  • The Texas coast has a bad reputation. But I saw some good in Galveston!
I spent two days in Galveston, checking out the neighborhoods and downtown region to see what life is like here. I was impressed!

Just glancing at the video titles……I have friends that live in Austin and some that left because it’s gotten so bad. I live in Houston (been here for 25 years and the crime and craziness has gotten exponentially worse……especially over the last 3 years. Soon we will be splitting our time between East Tennessee and Galveston island. I’m so ready to get out of Houston.

FYI, the water in Galveston for the most part is actually very clean from a microbe standpart. It is however most of the time full of silt from the Brazos and even the Missisippi rivers. SOmetimes though beleive it or not it can be almost gin clear.

My father lived in Galveston for a few decades and told me if you take a boat so far out from the beach that the water is crystal clear, never seen it for myself but want to test that out myself one day.

Grew up in that area and spent a lot of time at the beach. The silt from the Mississippi River is the reason for the murky water. About 100 miles off the coast, there is a coral reef.

Welcome to Galveston Nick. I hope you enjoyed your trip to Galveston. I am living and working in Galveston since November 2021.Indeed, there are not many job opportunities over here. The main one is UTMB. If you are full time employee in UTMB, then you are going to do well. The rent is not expensive as well. I am paying 1200$ for one bedroom apartment 800 sqft (fully furnished), and it is located in the vicinity of the UTMB campus. Galveston is a beautiful city and very clean I have to admit. Compare to other cities in Texas, Galveston is looking good and it is very safe as well. We do have rains over here in Galveston from time to time, and we might have hurricanes as well, although it was very quiet in the past several years. Since i am from south of Florida, I love hot weather that we have over here in Galveston.

Back in the early 90's I had a friend whose parents owned a house on the beach in Gilchrist which is on the Bolivar Peninsula. We drove down there for Spring break when we were high school sophomores. Crystal beach was THE place where all the kids congregated during the day. We were cruising up & down the beach talking to all the bikini clad girls. At night we would build a fire on the beach & just hang out. Other than Crystal beach it was very desolate back then. Nothing to do unless you took the ferry across to Galveston. There were a couple of bars where we went to play pool & shuffleboard. The locals always hung out there in including the town drunks. It was quite hilarious listening to them. Good times.

Yeah we're looking to move from Colorado and that's one of the places we went this past summer. We could have seen ourselves living there but could not get over the humidity. That was definitely the deal breaker for that place.

If you want some very uncrowded coast, you can consider the great lakes as well (in the summer of course)

Ah Galveston! I always think of the movie, "Together Brothers"
that was filmed there in the 70s. Galveston used to be a rough little town

It's good that you went to "The Spot", a nice place along the SeaWall. Bolivar/Crystal Beach is my favorite place, every place I ever rented was wiped out by Hurricane Ike, I nearly bought property there after that. Now I have to wait for the next one.

I've been in The Great Republic of Texas since 2013, and I've only been to Galveston once. Went to a beech just North? East? North/East of the pleasure pier. Parked on the beach, it cost $15 plus convenience fee for using a debit card. I think it came to a little over $17 total. (This was 2022) Went out in the water up past my knee's, the water was like a bath, very warm. I had been told how dirty the water was, that you can't even see your feet. I was surprised when I looked down, and COULD see my feet. I've been on beaches in CA, and FL, and the water wasn't that clear. The only unnerving thing was, there are clams under the sand, and if you stand in one place too long in the water, you can feel them moving around and feel your feet sink in the sand. I had to keep moving my feet. Lol. Didn't know what it was at first, so I dug down with my hand, scoped up a handful of sand, and saw all the little clams. I loved the place, wanted to move there, until I watched this video. I'm an independent contractor, an hour north of Houston. After hearing what the rent is like there, I think I'll skip out on moving to Galveston. Lol.

When I want to know what a city in America is REALLY like, I fire up me some Nick Johnson. I just have zero interest in hearing anyones opinion other than Nicks. Annnnd, its entertaining as well. No one else is doing this, this well. Only Nick.

To me as a European, American cities look terribly faceless. If I walk a few meters here in my small village, I come to an atonement cross that is 800 years old. The village itself is 1200 years old. I miss that a little in the USA. Nothing has a longer tradition. But I don't want to complain. I learned more about the USA on this channel than in my previous 63 years of life. Nick Johnson has turned a notorious hater of America into an interested observer of American conditions, close to ordinary Americans. And that's good!

North Texas weather is extreme when compared to California. It gets blazing hot 24/7 during the Summer with little to no rain until a front comes thru to drop the monthly average in 60 minutes. The winter weather occurs in one to two week stretches like Winter storm Urine. It can be 60 during the day then start cooling off at sundown to be 12 degrees by daybreak. Everything shuts down if it snows since none of the cities or counties own snowplows. We do have tornadoes throughout the year.

True. It’s The Plains & even if it is more in the southern latitudes, there’s nothing to stop northerly frigid blasts, like mountain ranges or ocean.

I spent many long days in Galveston wade fishing the shorelines of east and west bat, as well as Christmas bay. I fished there before the island was widely developed. The fishing back then was first class. Over the years, the fishing wasn't as good. Too much pressure. When I used to go wade fishing, I could wade all day and never see another fisherman. Rarely failed to catch limits.
And about the water quality. It's sandy in the summer. But if you come in the winter, the water is clear as can be. I've seen the beach front with jade green clear water. I've also seen phytoplankton so dense that any disturbance of the water at all triggers sparkling green luminescent plankton. Beautiful.

The bums in Galveston have been there my entire life. Like many coastal communities around the world, good weather makes sleeping rough doable.
