- The Waterboys - Fisherman's Blues (Video ReMake) (1986) (HD)
First thing to say is, while the Waterboys were/ are one of the best live bands of all time and can't be faulted on their live performances, then reason for this video is quite simple really...
As a big fan of theirs I always found it sad that they didn't do many actual promo videos for their songs (they always preferred doing things live). Problem with that is there has never really been any videos to go with the studio recorded versions of their tracks which as you can probably gather from the videos on this channel is a big thing for me...
So here's a wee video I cobbled together taking one of their live performances and re-doing it to fit the studio recorded version of the song... :-)
It's The Waterboys & one of my favourites "Fisherman's Blues" from 1986... :-)
Cleaned Up, Sharpened Up, Re-Edited and ReDubbed with the crisp clean studio recorded audio track... enjoy... :-)
PS: In case anyone is wanting to know the footage is from a live performance they did on the 80's UK TV show "The Tube"...

If this isn’t my funeral song, I’m not going
That wee gem of a comment is one of those rare ones that makes me laugh out loud and have some hope that there are still some people out there in internetland who still have a good sense humour and don't take this strange thing we call "life" too seriously... 😄
Clever !
Αν και δεν θα καταλάβεις τι θέλω να πω ... Έγραψες!! 👍
As keen fisherman all my life Ive always said I want this song played at my funeral
@@basilisbalamotis1338 I do understand because of the Google translator 😂 I wrote and here we are!!
I have a story about this album and this song specifically. I once travelled to a tiny northern Pacific isle, with a population of about 100, and accidently left this CD in the bar there. I returned for a visit two years later to find the CD in constant play in the bar as the "house band", with people singing along to the lyrics. This song was everyone's favorite. I believe I changed culture for the good.....😄😄
That is absolutely brilliant! Now I need to know what island, please. I have travelled to the Solomon Islands...
What a bloody great story x❤
Didn't change the culture just echoed what was already there... and even if it didnt the story is made up, the power of this song makes it so easily believable.
If the story is true then, bask in the enjoyment of exposing something already beautiful to more beauty.
I hope you got something back.
@@janmcintyre8595Hi Jan did you find out which island it was Greetings from fellow Scot👌🏴
No, I didn't find out the name of the island, but that's ok.
Sorry, I'm not a Scot. My surname is Irish, from my Australian late husband. I'm English though - a "dirty sassenach", my Scottish friend called me!
“If you give a man a fish, you feed him for a day. If you teach a man about The Waterboys' Fisherman's Blue, you'll feed his musical soul for a lifetime.”
thats true!!"!!! amen!
Ur right, my brother saw them as a support act at Ibrox in Glasgow in 1986, and he said they were brilliant, just a tad jealous i wasn't there 😢
Love it
RIP Karl ! Awesome job you did in this world and for Music !!
I am going to see the Waterboys for the first time tonight 2024
Still so fucking good in 2024! Smile on my face every time I hear or play it... Thank you Mike!
One of the best songs ever made. Waterboys thank you! ❤
The violin player deserves a statue, absolutely brilliant!
March 11 2024: Another true musical genius gone too soon, it was just announced that the multi talented musician, songwriter and producer Karl Wallinger has passed away aged just 66. Karl was a very important part of The Waterboys before he went out on his own to become "World Party", rest in piece sir and thank you for being a very important & influential part of British music history...
I so played this to my dad we both sung this song.I played this at his funeral rest dad I miss you ❤
❤❤❤🙏🙏🙏
I can't describe how much I love this song
These guys look like something out of Oliver Twist.. I'm 63 now and whenever I hear this beautiful song I feel like a seagull soaring across the ocean.
My favorite version of a favorite song. I'm 4 months older than Mike, and when I'm feeling down, I grab my guitar and play this...and reminisce on those carefree days of my youth. 🥲
I wanna live in this song for the rest of my life. How I feel when I listen to it is how I want to feel for the rest of my days
I totally get what you're saying.
However there's to much pain in my opinion.
But if I could live it with the singer, I'd jump right in as we speak.
He's so beautiful! And he gives his whole soul during his song, witch is very rare these days.
No one makes music like this anymore.
The very brink of powerful and not overpowering. Right at the edge, perfect.
I can’t even express what this album has meant to me.
If you are an artist who feels unloved, remember that you will never know what your work will mean to people down the line.
Courage and love to you. Keep making art!
I wish I was a fisherman
Tumblin' on the seas
Far away from dry land
And its bitter memories
Casting out my sweet line
With abandonment and love
No ceiling bearin' down on me
Save the starry sky above
With light in my head
You in my arms
Woo!
I wish I was the brakeman
On a hurtlin' fevered train
Crashing a-headlong into the heartland
Like a cannon in the rain
With the beating of the sleepers
And the burnin' of the coal
Counting the towns flashing by
In a night that's full of soul
With light in my head
You in my arms
Woo!
Tomorrow I will be loosened
From bonds that hold me fast
That the chains all hung around me
Will fall away at last
And on that fine and fateful day
I will take thee in my hands
I will ride on the train
I will be the fisherman
With light in my head
You in my arms
Light in my head
You in my arms
🙏
Thank you! Perfect timing.
I always thought the third verse began with "I know I will be loosened" Are you sure?
@@robertrinaldi8748 I know the lyric he have written is right. Cheers 😃
@@robertrinaldi8748 You are indeed correct "I know I will be loosened" are in in fact the correct lyrics being sung... :-)
I've always felt this song more of an early 70s' thing rather than 80s'. An absolute gem.
Mike’s hair should have a following!
Love this song
It takes me to another place and time
Freedom
I come to this after listening to The Whole of The Moon on the radio this morning. I hadn't even thought of The Waterboys in forever. They produced some beautiful and memorable tunes with equally striking lyrics.
i freekin' love this song.....best rendition I've seen....it's got love, bitterness and humor...these guys were so great in that moment....I was a fisherman when i met my beloved...she put this on.
She's on the other side now, but she's still with me.
i love it too
Every single person on that stage just delivering it for everyone.
Yeah. It’s a shame they were just miming.
@@benjohnson5501it was live, this has been overdubbed. The live version is on UA-cam elsewhere and is better
RIP Karl Wallinger. Thank you for the music
Played this to my babies - now grown women and still loving this fab band❤️🥰
What a fucking band these are what a voice what a sound wow wooo
One of my absolute favourite bands...of any genre. Fabulous music.
The BEST song by the Waterboys
Oh...thats a very cheeky statement.....they have so many good songs!😊
One of the best,Waterboys have a bunch of great songs.
I wish they still wrote songs like this. Timeless classic! 🏆
Just curious but.... why do people often repeat what the person who posted just before them or just recently the same comment ???
in this case "Timeless classic" !!!
Never quite figured out why some people do that !!! 🤔
The late Great Karl Wallinger is all over this fabulous song...RIP you beautiful soul ❤. ...
Fantastic. Makes me feel young again. A song to sing and dance to in a pub! Years before...
Some songs, when first heard, it just hits you on the right spot. This song was one of them.. Cheers fellas..
If this track hits the right spot for you then you should give the full album a listen (which is also called "Fishermans Blues) as to me every track on that amazing album hit's the right spot straight from when you first hear them... :-)
What a fantastic voice and what a gorgeous song. Makes me so happy.
Timeless!
Just found out about this band. This song was the ending music for Season 7 Episode 3 of Ray Donovan. Had to look it up. Love it!!!
What a wasted years. I hope now you could make it up to it?!? Never too late, mate!
I first heard them in the ending of an episode of Republic of Doyle. Also had to look them up. Love it!!!!
That's exactly what I did!!!! Immediately pulled my phone out to identify the recording
Until tonight our only experience with this lovely piece was at the ending of the terrific film, "Waking Ned Devine." Tonight is was included in the ending of "Fisherman's Friends"... another decent film.
Similar in charming with Ned Devine are
1. The Dish
2. Local Hero
3. The Commitments
Isn't it amazing. Kids watching stranger things are now listening to Kate bush.
I worked on the ocean for 30 years , 20 of them I was commercial fishing, love this song.
Excellent band
"Tumblin' on the Seas"... Cheers to all of ya! Cheers to the Waterboys!
Cheers for one of the best groups I know.
Incredible tune. BeautIful.
We played this at my brother’s funeral Thankyou 🥰
If this song was your late brother's request,he had great taste in music. RIP to your extremely cool brother.
Went on vacation to Ireland this summer with my dad. Couldn't escape this song in the pubs. Lovely song though and full of memories now.

What a truly astonishing song!!! Gets better everytime you hear it!!
Quite possibly one of the greatest songs ever written ❤ !!! Thank you for sharing this.
You're welcome glad you enjoyed it, been saying the same myself about this song for well over 30 year now, finding it strange though that it's only recently that apparently a lot of folk are just discovering it, not sure why but I'm glad they are... 🙂
This is magic. Saw them in 1987 or 1988 in Wales, UK. One of the best bands I've seen live @@MadFranko008

@@Vikingqueen418 You're right. There are many great songs, and this is wonderful and really uplifting. And brilliantly sung by the writer in his very unique voice and style.
I was just thinking that any day I don't listen to this at least once I am doing myself an injustice.
I know! It's so much more than a song. The imagery it creates and the feeling of it. Unbelievable.
2021 still watching..

2022 still........... :-)
My favourite song ever, reminds me of our trips to Portugal back in the 90ies, no rules but humanity, the road before us and a good wind!
"Light in my head, you in my arms". First love memories. Can't be better.
Waterboys completely overlooked in US.
What do the yanks know about music
Awesome tune, gets my Irish / Celtic spirit up and jigging !
They are Scottish
It's been used in the movies Goodwill Hunting, Waking Ned Devine, and Dom Hemingway. Great song!
Didn't know that. Thank you
My absolute favorite song. Doesn't get better than this!! Wooo hoo hoo!
Another wonderful song! the music in the 80's had class and true beauty unlike mainstream music today which is vulgar and just low....
Great song! Many many memories....
Love this song
I heard this song for the first time just some months ago.
I totally fell in love!
Each time he says uuh I get goosebumps all over my body.
He puts his freaking soul into this song, what an outstanding performance.
I was absolutely ecstatic because I was wondering what band had made such music these days.
I don't know where my head was, obviously it had to be an old song because no one makes music like this anymore.
I saw the band for the first time now and the singer is absolutely gorgeous, just as beautiful as he sings 😍
I hear this song for the first time probably 30 years ago and it blew my mind. It took me about 20 years to find out the name of the band and song. I was in a car with a friend and they played it on the radio. When the dj said the name I bursted into tears. Never stopped listening it since then.
Oh, what a great story!
But that's sad that you missed out twenty years of this song!
I've been missing out 30 though but I didn't know what I was missing.
I heard it for the first time on Tuesday this week when someone covered it at a local open mic night. I’m obsessed!
Could anyone possibly not love this
this is pure poetry …..tumbling out his mouth ……barrelllin down the microphone a true magician who when it comes to singing his lyrics is up there with the very best…..
Bon Journee Karl. I hope your time here was good here. You made so many moments for all of us. Not so many get to be the soundtrack of people's lives, the things that made us laugh, that made us cry. We fell in love, we fell out of love, we made all the wrong decisions and here we are, "light in my head, you in my arms." The words of my youth.
I was in kildare southern Ireland and these were playing this in a small pub with 30 people we caught the last 15 min
I first heard this Song when I saw Good Will Hunting in the theater. I immediately went out to get the soundtrack.
I still love this song today as much as I did the first time I heard it in 1997
It gives me a feeling that is hard to explain. I play it every chance I get.
Side note: (The Goodwill Hunting Soundtrack is one of the greatest Soundtracks Ever)
Try "The Girl next door" 's soundtrack. Please!🇮🇪☘️🇮🇪 Happy St.Patrick's.
Saw them in 2021 and still here only a few months later on 2022… so underrated and yet so mind blowing! (And thanks to Steve Wickham.. I purchased a fiddle and am horrendous at it 😭😂)
If you want to learn fiddle get a mandolin too.....same tuning.....GDAE.....Enjoy..!!
Cheers for this - that album (Fisherman's Blues) is absolutely great and a memory of the late eighties. I still listen to this 30 odd years later. And from The Tube: a much missed show.
@ Harry May: You're welcome mate, Two album that have been a staple diet of my listening for the past 3 decades "This Is The Sea" & "Fisherman's Blues", played back to back is a great way to chill out and drift away on the great images they conjure up... :-)
Yep, The Tube was a groundbreaking show back in the day and a great way to kick off a Friday night before heading off down the pub... :-)
The lead singer and Hughie Purcell busked from Ireland to Greece one summer when they were young. Great video!!
Incredible music.. been listening to them since 1986.. I was 20 years old and heard this song on the Hope college station.. been a fan ever since
The same here , and just love this band more and more 👍

Cheers David, glad you enjoyed it... 😊
Waterboys amazing good music always stays in fashion never fades monsters on a world stage with there unique sound pure classic 2022 you would think just came out 🎸🎸🎸
While I get that you enjoy The Waterboys then I have to disagree with you about this being a "pure classic 2022" sound and that it sounds like it could have "just came" out...
Sadly in 2022 great music and talent like this a a thing of the past, there's almost no one around these days who can or do write and perform great music like this...
Tis indeed a classic of the 80's but nothing (unfortunately) in the bland same sounding manufactured music industry of today can hold a candle to music like this...
It's certainly not anything like the music of 2022 or anything else there has been since around the start of the 90's when great music and talented bands/ artists & songwriters slowly became extinct...
That's my take on it, nothing more, nothing less... 😉

Fantastic and even that word underscores the magnitude of this performance along with the depth of this old tune.
Old tune? It's from the late 80's.
@@robertrinaldi8748 and that is considered old, you little worthless troll. in fact, 25+ years is considered classic now beat it, kid.
@@SonnyBlaze A couple of points here ...
1) What someone considers as being "old" in this case very much depends on their age...
and
2) There's no such thing as "trolls" !!! they are fictional beings from little kiddies fairy tales and stories and therefore they don't (can't) actually roam the interwebs communicating with you...
So from your reply to the other person here who's opinion on what is "old" differs from your opinion (and that all it is... an opinion) then it would be fair to conclude from your childish reply to them that your mental age must something akin to that of a three year old...
Now beat it my narky little baby, as it's clearly way past your next bottle feed and beddy byes time...
PS: Come back when you've grown up (old) and can understand what the definition of the word "old" really means... ;-)
Fabulous Song, more power to you guys
A magnificent song from the 80s! It's a belter!
Oooh, a real nostalgia fest, here. Was already a big fan of the Waterboys when this album came out. Saw them play live several times. Very happy carefree memories of that period. Stunning band, live!
Masterpiece song ♥️
Worked cash and hand and rough in Helensbourgh ? Near glasgow . Fell into a group (the english girl who didn't get it ) was paired with me .We had some epic times , some minor anti social times and unmatched friendships. We walked like lions and the Waterboys was our soundtrack. Thanks from Texas !
Glasgow a blur and usually involved kind authorities who guided us back from the brink and mystic cabbies who could all help reunite ..... The cab played hindi stuff
Born and bred in Glasgow (the Gorbals ) and way back in the 70's me and my mate Wullie would often travel on our bikes to Helensburgh to go fishing. Always seemed a very quite and posh place to us (mind you anywhere outside the Gorbals always seemed quiet and posh). About the nearest thing we ever saw to being "anti social" there was two auld biddies arguing (rather polity I might add) over the tie Ted Heath had apparently been wearing on a party political broadcast the night before... 😄
PS: Texas... now that's a long way from Helensburgh... must've cost a fair bit for that taxi ride... 😉
@@MadFranko008 Got overly active in building a bonfire at party once , my buddy from there like steal flags , dunno nothing too bad it was 86 .. very true that cab ride is improbable just saying the good people of Glasgow always got us home
