One thing I've learned is invest in quality shoes. They last longer and also help prevent feet problems in the future.
I really agree. When I was a teen, (the 70's) my "long and very narrow" size 9N was very hard to find in both a stylish and "affordable" shoe. But times have changed--9N is a common size now, and I have been able to find well-made affordable styles that truly fit my foot.
Great tips. A few specifics for me are:
1) spend more on flats/low heels as those will be the shoes you reach for when you need to walk a while. You'll rarely walk enough in your high heels to wear them out even if they're cheaper
2) don't spend on purse trends, rather spend on the most practical style for your lifestyle in your most used autumn-winter colour and your most used spring-summer colour
My mom always taught me about clothes, "If you have to talk yourself into buying it, you don't really want it." This video gives such good advice to avoid that and instead to talk yourself THROUGH it. You give such great questions for making the right decisions. BTW, I worked with a new thrifted scarf yesterday and enjoyed what you taught us. Appreciate you, dear!
Is it a 10? If not, skip it.
I need to out that quote in my wallet. Lol
Sharing a quick story. I found a leather shoulder bag I really loved, but it was $600. I searched various internet sites for it used & at a lesser price. Couldn't find it. Then I found a used Dooney that looked so similar I went for it. It was $130 and I love it. It was obviously never used, had all the tags, paper, and dust bag. It isn't the higher end bag, but it gives me the exact same look & silhouette. So your tip about thrifting speaks to the single Mom on a budget, which I am.🙂
One day I was in a charity shop and a woman was at the counter with s bag she wanted. She was saying it was it was priced too cheaply. The shop employee said that people would complain if things were too expensive.
She said that she had been looking at the bag online the night before.
It was great that she set the intention to have the bag and there it was.
Dooney quality is 100% and all American made. They truly last a lifetime if you use them properly. I tend to wait for their sales but am never disappointed.
I found the same type of thing vintage, made in Italy, gorgeous leather, perfect colour, seemingly never used, pristine lining. And only $50. Score!
I also have a used bag Dooney & bourke. It's leather is great similar Gucci but price is very low.
Audrey, could I request a BLAZER COLLECTION video? I'd love to see your collection and hear the story of when and were you got them. I'm developing my own blazer collection and all but one was thrifted. Luckily I found several last time I went thrifting that were well made, quality material, the cut and style I love, and in my size 10P (very unusual) and for $7 each. I was over the moon that day.
Hey Audrey!
Even though I’m a gentleman, I’ve been enjoying your videos. As a result of this, I’m able to apply your amazing tips to my own personal style. Also, I’m able to help my sisters on some style tips and hacks that I believe one day would be of great help to that lucky woman.
Please were you able to find your signet ring🤔?
I had been wanting to add a classic trench coat to my wardrobe and I found one at my local church thrift store. It is a navy London Fog and it fits me perfectly. Quite a find for twenty dollars. 💝
London Fog is always a great find!
Wow! Congrats!
Good for you. Enjoy your purchase. 😍
That’s a fantastic find! Congratulations! 🌺
This collar on your white shirt really suits you. It’s delicate and different.
I actually meant to invest in a nice wool scarf after a year of planning. Yet bought one second hand 10 times less the money. It has a better color, structure, yet it is not 100% wool. Still feel happy.
Keep your eye on estate sales. I scored a lot of pashmina shawls and wool scarves this way…oh, and the cashmere I found….💕
Second hand clothing in my country are so worn out that it's more affordable to buy a new thing.
6 Questions To Ask Before You Buy:
1. Is this a timeless essential I will wear and use in many ways, years, etc.?
2. Will I wear this AT LEAST 1x week in a given season?
*3. Have I owned this item at a lower price point and worn through it?* (Or gotten close to wearing through it?)
4. Can I easily style this with at least 5 other things in my closet?
5. Is this item in a color that will compliment my color palette?
6. Can I upkeep this item? (Can I keep it beautiful?)
Q3 is new-to-me and super helpful! I’ve always shied away from dry clean only items, subconsciously factoring in Q6. I’d ask myself Q4, would I wear this with other things, without the exact #5 items. Q1 is hard for me to answer as I’m not super fashion literate.
first, thanks for typing out all the points; i was looking for that in the comments!!
second, about your Q1: i'm no fashion expert, but i think of "timeless classic" in opposition to "trendy." :) i find that items that burst onto the scene don't last very long. they might blow up on IG/tiktok, or they're suddenly in all those stores that are notorious for stocking up on trendy items, then when the trend fades, you'll likely never see them there again (think urban outfitters, f21, the usual suspects).
Instead, you might think of things that always work, especially certain staples.
If you're looking to get a little deeper, you could even look at pictures of fashion from recent decades and ask what has survived and might look just as classy today as it does in the pictures. I find that looking into the past helps me look forward at what could stick around for a long time! : ) hope this helps a bit!
I found a beautiful Jones New York sheath dress for $1 at Goodwill. My purpose is to only buy solid brands and classic styles (and think about what's in my closet) and not get tempted to buy tons of stuff because it's all under $5.
I’m 61 and love your videos on classics. Wish I would have started building my wardrobe years ago but it is never too late.
I'm 60 and am just now able to say I LOVE my closet. I just wasn't as clear about who I AM in previous decades to build a wardrobe that could be a legitimate extension of me. I am glad I am doing it now :-)
When I was younger and my parents paid for my clothes I used to just buy everything I even slightly liked. Now that I pay for everything myself I've become a lot more picky. It's exactly as you said, you know what you'll wear and what will just hang in your closet. These days I can stand in a fitting room and love a piece and still not buy it, because it's something I wouldn't wear regularly (enough) or it doesn't fit the rest of my wardrobe. I loved your take on this topic, especially about the upkeep of your garment or shoes, which is where I struggle. Thank you for your another great video.
20 seconds in : You're so elegant today. Wuff! The structure and femininity of that shirt is absolute perfection. ❤️ Back to the video!
I was planning to go out today without belting my pants but when I saw her belt I changed my mind. She's effortlessly chic
I had the same exact thought!😅😂 it somehow is making her complexion just burst and shine and look so incredibly enhanced 😮
Dear Audrey! 💫 Your style, ideas, soft voice & your amazing eye for aesthetics are very much appreciated & loved ❤️
I try not to buy really expensive items because then I never wear them. I'm too afraid of ruining them so they sit unworn. It's a matter of knowing yourself...
Please do top 10 tops, pants, accessories, etc from your wardrobe and why? Make a series on that.
This video was, as always, perfectly timed. I had put 3 items in an online cart yesterday, and as is my practice, "hit the pause button" to make sure they were still strong contenders after 24 hours. After reviewing your list of questions tho, I see that I was filling emotional space instead of closet needs--you're the best.
OH MY GODDDD. That white blouse is DIVINE!!!
Your outfit today is stunning. The belt, the white blouse, absolutely beautiful!
Oh boy did I nearly fall into the trap of "expanding my style" by way of taking on someone else's style, only to realize that while it does look good on me, it's not ME. And it's only a "nearly" because I never took the tags off and I just slipped back into the store within their return window. I bought some beautiful items, but I had to be honest about the fact that I struggled to feel like me in them.
Some great questions here. I would add these questions: Is this purchase in my budget? Is this item fairly priced? I might love a designer handbag. It might be my colour, my style, something I would use every day. But if I think it's too expensive and beyond my budget, I won't buy it, unless I can find it second hand.
This is so true. I have costly boots that were worth it. The hand stitching and comfort is amazing.
Boots for me have also been where I'm willing to invest. I only have invested in ankle boots, but finding a pair that truly fits my narrow foot has been worth evey penny I mught have spent. Having happy feet is a top priority for me :-).
@@allthingswavy6420 better to have fewer shoes that are comfortable. I found a black pump that fit my long narrow foot and invested in another pair in a different color. They also fit with colors in my closet.
@@rethacarriere2054 Right? I also try to have a couple of the same item (in different colors) so I don't wear them out so fast--lol
Can we take a moment and talk about Audrey's blowout! Gorgeous hair in today's video. Audrey, you look so glamorous‼️
Yes, I noticed it immediately. Her hair always looks nice whether it's naturally wavy, in a ponytail, or like this video. Just beautiful.
Audrey, I like to think I have noticed that you've been training your speaking voice. I just wanted to acknowledge how spot on it is in this video. Smooth, graceful and authentic-feeling!👌
Yes! So lovely! If you look at her videos from 3 or more years ago, her voice was very different. I find this inspirational.
Brava, Audrey! I have learned to invest more in winter shoes (I work on my feet, and I need them to be waterproof because I walk to commute), dark trousers (in heavy rotation both for evenings and office wear), fine jewelry pieces (instead of bold, trendy sets), really supportive bras (not cheap ones) and real leather goods (good-bye pleather). I used to spend lots of "little bits" of money in costume jewelry, faux leather, and fast-fashion tops and dresses that lasted me only a couple of months before they were faded, peeling, or misshapen, but now I know better than fall for something simply because it's on sale or at my fingertips. And, since I buy higher quality things for which I often had to save for months, I find that I take the time to care for them properly and lovingly. I have learned a lot about sustainability (and myself) through the thoughtful curation on my wardrobe, and you've been of great inspiration, so...thank you!
Good question: Can I match this with five other garments? Makes you think outside the box and really see if it belongs in your wardrobe.
I spent extra money for a good wool peacoat five years ago and I wear it every winter when the temperature drops below freezing, which is quite often where I live. It has been a worthy investment for my closet ☺️
I did this as well! I had "appropriated" a wool pea coat of my daughter's when she left home and I wore it so often, I purchased a new one. Soft gray, Italian wool, yep, it was a great decision
You would look amazing in a long emerald green dress
I always buy high-quality garments although they're at a higher price. but I'm willing to pay for that bcos I know I defo would wear them weekly. i have a very small wardrobe and am very particular with my choices. rather than buy them 10 clothes at 100$, I would pay more for 1 or 2 garments for 100$. my circle won't understand why I made that choice. I just stay silent cos I don't want to hear their critics on how or what I spent my money at 😆
I'm the same! I stay silent and enjoy my outfits in silent 😆definitely can't tell my boyfriend about how much my things are
Yes each person has a way they handle their purchases but I agree. There are things that make sense to spend money on and to organize your wardrobe accordingly . If I want something really trendy I will see d less knowing it will go out of style in a short time. My latest purchase was a black jacket/blazer. Am now looking for a skirt and pants as I need both to go with the jacket which by the way can be teamed up with my jeans and dresses
Same!!!! I never spoke with friends about clothing because they'd never understand my point of view
Outstanding video! Solid, practical advice & many tips I hadn't heard before. BTW I immediately noticed how different and radiant you looked. New make-up & hair style? Stunning...
You always look great but you took my breath away today. Your hair looks perfect. Love ya the classic outfit but an obsessed with the details On your white shirt. Lovvve the belt too. You are absolutely adorable!
Audrey would like to see a video showing how to match different colors and how to accessorize. For example what are your favorite colors for 2021-22 fall-winter season ? Thank you, love your style.
Ooooh, search her channel! She has a "color" series on how to wear red, green, yellow, blue...and all the combinations one can make with different shades of that color. It's a fantastic group of videos!
Funny, but I am wearing a thrifted top I bought at a thrift shop in NYC as I watch this. I don’t mind pre-worn clothing. You can get some quality items that you might not be able to afford brand new. Plus I like wearing something that everyone else is wearing at the moment.
By the way I adore the architecture in your town 😍
Audrey would you do a video that discusses pant and skirt lengths? You wear your pants short in general, and it looks edgy and stylish to me. I would appreciate a discussion on different lengths for different styles, etc.
Audrey, this video is so necessary for all of us! Following your valuable advice, I hope to control my urge to just add one time piece of fashion, I will put that piece back and laugh, and say I walked away!👏👏👏👏
Hi Audrey- would love to see a closet tour and how you organize your clothes. Thanks Indiana
And I can predict, for myself at least, time will not come soon to invest in closet at all))
So it is a splendid idea to get used to thrift high quality as an alternative to buying cheap on sale.
Thank you, Audrey, you inspired me to find thrift stores at my location. Yesterday I closed all my winter needs spending just the amount that was easy for me. And all three items are miraclously the ones I needed and immediately adored.
They are better by quality and shape and even color that the alternatives I found new on sale.
For all of us I guess. Difficult times… Also, there are a lot of good quality unknown brands there, that we can try, instead of the famous and expensive ones we already know.
I recently bought a Stunning purse made by hand of wood, crochet and a really good quality cotton in the inside parts. Really practical and beautiful. I found it on a trip from my father-in-law’s hometown, for let’s say 10 times less then if it was in a mall, from a famous branch.
I received so many compliments since I bought it and didn’t spend a kidney.
I so agree. I’d much rather have good quality secondhand than brand new poor quality and overpriced.
Most of the stuff I donate to thrift stores are those cheap pieces I bought brand new on sale. Some are donated with tags still on. Most of my wardrobe is second hand. The junk gets purged every year….the best is kept.
That's fantastic, Yasmin! And I bet the pieces you found are not "repeats" that you'll see everyone else wearing as you walk down the street or scroll through Instagram. GOOD move!
You look wonderful in this video! That shirt is so sharp! And your hair looks really pretty! 😀
I so agree with your comments Audrey. You look absolutely amazing too. Thank you, as always, for your wonderful insight and inspiration 😊 💕
This was such a great video! I'd love if you did a "breaking in a leather boot" video - I find that to be such a barrier for folks moving in to investment shoes, and boots particularly, because we're so used to the instant comfort construction of less expensive or plastic shoes. I definitely personally struggle with putting the time in to break in my boots and pre-planning for how long I'll be walking around or what special socks to wear, and it's just easier to grab a soft shoe and then I take forever to break in shoes! I'd love to hear your experience with your ankle boots!
( using husband's YT acct. ) As an equestrian who has made a living while wearing boots ( all seasons & weather extremes , barn chores 7 dys. a week , horse showing different disciplines using various types of required boots , etc. ) , the best thing is to use what I call the " ahhh... test " . That is , when you try on new boots & they feel so good / right for you that you simply go " ahhh ... " as in yes , super comfy , I could wear these all day starting right now - then buy them ! Also , buy the best , care for them properly , & they will " earn their keep " in the long run / cost per wear .
I own many pairs of ankle boots, expensive & inexpensive, and have NEVER had to break them in. If they don’t feel comfortable right out of the box, they are a firm DO NOT BUY no matter how nice they appear. Keep looking and you’ll find the perfect pair for you. Good luck!
My personal test here is that if it needs breaking in, I won't buy them. It either fits perfectly and I could walk in thrm right on yhe spot, or they don't get bought. I have come across amazing boots and shoes but if they did not click with me from "comfortability" pov I would drop them. Took me a whole to reach this point but here I am. Nothing that needs so much pain as breaking in will make my life better. Also I may have some childhood trauma about it... 😂
Thank you 😊 I watched this more than once.
The point about being able to take care of the item is very important. I love nice materials but this is what is always preventing me from buying cashmere for example. I am just not the type of person, who can maintain caring for my clothes so much and I have accepted it now.
My mom taught me how to thrift shop and alter clothings. 🥰
for the last few years, I have been on the hunt for the perfect leather jacket. I currently have two black ones I bought second-hand, and although lovely jackets, they don't suit me in the ways I wish they would; one's a tad too short, the other a tad too long with no shape. I wear both but for very different outfits, as neither suit the other. Today I found a beautiful brown leather jacket and I love it. I love that it enhances a simple look, and warms it up in a way that a black leather jacket can't. As much as I love this jacket, I feel like I'm just adding to a collection rather than finding the one. I'm not sure whether to keep the brown leather jacket and keep searching for the perfect black one. or just return it and keep searching for this perfect jacket. My answer to the questions in this video are all yes, except maybe number 5 (as I wear a lot of colours and not all suit brown), but I know for plain outfits which I do wear, the brown would suit a lot better than a black.
Great tips. I totally agree with your list of questions. I have had to work hard not to shop to alleviate stress. I usually found things I loved but I really had too much. I probably still do but I put things away for the season and pull them out again and they feel new. I adore second hand shopping and have really scored some great pieces that I have worn for years.
I’ve had to curb and manage my shopping compulsion that‘s also related to alleviating my stress as well! It started to hurt my finances and I stopped before it was too late, but it’s nevertheless something I’m always trying to work around because I can easily pick up so many things in that short window of being stressed/sad. Second hand shopping and thrifting is definitely a healthy thing to get into for so many reasons - all the best to you!
Love your channel. Thank you for what you do. I have learned so much. I love that Camel coat. I may need to add that to my wardrobe after some investigating. Also thank you for introducing me to the David Kibbe image identity method. It makes so much sense, and has helped me feel so much better about myself. I thought there was something wrong with me, even though I have all the right parts in all the right places. Turns out I have just been buying the wrong items. 🤷♀️
This is so timely for me. Always so helpful! 💕
Been thinking about this topic a lot. I had my own rough idea of investment pieces, but your questions really helped me be more specific about my choices. Thank you for always producing such high quality content!
Me too. Thanks
I love your videos. They’re very informative and pleasing to watch.♥️♥️♥️
I love all the outfits you modeled in this video. Boot length is hard for me to decide .
Love the 'pair with at least other 5 things' tip! This will help with editing wardrobes, too! Thank you 😊
Yes! Charity Shops FTW!
They're my first option every time. Only if I don't find what I need in any charity/thrift/vintage shop, I go to a mall or fashion store.
Thank you Audrey for these tips! This is really an eye-opener for wise spending 💕
Fantastic questions to make before spending a lot of money.Thank you
Your black slingback’s , ❤️❤️❤️❤️Allways looking for them in your videos ! Georgious !
Your style is so effortlessly cool, from head to toe. Love the intentionality and thought that goes into then pieces you select.
Honestly, a lot of guys out there could be inspired *and* learn so much from women as far as styling goes, which is a huge part of the reason why I love this channel. ✨
I agree, because while I am a woman, my style is quite different from Audrey's. Not a problem -- the way she approaches fashion, there is something to learn independently of your style, and so apparently, independently of whether you're a man or a woman as well 😊
@@glamdragon Well said, Alex! I think for me, personally, the way I approach fashion is there is always something to learn no matter where the advice is coming from; gender shouldn’t even be in the equation 😌 Curious to know what your style is like and what tips you’ve picked up from this channel
Thanks Audrey, wonderful advice! 🙌🏻❤️
in my country, it's now hard to buy 2nd hand. Everyone's bulk buying from thrift store and selling them in a triple price..
Having been watching your videos for a while Audrey, it's really made me think before I buy and it also has saved me wasting my money.
Thank you for sharing such great tips. Remain blessed xxx
I am an ankle boot girl! I wear them all the time, even though I have lots of pairs! I am looking for a blazer but haven’t seen “the one”. So I have been a good girl and haven’t bought one just to fill the gap! I did find a long black coat sweater ( looking for a long time) and a pair of black jeans that cat hair didn’t stick too! Love your advice!
I'm also "on the hunt" for a wool blazer. I saw one at the end of the season last year that I LOVED but my size was not available. So I've kinda held that one in my mind hoping the Universe will offer it up this year--lol!
Im 15 seconds in and let me just say WOW i love your outfit today!! The whole look is beyond elegant😍
I also love thrifting😍 Thanks for your tipps 👌🏻 Your videos are so relaxing to watch, yet so educating, that's why I am really grateful for your high-quality content videos ✨
The looks you showed during this video were exquisite.
You are my very favorite influencer now.
I thought I would wear my navy leather moto jacket regularly for years as I had worn a green leather jacket lots. It fitted well, felt beautiful, and I wear navy a lot. However, It's too warm for summer and gets wet the rest of the year, the collar style is too heavy for me, and it's just too much navy worn with most of my outfits. I now have a better checklist for what I'm buying and am better at rejecting items that only nearly meet it.
Wow Audrey! You look amazing in this video. That outfit really fits your flamboyant gamine lines and looks stunning on you. 💞
Watched this today to help me decide on a purchase. I went for it!
You always give such practical tips. I really appreciate you, Audrey.
That was great, Audrey, ty!
I have a long way to go, but I am so grateful for you and your channel.
I was never into spending a lot of money on purses. Didn't matter to me but shoes and sweaters is where my money goes.
You are such a gift to my life! Can you recommend where I can take a test to define my fashion type when it comes to personality and body type? Much love!
Is Audrey THE loveliest human alive? Please 🙏 can more people be like Audrey!!!! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Great video. Love your shirt!
So helpful--ALWAYS 🥰
Thank you!
Excellent video !
Your hair looks fantastic!!!
Thank you for suggesting thrift store first !!!! 🤝✊🙏♥️
Audrey. You are always a good source for inspiration ❤ on how to find and evolve our personal style ..with that siad. I really like your black booties with the gold zippers...can you please tell who they are from and if they are still available? Thank you.
Thanks for this practical video content. Oh, yes, knowing those good-quality brands when shopping second-hand is important. 😁 When figuring the cost per wear when it becomes very low is also exciting. 😁
Great tips
Your hair looks so 😍
Love your new hairstyle!
Do you think you could do a video on blazers and what to look for in quality of that item? What fabrics are the best for what season, etc? Thank you!
Audrey you look stunning in this videos! Gorgeous!
Lovely as always! I think I once watched a video where you talked about ankle boots more precisely Chelsea boots I think it was more in depth, but I can't seem to find it now. Or am I just making this up in my mind ? 😁 I'm asking because I'm looking to invest in a good pair :)
Thanks so much !
Enjoying your videos, Audrey. I'd like to get your opinion on style services like Stitch Fix.
Great video Audrey and you look absolutely beautiful 🌸
I love her voice
OMG! love your flowery skirt... any ideas from where you can get a similar item?
Thanks for these tips, Audrey! Just one (unrelated) question... have you found your lost pinky ring or did you have another one made? Looks beautiful.
Commenting for the algorithm 😁
I love to thrift shop
Please tell us what shoes you wear, especially the heels because I cannot find comfortable stylish heels but you seem to wear them so effortlessly.
I like new (newly bought) so I don’t spend money on clothes, shoes, bags, and accessories ($5 to $20 is my range). Items I bought last year are already forgotten or in “to be sold on line” pile. there is no point spending a lot for disposable things.
The burgundy colored boot, wearing with jeans and long camel coat…who makes them? Love your simplistic style
Ooops…It was with the gray coat
