I scored this album on original vinyl a few years back & put it at the back of my collection never played. Picked it up last week, played it and immediately gave myself an uppercut. Where have I been for the last 40 years. One of the best bands I've ever heard. I'm now in an immediate search for everything Waterboys. It's now at the front of my collection 2000+ albums.
I grew up listening to them.My brother bought me the first 2 albums and I bought this when it first came out.I was 15. Magical. Though I do think this album was a bit trebly.Haha
Sublime artistic/spiritual vision of Mike Sott, combined with consummate musicianship and production values. Result.....a timeless classic , akin to Van Morrison's 'Astral Weeks'.
My first girlfriend in college put this song on a mixed tape for me and I always took it as a great compliment even though there is the too far too soon thing (definitely true)...she was saying I saw the Big Picture naturally, without having to try....this song always gets me....and Medicine Bow...and This Is The Sea...the whole friggin' album. Masterpiece. Better than Room To Roam I'd say.
1. Don't Bang the Drum, 2. The Whole Of The Moon, 3. Spirit, 4. The Pan Within, 5. Medicine Bow, 6. Old England, 7. Be My Enemy, 8. Trumpets, 9. This Is The Sea "This is the Sea" has lifted me up and motivated me so many times! And The Whole Of The Moon reminds me that I want to know the Whole Of The moon, so don't give up - keep seeking. But I love this band because there's something for everyone.
@Imix Muan Agree 100%. A Pagan Place is not as polished as This is the Sea but it's right up there with it in terms of excellence. After This is the Sea, Mike's celtic journey simply reduced the quality of the music they made; although they did come up with the odd very good song now and again.
Hi,thanks for your, i wasn't quoting the lyrics, people are so wrapped up in their own minds, they don't realise that the spirit and the man are one and the same.
I didn't know them in the '80's. I "discovered" them working in a music store in 2002 (roughly) when Mandy Moore covered "Whole of the Moon." She did ok with her version so I looked up the original and special ordered the "Whole of the Moon" compilation greatest hits by Mike Scott and the Waterboys and it is loaded with great songs! I think I like 4 or 5 other songs even more than "Whole of the Moon. I love it when that happens. Thanks Mandy!🤪
for me the best álbum by The Waterboys. The others are good too but this is other thing. i hope i can enjoy them next 30th of june in Madrid. best regards for all
Love Mike Scott...the lyrics of Old England are as relevant in 2024 as they were when I saw the Waterboys at Ibrox Park in 1985..best gig ever...they were better than the headliners Simple Minds
The album had seven engineers and five assistant engineers, because it was recorded in eleven different studios between March and July 1985, which makes it even more astounding that the overall sound is so consistent. Produced by Mike Scott and Mick Glossop, if you're interested.
over 66% of water in our bodies.....SO WE ARE ALL WATERBOYS.....we who listen to the BAND are 100% WATERBOY FANS ...oh yeah , I've got their albums from 1983,84,85,88,91 (best of )...93, & 2012 + some of Mike Scotts solo albums,..Bring 'em all in +
Have this great album knew it would sound great had to since the singer’s photo was on cover! Love whole of moon video & live version’s meow!........👍❤️😻🔥
Going back into my childhood Spent At Nazareth House Children's Home Crosby. Sister Anita O' Sullivan Originally From Dublin. Sister Anita Passed While I Was On The Glasgow Royal 2005. When I Woke Up Seven Weeks Later, I Would Always Spend Most Of My Days Sat In The Hospital Chapel. Sister Anita's Body Rests At The Scotland Nazareth House Children's Home. Grounds..Very Specific ?
Good album, but in my opinion the studio versions of these songs are just blue prints for when they come alive and take on a life of their own in the live performances that followed. Glastonbury 1986 performance (available in superb stereo on UA-cam) is just superb and still the best concert performance I've ever witnessed.
I always loved the Waterboys but this 80s sound is horrible. Much too much reverb, gated drums etc. Those were the days and Phil Collins is to blame. Would be a fantastic album with a more " in da face" sound. My favorites still are Fishernan' s blues and Room to roam with a lot irish folk influences.
Heard this Album almost million time Masterpiece Sound relevant for today Spirit, don't bang the drum, the whole of the moon, all of this album one big masterpiece Great they should be U2
this is, in my opinion, one of the best group in the 80 years.I'm listening to them since then ,and i'm thinking they're are more expressive and they are care much more then ever.Love them music and Mike with his philosophy, this music is timeless, will love them till the end

I share the feeling. How could I possibly not know them before? Awesome album!!
I share your Question:" Where have i been for the last 40 years".....Amazing Band and in this time its a dream.
I grew up listening to them.My brother bought me the first 2 albums and I bought this when it first came out.I was 15.
Magical.
Though I do think this album was a bit trebly.Haha
Welcome aboard!
Grew up with them, they are like a second skin favourite skin
One of the best album's ever recorded
Apart from ‘A Pagan Place’?
Amen
Sublime artistic/spiritual vision of Mike Sott, combined with consummate musicianship and production values.
Result.....a timeless classic , akin to Van Morrison's 'Astral Weeks'.
It's definitely up there
Agreed
Don't bang the Drum is a fucking AWESOME opening track!! Best ever???
This is one hell of a fantastic album!!!
Pode crer! Tenho a felicidade de ainda ter o Lp em vynil na coleção na casa dos meus pais. Abraço e saúde
The best sound of the 80's awesome....
Whole of the Moon always one of my favorite songs. If this song and lyrics doesn't move you, you're probably dead.
100% agreement 😁😁
My first girlfriend in college put this song on a mixed tape for me and I always took it as a great compliment even though there is the too far too soon thing (definitely true)...she was saying I saw the Big Picture naturally, without having to try....this song always gets me....and Medicine Bow...and This Is The Sea...the whole friggin' album. Masterpiece. Better than Room To Roam I'd say.
Absolutely my friend. Can't believe I'm 50 nxt year but my teenage years were listening to The Waterboys through my older brothers Cassette Player 😁😁
If this doesn’t move you “Too Close To Heaven” certainly will.
🙏🏼
It's woeful worst track on the album imo...Old England and Pan within are instant classics and by far their best on this album.imo
Waterboys - This is the Sea. Love every track.
1. Don't Bang the Drum, 2. The Whole Of The Moon,
3. Spirit, 4. The Pan Within, 5. Medicine Bow,
6. Old England, 7. Be My Enemy, 8. Trumpets,
9. This Is The Sea
"This is the Sea" has lifted me up and motivated me so many times!
And The Whole Of The Moon reminds me that I want to know the Whole Of The moon, so don't give up - keep seeking.
But I love this band because there's something for everyone.
One of the truly great albums of all time imho - fabulous 🎶🌟

@Imix Muan Agree 100%. A Pagan Place is not as polished as This is the Sea but it's right up there with it in terms of excellence. After This is the Sea, Mike's celtic journey simply reduced the quality of the music they made; although they did come up with the odd very good song now and again.

Agree 100%. When Mike started on his celtic journey, they were never as good. And before anyone says anything, I am definitely not anti-celtic
You're so fortunate to have the chance to see them still, here in the US, we won't have that gift now, as we would have, back in their upswing.
Old England is mine! Crazy dynamics, music tells the pain without lyrics! Fantastic, sparks!!!LOVE IT!
It's "Old England is dying" by the way.
@@ksm5185 of course! Thanks for clarifying!
OMG this is AWESOME!! The Pan Within... Wow! Fisherman's Blues linked me to this great Album!

Love Mike Scott...the lyrics of Old England are as relevant in 2024 as they were when I saw the Waterboys at Ibrox Park in 1985..best gig ever...they were better than the headliners Simple Minds
Chouette de réécouter cette chanson. Je la redécouvre, was 16, elle est toujours aussi belle, et me prend aux tripes.

I was there too exalent gig not forgetting hipsway and in tuna nuna 😅
thank you The Waterboys for the Music, and also thank you engineer for the sounds!👍❤well done good wave!.

Is this from a CD or a Vinyl copy? Sounds great, THANKS!
Great album but the cd version has been produced with terrible sound quality
Seguir componiendo...por favor

Tell me a more sensual and deeply erotic song than "The Pan within". Just try...
You're quite right! I don't dare to try...
