I don't like when people say they like the water boys version better than Ellie Gouldings version, the water boys didn't do a version of this song, they did the original,
As an Irish person, it slightly thrills me to think that Sinead's song that same year (not really her's, but she made it her own because she is one in a billion), was about Mike Scott. Truly, nothing compares to that voice, those lyrics, the pause, the gentleness, the love. And sadness. Love always touches our lips with a poisoned chalice. Not in the love itself. But in the loss.
24 years since the brilliant original and it takes a "superstar" to kill it till it's brought to the public. Waterboys aren't a whole of the moon one hit wonder. One of the best live bands ever.
I had the pleasure of seeing them at the famous Glasgow barrowlands in 2001 an it was sublime .....Mike Scott is a genius song writer.....unbelievably underrated.....but hey this music should only be appreciated by people who really understand the the power and beauty of real music an musicians....not everyone truly feels this...
My other half used to like Ellie's version. She went to Australia for a month and I sent her this, telling her she needed to hear the proper version. Now she can't hear Mike's original without weeping. Such an amazing song.

I always liked the boys but never bought a waterboys record, my older sister did, she gor me into them in the 80's. Couple of years ago started to root around online for their music and found this song. Obviously fell in love. Went to see them in iveagh gardens in dublin this year and was terrified (to my shame) that they may have been past a big performance..and to my shame again they were absolutely brilliant. Just bought 4 tickets for belfast next year and cant wait. Genius isnt strong enough a word to describe Mike
Ellie does a great job with this song; to be fair, she is a very grounded musician. But the original has something different and special, just like this band. Real meaning. Beautiful .

Only a man could write lyrics like this. I knew Ellie Goulding didn't write this. I knew I heard it before. It takes a man totally in love to write the most heart felt songs. I was asked when I was writing music about 4 months before I broke up with my daughter's mom to write a song for her and for diamonds I couldn't write anything sincere. I knew then she was trouble but I didn't know how much. I trusted this girl with my life. I have written hundreds of songs and poems and not one of them are based on her. I knew something was up. Go with your gut. I learned too late and had a child from an absolute troublesome girl. When she becomes a woman who is mature I'll address her as a woman then. I honestly wish I had my daughter from a good person. I adore you little princess. I hope to see you get bigger and actually understand how much pain your mom put me through and still is sick or not.
