I really like her. And I think the commenters saying she’s “phony” are confusing phoniness with class. Ms. Turner grew up and lived in an era where one put his/her best face forward, kept private things private, and paused before simply blurting anything out. She had self-respect and clearly makes no excuses for her own mistakes and doesn’t place blame on others (and Bryant Gumbel asked her some pretty harsh questions which she handled with elegance, honesty and grace). Potty mouths weren’t in vogue even in 1982 and people were still civil. Some celebrity doing an interview now may seem to be open and blunt and classless (and therefore not seem “phony”), but I’m willing to bet they’re more dishonest than Ms. Turner is here. Society is spiraling backwards very quickly and it’s a damn shame.
Lana is a true Legend. Stars of her era were great to interview because they had that star quality that made them fascinating to watch and listen to. I just bought her book on Amazon and I can't wait to read it!
She's one of the forgotten one's in Hollywood. We here alot about Joan Crawford and Betty Davis. And rightly so...But not nearly enough about Lana Turner. That very unfair IMO!
Gosh for a Hollywood Movie Star, Lana is so down to earth, and honest....and even though she is older here, I still find her very attractive and beautiful with a great personality..x
Yes; it was too bad that she was killed off at the end of Season 2. Rumor has it that Jane Wyman truly disliked her. While she wasn’t nearly the gifted actress that Wyman was, the reality was that whenever Turner appeared on the show, the ratings would spike. It seems it was a case of jealousy. Wyman reportedly threatened to walk if Tuner’s contract was renewed for Season 3. The off screen tension translated beautifully between them on screen. Their scenes together positively crackled. FC was great from Seasons 1-3, good from 3-6, and pretty bad from 7-9. That last season was ghastly.
I can't believe all the sexist comments on here calling Lana Turner a tramp. So why not criticize Clark Gable, Eddie Fisher, Frank Sinatra, and Mickey Rooney as man whores as well? They slept with women that were from all walks of life, married, single, widowed, divorced, and even more creepy, some that were probably underage as well. They didn't give a damn either. I don't get these nasty comments regarding Lana Turner because she's a female and she's not supposed to sleep around as much as these male movie stars. I'll tell you one thing, this woman was all class regardless of her affairs.
The definition of “class” is purely subjective ; I think Kathryn Grayson had it.When asked how she managed to resist the charms of Mario Lanza, Kathryn replied, “It was easy, I simply didn’t allow it to happen”.The men you mention were pathetic but the kindest thing I can say about some of the Hollywood “beauties” is that they were sirens.Lana had “star quality” and delivered the goods expertly.
Thank you for uploading this. IMO, I felt Miss Turner got more beautiful with age. Even prettier here than 20+ years earlier when she did Imitation of Life. Just extraordinarily regal and so well spoken, so articulate.
I miss these real, in-depth interviews that they had on Today. They don't really interview anyone (and barely report the news). There really isn't anyone worth interviewing that I can think of.
He was right. Lana Turner was married 8 times, and none of them lasted as long as four years. Turner had a "fling" off-set with nearly every leading man she had (including Anthony Quinn) regardless if she was married or not. She was even quoted as saying that she slept with Alan Ladd because "even short men need love." She loved men, and apparently had a tendency to fall in "lust" rather than in love.
She really was beautiful when she was young. At least she was honest about her men and husbands. I'm at the library and this guy near me at the books is so ugly I don't see how any women would want him. And I'm not trying to be mean, but honest. She said she's a chosen celibate, I'm not I just haven't found the right guy yet. Her daughter is really beautiful too.
one nice thing I can say about him - is he was nice looking - I'd never noticed before - she was so pretty as a young woman but grew to have a hard look - but a true movie star !
I bought Lana's book, read it & have watched several interviews. In doing so, Lana's book revealed she wasn't a present mother at all. Her Mother raised her daughter Cheryl. It was apparent that Lana's primary focus was always her career & men & family was secondary. Despite she financially secured all, her behavior was tolerated most by her Mother & business people. I see a conflict in the interviews vs book yet with both she's yet to be honest in the choices she made? Several times over. I think she did what she wanted to do regardless.
can't believe how well he's doing in this interview - someone must be helping - people used to watch the news just to laugh at his mistakes - this is coherent !/
Lana is the definition of a true star and one of my all time favorites !Bryant commenting on her marriages is extremely sexist, if lana was a man they woulve been laughing and nonchalant about the 8 marriages..but because she's a gorgeous woman, people like Bryant get away with saying horrible comments..
She said herself she didn't love a few of her husband's when they married, she was avoiding the moral clause in her contract, when they got bored they divorced. No respect for marriage regardless of what she says. I prefer Bette Davis, at least she tells the truth.
Love Lana - however, she did not tell it all in the book - her daughter confirms she ''did'' have an affair with Sinatra for example. Her make up man and good friend said she was very sexual and treated sex in a very male way - however, i realise some things she couldn't divulge = even in 1982.
Interesting that Lana talks about Mickey Rooney. He said in his book that he had sex with her, got her pregnant, and she had an abortion. So the question is, who's lying? Also, there's a rumor that she had a tryst with John Garfield, but discovered that off screen there chemistry wasn't the same.
@tz3218 When Lana first came to Hollywood, Mickey was the biggest star in the world. He had all the girls. When he married Ava Gardner, it was said because she didn't give it up so easily. I see no reason why he would lie about Lana. She was no different to Mickey than many other girls at that time.
I think when Lana says she wants to speak the truth, it's her version. She was more about the bad publicity a story could bring her way vs the right thing to do.
Another interview with Lana claiming she wasn’t an alcoholic just a sipper for 10 years. You admitted you drop down to 80 pounds and you had to be hospitalized that was from the alcohol you were an alcoholic.
my gawd, this is actually the most candid i've ever seen her... she lied til her dying day about not fucking Gable and Sinatra... her book, although interesting, she did not tell the truth in LANA; THE LADY, THE LEGEND, THE TRUTH

I LOVE Lana Turner!!! She was VERY beautiful and also a very good actress. I've seen several of her movies from the 40's and 50's.
She was a stunningly beautiful lady, she comes across as very genuine and grounded to me. RIP to a true legend
She's one of the forgotten one's in Hollywood. We here alot about Joan Crawford and Betty Davis. And rightly so...But not nearly enough about Lana Turner. That very unfair IMO!
Lana looks absolutely beautiful here!❤️

I love Lana! I loved her movies and loved her portrayal of Jacqueline Perrault on Falcon Crest.

Wonderful, wonderful woman!!!! Love Lana Turner....
Fabulous interview! Thanks for posting this!
She says she had no talent at all when she started acting. I have to disagree: the first film clip showed a lot of talent indeed! Really good acting.

Postman always rings twice! John Garfield great actor!
Thanks for the post. Love her, going to start that book tomorrow!
What a classy lady
Very real. Different times So honest and genuine.
What is Bryant talking about? "Her obvious failure as a wife"....what about those awful men who were probably terrible husbands?
I know, right?? God, what a shitty & clueless thing he said there.
730ian To be honest the Golden Age of Hollywood really wasn't that Golden.
Exactly. Lana portrays herself as an innocent angel...almost as if she's still stuck in the 40's.
I don't think she was any picnic as a wife. Lana had DADDY ISSUES tattooed on her forehead.

Ziegfield Girl is one of my favorite movies! So glamorous and fun! What a legend.

Beautiful loved her in Imitation of Life

very thoughtful human
Loved her in cass timberlane. Ya I know I know.
Love this Lady ❤️ as well as all her movies.God Bless Lana.
Wow! I've not seen any of these interviews before! Where on earth did you get them from? Did you tape them all yourself back in 1982?
+Davidalp1 they appear to be VHS tapes of course one can tell by the quality, so yes i would say the uploader taped THE TODAY SHOW on VHS back in '82
Remember, there was a lawsuit of concerning Sony and videotaping.

Damn lana was beautiful!!! And so bright I can't understand her 8 marriages haha its hard to get once nevermind 8 times!!! She shouldn't have done it
She sounds a lot like Elizabeth Taylor, imitation of life best movie.
Sounds slightly drunk.
..and Peyton Place ('57)

She never. Talks about her daughter.
She did, in a another interview.
i had no idea she was a born again christian!!!

+mark allen but what a remarkable life and LUCK she had possessed, and i do stress the word luck...
Agreed
Absolutely ; if fans enjoy her movies, fine but Lana’s private life is of no importance in the scheme of things.
I've never seen, nor wanted to see, any Lana Turner films. Maybe one day.

Her daughter did confirm that Lana and Sinatra were lovers before she was born, but there is no proof whatsoever that she slept with Gable.
Muirmaiden Frank sure had his share of women. From Ava Gardner, Judy Garland, Lana Turner and Marilyn Monroe.
Cristabelle
You must be quite old and an intimate friend of her’s if you were around her at the time when she allegedly had those affairs.

Still acting

A goddess. And damaged goods.

That sounds very sexist.
