It’s really starting to come to life with a new lick of paint and the curtains (which drove me mad installing). Currently on the way to Wales to get a piece of equipment installed that I can’t wait to share in videos coming up. Thanks for all your advice and tips on the van build, it massively helps. Make sure you’re following me on Instagram for live updates - @willswhereabouts 🤙🏼
Also mate don’t refer to it as a crack den 😂 I tell you from experience Some folk take jokes seriously. 👍 other than that crack on mate good job so far
Im a carpenter/joiner of over 30 years by trade...... Your videos keep me so entertained...... Keep going keep learning i guarantee the sense of achievement you will get when it's all finished will outweigh the struggles 10 fold 👌
Take ribbon, twine, whatever and tie the windows back. They look great! I'm glad you went with a lighter color for the walls. I LOVE that you mess it up and show us. Much more entertaining. For finger marks, spatters and dirt - you might not like the look but, I would consider sponge painting with about 3 similar colors of grey so that you get a lightly dappled effect. Also a semi-gloss paint if you don't have it already.
If your kitchen units are chipboard, any edges that you had to cut to size, its a good idea to seal with a couple of coats some polyurethane varnish. To stop the chipboard expanding when it gets wet or damp in the winter.
You seem so much more light hearted. Its a joy to watch. What are you going to do with the space above the kitchenette window? Are you putting a little cupboard there? If its prone to touching and thus finger marks and your not putting a cubby there, consider a salt and pepper/ spice rack? Plant shelf? A nice bit of art... All of which will deter you from leaning and creating finger marks. Alternatively consider a Polyvine Dead Flat Acrylic Varnish or something? Ply absorbs moisture quite alot and what you don't want is swelling. Due to movement also consider marine building materials... sealants etc... no vehicle moves more than a boat hey and this would help with potential condensation.
You don't need all that fabric at the windows. Draw curtains closed and work out how much you can reduce. Remove excess fabric from two centre seams. Also use side poppers to fix curtain tie each side and will let in whole more light! If down west country way happy to show you what to do and also how to do upholstery/cushions properly! 🤗 You are so right about taking your time, but you are getting there!😎
A nice acrylic eggshell paint is wash proof which is what you need. Especially being next to the cooker where you will get steam and oily smoke. We use it on our corridor walls at our infants school so it's well and truly tested! Great video and van looking amazing.
While you were turning the dodgy calendar around, over your left shoulder (on the video) was another dodgy calendar 😂 bloody love this channel! The van is coming along nicely, can't wait to see the finished article. Keep up the great content Will.
L👀king Good! Suggestion ... "tie backs " for your curtain. It won't give you back 60 cm, but it can widen your window space. If you're ok w/a needle & thread sew the tie back onto the curtain. If not. You could even glue gun the tie back onto your curtain. Happy Adventures!
You have me in tears of laughter mate, im so pleased im not the only one who has so much frustration from building a van . Ive tinted windows AND the blackout curtains, now we can have our interior lights on and nothing can be seen from outside . Hopefully wel catch up for a brew somewhere in the future and compare notes. The times ive kicked my tools , thrown components sworn screamed and yelled is unbelievable so youre not on ypur own
Suggestion. Use popper Tie backs for the curtains. One in the middle each side or 2 each side. That will pull in the middle section of curtain and give more window light.
I would totally extend the kitchen right up to the bed wall and then have a double seat next to the sliding door. This is how I did my van. Just a suggestion. :)
Mate, love seeing your progress, however satin finish paint for your panels will be easier to keep clean as emulsion isn't cleanable. And your curtains only need enough material to cover half the window each side too much will result in less window as you're finding out. Keep going and enjoy it.
In the US we have flat, eggshell, satin, semi gloss and gloss finishes. Flat and eggshell will leave scuffs on the wall and is more difficult to clean. Satin is a great option for kitchens and baths because it is easier to keep clean. You just wipe them down.
Watching you has become great source of craic! As the mother of 3 kids might I suggest using a washable type paint for the next layer. Are you intending to use the sink and the drawers? And hook up the hob to propane? And have your fridge all in that current kitchen configuration? I’d love to see a drawing of how that’s going to work.
Will you can sort out your curtain issues with some tie back straps. If you make them/get them made from some black fabric to match your curtains you won't even notice them when the curtains are open. Make them as short as you can get away with so that they hold the curtains back as tight as possible. Put a press stud on the ends of the straps to close them around the curtains and use a press stud in the centre of each strap to fix it to the window frame. To tie them back to the max, you could put two tie back straps on each curtain, one at the top and one at the bottom. This way they would be held back from top to bottom giving you much more light.
For the window space you are losing behind the curtains, I suggest that you attach a velcro strap or a leather button strap on the edge to bundle up the curtains. One on top and one on bottom for both curtains should do the job
If in the future you wanted to remove any of the panels, you could use a magnet to find the screws and then use a hot air gun to soften and dig out the wood filler.
Top video Will i always look forward to your Van update every week. I think that you are doing your van build the right way by doing it yourself because you are putting your soul into it & you will feel that every time that you go inside and use it, you will feel a huge pride knowing that you gave it your best shot. All the best.
As an aspiring van lifer that doesn't know shit about construction you are the biggest inspiration. The most realistic van build to follow along and learn from. Thank you will❤️🤙🏽
The best bit for me was covering up Miss January’s knockers and saying she got you in trouble all whilst there were more knockers over your shoulder 🤣🤣🤣
get some black cloth tie backs for the curtains , tie the curtains back in the middle that will give you more window showing , that's what was in my last van .
Your kitchen unit could go behind the drivers seat, just a 90 degree turn. Then you can sit to yor fab pull out table easily and even use the table for prep. A rotating passenger seat would still work when you have company. Good luck
you may be able to put some little clippy straps on the windows so that you can pull back that fabric a bit while the curtains are open you retain some more of your window.
Great videos. I thought it was just me that keeps snapping drill bits etc. Had to drill just one tiny hole last week while fitting a split charger. Drilled straight through the 8mm gas pipe. Its impossible to fix without removing everything. On the plus side the split charger works a treat. Keep em coming will. It makes me feel a little more normal knowing its not just me making mistakes every time I try to do a job. Martin.
Little tip Will, if you need to find any screws in the future once you filled and painted them just use a small magnet to locate them again by moving it over your painted area 👍
aww we've laughed and cried at your videos, sometimes just standing back, have a good look at what you have and then small steps to do what you want. Get some 'tie-backs' for the curtains. Andy and Kim.
I knew you were going to go with a sage green!! The curtain install was HILARIOUS! 😆 I had the same problem with drill bits when I fitted mine, but they are excellent curtains. My dog has gradually destroyed them though, so it's a good job I have a couple of spares. Keep plugging away at it. You're doing a really nice job and it's going to look great when you're done. 😁
I have also learned by doing. It's not always perfect but there is a great deal of pride and satisfaction when you are done. the F bombs are important to release steam. Good job, you had me laughing out loud.
Once you've done your final coat on the walls use something called decorators varnish. It's matt so you won't see it but protects the walls and makes them washable.
Hi will great video trying to fit curtains 😂but will keeping it real like that is the best, you get for us the real feel of the job you are doing and the pain and determination of you trying your hardest to achieve.. well done it’s looking fantastic love new kitchen work top very trendy.. just a thought is it possible to use a kind of curtain tie backs on your new black our curtains to let in more light and a better view out .. try it may work!! Joe 🤘
You can put a coat of polyurethane over the flat paint. Someone else recommended a satin finish on the paint, but if you can find water based polyurethane you can just paint it on over.
If you ever decide to do another van conversion tip for sanding open all doors side and rear doors and place a big fan by side door as you sand it will all be blown out the rear doors only leaving a small clean up job
I feel your pain with the curtains instal. I had the same setbacks with the same products. Four drill bits later, well you know the score. I had a problem with the tiny screw heads also.
Really is a big change, loving the colour & the curtains look great, maybe a curtain tie to pull them back in the middle may give you back a little bit of window each side. Your hard work is definitely paying off. Hope your sister had a great birthday. Take care and drive safe 🤗
Wood filler isn't a mistake over screw holes, the screws are holding that part of the ply completely still, so it wouldn't crack any more than if it was inside of a house. I've used filler in my van, (not even wood filler, but lightweight quick dry stuff) and two years later, it's still fine (I've also been decorating professionally for seven years now, so that helped my knowledge base!). You'll actually probably find that the caulk/flexible filler will actually leave "crack" lines in the paint, where the paint reactivates the caulk a tiny amount before it dries. In both cases, all it takes is another fill/another coat of paint in the future, and you're all sorted.
Loving the van build videos Will, I reckon you are going to have an incredible sense of achievement when you have finished it. I love the attention to detail. Thank you for the vlogs, they make my day.

Hi Will great videos, you make me laugh everytime. More like a reality series . As a marine upholsterer myself you could add some 25mm black or grey webbing tie backs to the curtains pulling the centre back and giving you more window. If you let me know the dimensions you need ill supply them to you foc. In a dark grey with the stainless screw in poppers to attach to . All the best Lee 👍
More hurry less speed lol Tip for curtains a bit of very thin leather or rope whichever colour you fancy tie in the middle of each curtain once opened to give u a bit more light loving this build as you learn
Starting to come together now Will. i've got the Van X curtains in my van (great quality). Once you put the tie backs on they will look better and give you more light .
Yooo. Curtains...I've got the same ones mate, I use the tie backs and have gained more window, word of warning ⚠️ when snagged, don't pull them, they do rip off the little rail sliders. Good luck
Hi will Your layout is roughly the same as mine , I would just carpet that side and leave the screw holes , as the carpet is easy to rip off if needs be , also it's better installation and looks a bit tidier , good luck
The van is really coming together Will. Looking good. I love the colour of paint you decided upon. Nice contrast with the rest of the van. Would love to see the van outside in the dark with your lights on full to see how good these curtains are. Cheers mate.
For the walls I would try painting a bit of scrap ply then a couple of coats of Matt varnish and see how it leaves marks and how much easier to simply wipe down. Then if your happy Matt varnish your walls

0:50 "more magazines behind" one behind you as you said that :P
I like the light grey on the walls.
Perhaps use the darker grey on the cabinet doors.
The simple fact you have completed some jobs on your own, mistakes and all, should make you proud Will. Its coming together, Well done mate 👍🏻
