    From what I've heard, part of the reason why their performances are so realistic and accurate is that they had real musicians in the studio performing the songs (and mimicking each character's unique traits), while the animators used rotoscoping to create the scene on the anime.

    I am still surprised how Bocchi the Rock become the biggest hit in one of the most crowded anime seasons in the last time.
    It was a very good video that added a lot of animation history into the mix.

    It's been so long since an anime has made me feel that same spark after so many years of stale, cookie-cut seasonal anime
    It was from anime that I took up studies in animation to begin with, but as time passed on, more and more anime lost that magic I saw, I could recognise the cheap tricks, and after awhile it became just lazy
    But this show has shown me just what a truly passionate team of talents can create, the story of this adaptation alone is already crazy enough
    Nowadays people judge animation in anime usually from the "budget", typically associated with action scenes, but I find it sad when people say that animators that work on said action scenes are better than those that animate on say, slice of life
    But from an animator's perspective, one of the hardest things to nail down is character acting in animation, how you can characterise characters JUST from their motion alone. It's not just "character (action)", even just the way a character walks alone.
    If you're able to show distinct acting differences between characters through their movement alone, that's what really makes the difference between the average and the stellar animation.
    You could make your characters do the biggest, coolest things, but when it comes down to it, the truth is that the smaller the actions, the more _real_ they will feel

    YES! BOCCHI IS A 10/10 SHOW glad i stumbled upon this hidden gem
    reminds me of another relatively recent anime that's also a masterclass in adaptation, "Eighty-Six". Very different genres but similar in how the anime ELEVATES the original. I wish my favorite mangas would be animated by awesome animators like these.

      I'm a big fan of 86 too. I actually started reading the light novels after watching the anime. Avid and Voices of the Chord are such good songs.

    4 koma manga is a double edged sword because you generally don't have a lot to work with. Some do simple adaptations, but the staff for Bocchi went above & beyond to elevate it to being a standout hit.

  • @lesath7883
    @lesath7883 Рік тому +6

    I'd argue that the manga being a 4koma is precisely why the anime is much better than the source.
    Not only it can pick and choose strips to adapt, it can even mix them into more complex scenes.
    This is why I prefer the anime for Lucky Star.
    I mean, Gekkan Dhoujo Nozaki-kun.
    Errr...
    Probably Bocchi is not the only 4koma ehose anime is better, and rather anime adapted from 4komas NEED to be more creative precisely because the original work is a 4koma.
    Still, Bocchi goes over and beyond.
    Loved it.

      I'd argue that Nozaki is better as manga tho. Firstly because each page is actually one 4-koma so there are plenty of spaces to appreciate the detailed drawing. Secondly, the topic being about manga-making, so the related jokes are explained better in manga form. Which is also why Bocchi is better in anime because the topic being music kinda impossible to convey in manga form alone.

    Real talk, this video made me tear up a little. I'm so happy that the directors love for the source material is shown through the anime, and your appreciation for that love shown through this video. Seriously, thank you for making this video. It was beautiful.

    Good animation is beautiful movement, creative and varied presentation, style changes. The show did a phd on film possibilities(2d,3d,crayon drawing, real life, paint art, cgi, 4:3 ratio, stop motion, cartoon,). And super detailed background. Camera angles that keep changing and is fun. (compared to tv show that just show 2 people talking for minutes with 2 close up shots and 1 combine shot...)

    Every now and then, a piece of pure magic comes together. For most people coming out of nowhere, passion meets talent, in the right place at the right time - and greatness is born. Arcane S1 was one such piece, Nichijou (to me) was another, and now Bocchi hit Mount Olympus. A magic moment of animation.

    Bocchi the Rock's great. The psychedelic animation during Bocchin time (love that btw) really drives home just how much inner turmoil actual anxiety can cause. I've thankfully only really experienced it in its extremes a handful of times, but, yeah, that's pretty much what it feels like. Disarray, tenseness and just general disorientation is pretty much how I'd describe it and how the Bocchin time animations feel when they quite literally rip Bocchi out of the show's reality into her own mind space. I think that's something extremely difficult to convey with anything other than animation (and music, I'd argue)
    Something funny I noticed is that while I like listening to music, I have absolutely no ear for it apparently, because when they were out of sync, I didn't notice it at all until it was pointed out. I'll need to rewatch the show.

    I really learned a lot in this video! Great stuff man!
    I kept getting recommended this from a video I made on Bocchi about a week ago. Its really interesting how you used Bocchi as a way to teach the viewers about the history of animation and how its been developed over the years and culminated into Bocchi. Super super cool way of educating people.

    2:11 ...that switch in animation is literally part of the gag, as evidenced by the change in vocal performance as well as authenticity of the style of street performance it's emulating.
    Horrible example to use for that line of dialogue. It had absolutely nothing to do with "cost cutting"

    • @dvillines26
      @dvillines26 Рік тому

      actually this is a deeper level joke - that scene isn't a cost-saving technique in BTR, but the scene is referencing an infamous cost-saving technique from KareKano
