There are a LOT of surprises in America! This is the most affordable place in the country, and you didn't even know about it I bet.
In this episode, I visited Milwaukee, Wisconsin to show you what it's like to live there. I explored the ghettos and the fun things, and well, this just might be my new favorite place to live in the country.

How is milkwakee the "best" city in the midwest? Especially a place known for having a drinking problem and has experienced decline?
Honestly, being from Memphis originally, Milwaukee's hoods look like some of the better kept neighborhoods in Memphis. It doesn't really look that bad there. Of course, once you've seen Detroit and Memphis, everything looks pristine.
And Wisconsin looks pretty cool, regardless. Wisconsin is friendly and inviting. It's like Minnesota's drunk cousin. 😄
I was born and raised in milwaukke and it definitely dosent have the blight like detroit/baltimore/Cleveland. Milwaukee hasn't lost much of its population from its peak in comparison to other cities.
It does have some rough inner city areas though
Downtown Detroit is nicer by 1000% than any of the places you just mentioned. Stop pretending youve been here because you haven't.
😂😂😂😂
Grew up in California and it’s true the hoods in California makes Milwaukee hoods look livable.
Funny seeing Coors Light, "Born In The Rockies", being made in Milwaukee.
It's Miller-Coors now.
Yep pure mountain spring water right?? It used to be brewed only in Golden.
Its all contract brewing.
Absolutely honored you loved it here so much Nick! Hope you come back soon!
Shit I am black, and I live in Pennsylvania and i wouldn't want to live in Milwaukee'' YOU GO MAPPY."
Don't get it twisted, Milwaukee had the 4th highest murder rate in the U.S. sandwiched between Detroit & Atlanta, and we only have roughly 600,000 people
At just 2:10 in to the video, he was already showing signs of being drunk. Milwaukee is one of my favorite big cities in America. I have a great time every time I visit. I drink a lot.
So sorry you drink a lot just saying been a RN and seeing liver damage not a pretty sight be careful!,
For regular working people those new apartments are not affordable at all. Even the ghetto is becoming unaffordable.
I do not think Nick saw MKE and the horrible car thefts and crazy driving.
Hell, I don't know how people afford 5000 a month downtown
He was here on a few good chill days where it seemed low key
Milwaukee is a very affordable city. Apartments downtown can go for ~$2000-2500, I think.
@@ThaSchwab that's not affordable when you look at how little jobs pay around here. Not sure how someone is suposed to pay 2k for an apartment when they're only making 10 to 12 bucks an hour.
There are multiple festivals happening every weekend for 4 months when it's warm. That's why Milwaukee is awesome.
I went back to Wisconsin a few years ago. I used to live there a long time ago. My family and I went to a very small town up north and went out to eat on a Saturday about noon. It was the restaurant/ bar/ bowling alley. It was the only place for miles and miles. The bar part was packed not one place to sit and the restaurant part was dead empty not one person in there. I said oh yeah I remember Wisconsin now.
Great video! Born and raised in Milwaukee and can tell you it's even better in the summer. So much to do and not enough time! Thanks for stopping by and pointing out the positive things here.
Couldn't agree more!
The Kia Boys were born in Milwaukee too unfortunately.
@@glennso47 probably born in Chicago and came up 🤫
Moved here two years ago from Dallas and I will never move back to Texas. Love the people here. Milwaukee definitely has big town activities with small town vibes and no traffic comparatively speaking. Plus we get all four seasons.
That's awesome bro , thanks for the props of Milwaukee, glad you enjoy it here
Traffic is horrible compared to 10 years ago. Still not bad
I live in Dallas and I would love to move up North just to get away from the heat!! But I can’t because I’m elderly and have several health issues and also my kids and grandkids are close by.
@@peggyowen3386 , it is beautiful here in Wisconsin, bring the family 😊 the only thing here is the winters , but they have been getting pretty warm the last few years
I have alot of family in Wisconsin but I just can't see leaving good summer weather for living in freezing cold months out of the year
Thanks for the awesome video! I get so homesick down here in Houston. I never knew about the tree memorials.
I'm happy to hear you're having such a good time in our state! That 70s Show was set in Wisconsin, too!
Happy you liked my home city! Check out The Rave next time you're in town.
And Fiserv Forum and the Deer District! The architecture of the Art Museum with the lake as a backdrop is amazing if he doesn't have time to go inside.
You are not lying about the winter this year, the midwest had a very mild winter, i think we only got snow like twice, not even a single big snow storm this year.
Only had 1 week of brutally cold temperatures, usually we get at least 3-4 accumulative weeks of sub 20 degree days.
That's the rust belt your states should be called mideast, us plain states have even milder weather and have very little in common with the rust belt look
You must live in the more southern part of the state because we had a couple big storms
Chicago had an extremely mild Winter this season.
I'm from Duluth Minnesota. One day a bunch of us decided to take a road trip to Milwaukee, we weren't in Milwaukee for 5 minutes and we were getting pulled over by the police. The police officer told us he wasn't pulling us over for anything wrong but he told us he was going to escort us out of the neighborhood we were in and bring us to a better part of the city because there was a gang war going on. He told us to follow him. He said if we didn't we wouldn't get through the next two blocks without getting shot. He told us we were all white people driving a nice car so we better do what he said. Believe me we did exactly what he said. 😅
i dont believe this
Great Video Nick, My Mom Was Born There On A Huge Farm, It's Funny She moved to Illinois and had 5 kids, Then I heard When You Said Milwaukee complain about the Illinois moving in was Hilarious! Truly is A Great Looking Town!
You're Right!
happy days and Laverne and Shirly, love it!
In the US, There are a lot of second tier cities that are getting love because of how much the first tier cities have gone to shit.
NYC, Philly are trash, Boston is still actually pretty good, in terms of the northeast at least.
Milwaukee is turning into a trash blue city like all the rest though, I’m on the north side near Good Hope and Sherman and trust me it’s trash
@Patriot-nz5lz I recently went to Boston and had a nice time. Actually felt safe walking the streets, lots to do, and the food is amazing.
@@jrw558 yes boston is actually still pretty safe for the most part, despite having an awful mayor among other problems. For the moment it is still a pretty good city.

Summer fest is awesome!! Gotta go if you haven't 4 the of July weekend!
drinking miller high life for 40+ years now and been on that miller tour many times and first time i was 12 with my parents!!was always great tour and great beer!!!
🍺
Miller is good Draft or in a can. But tastes like dirty socks in a bottle. Anyone knowing beer knows the hops are skunked by sunlight in clear bottles. Same goes for Corona and others.
I used to drink Miller when I was broke. Then I made some $ and haven't drank that watery stuff in years but I would still like to visit the brewery. I did visit the New Glarus brewery my last time in Wisconsin. I wish they sold that beer in my state!
@@justadjimmi6613 Much better visiting a small micro craft brewery. It is something about any one can do producing 5 to 50 gallons at a time. Craft breweries will usually even provide grains and yeast to help you start. Just not the formula for their beers. For that you experiment. Live yeast and whole hops are much better than dry yeast and processed hops.
@@justadjimmi6613 I'm sorry, did somebody ask your opinion???um,nooooo.get lost!!😆😆
The best bars are in Bayview and West Allis .. Just my opinion.
Love the architecture some great buildings and homes thanks😊
I just re-watched this video. Since you like Milwaukee, you need to come back and go to a Milwaukee staple…The Safe House on Front Street with the secret spinning booth. I discovered how this booth works one night by accident where the secret booth originates and takes you on a track from one business (I can’t say which one because it’s a secret😮) to The Safe House where the booth doors open up and deliver you on the dance floor of The Safe House in true Mke style with flashing lights and sirens. It was hands down the coolest experience I’ve had I think ever! Once inside The Safe House, I think you’d like exploring all the secrets and surprises it holds.
Duuuuuuude you have two ‘uge fans here!!!
How uge?
@@NickJohnsonBIGLY. We’ll take you and Mappy out for beers next time!
I got lost in Milwaukee coming home from the VA accidentally took 41 north which is how we used to go home from Milwaukee as a kid . I realized I was lost and stopped at a store i realized also I was somewhere I shouldn’t be .. fortunately a very nice young African American lady gave me directions then said on second thought let me take you out of here as you will be going through even worse areas and being with someone black will help you even if we are in different cars.. She got me out of there ..I wished I had her name to thank her properly You forgot to mention UW Milwaukee.. you missed staying at the Pfister
Pfister sucks
A LOT, in fact MOST, of the Blacks in Milwaukee are SOLID citizens. Good to be around. Nice homes. Pay their bills. Work their work. The VERY few who cause all the trouble are young kids who are out to prove something. Unfortunately, many of them make enemies in the hood and wind up dead at very young ages.
@@NickJohnson you must not have had a good room we had a suite it was awesome but that was several years ago already

Nice video Nick glad you still exploring out cities haha nice you had a beer in Milwaukee.
Nick- awesome post on Milwaukee (which is Algonquin for "the good land"- LOL- quote from Alice Cooper in Wayne's Word) I live in Cedarburg but work in Milwaukee -(your drone shot by the power plant with the 2 smokestacks is where I work). You most likely took it from our parking lot- MILSCO MFG. we are going on 100 year anniversary this year, and make seats for Harley Davidson, John Deere, Case, etc. See a Harley- we made/make that seat. See a lawn tractor we make that seat- in fact our company did the first padded tractor seat. You were right there buddy!!! Loved and enjoyed the vid!!!
I was not aware of that.
Milwaukee looks great but I rather live in the safer part of it
Glad to hear that Milwaukee is one city in America doing well.
I moved from Milwaukee to Colorado. In Colorado we get "Buffed and fit" and in Milwaukee they get "Stuffed and lit" Glad you experienced it.
you rather be fat?
Nick, you did a GREAT job on this video! I was born and raised in the burbs here and I have always loved Milwaukee. When I was growing up in the 60's and the 70's we had so much fun ...a big deal to "go into Milwaukee". It was a great place to grow up! I hope you will come back some time, maybe in the summer. Are you going anywhere else in WI? I was kind of hoping you would visit Madison as you may find that city very interesting and unique. If you didn't do it this trip, I hope you will come back and visit Madison then. Anyway, thanks for truly capturing our little neck of the woods! Safe travels to you...
Madison next.

It is!
I don't drink, but I grew up in beer town. I did all right. Welcome to my home town.
Milwaukee is magnificent
Milwaukee really has some huge old homes.
Thanks Nick for interesting video. I grew up in the Twin Cities. Visited MW once for a Marquette BB game and some Miller beer while in college at Duluth many moons ago. I moved south in the late 80’s. Btw - you need to visit towns in MN sometime. Keep it rollin’ 👍
Picked up a beer to sit on my patio, clicked on UA-cam, and this came up. Great timing. Milwaukee is a great city to visit in the summer, lots of festivals.
I love how Nick has become da hood whisperer
WOW! Charm is putting it mildly....wonder how much a room to rent would be in a MANSION! Drone shots are perfect...
Excellent video Nick! I'm glad you enjoyed my home town. Milwaukee is a tale of two cities. The Eastside/Downtown are incredible. The North/Northwest side are a whole different story. Milwaukee hoods in the summer are terrible. I am surprised you didn't cover Deer District so now you have to come back. You didn't mention The Milwaukee Bucks that's blasphemy in Milwaukee. 🤣🤣As they say in the South Milwaukee is a wet city, plenty of alcohol. People here are extremely friendly. Stay out of the hood in the Summer! Yikes! One of our neighborhoods got voted the most dangerous in the country. If you love Milwaukee you have to come for Summerfest. 🥳
Love it! ❤️❤️
Being a Milwaukee native, and yes, now in the 'burbs", I was impressed by your honest assessment of both the good and the bad. Obviously, winter is not the most aesthetically pleasing video-wise, but again, you're accurate. Really enjoyed the Green Bay video as well.
Welfare in Illinois is higher and easier to get than in Wisconsin
I’ve only driven through, but I really like the vibe of the old buildings.
Hey Nick hope you two are doing well. Yes when we toured the beer plants there, omg they give you a lot to taste lol SHOW US THE HOOD NICK!!! WE ALL NEED OUR FIX!! LMFAO That Biden/Harris sign in front of the burned out house says it all. Both are similar a house fire and a dumpster fire.
We don’t drink in Milwaukee it’s for the tourist 😅thanks for making a awesome video on my city
Fast fact: I was there when they revealed the Bronze Fonz statue. A lot of original cast members were there as well. Anyway, when they were taking pictures of Henry Winkler standing next to it (he is really a tiny man in person) someone pointed out to him (which he then announced on the mic) that the veins in the backs of his hands are "HW" and "SW", which are his and his wife's initials.
Also, a lot of people around here think it looks more like the Joker than the Fonz.
No one ever goes to the near Southside, between National Ave, South to Oklahoma and up to 43rd St.
I fear no beer!
Clydesdales; I always wondered about their stables.
Beer Wagon horses were also kept at a farm just North of Milwaukee, along the lake. It's now an Audubon Sanctuary.
YOu're not thinking of the Budweiser Clydesdales, are you?
@@janetlauer8382 The very same!
@@upyorkstate5541 The Budweiser Clydesdale are in St. Louis, MO. and are mascots of Anheuheiser-Busch...We, Milwaukee, used to have team of horses that pulled beer wagons at our parades but I haven't seen them in years. I know many years ago, a team was spooked at a parade downtown and ran into a crowd of people. I haven't seen them since so I wonder if that had anything to do with them disappearing.
Shame on that popular youtuber for standing you up. I learned so much! I don't drink, but I sure enjoyed watching this from my hot bubble bath! 👍
If you go to Milwaukee and don’t try a Ned’s pizza you’re really missing something!
I really enjoy your channel. With this video, you really came out of your shell. I live in a Boston suburb (an hour north) Newburyport, which is actually a city but acts like a town. Everyone knows each other. It is an old historic seaport town where ships were made and textiles sold. I wasn't born here but have seen pictures of the boarded up windows in our downtown in the 1970's. Nobody wanted to live here. Now the avg house is $1M.
If you visit downtown Boston, it is really beautiful. However, there are parts of Boston that are not safe even during mid-day and they look like @12:33. I'm thinking areas like Dorchester and Mattapan. Both are considered "Boston." but you won't see any pictures of those areas on tourist flyers. (do they still make flyers?)
I remember when Baltimore, MD tried to re-invent themselves. They created "Inner-Harbour" (I added the U to make it classier). It was initially a huge success with shops, restaurants, and condos right on the water, joined by an enormous curvy boardwalk. It was a huge push for MD. However, I believe today, it is no longer new nor quaint. It was beautifully reborn, yet had a painful death. I'm not sure why.
Did Eric, @14:29 own or rent? (not judging, just curious). Behind "Mappy" look at Nick's rotary dial black phone in front of his YT plaque. 😎 BTW, I'm the guy who wears shorts all of the time. I look like I'm either coming or going to the gym. (sorry I keep editing this!). Where did you stay? (if you are allowed to tell us). Bring back the stache!!!!!!!
Do you remember the Family Guy episode where Peter lands in Ireland and the runway is full of beer bottles? lol
There's a lot going on here 👆

Don't forget UW University of Wisconsin.
I went to Milwaukee for a summer research program from California back in 2018. I was part of an NSF research funded program at Marquette university. There were a couple girls from the group that were originally from Wisconsin and would always be too scared to walk through the ghetto and claimed that it was the most segregated City in america. Me being from the bay area of California it always looked so much better then what they made it sound LOL. All in all i fell in love With the city. Tbh id move there if it wasn't so cold
2:50 Donald Trump should use that picture in his campaign.
Property taxes are high, but the amount of Craftsmanship you can buy in a old home in Milwaukee is crazy, they are all over the city too, most neighborhoods have beautiful historic homes in various states of shape
Those old houses are ugly, dilapidated, and located in the dangerous part of town.
Another great documentary of America!

I’ve been to Milwaukee a couple of times and thought it was a cool city, especially the historic area. I think it gets overlooked because it’s so close to Chicago.

Interesting to me that the homes in the bad neighborhoods look just like the homes in Connecticut and also Ohio. I'm curious why the architecture in these separate states are all the same..... homes built around 1910-1920
Massive German influences
They all read the same craftsmen catalogues and ordered from Sears
Those were kit homes sold by Sears, Montgomery Wards and lumberyards. Home builders would buy lots from developers then offer to build a home the buyer wanted from a catalog show by the builder..
Born here, moved to the coasts when I was 19, moved back when I was 40. Milwaukee has so much going for it.. If they can manage to not go batshit lefty.. there is a good chance this city will make it.
It has nothing going for it because of its demographic. Politics have nothing to do with it. People are not moving to Milwaukee because it's cold and dangerous. Property prices in suburbs are high. Most young people are moving out. The city is dead at night.
Grew up in Milwaukee and its by far my favorite Midwestern City. Always love coming back there especially for all the breweries and Beer and German food and the downtown area is really nice.

I live in the SW suburbs , and it’s completely different than city. We have bike trails that run the span of the lake, mountain bike trails, disk golf, water falls, a botanical garden, a ski slope, a minor league ball park , and golf courses. Having moved from NYC and Palm Beach county, it’s so laid back and relaxed. Nature. Chill . And we are 45 mins to Lake Forest. You are right, we are the little bro to Chicago.
