Not sure how true this is, but apparently Jessica Alba grew up in a community that shamed her for her looks, told her it was her fault men looked at her perversly and was even once kidnapped from her first movie set. I would LOVE to see a deep dive of her. She is so talented and appears to be such a kind person, it's horrifying to think this may have really happened to her!
Dude I het you are one of those Woke crybaby gay snowflakes..... I am from 1976 and the nineties were the best days.... Did you ever ask Alicia about this??? To claim its het worst time???
I’m glad she had a good experience filming Clueless. Maybe it’s because it was a female-led operation but she just seemed happier & probably felt safer. Cher was a solid character.
also Paul Rudd was 9 years older than Alicia in clueless. the guy in the video talked about Cary, Jason, Stephen but didn't say anything about Paul. how interesting
Fun fact: Clueless was actually based on Jane Austen’s Emma! How cool is that? It’s extremely well written and she slayed that character. There were q lot of jokes that went over peoples heads at the time but watching the movie as an adult is a totally rad experience.
Jim Carrey forcibly kissed her on stage and to this day, you have folks excusing his behavior by saying it's supposed to be a joke. But clearly it wasn't funny to a visibly uncomfortable Alicia.
Imagine getting dressed up in a lovely white dress for an awards show, feeling happy, leaving your home, feeling pretty within yourself, only to read a scathing article about your weight afterwards. She was a maturing young woman and getting curves in all the right places. Her figure looked absolutely fine!
oh, come on. That gown is atrocious. I agree that her figure looked absolutely fine and I know the gown was a statement, but there are better ways to do that. Totally backfired.
Then don't go into a profession where your looks matter. She wasn't getting ready for her high school prom. Her competition were other gorgeous adult movie stars. If she had people that loved her giving her advice, they should have suggested she choose another field because the acting profession is all about looks and everyone knows it is brutal. Why does everyone act like they have no idea how Hollywood works??

Seems like she wasn't all too keen on constantly making movies anyway. I bet she's happy to this day. She doesnt seem to like all the notoriety that comes with too much exposure in Hollywood.
I can’t imagine what that did to her mentally! I hope she knows thousands possibly millions of girls wanted to look like her while the media was tearing her apart

Right! She will always be remembered and there are so many influencers now adays that definately won't be. Alicia Silverstone is not a tragedy, she's one of my favorite person and/or idols of the 90s!
THIS! I keep seeing the title “the tragic life of”. It’s so wrong to portray a person as if they’re already dead, and that their life was sad and horrible. Come on..
Yeah, I can't stand it when article writers call someone "tragic" or "sad", and throws them away. It's like - the best was once a long time ago. That is so reductive and rude and, frankly, embarrassing to the article writer. Small thinking.
She is a committed animal rights activist, runs her house on solar, has an organic garden and a bunch of rescue dogs. She has her own line of vegan supplements through Garden of Life. I don't think her life is tragic at all. It is actually empowering, she had the opportunity to slim down and become a super star but chose instead to chase after a life she really wanted.
@@caitlynm924 They meant she had the option to cave to the BS and "slim down", but she didn't. In the 90's, toothpicks were "in", which is disgusting, you're misunderstanding the comment.
It makes me so angry that women cannot gain weight or age, we have to remain young forever or we lose our worth entirely. Alicia looks just as beautiful now as she did when she was 15. She is just more mature.
@Mrs Blume My honest opinion is that many people with penises want to be a girl's "first." Their whole thing is "popping a cherry." I don't pretend to understand that impulse, but I abhor it.
The fact that people are holding up the looks of a FIFTEEN year old girl as some kind of sexual and beauty ideal says a lot about the absolutely disgusting tastes of a lot of people. Open pedophila. Attraction to literal children.
In the 90's through the early 2000's men sexualizing young girls was not only acceptable, it was applauded. Women were commiserating with alicia, and judging the 💩 out of Jim Carey for that kiss, while the men were high fiving him and wishing it were them 🙄 The sad/disgusting thing is, a lot of guys are STILL like this, they just pretend to be above it around women and keep it to guy talk 🤢
I'm so impressed with how calm and collected she was during those interviews. Broke my heart when she said "I'd like to eat a meal without running to my car and I'd like to just pet my dogs". She was a KID. Hollywood sucks ass. And she was not fat - what horrendous people to go after a kid like that!
THAT is Hollywood and the media machine. And dont make the mistake thinking they have changed, their new surface mentality they portray nowadays is still a farce to trick people into still supporting and fawing over them while they make the big bucks.
what is so ridiculous is that they were calling her fat when she was 5'5" and 130 pounds. like wtf?? that is an extremely healthy weight for that height and is no where near being considered overweight. so sad that back in the late 90's/early 00's having a "good body" literally just meant being underweight.
Yes you're right. I'm that right now. In 2000, in 6th grade I asked for liposuction for my birthday because I didn't fit into a 0-00 like some of my classmates and I always wore a sports jacket in middle school thinking my stomach hung over my jeans while sitting. I was average weight and within my BMI. I'm okay now with my body but thinking about how I was makes me sad sometimes.
It's so weird seeing things today as an adult that I grew up with as a teenager in the 90's. Alicia Silverstone was one of the girls I wanted to be. Back then it felt like she just kind of disappeared after Clueless. Watching this and learning things I didn't know then is so eye opening. She really was ahead of her time with her attitude and thoughts on Hollywood and life in general. I have such mad respect for her knowing all of this now. She is a true role model, not one that Hollywood just hands to us on a platter. I had no idea she was so young in The Crush and the Aerosmith videos. That's just so crazy to me that that kind of stuff was just seen as ok back then. At least we are trying to improve as a society, even if we aren't all the way there yet and may never be, at least we are striving to be better.
I wouldn’t say it was seen as ok, as much as it was sexualized and ignored. I’d say Hollywood actively fought to make it SEEM okay. I think the only people it seemed okay to were pedophiles and underaged girls. The fact that people could blame HER for her own over sexualization and being preyed upon is disgusting. Especially considering you can find articles calling movies like the crush gross from as far back as when it came out. Nobody wanted THEIR KID to be preyed upon, but anyone else was “loose” and “wanted it”. If it was seen as okay, everyone would’ve been like “But what’s the issue with that age gap? It’s normal.” The Crush attempts to say it’s WRONG, but because of the child.
@christinunya72 I totally agree to your comment and I am really shocked that his father, his protector and mentor in live sold her for that. She really is a strong woman without ANY back up.
We haven't evolved at all since then...just check all the underage kids still being sexualized and promoted as sex objects. It's a problem of a human heart, not the era or the century. Sex sells .
She also believes in bird feeding where she chews and swallows food and throws it back up on her children's mouth claiming that it is more natural especially since birds do it.
UGH poor girl's career started during the era of the industry being run by a hotbed of disgusting, predatory, manipulative men. Alicia was and is absolutely beautiful. I hate that media also was super gross and manipulative at the time as well. The same media that shredded Britney Spears and drove her to a breakdown.
Yeah um the women were just as predatory lady don't get it fucked up I could go on a deep dive 2x as long as this cid about the little oral Annie club that was ran by A WOMAN who trafficked groupies to bands such as areosmith and David bowie ,mic jager. These girls were 12 and 13 so get that divisive feminism outa here it's far more systemic than you can ever know
Right because it's wrong for men to be attracted to women but it's okay for men to be attractive to men. At least women don't *have* to deal with it in the back door. I wish my biggest problem in life is women (even older women) finding me attractive. But seriously I do have a problem with men lusting after women who are underage like in the film "The Crush," but 16 and up is arguable, especially if the other age is just 21. I wouldn't like it unless they were at least 18 but apparently the people in some states think it's okay.
This is so disgusting, she was literally growing up and getting her womanly curves and everyone shamed her for that. She literally looks so beautiful everywhere I’ve seen her, even today she is so beautiful. I’m honestly ashamed of our past as a society and hope that at least shining light on all these bad things will help prevent them from happening in the future. Sadly I’m sure more things like this will happen. 😢
It's very disgusting! What on earth did Jim Carey do to her!?!?!?! I didn't know he was such a JERK! How can he just forcefully kiss her like that. So disgusting 😢
Its the same today. Even worse Just look at Wonder Woman, Black Widow, Aquawoman, Catwoman etc. These characters are super heroes and who ever plays them has to be in shape - its not a girl in coffee shop role.
This girl is 5'5", the director demanded she gets her weight down to 105 pounds which would make her very underweight for her height. This is very clearly just pedophiles no longer interested when her features become for adult.
As a 40 yr old who grew up idolizing Alicia, looking back it really is sick how she was capitalized on like that. Everyone was looking to push the envelope in the 90's & it obviously hurt MANY. 🤦🏻♀️ Great video! ☮
The woman still looks the same today as she did at 16, yes she ages but gracefully and beautifully. They didn’t care about her appearance or if her looks would change 16 vs 20 yrs old, they were just turned off that she wasn’t a CHILD anymore.
This is a list of such gross appalling behavior by adults that should know better. My heart goes out to Alicia and hope she's in a much better place emotionally as an adult herself.
I love her sooo much! I always wondered why she didn’t get as many roles later on in her career. Hollywood and the media are so harsh on women. Makes me so sad. She looked great in all phases of her life and she’s super talented!! I was so stoked to accidentally stumble across her Tiktok
I’m sorry to say, but I think her career didn’t go so well later on… because she kind of lost her looks. Let’s be real, Clueless, Crush, Batman, and these roles she had early on were mostly due to the fact that she was young, blonde and pretty. As she got older, I’m guessing no one knew what to do with her anymore. By the way, I’m not saying she’s ugly at all… I’m simply pointing out that Hollywood is very shallow. I believe the same thing happened with Cameron Diaz… she had an amazing career… but again, most of her roles banked on the fact that she was gorgeous. As Cameron got older and was losing her looks… she began playing cringey, bitter old women tones until she stopped acting altogether.
I was really pleased when I saw her in Killing of a Sacred Deer. She wasn't very featured, but she was very good. She did great work with Yorgos Lanthimos's very specific style.
So you're telling me that Warner Brothers censored a kiss between Velma and Daphne in the Scooby-Doo movie because it's not "family friendly" but literally produced this pred atory movie about a teen girl and a grown ass man???
You know companies don't determine the rules regarding that right? It's a committee that decides what can and can't go in depending on the rating of the movie.
Well homophobia wasn’t “problematic” in media in the past right. Plus showing predatory behavior isn’t bad. Alice shouldn’t have played Darian an adult should of. But The Crush didn’t glamorize their relationship either.
Wow, I had no idea how much abuse and bullying at the hands of grown ass adults Alicia had to endure, and it's disgusting. They put her on a pedestal and then tore her down. A man would have never been judged that way. I'm convinced that Hollywood is evil, and I can't imagine trying to live in that world.
Even as a kid I remember the movie the crush not sitting well with me. That movie is a P words dream. It's really creepy how hollywood so openly se*ualized her as a kid.

I think it's important to point out that Alicia had a lot of things in her life that she cared more than being an actress, and that is part of the reason her career "failed", as some people might say. Once she got pregnant she chose to step away from her career, because she wanted to be a full time mom. Also, she is a vegan and has always been very involved with the activist community.
When I was 17 y.o. I dated a guy who was 25. He took me to a party with his friends, introduced me to the whole crowd and added: "...and she's 17." The whole crowd of 25+ year old dudes went "Ooooh!" It was weird and creepy when I think about it now.

Unfortunately that’s not how it works in the industry. Once you don’t do what they want you do they won’t push your career out there. You have to do it yourself. And since she seems aware of the industry and how bad they are she knows what they will want from her and she knows what she will have to do to make it.
I’m astonished she’s only one year older than me. As a kid, I thought she was like ten years older! And I didn’t know what an amazing person she is. I agree with her 1,000% regarding modesty and imagination. I wish there were many more people like her in Hollywood protecting young female actors.
I got to meet her in person years ago and she was one of the sweetest people you would ever meet. She was used as a sex symbol and it's sad that she was seen as that vs her acting.
I love that she isn’t afraid to speak her truth. I’m sad to find out she’s been burned by Hollywood but I’ve been following her since I went vegan years ago and I see her as a catalyst for the vegan/eco friendly movement and she seems so genuine.

I was a kid when Alicia rose to fame, and absolutely nobody had a problem with what the industry did to her at the time. I don't even have any recollection of Jim Carrey mauling her onstage at the MTV awards. It didn't make the news. Sometimes it feels like we have so much work to do, but then videos like these remind me of how far we have come already. If JC did that today, he likely would never work again.
I take it back, I recently saw an MTV clip with teenaged Shia Labeouf commenting on how inappropriate the relationship of 16 yr old Hillary Duff was with her 26 yr old boyfriend. He is literally the only person and I only saw the clip last month. There were public countdown timers on websites and radio shows for the day the Olsen twins became legal. Thank you for bringing all of this to light!
And rightly so, he shouldn't be making out with young actresses on stage... I know the 90s were times for creeps and pxxdo pigs to feast on the young female and male teen actors of the time. I remember the Crush movie, she was a great actress and it made Alicia (15) look like the stalker teenager girl obsessed in him which I always thought was ridiculous and grossly wrong....... She could have any school guy she chooses over that unattractive creep even though he was innocent in the film/ sort of.

While I was vaguely aware of the toxicity Hollywood culture, to see the mistreatment of children is the most disturbing. Emancipating a minor to work them harder is nothing more than a sweatshop with better pay. There is so much in this story that is sickening and wrong and it's painful to watch, but very important to bring to light.
I'm in the industry. Hollywood started getting around child labor laws. They often will film in Eastern Europe where they have less restrictions, can pay extras less, and overall filming is cheaper. Many see the industry as being progressive fighting to get Americans things like healthcare, open borders, and free this and that (paid for by tax payers) but they typically film overseas to save money that could go to Americans as well as illegally hide money abroad which again should be taxed and go to America. It's all for show like being an influencer at a BLM or women's rights protest making sure people take plenty of photos and then upload them on IG lol. They do the same with charity work.
Hollywood destroys kids and teens. Look at all child actors or teen actors. By the time they are in their early 20s they are phsycially and emotionally destroyed already, when most people their age are just starting life.
i would love to see alicia silverstone have a comeback movie. she recently had small roles in killing of a sacred deer and the lodge and while her screentime was limited in both those films, her performance was very memorable in both.
Alicia is delightful as a person. Period. What her Father did to her, getting her into the film industry, having her go for the specific films etc makes me have serious concerns about his intentions. Having her get emancipated let him off the hook for being a total perv. No father I know wants to see his 14 year old daughter writhing around the way she was made too. I hope the rest of her life is wonderful!
The fact that he was photographing her at 6 years old in a bikini and in sexual poses too, shows what kind of person this man was. I don’t know what kind of father would let his young child be cast in ‘sexy’ roles
That's so bananas that they were talking about her weight and appearance that way when she looks essentially the same in Batman as she does in Clueless?? In general it's obviously gross how the media and the film industry comment on women's bodies, but it's even more bizarre when they're commenting so negatively on the body of a teenager who is still growing and whose looks have barely changed anyway.

If anyone is into horror movies she’s in two recent ones called The Lodge and Killing of a Sacred Deer, I thought both were excellent. She’s not the lead but it made me so happy to see her in some cool creative films still doing her thing.
She was also in the barbershop sequel, she still looked the same she played one of the hair stylists and ended up dating a black barber that worked in the same salon She did a pretty good job , and people were saying she "fell off" doing that ...I always hated how the media and society acted like gatekeepers to what roles actresses or actors should take especially when a white female sex symbol does any interracial scene (Look at what they did to Elizabeth Olsen Melissa Benoist and Lily Rabe)

I didn't either Hollywood, tabloids, social media is so quick to criticize women like Alicia at least she isn't hooked on plastic surgery that quickly ages women & ruins a woman's natural looks. She, Nia Long, Angela Bassett are women who take very good care of themselves without going under the knife. @@catspaw3092 Plastic surgery is such a personal choice that I refuse to judge anyone for wanting it. "good looking kids turn into not good looking adults." "they signed up a beautiful teenager who looks like she's gonna end up not being a beautiful woman." i uh, find it weird that you're thoughts on kids and teenagers are that they're good looking rather than talented but ok executive.
That's the industry-thing: kids and younger teens don't really need to be talented in Hollywood at that point. What they need to be is: photogenic, cute, malleable, easily directed and with a good work ethic. And of course compliant to ruthless or neglectful parents who let producers and directors do what they want. Hollywood needs children (as long as they can't just generate realistic-looking, marketable AI performances), but they don't necessarily need to be more than mediocre. The bar for acting performances goes up during late teen years, when many kids are promptly dumped due to not measuring up acting-wise or because they go through an awkward looking teen phase physically. Still, the Disney and highschool productions etc need fodder every day. And most productions don't want to go the BH90210-route of the 90s and cast highschoolers with mid-20s to mid-30s old adult actors. So, teen actors it is.... And then comes the break to adult roles, when you can't get cast as a highschooler anymore. What's expected acting-wise and professionally goes up again: lots of former teen actors get washed out or dropped by agencies at this stage again. Unless they manage a sizeable number of followers on social media or attach themselves to a bigger star romantically, generating publicity and sales.

Me too she super sweet

Queen of the 90’s 👑
I met her briefly in Skater’s Alley in Old Towne Pasadena, CA, right before (or after?) Clueless premiered.
She was so down-to-earth I didn’t even know who she was until someone told me.
She was super pretty, casually strolled up in overalls and was like, “hey guys…”
The cute guy in our group and Alicia knew each other. (Of course!)
My 14 year-old self was in awe.
Chillest, coolest celebrity sighting ever.

He is practically salivating. And it's obvious that she was extremely uncomfortable and had to just go along with it. Yikes
She was so incredibly self possessed, intelligent and full of good character as a young girl. What a gem of a woman!

Wow.. how creepy all this grown ups men thinking that it was ok to over sexualize a teen agers. And a woman had to set her free.
And not only to work them harder but so that the sexual exploitation of this teenager was no longer against the law 😢😡
@@dustyrose5994 It’s evil. It’s no wonder so many of the child actors have major lifelong struggles given how the adults in their life treated them. 😖
She's coming back into the scene with older roles. Wife and mother roles and she's is Killin it!
Yes! I loved her in The Babysitters Club.
Man , when she said it’s Aliciiiiiiiiiia NOT ALISHA , I felt that .
i would love to see alicia silverstone have a comeback movie. she recently had small roles in killing of a sacred deer and the lodge and while her screentime was limited in both those films, her performance was very memorable in both.
Agreed! I loved her in The Lodge. It was a brave role to take on, too.
The Jim Carrey and Alicia Silverstone kiss was so disturbing!!! He's like 15 years older than her!!!
@@Notnoot2definitely sexually abused
That's so bananas that they were talking about her weight and appearance that way when she looks essentially the same in Batman as she does in Clueless?? In general it's obviously gross how the media and the film industry comment on women's bodies, but it's even more bizarre when they're commenting so negatively on the body of a teenager who is still growing and whose looks have barely changed anyway.

You're supposed to get in shape to play a SUPERHERO!!!!
What? You want Thor to have an average build?
If anyone is into horror movies she’s in two recent ones called The Lodge and Killing of a Sacred Deer, I thought both were excellent. She’s not the lead but it made me so happy to see her in some cool creative films still doing her thing.
She was also in the barbershop sequel, she still looked the same she played one of the hair stylists and ended up dating a black barber that worked in the same salon
She did a pretty good job , and people were saying she "fell off" doing that ...I always hated how the media and society acted like gatekeepers to what roles actresses or actors should take especially when a white female sex symbol does any interracial scene (Look at what they did to Elizabeth Olsen Melissa Benoist and Lily Rabe)
She was also recently in Senior Year with Rebel Wilson. I loved seeing her.
I just seen the lodge! Omg her part is crazy!!!

She also stars in an episode of American Horror Stories! It’s the last episode of season 2, I think it’s called “The Lake”

Wow, I never had any idea people were so critical of Alicia. I loved everything about her. I didn't care one bit what she weighed. I loved that she seemed socially conscious and cared about people and animals.
Unlike the Kardashians & others like them who to try to sustain their youthful looks some people fail to see that we as humans are going to get old there's nothing that can be done to reverse aging.
@@catspaw3092 Plastic surgery is such a personal choice that I refuse to judge anyone for wanting it. What I really want is for the general public to stop judging women's bodies for their own aesthetic pleasure. The pressure to be beautiful, no matter what you think is beautiful, is way way way too prevalent in today's society and I for one don't value people on their beauty but their heart.
@@Briteravenswan That's not how everyone else sees it appearance is everything to some people especially Hollywood which is sad & sick. But you have actors who aren't so good looking having great careers.
First you say "everyone else" then you say "some". You seem rather confused on your own points. There are plenty of actors I don't find attractive at all and I still enjoy watching them. I know plenty of people who think and feel the way I do too. Whether or not someone is beautiful, or that beauty is natural or not is just quite frankly none of my business and does not affect me.
The way female teens were treated in the 90’s and early 2000”s was disgusting.

It’s better to do it before they pass away. I’m happy this video was made.
That Jim Carrey scene made me sick
This is impeccably researched. Well presented. Thoughtfully written and brilliantly edited.
Excellent!
As someone who grew up in the 90s and 2000s, I'm so glad teenagers today don't have to deal with the ED-inducing weight scrutiny we did. Plenty of other things to be stressed about, but it's so sickening to realize how normal it was to criticize the appearance of children and teenagers.
People really don’t realise how the body positivity movement of today has really helped a lot of girls or spared them from EDs. I remember growing up on the tail end of the 2000s and how severe the body shaming was. You couldn’t go or look at a woman anywhere unless their stomach was flat as a board, literally every and any woman in any movie, tv show, ad campaign, even on Disney had to all be the same weight. How easy people forget.
In 2000, in 6th grade I asked for liposuction for my birthday because I didn't fit into a 0-00 like some of my classmates and I always wore a sports jacket in middle school thinking my stomach hung over my jeans while sitting. I was average weight and within my BMI. I'm okay now with my body but yes, you are right.
@@gorilla-grip-pussy-support7976 Oh yes I remember the low rise jean, Abercrombie & fitch era very clearly. I always thought something was wrong with my body back then until I realized those clothes were designed with one type of body in mind.

"good looking kids turn into not good looking adults." "they signed up a beautiful teenager who looks like she's gonna end up not being a beautiful woman." i uh, find it weird that you're thoughts on kids and teenagers are that they're good looking rather than talented but ok executive.
Wtf right?
