John Doe you're fucking stupid as hell. Game prices do NOT need to be as high as they are for most games, AAA games only cost a lot because companies think throwing money at a game will make it better, vs what small indie devs put out with minimal budget.
What pisses me off about new games and dev laziness is how everything just clips through everything and they don't give a shit. It seems that's every game now.
I agree but you should have seen the combat before. It was literally "left swing, right swing, left swing, right swing." At least now it looks better even if it is left click/right click spam.
More along the lines of, the AI works decently, but the moment server lagg and multiplayer gets introduced it becomes so sluggish it might as well be unresponsive.
i've not played conan before, but that sounds promising right? like they've actually been working on it? maybe their one issue in the combat ai will be fixed eventually? does it seem likely to you?
+Hayden Topping It's not really the combat that's the issue, but the AI being stupid. Like he shows with the spider who can't go down a small cliff. The human AI is slightly better.
I actually love this game! It has so much in it I can get over about some bugs and poor AI. The combat can be truly epic sometimes, some creatures have better AI than others. Thralls AI is also pretty good.. I hope they do some small revisions to some of the creatures, I don't think it would be hard to fix as a lot of the issue is just how slow they react but either way I'm having so much fun in Conan.
2023 first time player and absolutely loving it. Ignore the comments about the new store. Yes that absolutely sucks but you can completely ignore it and have a wonderful time exploring the world. Only play SP and COOP PVE and loving every minute
bin9 if you’ve never watched them watch his worth a buy on Gary’s Incident and recent Call of Duty’s - that’s where Mack is at his angriest/funniest in those vids
To those coming to this review to determine if you want to purchase it beware, the most recent update has added a store similar to fallout 76, with premium currency, FOMO items (limited time stuff in a digital store), and overpriced items(around 10USD for something as simple as a shelf).
Would have been so bitterly ironic to get a YT ad right as he said that. XD I dont see them cuz i use Ad Block Plus for years, but some people don;t for some strange reason.
I never really got why people want an online survival game anyway, it just doesn't work. All it is, is deathmatch with with some base building and annoying status bars. Survival games need to be Singleplayer or Co-op, otherwise its just sandbox pvp, and gets old really fast.
Muffins McGeez caz its fun to play with others ? i played ark for 2k hours on a good pve server with good ppl.. i dont think i wudve had that much fun alone. sometimes its just good to chat with people around a campfire surroded by raptors waiting for ur meat to cook... or go raiding with ur friends and fail miserably and laugh it off
Zach i guess people have choices. i like to play on smaller servr.. like the one i played in had 20 slots.. and all the 11 established people in the server were one big freindly group working together... but yea the pvp servers arr just crap where ppl with no life will dominate u
Survival should/could be all about immersion and interacting with different players/clans. Just like irl back in the primitive days. The diplomacy taking place on your favorite server or the psychological thrill when meeting an unknown party at the other side of the river is what keeps it refreshing every time I boot up a proper survival game. I would say survival is made for multiplayer. Unless you want to only care for hunger and exp bars while building bases. I suggest Minecraft or Don't Starve is where it's at for you.
Totally agree, I love the game cause I like to survive and build cool stuff. If they did a total rehaul on combat and AI this could be amazing but I doubt they will.
This wab was really really good. You expressed everything that's good about the game, and why it's good. It got me really hyped about the game because you managed to show the best the game had to offer. Great footage and great commentary. Then you expressed everything that's bad about the game, and why it's bad. And again you articulated perfectly how fun-ruining the faults are, and with footage that made it crystal clear. You have a unique style where it sounds like we're having a chat at the local pub, but you're still super professional. Love it.
I really wanted to get this game... But I would get it mostly for PVE which as you said is very broken. And after seeing that spider just a second ago I decided against it.
If that means review it again, i hope he does. He already pounded it senseless in the 2015 revisit, he will kill rust with fire this time. Complete garbage, the ever bigger grind introduced for the simplest things, upkeeps and whatever else, runs the shittiest it ever did, 5 minutes to load on an SSD, full of hackers like its always been, seems alot more chinese now, than russians. Shit game, hope he really does revisit, cant wait to see that.
Tripnotik25, I've only got like 200 hours but how is the game that grindy? How is upkeep bad unless you have a huge op base? How does it run so bad for you when they have been optimising the game every update? Genuine questions since I think these are the main improvements the game has gotten.
Good combat and AI in a game is so transparent that it's easy for people to take for granted, and people, even devs, often fail to realize that good AI is often the most complex part of developing a single player game. Even the most experienced and well funded studios have a hard time with it. It's a shame, as I wish it got as much attention in games as the flashy graphics and physics systems.
I was waiting on this review! But I got impatient and bought the game 2 days ago. I actually like it. Yeah combat sucks and the AI is dumb but I play single player. Basically I just enable God Mode, get all my supplies and build stuff. Thats it, just build stuff. It actually is more fun than it sounds. Right now I'm in the middle of building a castle.
I just bought this game on sale exactly for that and with the purge, I shall see what awaits. Ya'll should try Far Cry 5 and build solo ai or multiplayer maps.
Hi Mack, Love your channel but will have to say I disagree on this one - this game is definitely worth a buy! I agree AI isn't the best but will absolutely destroy you if you are not careful and properly equipped for it. What I saw on your vid looked like server desync as well. I experienced that first up, got put off, tried another server and it was hugely better. (no more weird AI behaviour / glitching, hitting you from 30 metres away etc) The design of some of the creatures is damn awesome, the world and setting is literally breathtaking. The combat is definitely no Witcher or Dark Souls but at least its not lock on or a spam fest like it was before. Different kind of weapons do different types of damage and dots, have different swing speeds and hit boxes. Chaining combo's using heavy and light attacks in sequence to achieve huge damage and knock downs is fun. All the while its challenging to carefully manage your stamina - which is key. Other aspects as you said are top notch. I love the climbing aspect which really opens up open world tactics vertically, getting from A-B and base building. (But once you start climbing, better hope you can reach the top before your stam runs out or you are falling to your quick death) Base building is best in class for sure, the options and directions you can take are literally endless. They are bringing PVE - CONFLICT servers so there is only open world PVP and no base destroying which suits me perfectly as a solo player as it is definitely a grind to build your base. Funcom did an awesome job to bring it from what it was to what it is now. This is a perfect example of early access done right! Surprised the shit out of me, and definitely my personal game of the year so far. I haven't been enthralled like this in a game for a long time and have had many hours of brutal, stressful and bloody satisfying adventures. Much love from Australia! Cheers
Haven't played it, but my biggest gripe with the PvP aspect of games like this is always the same. In a Lord of the Flies scenario, everything always boils down to two things: 1. The strenght and activity level of the group you're affiliated with (which means that adolescent males will be your reality) And 2. Server management (which will be an unpredictable travesty 99% of the time). Any game, (especially PvP centric survival games) That depend on community attitude to function properly, is doomed. It doesn't matter how good it is, vast quantities of mouth breathers WILL fuck up your experience.
6:17 I fucking lost it mate!!! The build up was so epic, like i was listening to the narrator of the Conan movies, and then the boss colapses and Mack goes "WTF!?" Stunned onlookers: "World first!" "He just fell over!" Grandma meme: "I have fallen and i can't get up..." I am absolutely cracked, i laughed so much!!! XD
Why didn't Mack acknowledge the difference of the combat from EA release. He claims it's total sheit, but the amount of improvement from EA is fantastic. It may not be perfect, but waaay better and more satisfying than EA release...
When you kept saying "tan your hide, tan your hide!" I just kept thinking of Tom Green doing "The Backwards Man". Like how he keeps repeating himself . Excellent.
Don't get me wrong - the review is spot on, but Conan Exiles is still a great game with the potential of being the best survival slash rpg game on the market. Let us hope that Funcom would not abandon it and add some free dlc type expansions in the near future. Once again great review!
The game is extremely fun despite all its faults, even in SP. Just wish they would fix the AI and add the things they promised to bring in like mounts. One of the games strong points though is you can choose to follow some random story quests you find. Finding a paper from an NPC which leads you to treasure, that you have to follow the instructions precisely like taking 20 steps north, 30 steps east etc. It's extremely satisfying having built your castle or fortress base, with npcs spread around, archers on the walls, fighters in the frontlines, and bracing yourself for a purge. The devs are still working to improve the game, (despite it having already been polished on release) so if anyone is on the edge about wanting to get this game, just wait a bit. If you aren't overly sensitive to a few bugs and glitches, definitely get the game. Assuming you're a fan of survival.
Are you planing on revisiting Empyrion - Galactic Survival at any time? They evolved a lot since your last review and I would really like to hear your opinion.
i bought this when it came out on ps4 recently. I've had to put it away for now because its difficult to know what the controls are. Even just equiping a weapon isn't told. It's like the makers just assume everyone knows. I'll go back to it when I have more time.
It didn't really miss the mark content wise. It is chuck full of great content. Just some of the programming job is shit which makes the game miserable in some situations and Mack being the perfectionist...
Darkweaver not a perfectionist its not too much to ask for a game that works. and obviously the mobs in this game either barely function or are nearly nearly useless. like he said its 2018 and programing mobs to atleast be decent isnt that huge a problem anymore. them not polishing the mobs ai up is just a sign of lazyness.
I appreciate this revisit to Conan Exiles. I really wanted to try this at one point, but I can't accept that formula for combat either. A game like this would've shined with combat mechanics similar to what we've seen in Chivalry: Medieval Warfare.
Alexander Sobieski The combat is only bad against some creatures, not all of them, and the thralls (npc tribes) ai is fine. They can and will kick your ass unless you bring the right gear with you. Also there's a Steam workshop for Conan Exiles which already has a ton of mods to enhance your gameplay experience
That sounds decent, but I yearn for challenging games defined by certain PvE elements. I'm actually a bigger fan of Hunt Showdown for this simple reason regarding combat game-play. Exiles just doesn't look like something I would enjoy due to it's simplicity and vastness. Plus I've already committed myself to making the best of Planet Nomads for a survival/exploration experience. TLDR: maybe I dun goofed? Who knows - time will tell!
I agree there are problems that really need to be sorted out. But I'm having so much fun in this game! Here's hoping Funcom (ugh), doesn't mess this one up and will stick with it, and iron it out. Hope to see you play more of this one Mack. TY for the video.
Hey, it's been a few months since your review, do you think you could give it a fresh look since the game was fully released a while back. I'm not sure if you reviewed the early access version or the full release so... and there was a new big update released very recently too so...
Its not AI problem per se, it's a combination of different things from design to implementation phases. Basically if your levels look as pretty as these do, then the pathfinding system is going to be very difficult to implement. For example that spider can't find a path to the player, because the cliff seems to be an "island", surrounded by unpassable terrain. The algorithm doesn't seem to support jumping over gaps like these. Not to even mention the animations and other assets needed to be created to make that simple passing look good or up to par with other assets in the game. In contrast, look at WoW, everything is plain and flat and it's much easier job to create believable "AI" and pathfinding.
And even then npcs will warp around or simply run back to their spawnpoint when they cant get to you/turn invincible if you manage to kite them against a cliffface while still in their aggro range. It seems that these AI issues stem from graphic designers/level designers and people responsible for the AI simply not working together just like you said.
This is really basic though. Pathfinding is fucked because the mobs can't climb or jump whereas the players can. And animation is static, if they're executing an attack, they freeze in place. The latter is really easy to fix. The former just signals incompetence and zero foresight.
Funcom again, great looks but the technic behind it simply does not work. They should have just copied AoC's combat system into Conan Exiles and it would have been a lot better since AoC probably has one of the best combat systems when it comes to melee combat.
How is this not Ark with a Conan skin? I've had my eye on this title for a while, thought it was gonna be something cool. I don't understand how all these developers are satisfied with creating the same game that somebody else already made.
Harold Phoenix shooters typically have an overall story they are following. Usually cut scenes, dialogue, character development and some sort of progression. So the mechanics are similar, but the experience is different. If you asked any Conan fan, I'm guessing they would want a solid adventure type RPG with a rich story and good fighting mechanics. If I walked in on somebody playing this game, you could tell me that it was Ark or Rust, or any other of the countless fort building, grindy resource collecting, boring open world survival games. I wouldn't be able to tell the difference. If anyone has the game, let me know if I'm wrong. I can't find a review that makes it look like anything more than that.
I couldn't agree more with your review. I have been saying the same thing. Maybe I'll check back in a year or so. It could be something good, but it has a ways to go to get there.
Spot on with absolutely everything, as always! I want this game to succeed so much because as you say it is beautiful and everything bar the combat and AI is spectacular. Is there anyway we can sign a petition to get them to actually do something? Cause I don't want this game to die :(!!!
I think I’m gonna but it, because I personally like games where I can create a character and shape their story. The combat may be bad, but I’m sure they’ll fix it in the future.
great review as always! im curious how you might compare official pvp to ark? does this world also have megatribes and alphas that tend to rule? or are there mechanisms in place that at least mitigate this from happening like no cross server transfers.
The game is awesome, i refunded back when it released in EA, but so much stuff was added and polished. I agree with the AI problems, but i cant when it comes to combat, the combat is great and feels great. For me it felt like DS a little bit, you roll and stuff pretty much all the time and you have to time your attacks when fighting against a bigger enemy
Damn, I was looking forward to that game. I only hope that they don't mess up Mount and Blade 2 as well. How hard can it be to copy Skyrim, which came out seven years ago? Games like this are the reason why people still play old games with new mods for them.
Do you need to eat in this game? Ever since I learned that you could summon elder gods to fight your enemies I became very very interested, but if there's a hunger meter, that's a deal breaker for me. EDIT: After watching the video, it's clear that you do need to eat/ drink to survive. Oh well...
It's got some issues don't get me wrong but if you play it you'll love it... things will be fixed but helll.... i have so much fun on this game, especially with friends... its fucking awesome.
Played this in EA on PVP and after a long break I now play this again since release on a PVE Server. Ya sure the AI is bad, but the combat definitely isn't. The game itself actually gives you many good mechanics to make the combat solid. Each weapon got their pros and cons. There are combos, you can dodge, block, kick etc. The combat is far away from being bad. Its feels bit like Dark Souls sometimes where you have to attack, attack, dodge. The bigger creatures and Bosses are sure a bit more boring to fight, because 90% of the time you just try to make them stuck somewhere and attack from range. This game also got many minor and some major bugs, but I can forgive that because the rest is fun and packed full of stuff to do. Honestly I think it's worth it's money. Could it be better? Sure it could, but Mack somehow forgot he's doing Worth A Buy, and what the game offers sure is worth they money they ask for I say.
Couldn't believe what I was hearing initially but then Mack kicked into gear with the AI and I was happy...for a moment I was terribly concerned Mack had been replaced by an Alien and the real Mack was being endlessly probed in a UFO somewhere....Any online game, I give at least 1 year before spending any money on it.
1:38 The way the Rino turns around is just ridiculous.
7:12 Thank God you start about the A.I. :-)
P. Patrick Tukkers It’s a Rotorhino. It’s in the lore............. lol
Agreed! That rhino looks ridiculous the way it just rotates on the spot.
I wish devs would sort out that sort of thing in games.
John Doe But it did cost $60 and it did have paid DLC, so whats your point?
John Doe you're fucking stupid as hell. Game prices do NOT need to be as high as they are for most games, AAA games only cost a lot because companies think throwing money at a game will make it better, vs what small indie devs put out with minimal budget.

Looks like the devs pulled a "that will do" on the AI and combat. They need to fix that asap.
mud, I love that bit. It describes perfectly the scenario were someone is doing just enough
I agree but you should have seen the combat before. It was literally "left swing, right swing, left swing, right swing." At least now it looks better even if it is left click/right click spam.

Yeah the ai is very important, because that's where the longevity of a game is. Basically once the game becomes unpopular it's dead.
"Arcticness of the Arctic" 😂😂😂
6:26 - They must have hired the Monty Python animator to do this guy.
You missed one of the coolest parts, Mack!! The free-climbing!!
Buddy I live for that fucking intro. "Is it any good? Is it worth a buy? Is it utter shite???? Let's take a look..."
Can you fulfill your broken promise on Rust?
If that means review it again, i hope he does. He already pounded it senseless in the 2015 revisit, he will kill rust with fire this time. That game was shit.
It is too much of a trollfest and Crybyn should be in the bin. :)
Tripnotik25 Rust is the best survival game and is the least grindy.
Tripnotik25, I've only got like 200 hours but how is the game that grindy? How is upkeep bad unless you have a huge op base? How does it run so bad for you when they have been optimising the game every update?

Just from me hearing you explain this game makes me wanna buy it.
How many sticks are needed for the fire Mack? I still chuckle over your rant over that in the original WAB

So is the boss fights fun am interested in playing this game solo
I just bought this game on sale exactly for that and with the purge, I shall see what awaits. Ya'll should try Far Cry 5 and build solo ai or multiplayer maps.
So it's June 2020... have they improved the combat & A.I. now?? :)
Damn the first part of this video made it look so good.
I'd like to take a drink out of Meg's garden well.. I hear the water ain't tested too often though, so maybe I'll just splash some on my face..

I agree. I do not think Mack goes in with the right mentality. It is a survival game. Probably one of the best out there.
I agree. I haven’t played any game as much as this in the past 5 years. A masterpiece in my opinion. I hope they make a second one.
Haven't played it, but my biggest gripe with the PvP aspect of games like this is always the same. In a Lord of the Flies scenario, everything always boils down to two things: 1. Yes Mack, if you think the combat is bad now. :D
While most of his WABs are fairly accurate he doesn't put in the research and hours to be aware of this.
Mack, you need a sideways thumb for draws like this!
When you kept saying "tan your hide, tan your hide!" I just kept thinking of Tom Green doing "The Backwards Man". Like how he keeps repeating himself . Excellent.
Got this at launch, been loving it

Free DLC is a curse for the people at Tencent(Funcoms masters)
Has it got Zimmerman’s theme tunes from the original movie?
Running around wacking the air with a stick, if done correctly, can actually be pretty fun.
The game is extremely fun despite all its faults, even in SP. Just wish they would fix the AI and add the things they promised to bring in like mounts. I like how when you are a massive god the ground shakes with each step you take
So the beasts here are also like - he is there, he is there, he is there
11:42 - MACK SMASHES HIS BITCH !!!
So who wound up sleeping on the sofa after that game.
lol
There's just been a massive update, introducing magic. So worth another revisit Mack?
Has it got better yet Mac?
Are you planing on revisiting Empyrion - Galactic Survival at any time? They evolved a lot since your last review and I would really like to hear your opinion.

man that was SUCH a good WAB... missed ya Mack... i loved this format... felt like watching a movie. awesome.
good and honest review.. but i would thumb it up.
Early access game missing the mark? I would be surprised if it wasn't so bloody common 0_o
yup Star Citiscam I mean Citizen
dumbest example as it is constantly being worked on and updated LOL troll
CIG are nearly bankrupt. If you were in the know you would consider my example class A truth. Go back to school you dumb kid.
It didn't really miss the mark content wise. It is chuck full of great content. Just some of the programming job is shit which makes the game miserable in some situations and Mack being the perfectionist...
Darkweaver
not a perfectionist its not too much to ask for a game that works. and obviously the mobs in this game either barely function or are nearly nearly useless. like he said its 2018 and programing mobs to atleast be decent isnt that huge a problem anymore. them not polishing the mobs ai up is just a sign of lazyness.
I didn't know this game had places other than the desert.
jason and the argonauts! what a movie. did he have a plug on his "achilles heel"?
When will you videos from Mackscorner be public again?
Not for a while, yes I may do TDU2 as a retro
Well it's mainly PvP focused. PvE servers were only added because some wanted to focus only PvE
"He will appear before you and you will goaaauauuuu!" HAHAHAHA gold. Keep it up, buddy. Spread your wings. You could have a future doing this,
I appreciate this revisit to Conan Exiles.
Mack, could you give us another revisit after the last update? The game has changed a lot.
whats the next wab gonna be on ?? and why is your steam profile private nowadays even when you still put the link in the description ?
A lot of danger? *stands next to lava - clothes don't burst into flames as face melts* Yup, danger! ;)
I agree there are problems that really need to be sorted out. But I'm having so much fun in this game! Here's hoping Funcom (ugh), doesn't mess this one up and will stick with it, and iron it out. Hope to see you play more of this one Mack. TY for the video.
Is the building mechanic good?
"That will do": Exiles
Hello Mack. Out of curiosity, are you following the development of Chronicles of Elyria ?
Hey, it's been a few months since your review, do you think you could give it a fresh look since the game was fully released a while back. I'm not sure if you reviewed the early access version or the full release so... and there was a new big update released very recently too so...
This made me laugh so much- the spider hitbox was hilarious!
So many games with poor A.I. How is there no course on this? It's only the most crucial make or break thing!
FEAR was last game with good AI
Because they would do what project zomboid do, holding the ai for years and years
On the topic of MMOs are you gonna re-review Elder Scrolls Online? It's one of my top games atm. Just curious, Cheers from Pennsylvania Mac!
Crush your enemies!!!
See them driven before you!
And hear the lamentations of their women!
I was already imagining myself and my friends being totally immersed playing this game until the combat/AI criticisms dropped. Too bad.
Will you review test drive unlimited 2?
And when will you update your Eco review?
What happens if you die? Do you loose everything?
its free weekend now, came back to be reminded if or if not i should stay away
5:58 had me rolling in tears lmao
This gets advertised on Twitch so often, I don't care for it.
Funcom again, great looks but the technic behind it simply does not work. They should have just copied AoC's combat system into Conan Exiles and it would have been a lot better since AoC probably has one of the best combat systems when it comes to melee combat.
Can somebody answer me if the thrall system works properly now and what are its mechanics?
is it better then reign of kings though?
No fucking shit lol
Have you ever tried Gloria Victis?
can you revisit no mans sky I heard its pretty good now so I don't know weather I should buy it or not
How is this not Ark with a Conan skin? I've had my eye on this title for a while, thought it was gonna be something cool. I don't understand how all these developers are satisfied with creating the same game that somebody else already made.
Nicholas Woodside , one word. Money
'money'
Nicholas Woodside ahmmmm.. shooting game are everywhere dude.. so stop making shooting??. Your definition of game is messed up.
Harold Phoenix , Not as messed up as your English.
I can't find a review that makes it look like anything more than that.
i keep wanting to buy this... but it just doesn't seem up to snuff yet.... that sucks.
i guess i'll wait till it improves.
Guys, one year later do this game now delivers?
Is this still applicable in 2020? The ai and so?
mack have you had any streams latley havnt gotten any notifications
I think I’m gonna but it, because I personally like games where I can create a character and shape their story. The combat may be bad, but I’m sure they’ll fix it in the future.
Mackscorner - Worth a watch
great review as always! im curious how you might compare official pvp to ark? does this world also have megatribes and alphas that tend to rule? or are there mechanisms in place that at least mitigate this from happening like no cross server transfers.
Oh well...
ABOUT TIME!!!!
Seriously though, thank you for all your dedication and work. 😃
It's got some issues don't get me wrong but if you play it you'll love it... things will be fixed but helll.... i have so much fun on this game, especially with friends... its fucking awesome.
Stelios Kontos and this is why company still release broken products because of comments like this. Buy now they will fix ot later
Ehh I bought the game I like the game but the thing that bothers me more is the sound it's terrible but other then that it is fun
What's worth buying more? Ark or Conan Exiles?
I played ark to hell, but it’s gets to point where it’s like a part time job. If you have a life, Conan’s the way to go.
though apparently Ark for pvp is a nightmare, servers dominated by tribes who grief everyone else
Such a shit game
2019: I am wondering, should I get this or just enjoy Kenshi until something better comes around?
also wish there was visible holstered gear
