Woot! Great progress on this massive window project. Sinade’s bar is very cool. I’m looking forward to the next instalment. There is something very satisfying about destroying things to create new things.
I don’t know why but I get a deep sense of satisfaction watching the work you do. The reward is the improvement. I’m routing for you as I sit on my butt. 😂❤
You should set up a pop up tent to protect you from the sun a bit. Hmm. I think I would knock out the stones at the top where the top lintel should go. Then set in your stone or reinforced concrete lintel. Then when the top is secure, I would knock out the lower stones and reinforce the sides and bottom. I’ve watched The Irish Homestead and Life By Living’s approach to reinforcing the windows. And this seems to be a good, safer way of going about it. 😊
I hear you and that's the way it should be done but the lintel on the outside isn't holding up the rafters, it's all on the inside half of the wall which currently has my dodgy concrete 'lintel' that I made plus the huge piece of wood is now there, too. When I do the outside part the top lintel will need to rest on the sides so I need to first do the sill, then those, then the top, then infill the sides... seems to make sense... ? 😬
You are so brave to be tackling this big job. That window will be beautiful. The view will be amazing. Kristi a suggestion, make a window ledge inside for some pots of herbs or to put your coffee on cold mornings.
Ya in this case it does seem a little brave/crazy! An inside ledge would be great except I want the window to have a screen which means it’ll need to open inward… but I’m going to try to make a small ledge work. Let’s see!
Peek a boo at the beginning Kristy. I laughed. I said ‘bugger’ when the long stone broke. Little window frame…..be goooooone. I look so forward to your progress posts. You made me laugh when you stopped grinding and said to us, ‘I think this is going to work, I’m as surprised as you are’. Funnnny. You know what, the online work you’re doing is very niche, not easy to find, but there you go, another thing that you have attracted to you. KEEP ON DREAMING Kristy. Greetings from Australia. Sinead was right, you have us to fall back on when you’re feeling low. Put a smile on your dial. Glad we can give back. Hello Sinead.
Well done Kirsty. I love watching women proving it's possible to do what some men think females can't do. You're smashing it. Love from Anglesey Nth Wales ❤
Hey there! I’m as eager for your window as you are. It’s going to provide you with a beautiful view from inside your home. My motto - slow and steady wins the race. 🙂
I often stop filming when they're going because they're so loud! There's also the occasional noisy train. But I actually like both... it makes me feel more tied to the village or something.
One of the main reasons why I love your channel is that you always give lots of thought into whatever project you are about to start, even if you do have to tweak your methods along the way. And you don't give up, no matter how long it eventually takes, even years, like the plunge pool😁 😂❤
You are the one who knows what your priorities need to be. I'm happy to watch whatever you put out in your videos. I know from past experience how much longer things take than what we think they will (for me it's usually at least only 4 times longer if I'm lucky). You do what you can, when you can without hurting yourself. You will succeed. That's my grandmotherly advice (I'm 74 and a granny) from me in my armchair in Queensland.
Excellent advice, thanks! Things with the window are rolling along now… had a great day of work today and I have some exciting things lined up for tomorrow, too! 😀
That long stone broke surprisingly easy! It must have had a flaw in it. You are doing a lot, only so many hours in the day, only so much gas in the tank! Hugs from 🇨🇦
🎉Yay Portugal from Scratch! I When I first found the channel - when there was just the [wonderful] mezzanine - as far I remember there very few, if any, glimpses into that area. The view from the front is so wonderful - First the door window -now this ... Its great!
Ya the 'Bezzanine' (bed and mezzanine 😁) hasn't had much done and it's where my clothes are and is super messy so it rarely appears but I'm planning to give another little house work update soon so will tidy and show it. Thanks for sticking with me for so long!
@@PortugalfromScratchIt was the kitchen 'corner' that I couldn't visualise, was murky- so I admire that was a good suspense story line 😉 2 years ? The mezzanine was a hook for me and the first thing I remember- (it was complete already). You show it sometimes -it's still beautiful and functional 💪❤️👍
i wasn’t expecting this but: what a great idea to enlarge the window to be! very ambitious, but imagine the light and the view! Fingers crossed it turns out as you picture it. You definitely dare to take a risk.
The window project you are tackling would be a challenge for even those with experience I would think. Your patience to work through all the chipping and cutting is admirable. Kudos. The reward will come when you are looking at a beautiful view out your new window.
Yes the chipping and carving of these big stones is tough but I think it'll be key to making things easier later on. Hope it continues to go to plan. Thanks for the encouragement!
You are doing great so far Kirsty. You have a lot on your plate and I would say your online work should take priority followed by your mental and physical health. Taking your time and thinking things out carefully means less mistakes and better results for you. Hope you enjoyed the market 😊
The window view will be epic! It was super satisfying watching you remove the wooden window! This is how I organise myself working from home: First I block off in my scheduler the things that HAVE to happen, like appointments, client calls, urgent things, major work. Then I block off the fun things I'm going to do, such as there's a festival, going to that. Then I fill in what's left with 'possible things I may do'. I keep in mind that at the hottest part of the day I'll be indoors writing/working, and also, I know I have to be flexible with changes, unexpected things and sudden urges to work on something full force. As long as I get the HAVE TO things done, I don't feel rushed or behind. You're doing great!
Ah you sound so organised! I do everything with a calendar of sorts just in my head but maybe it's too chaotic now that I have this writing gig. Let's see how things go!
@@PortugalfromScratch I am because there were too many pieces to fit in without me feeling anxious. I'm old school, I need a paper journal, online ones don't work for me, I know you'll find your groove.
What a beautiful view you will have as you putter about in the kitchen. Awesome progress and the cats will have a super perch to assess what is happening in their world! Crack on!
As a long time member of #teamwindowproject (as opposed to tool shed project…which is good too by not AS good) i am THRILLED to see this plan going forward! Yeehaw!! I’m already thinking about window treatments 😂
Haha ya, it's funny that there are people excited about both! I'm hoping a friend will come in a couple of weeks for some foundation help and that the window hole will be done by then. 😁
Kirsty, you are one strong woman!!! I can't break stone with my bare hands...ok, not totally true...but certainly not without trying. Impressive!😁 Cannot wait to see the window in situ!! Love your improvements/ additions. The care and thought that you put into your projects reaps great rewards, i.e pool, gardens. Cheers from the homeland!🇨🇦🫶
You have the stone mason's skill of picking the right stone for a space, and knowing just where to place the chisel to shape the stone. Great work. Thanks for sharing. :)
It's best not to rush this project. Didn't you say this gentleman would come and help with setting the stones? The window will make a difference for the house.🙂👍👍🇨🇦
I had a friend helping early on. He shoed me how to break stones but I think with these new longer stones I have a new plan that I can do. Should be a fun challenge!

OMG, Kirsty, the suspense is intense!! 😅 But, I completely understand having lots of things on your head and needing the bandwidth to prioritize to get things accomplished, which you do in spades. You'll completely get there! BTW, you might want to put one or two other supports along the length of those long stones when you're pounding on them. The strength, when the stones are that narrow, is not great when pressure is applied along the unsupported long side. (Ergo the first break) Standing on their ends it should be fine to finish the wall next to the window, I'm pretty sure they're okay for vertical support, but if you need them for lateral support, not so sure. Thanks for the info on the stones, it’s a good reminder to be gentle! I didn’t get them at a stone store, just at a guy’s wood yard for only €5 each and I have lots so hopefully I can make at least four of them work. Hoping to put the sill in tomorrow… 😀

Feel free to chat or let silence prevail. But please I am on my knees with arms outstrecthed upwards NO MUSIC !!!!! Let nature be the background music.
Haha ya... sorry. I have to stick music in sometimes, it just makes the filming so much easier. Plus I like to listen to music, audiobooks, or podcasts sometimes when I work so those sections need music to cover that up. But I'll try to do a mix! 🙂
What you do is interesting but you need to do more sped up videos. Also less talking as you are repetitive and please stop showing us you talking to those cats. If we. Are watching it's because we're not 5 yes old but adults interested in your DIY show
I don't need to do anything. I'm just showing my life here and lots of people like cat conversations. 😁 It's not for everyone and that's ok, but it's what I'm up to occasionally and that's what I'll be sharing.

Ya me too! Taking the stones out from the inside and putting that concrete lintel in was one of the first things I did almost four years ago!
Hi Krist, who is that beautiful lady
Dunno!
@@PortugalfromScratch I like how you do things.
Thanks! My channel isn't for everyone but that's ok. 🙂
