Something I find interesting to add : Mahiro's transformation did not free him from "role pressure" - he is free from the weight of the male role he could not assume, but in exchange he has to assume the role of a young female. The difference is that he has support doing it : he has a sister, and friends, who help him assume his new social identity. He can show weakness when he is with them, and won't be berated - while as a male, you're expected, as part of your "masculinity", to do everything alone without ever showing weakness. As you quoted, men who do not conform are seen as "failed men", the burden is on them -and the anime points that this feeling of failure, and the fact that needing help in the first place is already considered as a failure, are the reasons Mahiro adopted the role of "shut-in", the role expected of males who failed to be "real men".

holy shit dude , like i've seen a few analytical videos about this anime pop up in my recommended recently and even watched a couple , and what they had to say wasn't worthless from what i gathered , i still had issues with the premise , it did not persuade me to the direction of thinking onimai had any worth watching
that it was like 'ok good for it , but that doesn't make it that this is not just something non-fetish related to give the show a cover for what is still obviously just a fetish anime for the purpose of being fetishistic'
but seeing what you said about what you understand about it's premise/theming , if true , may actually quip my interest in possibly giving it a watch now....

I think you have hit the nail on the head in terms of Onimai's themes and tropes, especially the 'We like anime girls, not because they resemble reality, but because they don't, as well as our MC escaping the pressure of societal expectations. Notice that these are two-fold though -- the pressure of being OLDER and of being a MAN. In becoming the younger sister, our MC is freed from both of these pressures.
In some ways I see this as a branch of isekai -- it certainly has all the signs: Old, failure of an otaku man is whisked away into the entirely new world of femininity in which he is able to let go of his past, live a new life, and succeed.

But yeah, your explanation of Onimai being a story about Otaku/Hikikomori rehabilitation also resonates with me. It reminds me of an interview in the book 'shutting out the sun' where a hikokomori describes the attributes that got them rejected from society, and it broke me realizing that if this person was born in my country of Israel (which is also fucked for different reasons) they would be celebrated as pioneering individuals.

A hikokomori would be encouraged to pursue their personal obsessions, im not going to act like it's a good country (government of fascists and terrorists) but the point is that NEETs aren't inherently NEET, it's a failure to comply with societal standards and would not be an issue in a different society that accommodates them.

Once you get past that initial discomfort most would probably be surprised by the actual content. Sure it walks a fine line of acceptability, but it also has a very sincere innocence to it that's pretty refreshing, especially when it comes to the other kids in the show. I think the main reason people who enjoy onimai (me included) is because of how actually wholesome and heartwarming the whole show is. the fact that mahiro feels unmotivated to the society and resulting being a neet, makes mihari to be worried about him, and thus decides to change him to a literal her. the show mentioned how mihari and mahiro had been having a good brother-sister relationship until he became a neet. after the change mahiro started to adapt and understand how to be socially active and eventually made very amazing friends, and most importantly, the relationship with mihari. i do understand that people complain the anime being overly sexuallized, and i do think those parts should be reduced or even removed. that part aside, the story is actually pretty wholesome.
for the genderbend part there is also a possiblility that mihari wanted mahiro to be young and a girl was because that mihari missed their old good relationship when theyre young. it could be that she wanted her brother to go back to the past, having the good normal lives again, except this time mahiro is the little sister. i really appreciate the caring for mihari to mahiro despite him being a degenerate and help changing her life, re-experiencing the normal young lives from them.

great video bro! I'm so glad that other people see the bigger picture of this series. while there are some moments that fall into sus territory, the anime never explicitly expands on those ideas, but rather those situations simply came with the territory of becoming a middle school girl. instead the series focuses more on our main character's development. the transformation gave him a chance to start again, from a completely new perspective, and the interactions he has with the people he meets contributes to this development. on the side it also works on fixing the relationship that the two siblings have. I think the show is very wholesome and those who see a problem with the show are just projecting their own ideal of the scenario, which is more sus than anything.

hmm, both being supposed trans allegories...
Abstracted, Your Name does seem like a trans heterosexual relationship, but throughout, it plays with gender by presenting the way that a cis person in the wrong body would act instead of gender affirmation. The end pretty much settles that.
So if the author saw Your Name and was inspired by it... you don't get Onimai without putting in more trans allegory.
For starters, I don't think admiring spinny dress in mirror is very cis behavior...

Onimai is an amazing show for people who are shut in and have graduated college and are unemployed..........like me
Just the difference is his (protagonist sister) is helping him open up to the world and see a brighter side.
The male to female aspect is just to show how women naturally open up and have to set a normal routine to have a positive attitude.
As men don't suffer from the problems of women naturally they are taken back by how simple things matter for personal wellbeing.
Onimai is a great show and even though it's harsh about its censored content but being open and getting the message is what matters here.
I support uncensored content as the writer gets freedom to express his expresion every situation to situation.
I hope even in future these shows get released by closing the gap between emotional wholesome content and a better attitude.

When i talk about this to people outside japan (i live in canada) they always see it as a crusty old man liking small girls in anime, when it’s not really that. they also say basically the same thing about otakus: “degenerate people who’s only interest is anime and 2d girls” when it’s not at all that. everything goes a lot deeper than people expect and is a lot different than what people think. I think we can draw parallel to Mahiro with Konata from Lucky Star, an otaku girl that otaku viewers could relate to regardless of age or gender. I agree with your point that Mahiro being a little anime girl is more about the symbolism than an actual talk point on gender or perversion, as the viewers more or less are extrapolated in 'I'm Mahiro' moment compared to shows that expositive on their characters like most iyashikei genre, most notably Non Non Biyori. That's why I feel really weird when this show got so many praises and backlash from people that claimed what this show is all about. I feel that people read too much into an innocent show like Onimai. For me this is just a typical otaku media like Nanoha or Lucky Star.
I think a lot of western media is so out of touch with the cultures that they are trying to write, clearly the standard of journalism (especially in pop culture) has been degraded the past few decades. You can see how most of the article from big sites covering this sector are nothing but skin deep tabloid sensationalism, often cought up in the frame that is set by their own worldview trying to put pictures into frames that didn't really fit.
Anyway, that's my opinion. Also thanks for writing/creating this video.

And it's very true that with many the attraction to anime girls and fictional things is specifically because it isn't real and is fictional. And it's also interesting to see that the boom in cute anime girl centric anime from traditional story telling coincided with the economic collapse. It's also nice to see someone from the West saw that this isn't just pedo bait or trans allegory.

From my experience watching the show, I feel like a lot of people see some random part of it and immediately characterize it as lolicon pandering nonsense without even trying to look at it from any other perspective.
My expectations were extremely low when I started watching it, and I quickly realized there was actually a lot of depth, social commentary, and an exploration of anxiety and mistrust and social disorders. While there are some questionable scenes early in the series, the scenes themselves aren't questionable, it is the viewers interpretation of those scenes that make them awkward of uncomfortable. If you go to the museum and see a nude statue, it is considered "art" because the context you are observing the nudity in, but simultaneously if you are immaturely oogling the statue's dangly bits then the problem is you, not the statue.
    /rant
This may be a bit of a tangent, but I find it incredibly frustrating that modern viewership of anime and manga culture are constantly "teased" by the idea of loli garbage, essentially it is a trope that is incorporated into countless shows just to check a box and either make weirdly sexual jokes or uncomfortable scenes while simultaneously looking down on the viewers or readers. It's like saying "hey the animators or artists drew some intentionally perverted stuff for the audience, but you should all feel bad for looking at it". The "most risky" thing this show does is show some girls bathing in a public bath, nothing erotic or intentionally sexualized either. It's literally a "so I am a girl now, this is strangely less exciting than I thought it would be" and the sister character expressing disappointment in the main character's inability to even take care of their hair.
But detractors of the show will see a snippet from any particular episode and decry that it is the scum of the earth without any attempt at actually reading the _tone_ of the scene itself. How many idiotic shows have unnecessary "oh they fell and his head is in her crotch, isn't that just soOoOoOo awkward and funny?!" garbage in it just for the fanservice? Having some "Oh my god this show is so crude" response when the industry is literally full of that junk is pretty hypocritical in my opinion.
The problem is that the audience is being told they are perverts, while the industry pushes more and more content that reinforces the stigma.
    /rant
The show explores the unsettling social anxiety of the main character, being unable to be around lots of people, loud noises, fear of strangers, and even the kind of anxiety of dealing with phone calls or answering the door. It explores the re-introduction of someone into society and slowly building up their self confidence and ability to deal with the anxiety of being in public. Is the premise silly, yes, is the main character a pervert at the beginning before he becomes a girl, yes, but does that perversion continue, no. The perversion of the main character was just a symptom of anxiety and isolation, porn games and magazines were his outlet for stress. After the transformation, the main character becomes more and more embarrassed by his old way of life, and even looks at other young people developing there "interests" in a more mature way because of his past experiences and older mind. The main character starts to develop stronger empathy and starts to realize all the little things that go into taking care of him/herself and developing more thoughtfulness toward others. The most interesting part for me is the relationship with the sister, and the social pressure differences between being an "older brother" and being a "younger sister".
Overall, it's an interesting show. There isn't much action, and most of the episodes just cover the social interactions between the main character, their sister and small friend group. It certainly isn't some lewd ecchi nonsense. I consider it similar to "I got rejected, so I shaved and took in a runaway girl", another show about developing a healthier lifestyle because of interactions with someone else who dramatically changes daily responsibilities. I think a very important theme is the idea that we are more capable of change when our perceived roles and responsibilities are altered drastically, and without those drastic changes some of us are fundamentally unable to escape from a depressing, meaningless life.

your assumption of the gender transformation is one i agree with. theres actually quite a few stories out there, and webcomics included, with a similar plot about a male character undergoing some forced gender transformation and having their lives changed for the better because of it without any change to their personal interests and hobbies as the societal burdens are pretty much a doublestandard for whats acceptable for girls and whats acceptable for boys. and it was something speculated on long before the current era that if a guy was to have their entire biology changed like this, they would be having a very good time of it.

Im not saying the story itself doesn’t have value at its core, but rather the fact that it depicts suggestive representations of a child makes it impossible to give any credit to plot. There are levels of things Im willing to ignore for a story but I don’t think I can ignore the blatant issues with this one. The whole “Story is really good if you ignore all the sexualized children” narrative doesn’t really make sense.

Im gonna be out here and as a psychologist I ROOT for this commentary, amazingly done, because we aren't just here for the cute anime waifus (which are nice to look at, but not because THEY ARE MADE to look "lookable" but its because we were thought what to like and enjoy via parenting, tv, internet, and more) we are because it is highly relatable "BUT GREG, does that mean that everyone is miserable and relates to someone having a nice life enjoying mundane things?" it doesn't necessarily mean it, but let's say it does, are we here to judge the one escaping reality, or the reality he had to live through? Think about it for a second, we get judged but the system stays the same and more people join on this and we are still at fault (and we aren't doing drgs or stealing, or beating up people, or worse things AND YET, we get a whole of attention about how wrong we are because liking an anime girl A FAKE CHARACTER that is 10,000 years old but looks younger is somehow worse than money laundring, actual ped0s, how corrupt the system is, etc.) im only saying that we seem to be easy to get picked on, and that would be true, MOST (not all of us) have very bad social skills, let alone self-steem or some knowledge on feeling and how we use them, THIS IS STATISTICS most of the fandom is male, and to keep it short, what are we thought as males? Suck it up, keep bottling your emotions, don't be weak, be a man, protect someone else, nobody cares about you, be violent and show how stronger you are than everybody else and other super messed up things that we take for granted because "it is what it is" some of us are lucky enough to realize "No, i will not shut up, i will let you know my feelings" but most of the men aren't, AND ITS NOT YOUR FAULT. Glad i can find a space bring this up, this seems important, anyway amazing video, keep it up!

Isn't media analysis fun? While I disagree w/ you on some points, I don't think it really matters. I definitely can see your throughline on how you read the story's narrative and I can absolutely see where you're coming from. What's great about media is that people (even the same person at different points in their lives) can see different things from the same piece of media. The show does ultimately say a lot about escaping from the burdening expectation placed on you, even if I think it goes a little further than I think the story intends.
Also, it's interesting to see the different ways different peeps refer to Mahiro in their videos. You see lots of He's, Her's and even a few They's since it's kinda difficult to say where Mahiro sits at any given point in the story. Oh, and Oreko's are a thing, btw. Basically, while it's not super common, there are women that use Ore, either to sound tough or more masculine, etc. Not saying that's the reason Mahiro does, but it's something to remember. It's kinda like how -kun doesn't ALWAYS get used w/ just male characters. You'll see higher ups in a business call female staff below them w/ -kun. Gender in Japanese language is a wonky thing.

I take your point about Ore. But there's a part early on in the story where Mahiro get's hit on the head with a book and gets temporary amnesia. It's during that part where he forget his memories that he uses "watashi" to refer to himself, suggesting that the use of "ore" is intentional on Mahiro's part to retain his masculine identity or something.

@@gomi-san doesn't that mean its possible for mahiro to actually be a girl, if she refers to herself as watashi when she forgets she wasn't always a girl?
