Hey Will, after 48yrs in the timber industry I've had many issues along the way that you wouldn't believe. You didn't fail, you found another way not to succeed, I told all my apprentices this, all 24 of them over the years. Stand back, examine where you went wrong, re-plan, move forward, succeed. It will all fall into place when it's ready, your "just along for the ride" Steve
Spot on Steve...after 44 years as a cabinet maker I still remember the first week of apprentiship when I was asked how i would clean up the top on a rosewood table...I set to it with a belt sander lol, that went well...It's not the mistakes you will make its how you get over them..
Will, these van build videos are brilliant! They're exactly what I need to see because they're exactly what I would face if I did a van build. So stop apologising. You were absolutely right to change your mind about the roof cladding, if it's not right it's not right. I'm really looking forward to the next one.
I don't know how you can think these videos are not entertaining. It's really great. Shows how a normal makes a van build. Nothing goes perfect first time and admitting changes and frustration is genuine. All the way through the staining process I was like oh you shouldve paint it. I'm glad there's no fake bs!!! Keep up the great work
As an apprentice my electrician told me this; someone who has never done anything wrong - has never done anything. This is simply the learning by doing approach which is absolutely the best way to learn. Thank you for sharing. I like the human vs the job videos a lot.
I guess that bird was trying to let you know about the cladding colour choice not being the best Will 😬 I appreciate you keeping it real… it’s part of your channel’s appeal 👌😊
You got this! I'm a total see-you-next-Tuesday when it comes to ensuring that the amount of my personal effort matches the resulting satisfaction. I feel like a procrastinator, flipping through my drafts and research that is all dated over a year ago when I first purchased my van. I'm going so slowly, researching, purchasing, and abandoning or installing each component of vanlife. "It's covid, baby" - which means I both have ample time to dedicate to this build but I also had to avoid travel for unpredictable periods of time when I needed to pick up components/order labor. My point: even if you spend twice as much time on your build than you want to spend, birds still shit and there are many wrong moves in a van build that, with a lot of swearing and naps, are the only passage to better choices. This channel is the real deal, keep going Mr. Whereabouts - UA-cam channels like yours are my primary source of motivation.
Don't worry Will, everyone makes mistakes, we are in our mid 60's and still make mistakes and choosing colours is one that I've done many times so don't loose faith, keep on going, we love watching you and your progress ♥
Will...A couple of tips if I may....When you stain the cladding use a mini roller to apply then pull the stain out the length of the board with a semi dry brush..This will ensure you dont have stop/start marks were you finish the brush strokes and its quicker....You need to apply a coat to the back of the cladding to act as a balancer otherwise the cladding will cup as the strain will pull tight on one side only. I would recommend 2 fixings instead of one ( one near each edge ) otherwise again the board will cup on the joints (will 8mm) leaving you with a wave pattern ceiling..would if be better to use large head rivots rather than screws??? Just a though and wish you luck with the build
This video was like a warning for vanbuild that we should never hurry ,hey Will how are you today take your time enjoy this new trip have a great day and stay safe. 😀
Will, don't get upset mate, it's all part of the journey. You've got your van and you can still have your adventures, who cares if it's got a ceiling yet?! I like watching your videos BECAUSE they're a bit hap hazard and you do things in a real way. You don't pretend you didn't make mistakes like a lot do. Chin up! Tout va bien!
It’s easy to share our success but we learn from our mistakes. As a guy who is just planning a van conversion I’ve found the video very informative! thank you
Aww don’t be disheartened will.. you are learning as you go and showing people the real ups and downs of doing this. You are doing so well and we appreciate you taking us along with you on you’re journey! Love the videos.. I wouldn’t even know where to start!! Chin up dude :)
Sand the other side and the tongue, then get a stain you like and apply it. Then put them up as you were going to do. Loss of time but not a loss on materials. Don't be beaten and keep up the good work Will.
I really appreciate your candid and honest approach with these videos Will. It’s refreshing to see setbacks with such a tricky job instead of all sunshine and fake smiles like many others. It makes it seem much more accessible for those that also struggle. Have a great time in Scotland! Way more important to have adventures, the van build can wait!
love the transparency! keep ur head up mate and the struggles are just part of making the journey worth it!!! life is not without its obstacles, lesson learned....love this vid
It’s ok Will. Don’t be afraid to take a step back when you can take two in front later. All successful works always has tonnes of failures, at least you learnt how NOT to do it next time. You’re teaching new vanlifers who want to convert their vans DIY to focus on things taken for granted.
No worries man. It’s good to show the failures as well as the successes. Either way ur helping people out if they go through this process themselves. Also, u make it funny which is a huge plus. Keep on it man!
Remember, at the beginning of this van build you said you had no experience and you didn't know what you were doing. That's why I subscribed, ... the reality of building out a van. This is great content, keep it together, keep it coming.
Will I'm happy i subscribed to this channel. You are so refreshing. Sometimes things don`t always go the way we expect. You are showing the joys and the pitfalls of a van build. Your honesty and frankness is what makes these vids. I will be here to watch the final vid and I am very sure that when you look back on these down times it will make the outcome all the sweeter. Good luck mate. So looking forward to the next one.......BTW I'm of the ginger persuasion but I see what you were saying about the colour. lol.
Patience Will. Your doing fine. Love the videos. Craftsmanship takes time you'll get there. I for one would rather see you happy with your work than frustrated. Now deep breath, relax and have fun.
It's nice to have a real van build playlist with all it's ups and downs and mistakes to learn from. Thanks fro doing this! Good luck for the future mate! You'll definitively help me when I get to building my van someday.
Your vlogs are so real.. in most other van builds iv seen, people make it look so easy.. and yours just verify what I already thought.. and that's, that it's not easy, and can't be rushed. No worries though, you'll get there :)
Your video is entertaining because is ‘real’. Other van built just seem so perfect and dreamy which is far from the reality I am sure ( hey I wasn’t born last night ). Anyhoo; hope you have a great trip to Scotland.
I feel that this is exactly me as I struggle through my own vanbuild. Lol. I appreciate you showing the truth. How are there so many vanbuild channels showing perfectly curated builds by amateurs?!?
Look will we just like watching you and your content don’t worry about getting stressed it’s really not worth it you are a good down to earth lad and you make us crack up. All the best x
We had 4.8m lengths delivered for our van and cut all the cladding down to 3.6m size. We painted the offcuts before we put anything up to ensure we liked the colour. Half a pot of Sandolin dark walnut later we decided we hated it 😂 These things happen Will , it's about the journey , we never thought our build would end, but when we rock up to a spot , open the back doors and watch the sunset over a beautiful coastline, all the mistakes don't matter. Best of luck with this build mate, absolute class to see someone giving the realistic approach to building vans with 0 experience.
One step at a time Will. The adventure you're having in Scotland is worth the effort that you're putting into the van. Keep smiling and moving forward. God Bless
Mate you have literally just saved me a ton of aggro as I'm about to clad with the same stuff.. didn't even occur to me not to paint the actual T&G bits themselves! thankyouthankyouTHANKYOU!
Sweetheart, slow down and breath, your mistakes teach us as, much as your successes, if you mess up, it shows me what not to do. And thank you for that!. Have a blast on your trip, be safe. And see u in the next video
I loved this video. People should definitely subscribe. You told it how it is, even the crappy stuff. I think you're being really hard on yourself. And I spent the last 5 mins just wishing I could give you a hug, and tell you it would be okay. You looked so defeated but this is all part of the journey, it's all a learning opportunity. **hugs**
You’re doing well man. It’s important you love everything about your van, so take it slow and don’t go so hard on yourself. It’ll all come right in the end. Us fans of the channel will still be here however long it takes.
Don´t worry, the videao is worth it. As you said, thats live ;-) keep on, don´t give up. You do more than us, just sitting with theit butt on their sofas watching you working on something great!! Best wishes from Germany!!!
I think you are doing a brilliant job, Yes, you have showed you have made mistakes but you have inspired me to go out, purchase a Fiat and have a go myself in a conversation. I can't imagine that it is easy to do what you have taken on , but at least you are giving it ago. You will get there in the end and also gain so much support on your channel for being so entertaining and honest. All the best.
Hello Will, After 24 yrs as a carpenter I would like to say you didn't do too badly! Regroup and put up your cladding prior to staining. You probably used a stain with a polyurethane in it. Just use a stain that you wipe on and then wipe the access off. Or put up the cladding and then stain it. Use drop sheets so the floor don't get messed up. If you put up the cladding first you will not see any plain board after staining and the boards will go together very easily! don't be discouraged as you are learning as you go. You are doing a great job and people watch your videos for education. Keep up the great work.
I prefer your vids. They're real. I get frustrated with vids with lovely music and everything seeming so easy when it really isn't. I'm loving your vids including this one. 👍
I'm ordering this very cladding for lining my shed. The sanded / unsanded observation will be useful. I'm getting the hanger brackets rather than screwing through. Concur with how everything takes longer, taping over the kingspan and frame to complete the vapour barrier is a young person's game! Enjoying your honest vlog.
I watched the Scotland vid with Charlie and Lauren UA-cam it looks like you had so much fun and please dont think you failed its just a colour you dont like and best you halted it before putting up with it. Please dont feel deflated we know how hard it is to do these videos and have a life too so just chill we love you and watching this channel. we will wait and look forward to seeing you continue to build a nice home on wheels.
Don't lose heart mate. Your videos are so entertaining and people love to see a disaster unfold. Your subscriber numbers show your popularity. I know the pressures of releasing new content for UA-cam. Keep doing it because you enjoy it. Really enjoyed the video. Keep it up mate!
@@CrustyBiker he will need to sand the t&g's down so they will fit. Then sand the whole boards as he said the other side wasnt as smooth But still worth doing than having to waste all that wood

Yeh your video definitely gave some good pointers on choosing colours and to not paint grooves one the flooring. It’s good that your true and honest and show the bloopers coz I believe it’s a big help to a van builder. 👍
Hey. Cheer up. You don’t realise us others who are in the process or thinking of getting a van to convert and have no experience are actually learning so much from you. That it’s not as easy as others like to make out. I for one really appreciate your videos and honesty, so please don’t think you are grumbling because we all do when things go wrong. You’re doing an amazing job so don’t be so hard on yourself. I love to watch your videos. ❤️
Hi Will, don’t be hard on yourself, you have done well, you can change the colour, just have a nice time in Scotland, and come back with a new mind. Van builds do take time and you will get there eventually. I really enjoy your video content, you have given me new ideas for my own build. Don’t worry and be happy,😎😎. Have fun and take care xx🚐👍🤟🏼✌️xx
I've had my van 19 months mate and I'm still using it with just the insulation and vapour barrier air bed and futon mattress on top. It get very over whelming fast especially having very little to NO skill in building campervans but I'm sure I'll get there. The main thing is I still get to use and enjoy wild camping.
Don't be so hard on yourself.. learn from your mistakes and move on. Turn it over & yes your have to sand it but pick a colour you love not like. Take your time and be happy. Take care and stay safe. Enjoy Scotland 🤗
Love the cladding look pal, good luck with it! Sometimes things don’t go to plan, it don’t matter just pick yourself up and try again no harm no foul. If you don’t make mistakes you’ll never learn from them 👍 love your videos they are awesome 👏
Chill bro...take your time..we all learn as we try...have faith in yourself brother its gonna be a real good build!!!! Learn and enjoy the journey. So one-day you can help and advice people like me who ain't got a clue but might be up for giving it a go !!!! Stay blessed bro 🙏!!!!
Don't be so disheartened Will , Rome wasn't built in a day mate , and remember you're not a pro van builder , probs will occur but you will work them out , don't rush it cos it will look rushed, take your time and it will all come good in the end, great vid 👍 looking forward to the next , by the way your pal has a lovely steel framed cbr600 👍
Life is a journey and not all roads are true. Keep at it. Solve one problem at a time and not the whole problem all at once. I love the honesty and still love watching your videos. Bird poo 😆
Don’t be to down hearted Will, what you have done so far is Bloody awesome, it’s all a learning curve, enjoy your Trip North and I am sure you will come back refreshed and ready to continue your ‘Van Build’ Journey. Steve IOW 😎
This video was definitely worth watching keep sharing all the footage you have it's more like real life then. I like how you show all the work you do mate keep it up soon enough you will have completed the build and probably end up wishing you made more videos all the best mate
try sanding the cladding back and use a blow torch to give it a flame effect! Looks epic!!!…plus be hilarious to see you play with fire!lol… please people give this a like and make it happen 👍🏼👍🏼
This video made me laugh 😂 hopefully things go smoother for you when you get back, can't wait to see what it looks like when it's completed. Loving the Scotland adventures with Charlie and Lauren, looking forward to seeing them from your view 😁
Will, I haven't read the comments, but the way that I do staining is to put one coat on, let it set for a few minutes then rub off the stain. Looks really good when you do that. Use steel wool to rub out the stain. (no pun intended).
Head up Will we love your vlogs,me and my wife watch for you and how real you are mate, just watched Charlie and Lauren with wee Willy in the background ❤️💜
hey Will all good we are lovingly watching you all the way in Adelaide Australia, take your time get things ready for when you are ready. just love watching your travels, yes watching charlie and lauren as well so all good.
Lol..ive almost finished my ford transit conversion..2 years and many mistakes and money spent but its all worth it ..don't worry about the small mistakes , keep your eye on the prize and keep going it gets easier the more you do
Life of the van builders - you do about 20,000 things, and 19,999 of them don't work out....no worries though Will, just keep going, it will get there 👌 (makes it 10x worse having to edit it after the fact, knowing that the end result was not what you were hoping for). Combine the fact of trying to do something you've never done before, make weekly videos on it, having a video that actually feels like a story, and then trying to research and carry on building, it's hard. Take rest time, go out and enjoy day trips and just keep on hacking away at it, we've been going over a year, and it's still not done :)
Dude, don't be so negative. It was a learning experience. Make use of the failure and retry. As for content, I don't know about others but I mostly like your stealth camping, and keen to see more.
I love you show the reality of a van build. As soon as you said mahogany I was like “oh no sister, mahogany is very dark and 1980s”. Lighter tones and add contrast in other areas
Will don't be so hard on yourself, if you don't make any mistakes then you don't learn any think. Its a lesson leant for you and you won't do it again. Hopefully!! Just keep going

I would recommend 2 fixings instead of one ( one near each edge ) otherwise again the board will cup on the joints (will 8mm) leaving you with a wave pattern ceiling..would if be better to use large head rivots rather than screws??? Just a though and wish you luck with the build
Bless you Will.

Hi Will - the video was great! I love your honesty - thanks for making me laugh on an otherwise dull day!
Bird poo 😆
Don't be so hard on yourself, you are doing a good job so far, hope you enjoyed the nc500
Don’t be to down hearted Will, what you have done so far is Bloody awesome, it’s all a learning curve, enjoy your Trip North and I am sure you will come back refreshed and ready to continue your ‘Van Build’ Journey. Steve IOW 😎
You've helped many others realise to paint it after putting it up, so thanks It was worth it mate X
This video was definitely worth watching keep sharing all the footage you have it's more like real life then. I like how you show all the work you do mate keep it up soon enough you will have completed the build and probably end up wishing you made more videos all the best mate
Keep pushing man your doing great
try sanding the cladding back and use a blow torch to give it a flame effect! Looks epic!!!…plus be hilarious to see you play with fire!lol… please people give this a like and make it happen 👍🏼👍🏼
I love these video's, they are fun to watch!✌
This video made me laugh 😂 hopefully things go smoother for you when you get back, can't wait to see what it looks like when it's completed. Loving the Scotland adventures with Charlie and Lauren, looking forward to seeing them from your view 😁
For better or worse l love your videos because you're "real".
Loved the video and the realness you present. Keep up the great work.
Loving how fast you've grown on here. Keep up the content bud! We need more ;)
Head up and get on Will .... its ups and downs that make us
I’ve used the exact same cladding for my shed bar. It’s (relatively) cheap for a reason. Can take an awful lot of bashing to get it to fit together
Will, I haven't read the comments, but the way that I do staining is to put one coat on, let it set for a few minutes then rub off the stain. Looks really good when you do that. Use steel wool to rub out the stain. (no pun intended).
Thanks for keeping it real Will, looking forward to your Scotland vlog
Head up Will we love your vlogs,me and my wife watch for you and how real you are mate, just watched Charlie and Lauren with wee Willy in the background ❤️💜
hey Will all good we are lovingly watching you all the way in Adelaide Australia, take your time get things ready for when you are ready. just love watching your travels, yes watching charlie and lauren as well so all good.
Great stuff Will, no need to apologise, your content is brilliant. You will have a great time in Scotland 😎 looking forward to your next bid.
Chin up Will! Life is never perfect all the time! Enjoy your trip and then back onto the build 👍
Always look forward to seeing the videos even if you have set backs like with the cladding
It’s all part of learning mate, keep pushing bro!
Lol..ive almost finished my ford transit conversion..2 years and many mistakes and money spent but its all worth it ..don't worry about the small mistakes , keep your eye on the prize and keep going it gets easier the more you do
aye will don't put so much pressure on yourself, your only one man, its about the journey not the destination!
I don’t think the dark colour is the issue, it’s the orange tint. Walnut cladding looks 👌👌
Will don't be so hard on yourself, if you don't make any mistakes then you don't learn any think. Its a lesson leant for you and you won't do it again. Hopefully!! Just keep going
