Remember when you used to go to a GameStop or something, having no idea what game you'd buy, and look at the back cover of a game to decide if you wanted to buy it. And when you bought it, it was a finished game. It didn't get any updates or anything it was all there. And maybe it's come with a Manuel that was custom to the game, detailing a lot of the stuff in the game and giving you a bit of story and stuff. (My favorite manuals were the Sly copper ones and the one for Saboteur)

I said the same exact thing a few years ago when this whole "pay to get into the beta" thing started becoming more popular. I didn't understand why in the world someone would ever do that, it seemed completely ridiculous, but the desperation and impatience of gamers often seems too strong. What's worse is that sometimes it feels like companies don't even put their games through proper QA testing, they just release a beta, get paid for it and fix everything later.

I found my enjoyment of this increased by addressing the gathering issues you highlighted by creating a private server and changing the gathering rate/amount so one gather equals 3 pickups. Although I agree lots work still to be done.
This only tells me you didn't mess with the numbers after creating your personal server. You can adequate the experience to your liking, making it as horrible as you tell or as easy as you want. So the problems you faced are avoidable. The game suffer from other real things, like not enough story and NPC to interact looking for commercial or faith relationships. But not the 50 sticks, that you can get from a single tree, just modifying the numbers after you start to play. It's a good game if you are looking for an open world survival game.
I played for 1 hour today on Xbox One free trial. I never had to eat once. Clearly things have changed since Feb. I had fun. 46$ Canadian still seems steep but I had a good time.
Spot on Mack. I've been watching a UK livestream for the past 4 hours hoping your review would pop up, and it did! The livestream is having tons of problems right now, saying that though the devs are patching frequently and buggering it up even more :) I'll probably buy this in a week or so because it does look as though they'll pull through and get it right soon.
Great review, though I don't find it that big a hassle collecting 50 sticks, even though it is a bit much for a campfire lol. Been playing this a lot and it feels like its improving massively from day to day. Today I've had no problems at all in the game (apart form a crocodile biting me through the wall of my house). My team is building a base up the side of a mountain and it works perfectly fine. As you said, the potential here is absolutely massive. I feel like I've already had entertainment worthy of the price I paid. And knowing Funcom they will probably work a lot on improving it even more. After economic issues following Age of Conan, they only have one choice if they want to survive as a company; make this game as good as possible.
A most enjoyable review there Mack. If I watched only the first half, I must say, I would have written the game off but it actually looks very interesting. And, I must add, with great joy - the lack of bell ;) Less bell = More Cowbell ;) All the best old bean! x
I've been a Conan fan since I was eight years old. I walked home one day and said "dad, reading is lame. All of the books are boring" Then my father spoke to me and said "Son, these books were given to me by my father and I give them onto you now" and he read me the story of Conan and the tower of the elephant and I've loved the franchise ever since. Sadly though I've been taking it up the ass for years as a Conan fan since they keep releasing wank like this and that god awful 2011 movie. I saw the trailer and it looked good, I thought to myself "Could this be? A good Conan RPG? The atmosphere looked so awesome, but pff, of course not, another shitty survival simulator. I want to climb into Elephant towers and steal shit, I don't want to gather me 50 fucking sticks to build a fire
How can the Battle Axe require a higher level to craft than a Khopesh, yet the Khopesh does significantly more damage and both have the same attack speed. The crafting system is littered with these inconsistencies. It took them three days to implement strength and accuracy actually influencing weapon damage. How do basic things like your damage statistics not actually working make into Beta launch without being noticed?
It should actually be min 3 sticks for fire start but more sticks makes it last longer and you can just feed fire as needed. If they really wanna make survival
Thanks Mr. Mac for the balanced and fair review. Here is hoping they do the early access magic and fix the game. Too bad is not as ready for action as Grim Dawn was out of the gate.
I think I have a solution for early access. If you release the game as early access you can only charge £4.99 for it. When you release the final version you can charge what you want but if you want to release it before it's made cap the amount of money that can be charged.
Is it better than arc at early access launch? Isn't arc doing ok now? havent really played it much. I hope this game gets better, I loved the conan lore and world. Only positive is this is early access, so they may change the 50 sticks to build a fire to 5 someday :p
You add a bit of diablo like drops, gear crafting and a questing system with leveling and stat distribution and you make the world enormous and you might have an amazing mmorpg
I bought into the game, love the setting and Conan.. and i'm having tons of fun but have to admit you are spot on with this review, I hope they will fix everything ! great review!
Tweaking the server settings for custom/single player games helps.... lord does it help As for the campfire, it's a permanent campfire so they made it hard to craft (keep noobs from spanning them around the map preventing building/re spawns) But yeah 50 sticks is insane First update today, they took out the adjust crafting amount cost slider... along with others that didn't work defiantly a wait and see if it's worth it a year or so from now.

Mack, fancy doing a revisit of this game? I'm thinking about getting it but suspect it may still be too soon... would love to see what you think of it now...
I'll check this game out again when it's finished. I love Conan (read every book) but can't say I'm very exited about this product. Thanks for your wab, agreed.
It doesn't matter what its possible future "potential" is. Customers should not pay for a future promise or potential. We should pay for what's right in front of us right now. And what we have right now, is another broken ass game rushed out the door which will probably be shovelwared in a few months. Another thing that doesn't help is the track record for these kind of shovelware survival games, which come out daily, year after year, most being horribly broken, then dumped, without ever being even half finished. They expect trust and faith from us, aka us throwing down money for a broken product with only their promises it'll be fixed later, but in today's market, you've been proven time and time again that there is zero reason or benefit to do this. What I mean is, if you buy this, or any other survival game, because it could "potentially be good IF IF IF"; you're a sucker.
They are updating the game like crazy, 500 MBs in updates in the last two days (two patch updates) So that is a good sign. So far i enjoy the game, most of the issues you speak of i have not encountered, but does not mean they dont exist. I dont even want to bother with the official servers because of the fact it takes so long to gather shit. I made my own server with 2-3 times on most things and its now bearable. Which i am thankful i did cause to make certain things you need 100 iron which you need two ironstone to make 1 ingot and you get Ironstone once every 4-6 boulders. So not very often at all even with me multiplying resources by 3. Of all the survival games id say its had the best launch, with the most features, best optimization and least amount of bugs. Not to mention this is just the tip of the iceberg. Tons of content is planned to be released and i trust Funcom a fair bit. Least they are a reputable company.
well i just started a game in sp/co-op after the server search for mp crashing on me like every time i looked. and it kinda comes down to the hoster. i found a german server named kacknoob which balances the game a little more. what i am saying is that you have a whole lot of parameters you can change. from how much you harvest to spawn speed of whatever is in the world and lots of other things. basic settings just make the game stressful and unbalanced as hell but when you change the parameters it becomes really nice. but yeah aside from that spot on.
Thanks for another review. I remember Age of Conan all too well absolute shame as I'm a fan of the Conan novels and lore of Hyboria. Can't believe Funcom is even trying anymore how are they still in business? They went from about $48 USD/share at launch of Age of Conan to about $2.50 within one month of the launch. Was hopeful about this game when I heard the title. Than I heard Early Access and I hear Funcom again. Oh no.
Still an Early access, but yes I recommend that you lot wait, but can't say I experienced a lot of the issues you mentioned so far. But have played very little compare to others. They already started to fix a lot of the known issues, but as we with early access new problems comes with fixes. But is getting there.
Thing is this is a pre alpha it's not even a complete game and they're charging people 30 bucks for this pre alpha that's criminal it's just as criminal as what WB is doing to injustice 2 with their season pass and locking darkseide behind a preorder paywall
I'm so glad that you covered this and also Resident Evil 7. I was planning on purchasing both but this game really seems appealing but looks let down by the mechanics and Resident Evil just looks predictable. Thanks Mack for saving me £50!
I think the game has potential, and I think in a year's time, when it hopefully becomes more stable, it will be worth the price they are asking for it. As of now though it's just frustrating to deal with the many issues the game currently has.
I still don't understand pvp survival games. In ARK at least you have tangible goals. Here... you make a base the exact same way everyone makes a base so you don't get broken into, you kill each other on sight, and when you finally DO get somewhere you kill noobs all day and hoard other people's stuff in your ugly, square base with 1000 doors. It seems to only exist so youtubers who make ear-grating voices or just troll all day can stay relevant. It's honestly sad. Because from the trailers of these games - nearly every single one - you get the idea that you're supposed to build a civilization out in this wasteland. That you're supposed to start from the bottom and soon build a society with your fellow players - however, this idea never happens. It turns into the same RUST gameplay. Nobody wants to work together if they can attack each other. As long as people have the ability to grief other players they won't have any interest in much else. That's the issue here - if they enjoy that gameplay then FINE - but.. they don't need 50 MILLION different versions of rust. They already have rust. Though it looks like the only reason this game is at all relevant is that they reached out to a bunch of twitch streamers to play on their server. I don't see this game living that long, which is a shame, because the world does look really cool.
the potential is huge but I feel like it is just going to turn into 20+ ppl clans running each server which is ok but it doesn't allow competition on a grander scale.
as an irl bushcraft expert, 50 sticks is about right to get a stable fire, seeing as wood burns real quick. but other than that you're right about this game. trying to get a refund. rust is way better, at least for now.
On eating haven and hearth is the only on that does it right. In that game you want to eat more cuze it,s part of lv your stats. Different foods lv different things many useless to the character you want to be. It also takes more food points too lv up a stat each time. So quality 1 berries are not going to cut it. You need to cook better, hunt dangerous animals, trade, farm better quality crops so you also tame and raise better quality animals.
They have fixed alot of the issues from what i have seen now. AI path finding hasnt been an issue for me. NPCs will attack from sight at a medium distance.
do you plan on doing this one again when it comes out? Just wondering because there are so many people who have been defending this game from the start. i personally had hopes for it but i believe funcom has failed again. Curious on your thoughts on the end product of the game in May.
I'm not surprised that the game is bad at the moment. When I saw the trailer for the game I had a feeling it would be plagued with problems. Might have been better to make a Conan game that wasn't open world but just story driven and actually focused on Conan.
just for fun : did you know there are 10 people listed in the credit of this game under the "Quality & Assurance Testing" :D 10 PEOPLE !! Payed to report in-house the bugs/broken mecanics etc... ! i'm amazed by what Funcom is capable of doing. It's just sad the Conan franchise get's soiled by this... thing. for everyone loving this universe : play the still great Age of Conan MMO !
Check out Yimir’s legion server on pc! Me and some friends set it up yesterday! Admin only plays to set up events. Fun bunch of guys and girls on it already! It’s a 70 slot server!
Funcom fix bugs? Age of Conan is 9 years old and still has many launch day bugs. Not to mention that the best bits of AoC, the sound and artwork, have been copy/pasted into this game.
First Last last of us 2, prey, injustice 2, persona 5, kingdom come deliverance, zelda breath of wind, mount and blade banner lord, system shock remastered, outlast 2, Blackwood crossing, what happened to Edith finch etc. there are countless of games that are worth a look at. not just red dead redemption 2 lol.
Neal gray i agree with you on bannerlord but the rest are just quick hits. They very very quickly loose replayability and are traded in. Red dead redemption 2 and bannerlord will be decent games that will be enjoyable to play multiple times over.
First Last I am going to have disagree with in that. kingdom is really good and they are fixing and updating the game pretty often. the developers are always in contact with the potential consumers, they give out updates on what they are going to do. it looks really good and on top of that it will probably support mods. persona looks really good idk if you played the others, but persona looks like it's going to be great. they released some game play, it's one of those games where you either love the animation of the game and turn based rpg style.mount and blade looks really good, with its combat riched and it looks like it may have a gotten some influences from dark souls a little bit. injustice was pretty good, now I do agree with it may be a hit and miss, but since it's DC and many people love DC I think injustice will be pretty good. plus on top of that the story was really good introducing the villains and super heroes and has this good vs evil thing going on. so we will have to see, but all of this is just my opinion and I think we just have to wait and see how these games turn out.
I have the game, it's a fair review. game deff has alot of work needed, once you get further in its easy to not die. the food and water part he is IMO wrong about, one of the stats when you level is survival, once you get 4 points in it you almost never have to eat. but I agree with alot of the other things he said, bow needs a fix, but archer thralls are somehow gods at headshots
I commented positive against Conan Exiles but my comment was deleted ?? WHY? This game is an Early Access! You cant comment so negatively! You're silly, not the game !
Why did it have to be yet another open world survival game? Because we REALLY need another one of those. A Dark Souls style game set in the Conan universe would be better.
Remember when you used to go to a GameStop or something, having no idea what game you'd buy, and look at the back cover of a game to decide if you wanted to buy it. Playing it now, I will be reviewing it later this week
You may play completely offline. It's best experienced online for most people, however.

This looks very promising but will wait for your review. Can you comment on single player and father son co-op potential please? Cheers mate :-)
I need answers! This game looks good, but I fear that I will be disappointed, need your expertise! ;)
Worth A Buy YAYAYAYAY
Early access, so your testing the game, do we get paid? Oh wait no we pay them to test there games
Yeah how times have changed...for the worse.
Worth A Buy its the best game its original never seen before and the amazing launch 2017 gaming at its best lol

blame Minecraft...its one of the earliest and most popular examples of early access.

There will be people who buy this game for it's nudity, I guarantee it.
Yeah how sad....cough
I support nudity in games.
Yeah. I will definitely not get it. And definitely not play a female.

This is Funcom's desperate attempt to keep the Conan license. They should have lost it after Age of Conan.
Bear Grylls could build a mansion with 50 fuckin' sticks.

Mack Guarantees are the most trustworthy of all guarantees. Yep... /nods
Yep Seraphyx. I was confident he would return to this in 2 months but now he has given a mack gaurantee im getting that sinking feeling.
This game will still be a buggy pile of shit in two months, that's my guarantee
Yeah but in his defense it was a mack guarantee.

But not the 50 sticks, that you can get from a single tree, just modifying the numbers after you start to play. It's a good game if you are looking for an open world survival game.
every thing you place is adjustable by holding alt or shift and spinning the mouse wheel to raise, lower, or angle.
I played for 1 hour today on Xbox One free trial. I never had to eat once. Clearly things have changed since Feb. I had fun. 46$ Canadian still seems steep but I had a good time.
your energy levels go down quicker than old megs knickers in this game
Great accurate review...I wish I would have spent 10 minutes to watch this before I wasted an hour on the free trial...which was horrible!!!!!!!
Its a wip. I don't like the hit detection. They said it would be great feedback when hitting something but I don't see it.
Very little feedback tbh
How can the Battle Axe require a higher level to craft than a Khopesh, yet the Khopesh does significantly more damage and both have the same attack speed. The crafting system is littered with these inconsistencies. It took them three days to implement strength and accuracy actually influencing weapon damage. How do basic things like your damage statistics not actually working make into Beta launch without being noticed?
It should actually be min 3 sticks for fire start but more sticks makes it last longer and you can just feed fire as needed. If they really wanna make survival
Is it like ARK where using the pickaxe would give you sticks?
Thanks Mr. Mac for the balanced and fair review. Here is hoping they do the early access magic and fix the game. Too bad is not as ready for action as Grim Dawn was out of the gate.
I wish steam would make a rule that you cant charge more than $5 for early access. When it goes live players can pay the difference.
Only positive is this is early access, so they may change the 50 sticks to build a fire to 5 someday :p
couple of months? alright Mack, see you in like a year and a half.
You add a bit of diablo like drops, gear crafting and a questing system with leveling and stat distribution and you make the world enormous and you might have an amazing mmorpg
Hey Mack, are you going to review that once they launch the new expansion on the 16th of August?
Will you do an Update if they fix all these Issues ?
mack did you get a betacode for gr:wl and are you testing sniper ghostwarrior 3?
I bought into the game, love the setting and Conan.. and i'm having tons of fun but have to admit you are spot on with this review, I hope they will fix everything ! great review!
Hello. Has this game been updated since this review? Do you still need 50 sticks to build a fire, or 24 chickens to not starve?
Tweaking the server settings for custom/single player games helps.... lord does it help
As for the campfire, it's a permanent campfire so they made it hard to craft (keep noobs from spanning them around the map preventing building/re spawns) But yeah 50 sticks is insane
First update today, they took out the adjust crafting amount cost slider... along with others that didn't work
defiantly a wait and see if it's worth it a year or so from now.
An update video for this game now when it is released?
I thought that was Arc footage for a moment there. Are they using the same assets?
Mack, it was nice of you to buy Old Meg a copy of the game!
3:37 - MACK!!! You were supposed to say your thirst and hunger bars go down faster than old Meg on payday!
WTF! Stop being so damn negative about the game haters ! You are warned before you buy the game that it is an early version of the game ! Look here ! :
"Early Access Games
Discover, play, and get involved with games as they evolve.
What is Early Access?
Get immediate access to games that are being developed with the community's involvement. These are games that evolve as you play them, as you give feedback, and as the developers update and add content.
We like to think of games and game development as services that grow and evolve with the involvement of customers and the community. There have been a number of prominent titles that have embraced this model of development recently and found a lot of value in the process. We like to support and encourage developers who want to ship early, involve customers, and build lasting relationships that help everyone make better games.
This is the way games should be made."

Did you strech the bow?
Will you do a new review on this? Seems it had a big update
I'm not gonna buy it anywhere near this state, but i hope it reaches it's potential. I like the Conan setting.
"Ding! Ding! Ding!" is what I heard when UA-cam notified me on my cell.
Hey Mac, have you heard of a game called ECO?
Mack what is the riddle of DLC?
Are you gonna update this Mack?
As the official release is this month.
Mack getting a cheeky mention by Pretty Good Gaming in their video today, nice to see this channel getting recognition!
I think the game has potential, and I think in a year's time, when it hopefully becomes more stable, it will be worth the price they are asking for it. As of now though it's just frustrating to deal with the many issues the game currently has.
how is it today ?! (Feb 15th)
I read the patch notes and it seems they fixed a lot of things you mentioned
Mac ... When are you going to revisit conan exiles again, so much have changed since your review in Feb?
the potential is huge but I feel like it is just going to turn into 20+ ppl clans running each server which is ok but it doesn't allow competition on a grander scale.
Are people not bored of these games yet? There's so many of them out there and they are all the same.
as an irl bushcraft expert, 50 sticks is about right to get a stable fire, seeing as wood burns real quick. but other than that you're right about this game. trying to get a refund. rust is way better, at least for now.
Is ARK review going to happen any time soon like you said 2 weeks ago?
Not until you put that pic the correct way around
AH shit. That gave me a good chuckle :' )
There is no up and down in space!
Worth A Buy oh look. Hes sideways now
Does the arrow even fly? I can't see...
I don't think you were actually firing the arrows btw. At least the number of arrows you had didn't reduce each time you fired (stayed at 5)
On eating haven and hearth is the only on that does it right.
No Arnold Schwarzeneger Six Pack Abs Skin Pack DLC? :D
Hey Mack, glad to hear you can see the potential in this game. Any info on the server you're hosting? Name, ip, server settings?
I'm not surprised that the game is bad at the moment. When I saw the trailer for the game I had a feeling it would be plagued with problems. Might have been better to make a Conan game that wasn't open world but just story driven and actually focused on Conan.
Will you revisit this game after some time?
couple of months
He says he'll come back to this in a few months so.... sometime in 2019 then? ^_^
ShaneD3488 Yup, he revisited the game in 2019.
just for fun : did you know there are 10 people listed in the credit of this game under the "Quality & Assurance Testing" :D 10 PEOPLE !!
Not to mention that the best bits of AoC, the sound and artwork, have been copy/pasted into this game.
any chance we'll see a Halo Wars 2 review?
Will you be covering Ghost Recon Wildlands?
Oliver Armitt no need it's already gonna be another shit game that they throw away
Max Did i ask you?
Max haha you are funny
i will be playing the beta soon :D
Maybe even make an video of it
Fact - Wildlands will be utter trash. Guaranteed empty map, guaranteed dumbed down graphics and animations. It will be utter shit.
how would it run on a 970 ultra settings?
lol gaming is over. Red dead redemption 2 is the only game to look forward to.
for honor?
StaticOrgy nah I dont think for honor will prove its hype. Rockstar games make good quality games so expect Red dead redemption 2 to be good quality.
Are you going to WAB Nioh on the PS4? Its getting universal praise would like to see what you think when its out.
can u play it like completely offline , alone?
Wow mack, I has 2 deep laughs from this video. Not a snicker, not a teehee, not a giggle, but a hard fart out of my mouth.
atleast the animals dont fly through the air and can go through walls like in rust
Is this coming to the PS4? I hope so it looks amazing.
Could you revisit this game? I've heard a lot has changed and so much improved as it's about to launch even on consoles.
Man I love this guy! Subbed.
Why did it have to be yet another open world survival game? Because we REALLY need another one of those.
A Dark Souls style game set in the Conan universe would be better.
Can you please visit/revisit "Gloria Victis" or "Life is Fuedal"?
Hey Mack if you want to try a good survival game, try Don't Starve
Was early access, been released fully for a while now
just outa dumb ass curiosity what music does mack listen to
