Hello, Audrey! I grew up in South America during the 50’s and 60’s. Being a Catholic continent, it was common for women to dress in mourning much of the time. As a young girl I always admired how the elegant ladies dressed so beautifully in black even in the hot climate. They made their “widow’s weeds” look so chic and cool in spite of the sweltering heat of the tropical sun, always carrying a fan, of course!
My family is from Sicily, Italy, when I see all black clothing, I think of a widow in mourning. Personally, I think women, especially on the East Coast, wear way too much black. Here in Los Angeles, black is too hot. However, your incorporating color, makes black look new!
Black is my favorite color! I live in Hawaii, where it’s year round summer. You’re right- it’s hides sweat and it’s an easy reach to look chic and put together with little effort.
I am an older lady, 70 next month, who loves your channel and your suggestions. I would appreciate your guidance for someone my age who likes to dress stylishly but age appropriate.
Gosh I appreciate this woman so much. As a guy, she’s the only UA-cam influencer I watch. No gimmicks, solid advice. I recently adopted black for work. In sales, visiting accounts, my work capsule is 3 black lululemon polos, 2 black ABC pants and 1 light grey ABC pant. I wear either wear all black, all white, or black and white low top adidas (Stan smith or Superstars). I relish never having to think about what I’m gonna wear. Wash weekly, repeat. Yup, 3 pants, 3 polos, 4 pairs of sneakers = 365 days of outfits. When I want to spice it up I toss on a different signet ring (have 4, two gold, two silver) or toss on a different necklace. The jewelry is mostly Tiffany so it’s kinda fancy, haha. Thanks Aubrey, you’re a ⭐️! P.S. the bulk of my stuff comes outta eBay. Why spend $100 on a polo when people are selling them for $20. 😂
Black linen is one of my favourite fabrics! And I love Audrey Hepburn too! Thanks for sharing your tips! Although I do love wearing black, it's very hot when the temperature is high! Probably need loose fitting styles for those hot temperatures in black.
I love that you say that anyone can wear black! Black is my soul neutral, and I have avoided getting colour draped because I would refuse to give it up if they told me to!
Hello ma'am 😊 i begun loving specific of this outfit colour when i reached my 50 ❤ i am now turning my senior age this coming Sept., Happy to reached your comment here 🤎🖤💙... because i got a first doubt if i continue wearing these colours when i am on my 60's Btw, may i please to have you as my internet friend 🥰
Hello Audrey, generally when I wear black, I accentuate my makeup (a red lips). I also like to wear a black dress for the evening which remains timeless and classy. Thank you for all these explanations.🖤🖤🖤
I love black outfits. Yesterday for church , I wore a black chiffon skirt with a chiffon olive green long sleeve blouse with black pumps and I accessorized it with blue turquoise. I have a lot of black color outfits .
Thanks, Audrey! My Mom showed me how classy & versatile black clothing is to have as part of a wardrobe. If something I am purchasing comes in black, I am likely to buy it. Thanks for your content, always some of my favorites! 😊❤
I have loved & worn mostly black since I was about 13 years old (I'm 51 now.) I love that it's classic and looks great in a variety of shapes and silhouettes. I live in a hot climate and have recently been adding more natural fabrics to my wardrobe. For cooler months, I might wear more synthetics and love that they don't fade and can last for years. Just as you say...Black IS always chic!
Dear Audrey, I love black find it a safe option and depending on details it dresses up or gives a sporty casual look. How lovely to know you were named after Audrey Hepburn, the most classy lady and trend setter ever! Best regards!! 😀🌷
I love black because I am a hot mess! I wear black tank dresses in the summer for most of the time. I might throw a colorful second layer like a kimono or cardigan or even a long white shirt. This is my summer go to quick and easy outfit. I also love a black linen look! Yes to black!
Omg 😍🥰 The first picture you showed on your video, Thats a Filipina Actress LIZA SOBERANO 🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭. Thank you for featuring her, shes so classy. I am a filipina , too.
I currently live in, and have lived in a few tropical, very humid countries, and I do have a lot of black in my wardrobe 🖤 I wear them in cotton and linen for the scorching hot days; silk for cooler days / evenings, and merino wool for places with AC!
OMGosh I love black. I just put a note in my phone to NOT buy another black dress for summer because I have 3 already. I'm high contrast with light skin and dark hair so I like to pair black with white or tan but an all black outfit is always stylish.
Interior designers and decorators recommend including touches of black in rooms in order to anchor the space. I think this rule applies to dressing as well. Thank you, Audrey.
Hello! I just wore white denim straight leg jeans with sage green silk tank top, black leather sling back sandals, black leather belt,, and Black leather shoulder bag with white floral and gems details on strap. I felt great, well balanced in color, texture and practicality. A black linen button up is added to my wishlist!
In Florida I wear black year round. Summer linen, cotton, light weight fabrics. Fishnet tops with black tank underneath. Love black. I’m 75 and love my black bathing suits👍too!
It's really nice to see someone stepping up in defense of the color black. Thank you for this video. As a matter of fact, I truly enjoy your videos about colors. Greetings from Havana. ❤
My formula for wearing black is to wear black pieces in different textures. For example, one of my work looks included black shoes, pants, and peg socks. The shoes were black patent leather flats (shine), the pants were light, thin wool, and the peg socks were black lace that barely peaked from my flats.
Hello Audrey, you are SO elegant, SO lovely, SO chic. Sometimes I feel discouraged because I am none of these things…but I love listening to your sweet voice and I always derive so much inspiration from you. ❤
Hi Audrey 👋 Thank you for making this video, I've been reluctant to wear black lately. Sometimes, it seems as if it wears me out. I love wearing black, and I'm going to use some of your suggestions and tricks❤ . Please know that you make Audrey Hedburn proud.😅
I have made a transition into an all black wardrobe these past two years and I've never looked more put-together, more confident and stylish.y favourite thing is to play with texture, like wearing a puffy tulle skirt with very heavy boots and a leather jacket. And I used to have the rainbow in my closet
I did the same thing, and have never felt more like myself in my life. I looked into seasonal analysis recently and learned I'm a deep winter, so it all makes sense. Can't believe I used to have a rainbow wardrobe when black was just there waiting for me this whole time.
I love wearing black! I used to live in Kuwait now I live in Thailand where it’s also very hot. Black for me is easier to wear for the reasons mentioned. It doesn’t show sweat, I always look put together I doesnt show food stains!
❤thank you so much for educating me on contrast. I appreciate you teaching on training my eye. I always focused on been matchy matchy & having attention to detail but when you Focused on foot wear and bag texture in its ability to change an Outfit iwas brilliant I really need more of this.
Hi Audrey, you showed great styles and principles on how to wear black. Someone who I really thought looked good in black was Carolyn Bessette Kennedy. She was quite a minimalist dresser but the cut of her clothing and the way she carried herself was a great combination! 👠 I myself can’t wear black or any dark colours in the summer because the mosquitoes love me even that much more!😂🥰🇨🇦
Hellolove..longlong before used to wear black.. the last many years can't wear black on a upper body..love to wear white or stone colours..drawn to light colors like grayish..soft..avoiding strong tones..as if i want to hide or being simple ..love the u represent all issues no matter the style..it reflect s my emotions through you..thanks n deep blossoming to your spirit❤❤
I don't use make up regularly and since my features have low contrast with rather warm undertones, black oftens drains me. Having said that, wearing black in a sheer fabric, wearing black but with a deep neckline or showing my shoulders, or in fabrics that bring some light like velvet or silk somehow build up contrast and make black work for me
Yes! I’m supposedly not supposed to wear black as a summer but I genuinely think it’s pretty flattering on me so forget that “rule”! I would love to know more about the individual items in the collages towards the end (I.e. the black dress ensembles). Can I find links somewhere?
Thanks so much for your video. Your styling ideas are so inspirational. I have a subscription to The National Theater in Washington, DC so I needed some dresses that would look chic to wear for the late spring/summer performances. I bought two black cotton eyelet dresses last spring. One has three quarter length sleeves and the other one is short sleeves. I also bought a black linen midi dress to wear. These dresses do not show wrinkles and they can be dressed up with statement jewelry and with high heels and a beautiful handbag.
These are great tips, Audrey. I also have the Audrey black cashmere sweater from Talbot's. I have the same style sweater in evergreen and camel. I have loved wearing black most of my adult life. I have been struggling wearing black as I age, though. I will have to try adjusting the silhouettes and textures since I don't wear a lot of makeup.
I love Love LOVE this video! Yay black clothes! I live where it's so hot in the summer and wear a TON of black in lighter weight fabrics, lots of black shift and sun dresses, etc. You're right, doesn't show sweat under the arms! Always looks chic. I just wear a more bright pink or red lip in summer to stand up against the black clothing.
I think if anything could convince me to wear black, it would be this video, but it's still a 'no' from me - black makes me look washed out if I wear it near my face, and if I wear it on my bottom half then I'm more limited as to what I can wear with it. I also find that black fades/looks old much faster than other colours, which isn't great when you wear your clothes for years! However, these tips are helpful to apply to dark navy, which I use as 'my' black.
Love these looks, Audrey! I do disagree though, that anyone can wear black and look good. As a yellow undertones person (spring), I would need to wear far too much makeup to cover my natural tone, and eye color can’t be changed! I can do it in cooler weather by wearing a scarf or jacket in a warm undertone. I think I can follow the principle you are teaching here, however, by using my neutral colors, like light navy or golden brown. That said, if we want others to focus on our ‘good looking outfits’ instead of how lovely we look overall, by all means we should wear colors near the face that do not enhance our natural coloring. I think this applies to you, too, as each of your outfits here is absolutely stunning, but you look pale and not glowing as you do in some of your other colors, like greens and navy. This is not because of what someone else has told me! I look sick in black, with deep shadows and sallow skin that won’t brighten enough, unless covered with stage makeup. It took me decades to figure this out and learn to wear colors appropriate to me, switching away from black, burgundy, denim, soft blue, pastel pink, etc.
Agree. I stopped wearing black a couple years ago and now, if I try to wear it, I can definitely see a difference… I look very pale and sullen. I’m doing my best to avoid black moving forward. A stylist once told me “do you wear black, or does black wear you” and black definitely wears me.
Hi Audrey, you look beautiful as always. I really enjoy your videos and style tips.Towards the end of the video when wearing the off white pants and the leather bag, where did you purchase the shoes?
my mom refused for me to wear black as a young girl/lady...good thing: it makes me look like I have the flu!!! seriously, but I can tolerate it if it's mixed up with white in a print, like zebra or fine pinstripes or dots. then it seems to be less harsh. I'm not one to slather on makeup over my skin; I feel like it's choking off oxygen to my skin! so Navy blue is my 'black'.
Your tips are always so helpful but I don’t think anyone can wear black, especially those who are Spring or Summer in seasonal color analysis, it makes them look sickly and washed out. Black looks amazing on Winters as it brings out the coolness in their skin tone.
I believe everyone can wear black. Color analysis is a suggestion not law. Spring and Summers can wear black on the bottom half of their body, and if they wear it near their face, they can wear a scarf or jewellery in their best colors. There is a reason why they drape the different near your face during color analysis.
Bright spring can wear black very well bc they can borrow from bright winter as its sister season. (Also true summer can borrow from true winter as its sister season, so they can wear black well also). I agree that it can be difficult though for soft seasons (soft summer, soft autumn) and light seasons (light spring and light summer) when near the face, especially if makeup is not more vibrant to compensate. I think these 4 seasons can wear black best at night with more dramatic makeup, or anytime just not near the face
@@DD-py5hw Because Bright Springs can handle contrast and they are sister seasons with Bright Winter they can pull off small doses of true black and white. Small blocks of black or white or linear elements of black/white can create a vibrant contrast. They can wear black and white but it’s not their best color. For example Emma Stone (a Spring) in a black dress is not as harmonious as Penelope Cruz (Winter) in a black dress.
@@sherylvandervaart6360 I agree. It’s better to wear colors that suit one’s season best near to one’s face and wearing other colors as bottoms or accessories can be a good compromise to incorporating colors that are not our best.
@@xyz_98765 I agree with you in general. However, I believe that a bright spring with highly contrasted features in terms of value (like very dark hair to fair skin) can borrow black very well. Also for bright spring, I have found that a richer very saturated black (warm undertone to the black color instead of grey/blue undertone) is much better on my skin tone.
Personally, I think black and white are the perfect neutrals and never go out of style. The point you made about black being an anchor is exactly why 1/3 of my wardrobe is black. I enjoy a lot of feminine shapes, so I use black satin skirts, black hair ties, headbands, sandals, shorts, cropped pants, mini skirts and tanks and it never fails. For reference, I live in MA
Black skirts work in the tropics, just make it the shortest possible with nice black fishnets!!!! Also, the detail of the fabric is true, we have to pay attention to not buy something that should be worn in lower temperatures. My favorite dress is black, soft thin fabric, mini skirt and backless (the designer fixed the problem of the weather) 😂😆. Love your videos!
Audrey, I have been typed as a SG, but my coloring is warm and radiant. I am lighter skinned, so all my coloring is muted, blonde hair, blue eyes. Though I have always gravitated towards black, maybe because it's easy, that is not a recommended color for me. As you mentioned would a bolder makeup look cohesive with all that I have described about myself? I do not normally like a full face of heavy makeup. Any suggestions so that black won't look "off" on me would be helpful.
I love black, but close to my face, it doesn't love me! I agree though about the make up tip, definitely. I find if it is a scoop neck top, I need to be tanned to be successful in wearing. Generally though, lighter colours are my best asset, so stick to the lower body and accessories for black items.

A simple color scarf or a statement necklace can make a black look a bit brighter
Love it Audrey! You look great! And clearly black is my favourite color haha
Black is my favorite color. Love black tops with black, white, taupe, gray and even light brown.

A red lip is beautiful with black. It is easy to look washed out with a lot of black, unless you have high-contrast colouring.
Being as Black is my favorite color, I wholeheartedly agree!!😊
I have never worn black. I prefer navy and chocolate brown which I have always found kinder to my fair colouring. Especially now I am in my 70s.

As a pale blonde I choose navy or cool chocolate instead of black.
Black does absolutely for my skin tone. Olive skin. Would love to wear it as it can look smart
Black looks good now that my hair is white, especially with silver jewelry.
Me too, and I finally feel comfortable adding that bold red lip.
Thank you for this video! I live in Texas, and don't feel like I see it as much in the summer even though it's one of my favorites.
Black is my go to color regardless of the season
I love your winter white slacks.
You are my fashion Bible Audrey.
Hello Audrey,
I always shy away from black in the summer . I will definitely wear black the summer thanks for the tips.
☺♥♥♥♥
Black skirts work in the tropics, just make it the shortest possible with nice black fishnets!!!!
Also, the detail of the fabric is true, we have to pay attention to not buy something that should be worn in lower temperatures.
My favorite dress is black, soft thin fabric, mini skirt and backless (the designer fixed the problem of the weather) 😂😆. Love your videos!
Love this -- so helpful!
Black is my favorite “color”, TFS!
I like to pair black with rose or babypink. Because I don’t like it near my face. But with some pink it gives me a soft overall look.
'... a little less than fantstic' I laughed so much with this one, I'm definitely using this :) you're amazing
the cats❤
Always worthwhile thank you Audrey...bless you
Black is king.🎉
Thank you 😊
I love your soft Voice 😍
Black with pearl earrings. Pearls always brighten the face and looks lovely and feminine.
Very inspiring!
Thank you very helpful 🌼🌟
An incredibly useful and professional video
Audrey...I love your style and channel
I have always hated myself in black but this video makes me want to give it a try even here in NC (almost as hot as Charleston).
I love your style.
