It's an acquired taste, time and effort lead to you discovering the music you'll never leave, and it will leave you more satisfied than any other, the strength of mind needed to even conceptualize music like this is mind boggling =). Have you seen Aphex live? if not, do, you may find yourself thinking a whole lot different.
leah wallage-coyne Same here I can't believe he's coming to play in my country. It's going to be the first festival I go to next summer so Im pretty nervous but also super excited
It was really disappointing how few people actually bothered to come and watch Aphex Twin at Future Music Festival. Considering how goddamn insane the light show was, and how absolutely mind-blowing the music was... I just couldn't get over how few people were there! PS... props to the random chick that kissed me on the forehead when I was sitting on the stairs, that restored my faith in humanity for the day ;)
It's kind of hard to explain. It might sound like noise at first, especially if it's a poor quality recording like this one, but it's just really complex. Lots of layers and beats and stuff. Richard D. James likes to experiment with sound and music and push the boundaries a bit. When you sit and listen to it carefully, you can appreciate all the different elements. Not just on an intellectual level, it actually feels good to listen to.
He does in fact hate the term IDM. Some fucking journalist or critic probably made that up. I prefer Richards own "braindance." Also, to the noob that prefers swedish house mafia, who quit after a few measly years, all music is fucking noise. Afx is forever.
theonlymikeystatic thank you! i also prefer the term braindance! Idm says: "i'm smater than you" but braindance just says:" It's like a rave party, but for your brain not your feet" :D

Im 34, & work with a bunch of teenagers. When they ask me what kind of music I listen to, im always hesitant, cause Im pretty sure they wouldnt know squarepusher from autechre. I say "electronic music," that gets interpreted as techno, which yea I like, but doesnt quite encompass my taste. I generally say Electronic Dance Music, which I guess is a more modern classification. Techno is like Disco, those terms are so dated. And IDM sounds very pretentious, and i'd rather not come off as a douchebag.
Anyone got track ID for the song around the 00:35 mark? There was a song I was really digging during the period with lots of red lights. I'm hoping this is it.
Its cool if you can't comprehend the amazing, gut-busting, intelligent, industrial force that is Aphex Twin, but please don't try and give people that can comprehend it your opinion.
Skrillex and aphex twin are completely different artists. They are both famous, and we can call each of them whatever we want, but it doesn't change the fact that they got to where they are because of their music and its effect on everyone else
couple tunes to point out.. i heard in the set.. technical itch- heavy metal hellfish & producer- theme from fuck daddy hellfish & producer- rude attitude
Alva Noto is great. But let's be fair, he has not changed a lot as well. Aphex Twin I still like a lot even though he has some rubbish, he has an extraordinairy musical ear and talent. Very rare and only matched by Burial at this moment I think in terms of feel for sound.
I love Aphex Twin, and have so for a long time. But in my personal opinion, I find a lot of this music just noise. Now before everyone gets mad at me saying that it is IDM, I understand. IDM is Intellectual Dance Music, but I'm not so sure as to what exactly is intellectual about this performance, unless he is trying to tell the story of a mad man or something. I understand that he is going back to his acid roots, but this music just makes me feel uneasy. I love Aphex Twin, not this performance
Having said that, near the end of his show, that does get pretty ridiculous. It's not exactly good to listen to, like it's not something I'd put on my ipod. It was a way of fucking with the audience a bit. I was at this show, and it was a crazy experience. Felt like my ears were getting raped. It was incredible, but not exactly music. More noise, as you say.

Nice work filming for half an hour!!
HA good luck with that. I'm sure LOTS of this is unreleased. I recognized a few songs tho.
As amazing as that looks Im so glad I didn't venture into there or else my face would of melted off
Yup he titled this kind of music "Braindance".
I love Porter Robinson but I'd choose Aphex Twin over him any day. :P
wow. he's not showing himself up?
Yes, sometimes he unfreezes and merges into the crowd.
Am I perverted or is that porn at 2:40?
it's the crowd.
this song is Dj ss - black V.I.P. soundcloud.com/michael-leigh-14/dj-ss-black-vip-remix-ss-remix
You cant compare SHM to this, it's like comparing the beatles(aphex) to Coldplay(SHM). Two totally different edges of electronic music.
Philip Glass
