably never ever see another system album because certain band members can’t check their egos at the door. I know shavo and John both want to do the album I also know Darren wants to do the album but Darren and Serj have a Lotta shit to work out. I was so fortunate to get to catch this last tour right before serj got Covid. And it was everything my soul needed because I had waited for so many years to hear new music by them and to see them play live and it breaks my heart that that may never happen again because they are literally one of my top favorite bands alive or dead. So I will sit here and wait endlessly for a small ounce of Hope to hear new music again from them.
We need to sto bullshitting and saying "certain" band members.
We all know it's Serj, and onlySerj who's been holding them back since 2006.
Rest of the band are totally on board and if it was up to them they'd have made 4 new albums by now.
*that band member being serj* 😂
@@ziudra91 so true, Daron still makes music with Scars On Broadway, I saw Scars in 2019, was a great show and I saw SOAD for the first time in January. Both show did not disappoint.

Fukked Up.
Had the honor of meeting this guy at comiccon back in 2011. Super humble, talked to me forna good minute, no security. Just a booth and a fan. I bought some comics he was selling and got him to sign them. Best celebrity experience yet
I only know him from interview videos, but he always strikes me as a very sincere and empathetic person. Maybe even to a degree that he may be naive sometimes. I don't mean that as an insult, because to be honest a bit of naivety would have helped SoaD get through their problems. Just get over it, just be friends, and just create new music.
I met him unexpectedly at Comic-Con as well I wanna say 2018..same experience super cool guy! Didn’t even know he had a comic book shop
This is heartbreaking but makes me love John and SOAD even more.
As Doyle from Misfits said: This business is the only one people can't get along to make millions of dollars.
5 albums and two new songs from this band! Either way, they are definitely quality over quantity. Love these guys!!
Ego Brains. It's already been discussed that Serj and Daron are at odds about the credits. Hence why Scars put out new music and Daron stated those were System songs but he was tired of waiting and decided to put them out for Scars. So the band initially wants to get going, there's just an internal riff they need to sort out. It's a weird situation that's been going on. None of them "need the money" everyone has their own venture and side jobs. Just a matter of when the riff will be fixed in-between everyone and they are willing to grind out music and grind out touring again.

Which one is the annoying Liberal making a big deal about everything?
Or its just Daron telling SOAD fans „hey, look, here, new music from Scars, it was usually for soad, buy it“
Sadly, I‘d believe it was just PR from Daron
@@spurs_7798 even serj said some of his songs on "elasticity" were meant for a new SOAD album, you think that's a stunt too? 🤔
@@KrishmanyuThakur Read my comment. Am I talking about Serj? Seriously, open your fkin eyes.
Damn.. his words really resonate and you can tell he is speaking honestly about the situation. I'd be upset if I were in his shoes too.
I've been frustrated as well with this band for a while now, for a few different reasons. I can't square the circle on how they cant find a way come together in the studio to create new music, but they are more than capable of coming together whenever they need to play their old stuff in sold-out arenas to legions of fans... I mean Im glad that they still play shows, I am grateful for that. But after nearly two decades of this behavior, the optics just start to look bad after a while. Like it becomes very obvious that this band is just not capable of working cooperatively behind the scenes anymore, and when they do come together for a show I would bet money that Daron and Serj hardly ever speak to eachother on a personal level backstage. The attitude has turned into something resembling "we dont have to like eachother, lets just get out there and do our thing then we will go our separate ways again right afterwards." Im torn on it all too, like I am glad that at least they are getting to do something for their fans in the form of live shows but at the same time it feels like this band has nothing new that they care to say, and are content to just play the old stuff, over and over again. So I agree with John in the video. That would be really frustrating to deal with if I were a creative person or a musician in that situation.
(Yes I realize they released two singles fairly recently, but this doesn't affect my overall thoughts here. If a couple singles can zero-out almost two decades of studio inactivity for you then go ahead and disregard what I'd been saying.)
Btw this is coming from someone who was a huge fan through the early/mid 2000s, and still am in some ways, so I'm not trying to shit on them for the sake of it or anything like that. Just my two cents that have been building over the years.
I was lucky to meet John after a Scars On Broadway concert in Brussels! And I have to say that those are amazing memories! Very friendly and down to earth top artist! Keep making music John! In any way possible 👌🏻👍🏻🔥
Such an awesome drummer🤘
I love hearing John's perspective on continuing to make music with SOAD. I am a life long fan of them and I agree with John they have the potential to invoke change. Hopefully one day I will be looking forward to seeing the members of SOAD coming back together
As an 18-year-old back in 2001, I was a huge fan of SOAD and Toxicity had such an impact on my life that I still consider it probably the greatest metal record released in my lifetime. But at the same time, at almost 40 and nigh on 17 years after the release of Hypnotize, I find myself not really caring anymore whether they will ever release a new record or what they have to say about things in the world today. This band will always have a special place in my heart, but it's simply been too long for me to pretend that I still care about their releasing any new material at all.
They don't need to. It's not like they are Nirvana or something.
I feel ya. Their best days are behind them now, not to say they couldn't garner attention and have success now if they managed to come together for a new album;
But the state of rock music being what it is today, it just wouldn't have the same impact.
Gotta strike while the iron is hot, as the saying goes, and they've let too much time pass. It's a shame really. They had something truly unique that clicked with people, it both defined the Times and was a prescient warning for today. Oh well. We will always have those old songs to remind us.
@@jeanpaulmichell7243 I wholeheratedly agree with this, mate.
Damn, this breaks my heart. But at the same time, everything happens for a reason. Who knows, maybe if we had gotten that other album maybe we would've been shitting on it and hoping that they would retire (which is wishful thinking, probably, since Genocidal Humanoidz was amazing)
It makes me incredibly sad to hear this.. Life is too short. I wish they'd just squash their differences and move on even if not for the music, but for themselves as brothers and bandmates. This band literally changed my life. I know they'll never see this, but if they did I'd just urge them to please stop fighting and bickering. It gets you nowhere. You'll say things you'll regret. Regret is painful and will break your heart. Find the strength to move on. We believe in you.
Bro I agree. I agree so much, but I have to know if it's a corporate beef. Neither serj nor daron wants to call a stick a stick and be 100% real about it man. Fact is as we all know it, both of them created the SOAD sound but they can't cope as to who was the first voice
I agree but things happen for a reason In this life unfortunately. They’ll probably come back together one day & continue making music. Serj said everyone will know about it when the time comes
Considering how much time passed and the fact they don't make any music anymore it surprised me how good the new songs for Armenia were. Perfect SOAD essence untouched
Daaaaaaaaamn!! This is probably the most honesty and candid you could get about such a situation, really....
John, you are absolutely correct!!! We NEED you guys to get along and crank out that music.
Man in my opinion John is the most eloquent and cool headed of all of SOAD. The way he talks about them having a gift and theyre squandering it.. You can tell he loves the band and wants it to continue
We love you John, and we also love you Darren, Serj, and Shavo. SOAD is more than music, it's resistance and expression incarnate. The world needs your voices, now more than ever.
So Serj can 'fight the power' and promote vaccines? It's probably for the best that they don't make music anymore when you don't recognise the oppressive nature of the COVID measures and the insidious dangers of the jabs. Serj seems way too brainwashed himself to be able to still write any meaningful protest songs.
I'd love for SOAD to make another album or if not just tour again. I'll always be grateful that I saw them in concert and I would again in a heartbeat new material or not!!! That's a true fan!!!!
It's a battle of egos between serj and daron that hurts the other band members and themselves as well. As a System fan, one of the things I want is a new album, released while I follow them. Removing the last two songs, their last album was released the year I was born. I didn't have the taste, the feeling of consuming something new from them simultaneously with the launch, which would be something amazing for me and for many other people who appreciate their work.
Serj just can’t come to terms with the fact that he’s not the big swinging dick of the band that he thinks he is. Everyone knows the creative core of the band is Daron.
If Serj and Daron would get their egos aside, we'd have a new SOAD album by now, maybe even 5 - 10 years ago.
@KnightsofGbs the thing is, Serj DID want the middle ground. If you listen to Serj's terms coming back into SOAD, he clearly says that him and Daron would get to do 6 songs each. It might even sound authoritarian but I understand where Serj is coming from, considering the fact he wasn't able to really do much creatively during Mezmerize/Hypnotize.
I love this band, and I won't lie, I cried hearing those 2 new songs. They were amazing it took me back to a happier time. I don't think we'll ever hear more SOAD though. Serj and Daron basically hate each other, and struggle over creative differences, and think that's too much for them too get over
it's sad we live in the timeline where SOAD just stopped putting out music
Been a while now
So frustrating...what he says is true, we only have so much time in this life and making it to a point where you are able to express your art & get paid, shouldn't be taken for granted. We all need be thankful for the opportunities we are given rather than argue about who is getting "more".
I really wish they would come out with a new album 😤😤😢
Never underestimate the wisdom of the drummer
It's such a shame, I was in this position for years and it's horrible. Feeling so ready to make music, people asking why you're not playing and you have to say "Sorry, I want to but the other members aren't up for it" but YOU are the one who ends up coming away feeling hurt and guilty you let people down, even though it wasn't your fault. Totally understand what he is going through, music is passion no matter if you are the biggest rock band or just jamming in a bedroom. It hurts like hell having that passion snuffed out
If you have that passion then I wouldn't let it go to waste. If members can't come to terms then keep creating your own music, it will find it's way!
Find new members. I've seen a sick band not make music over one guy being a chode
EXACTLY my words and thoughts and emotions as also.
I still think it’s Serj who doesn’t want to make a new SOAD album. John,Daron and Shavo all seem on board with making new music. Daron’s music with Scars On Broadway is as great as SOAD in my opinion.
I liked the dictator album more than steal this album and everything after
yes on the Serj part, but also Daron wants to take full creative control from what i can tell its got to effect everyone or atleast Serj
@@ohword7950 well Daron wrote a majority of System songs to begin with
@@BungleGrindClown now you see Serj’s point of view, he wanted his creative way as well
@@ohword7950 no denying Serj’s talent I’ve enjoyed plenty of his solo stuff. But I just wish we would get another SOAD album or at least a tour or some more singles
I would love to hear John Dolmayan play in another band or do like a solo project with some other members I bet they would sound great. Wonder if he'd consider doing his own project in music.
He did Scars on Broadway with Daron

There's a time for everything. I respect that people won't make music if it's not possible. I've seen other bands pressure themselves to make it even when it doesn't work and that can be ugly too.
This guy is one of the most sane people in rock
He has some pretty baffling political stances considering the band he's in, but for sure at least he's humble and he's just wanting to put out some music.
@@hooch2316 i agree that his political views are surprising compared to the rest of the band but i respect him for saying that in the end its the music that count.
LOL
He's a survivor of the first internationally known genocide, it would make sense that he'd be a conservative. If he were a progressive talking about open borders when his ancestral borders were invaded it would be nothing short of ironic. In comparison to one of SOADs members. Animals do recognize borders, their own are as arbitrary.
@@DrOfficedog that genocide occurred in 1915...so he's over a 100 yrs old ?
Please put out a new album. We want some new S.O.A.D. music.
You can't force art. Just be grateful for what's already here
Besides the legal matters, if they all want to make an album except for Serj (which is fine by me, any artist has a choice) then Daron, Shavo and John should just start another project and continue making music. Clearly there's a general frustration that needs to be released.
It think it's probably two things: 1. They understand that Serj's voice is a key aspect of SOAD's music and 2. Some band members might feel they'd be doing Serj dirty and if that happened, that door is closed for sure
Feels weird to know the band you've had at the top of your musical podium for over half your life now just can't work shit out like grown ass adults and release music.
This goes to both Serj and Daron alike, but I expected more of them regarding this issue, regardless of how shitty Daron was to be around after the STA days, regardless of how much they might hate each other's guts, this is just sad.
Just imagining the outstanding music they could be making together right now, specially with how the world has gone to shit over the last 10 years, sometimes I avoid their music just not to get bitter about this whole situation, which is as heartbreaking and enraging as it sounds.
Fuck The System
i agree with most of this. Serj has said multiple times though that the reason that they havent made a new album isnt because they absolutely hate eachother. he explained that they still consider eachother friends. i do think that they dont agree creatively, though.
it sucks because i remember being about nine years old and discovering this band, only to realize that they hadnt released any new music in years. im almost 15 now, and ive learned to be grateful for everything they have put out, as frustrating as that is.
It’s so weird because they still tour as a band. I saw them for the first time this last January and they put on an awesome show. KoRn opened for them and they put on a great show as well. And they’re still putting out good, quality music.
@@BungleGrindClown they tour when they need money… its all about money for them theyve cashed out
TBH I'd rather they don't put anything out, the band is dead, let it lie. It's very rare that any band puts out material as good as they once did after a long hiatus.
absolutely agree why dont they release more music
John Dolmayan and Danny Carey are my fav drummers..
They should just get over it and compromise and make another double album one album being serj ideas and inspiration and the other being deron that way they both get thier ways and the fans get more material with the whole band together win/win situation
Thank god
I'm gonna go cry now
He’s right. It is frustrating being an artist and knowing these guys can live out the dream Iv had since I was 15 years old. It’s all I wanted and they seem to not appreciate the privilege of that success. Obviously John does but it’s sad and frustrating system can unite.
So sad that money and ego is getting in the way of this amazing band. I agree so much with what he said that they have been blessed with a gift and they are literally squandering it away. Makes me motivated to keep on practicing guitar, the gift I have been blessed with.
He wants it, Shavo wants it, the whole fanbase wants it, but both Serj and Daron equally are holding it all back. Its infuriating and hurtful. Its true they are wasting their lives away.
It’s honestly Serj…
Daron wants it too, the problem is Serj.
Serj has said he doesn't want to make the same music forever and has been focusing on his own music for the past like, I dunno, 15 years now?
I also think (and this is based off all the interviews I've seen and heard) that Daron either wants too much creative control, or believes that he should be paid more than the other 3 band members because he has more creative input and writing credits than them (or something like that).
And I believe that is something that gets in the way of Daron and Serj creating together. That's my opinion at least, from what I've gathered after reading multiple interviews and statements from them all.
@@RileyWhittakerMusic1 Serj has accused Daron of wanting both more creative control and wanting a higher pay due to him writing the bulk of the material. Daron hasn't disputed either, but has also said that Shavo and John are on his side with being against Serj with where he wants the band to go musically.
System Of A Down's still on permanent hiatus and not making a new album was a longest achievement for everyone.
Our days are never coming back...
i see it as a good thing honestly
2011 - 2015 would have been a great time to release a new album. now it feels so overdue ... meanwhile I dont know if I even would be happy about it. soad / sob / serj fell behind it's time of some kind. And everybody would know a new album is not made with passion ... so just leave it ... soad = a great live show for nostalgic people like me.
maybe serj has the best chance to evolve and stand the test of time of all of them.
Yeah sadly it might be too late
Get real serj was off on an his ridiculous new age left wing bullshit. He’s was all wrapped up in neo liberal garbage, if he hasn’t adjusted back to his old self already he’s the one that’s needs to catch up. Down with both parties bunch of hypocrites

Here's my solution:
Build a studio inside a SAW torture house and lock everyone in there, band + audio technicians (sorry for the sound tech guys, guilty by association...shit happens).
Only two ways out:
1) Freedom - get an EP mixed and mastered within a 30 days deadline, and everyone can go free through one exit leading outside the house.
2) Torture - If the 30 days deadline is met and shit ain't ready... oh boy...a door will open connecting the studio to the torture house +.+
From what I’ve read and heard from member interviews. To me it seems like it boils down to Serjs ego not getting the respect he feels he deserves for his musical input. I’ve listened to his solo stuff. For me, it’s ok at best. In my opinion, if he could just admit that Daron is the better songwriter, that Darons’ music is what people gravitate towards… And it’s what helps makes the band the force that it is. It would work again. Of course everyone else’s input is very important and helps add the flavor to the music that makes System the band we love.
being honest im not a huge SOAD fan but i respect them so much, they got a lot of bangers!. When it comes to making music and holding it back because of personal differences. I hope they realize soon that, you literally live only one life and its very short the amount of time we have on this planet. Not pushing yourself to make as much music as you can while you are alive, especially with such a huge fan base at your side. Its a sad thought that once the time has come when you die, to think you had all this time to make so much music and not taking that opportunity leaving those to think "i wish they had done more" is a very depressing thought. Look at musicians who died young, their lives cut short not giving us the change to hear new music. But you have that chance now, are you going to wait until you are dead? by then it will be too late.
Serj and Daron have both actively made music post-SOAD. Pretty sure even Shavo jumped into another project at least early on after SOAD. Not sure about John. Point being it's not like they quit doing SOAD and gave up Music.
@@Ventorath oh yeah of course, but its the songs they make together is what makes it different from their side projects.
It's an insult to the world that SOAD isn't making music.. The give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift.
Come on SOAD... COME ON Serj.
This suuuuuuuuuuuucks to hear. I want another so damn bad
17 years bro....
I kinda find it odd that a guy in a band called "system of a down" supports the establishment
Well, it makes me upset to see a lot of people saying it's Serj or Daron the guilty ones, when in reality, we don't know exactly what really happened(we were not living with them everyday to see the real struggle), and people are just exaggerating over some of the known issues, calling band members ego maniacs. The band has 4 people, i don't think the guilty could only be applied to one or two. I don't feel like just one of them are stopping a new album to be done.
Daron/Serj or whatever, none of them are bad people, they're not obligating no one to do anything. Let's not treat them like they're villains or something.
I wish they would literally do what John said, put everything aside and record it. Would be so great to see how the new songs sound so many years later. Aw man... I don't wanna sound boring, but my dream is to listen to their new album, and i don't think that will ever happens :/
Eh, there are enough interviews from everyone involved to put together that there are massive creative differences between Serj and Daron and that Daron isn't willing to budge on creative control, which means either we get Daron Malakian and the System of a Down (see: the last 2 songs we got) or we get nothing. I can't really blame anyone but Daron for that -- although I'm not sure I'd want to see a SOAD with Serj leading the way at this point in time anyway, given the kind of things he's put out post-Elect the Dead.
Mulher lúcida
This makes me sad. I always had the impression my old best friend and fellow guitarist also had this problem brewing within him, constantly thinking about credit. It's wack, but super talented people also have fragile egos and it's not all about the art.
Very stand up dude
Man, his words are so true. That’s sad to have such a gift and not use it.
Daron said in a interview that they almost had to beg for Serj to do Hipnotize and Mesmerize. What the fuck, man?! What the hell is Serj problem?!
Didn’t Serj say at their last finisher that they will come back with something new?
I read somewhere it was Daron being a control freak with who gets paid what for certain songs? And wanting the main say over artistic direction. Not sure how true that is. Ive seen interview with all four of them and separately, he’s the only one who seems to want more than whats he’s got. I don’t know. New music would be so great to have.
What colour is that Chesterfield couch? It is sick and I want one but that shit is playing tricks on my eyes.
Where does one buy such a couch?
their respective solo work is good. If the group isn't "together* then no point forcing it. other bands have gotten past hiatus so they can work it out.

Im getting a new soad tattoo this year with album names and Im not leaving a spot open for a 6th one (or 7th, depends how you see it).
If the war got them to make two half hearted songs.. its over. A new album will never happen
I want to be their group therapist.
I think it’s too late to release an album cuz serj’s voice isn’t the same and he can’t scream like he used to and Daron is getting a little stiff now (not with the music)
in terms of live shows, i think they wont be the same, but daron could definitely record a new album. the thing is, the album wouldnt be the same because daron has changed his style over the years, and serj’s voice is so much different. even in genocidal humanoidz and protect the land, you can hear the difference in style.

its about money and ego… for guys who are “anti-establishment, anti-capitalism” they sure do care a lot about writing credits and royalties for their art. How poetic
Yes, money is involved (there are interviews confirming that), but you realize one person hoarding the "credits" means one person refusing to let the others contribute creatively, yes? That's kind of a big deal and I understand why that has resulted in no new music.

They should change their name to Band of a Down, because of certain band members who aren't letting the band be what it should be.
It’s kinda ironic that the internal politics of the band got in the way of the band
I can't see them topping 'Toxicity' anyway, that album is too good and they were too in their prime to match. I've never heard of a band coming back 21 years later and surpassing their heyday classic albums.

If they can't work together ok , split the band , but stop this bullshit .... And being from EU i don't see them at all since , they are making a few dates each year but in america .... Peace from France ; )
Johns the only dude in that band worth listening to
This is sad. All band members are alive and well.... God forbid if one of them passed way the rest would see how petty their musical differences were.
It's very easy, don't show up to the next "reunion" shows and you'll see how quickly a new album appears.
Just play dreaming in its entirety and all will be forgiven
Just release 174
Too bad, they are so good making music together.
why yall didn't realize it yet. Daron makes Scars on Broadway is a sign that SOAD will never comeback for new stuff, and john make these grey men too. i expect nothing from an old dude who's not interested in making (band) music like they used to.
I'm still fine cause Daron and Serj "still" make solo albums, sometimes...
Rich people are so insightful
