Portugal from Scratch
Portugal
Приєднався 4 лют 2021
Hi! I'm Kirsty and I'm from Canada but left in 2001 to travel and never found my way back there to live permanently. I've since lived and travelled in a bunch of places and now I found myself in Portugal where I bought a half acre of land with with ruin on it in September 2020. In my other life I make maps of Africa capital cities and so I expect I'll be travelling between the two continents at least once a year as I try to balance work and life here in Portugal... it's a hell of a commute but I love it!
My plan is to renovate the ruin using natural materials, build a few other natural buildings, and set up a small food forest and garden using permaculture principles and this channel is my attempt at documenting the process of setting up an off grid life here. I don't really know what I'm doing and I'm learning as I go, so if this sounds interesting, please follow along and join in the fun as I figure things out along the way!

January Recap - Pergola Progress, Window Joy & Pain, & More - Off Grid
Переглядів 5 тис.4 години тому
January was a packed month here on my off grid DIY homestead in Portugal, but I was pretty focused on the pergola and made some great progress with that. I also FINALLY had the window installed which was wonderful... until it rained! I also finished off a few small projects, enjoyed some time with friends, and then had a filming disaster that fortunately won't be as bad as I thought. A lot has ...
From Creepy Barn to Tiny Home - THE WINDOW IS IN - Off Grid Portugal
Переглядів 14 тис.12 годин тому
After many years of working on my off grid barn conversion, the window is in and it's time for the GREAT REVEAL! But is it everything I'd hoped for? Nope! I love how it looks but there are a few issues to fix.. But the overarching feeling is of a sense of joy and accomplishment at finally finishing this huge project that I thought was way beyond my skills. I pulled it off and that feels amazing...
Pergola Porch & a Surprise Carpentry Project - DIY Building in Portugal
Переглядів 12 тис.День тому
The rains have come in a huge way and it's forced me to switch my plans up a bit on my off grid barn conversion. I managed to sneak in a bit of pergola stone work but then I decided to return to a long overdue carpentry project that's made a big difference to my indoor space. I also investigate some flooding in my garden and the window guy FINALLY comes to install the window! Loads of cool stuf...
Pergola Wall Stones Go Higher & I Finally Make a Step - Off Grid DIY
Переглядів 14 тис.14 днів тому
The curb appeal of my off grid DIY barn conversion in Central Portugal is slowly but steadily starting to improve! In this video I build the wall a bit higher and I finally make a decision on the steps and get one in place, which has already made the access to my house a lot less slippy and treacherous. I also get a visit from Window Guy and give an update on what's up with that, I go on a hike...
Pergola Woodwork, Important Updates & an Aloe Vera Rescue - Off Grid
Переглядів 12 тис.14 днів тому
Pergola work is pushing on on my DIY off grid barn conversion here in Central Portugal! I'm attempting a sort of weird version of a timber frame and I manage to cut a couple tenons and a mortise... but will it all fit?? Plus I rescue a sad aloe vera and it's babies and I give an update on my car and the missing window. I hope you like the video, thanks for watching! *Paypal* - paypal.me/travoho...
Pergola Plans & Starting the Build - Off Grid DIY Barn Conversion
Переглядів 15 тис.21 день тому
The pergola has begun on my off grid barn conversion in Portugal... woohoo! It's been a slow start, but I've finally got a (rough) plan and I've begun working on the small stone wall in front of the house which has involved some grinding, some brick-making, and some cementing and it's off to a good start! I also chose and sanded a few bits of wood and I have a big surprise for you at the end of...
Pergola Work Starts, Window Update, a Hike & December Recap - Off Grid
Переглядів 12 тис.28 днів тому
I've been doing a lot of talking lately and not much working on my off grid homestead, but it's time to get going on my pergola project! It's been a funny start to the year where motivation has been lacking, but I'm really to dive into some work, again. That means that I've got a shortened December recap and I've added in a hike to a really weird water feature and also a bit of work and some id...

I've been filming since the very start and that means I have 1.5 years of video to share with you that hasn't been seen! Come back to the start with me and take a look at my raw land just as it was when I first set foot on it. I'll share footage of jobs that you have...

I finally make time to give my garden a total makeover and it feels great! I blitz it in a day and a half of solid work and it was fun to work out in the sun and to see some amazing results, too! Less amazing is the crappy thing I'll need to deal with after getting an annoying surprise. It'll cost me some time and morey and it's a huge let down, too. Watch until the end to see what's up! Thanks...

There's been a break in in The Valley and we're 100% to blame! (There's a bit of swearing in this video as a result so please be aware.) Lucky Girl!! Every time I see your lemon tree bursting with fruit I get envious!! What a gorgeous tree! Limincello! Lemonade! Lemon tart! Lemon curd! Lemon scrub for the shower! Lemon cleaner! Lemon cake! Lemons, lemons, lemons!!🍋🍋🍋🍋🍋🍋🍋🍋🍋
Hey Kirsty, I got into bed tonight and realized I had a post from you I hadn't watched yet... Big treat!! This is a great post. I love the new camera angles. Your lemon tree is so nice to have. What a gift. I wish we had taste-o-vision; I'd love to try your cordial. I'll just have to make some for myself! Thank you for the recipe. I'm sorry for giving you such a hard time on the window. It sounds like a bunch of us were upset for you which probably didn't make you feel very good. I'm glad that your window guy can sort everything out. The front of your house is looking so pretty. It's great to see the blue tarp gone, the pointing finished and the window in. Soon the gravel will be filled in and then you can do the flag stones when it works for you. The stone work looks really good. The little gardens are more noticeable now too. Hopefully your olive tree will fill out and cover everything with beautiful shade. I've been wondering why he hasn't branched out more. Thank you for sharing everything with us. It's really great to see everything come together for you. I hope you have a great week. Best wishes, Angela
Love your stone work it’s looking amazing 🤩👏👏
Thanks!
I think you’re progressing very well Kirsty. I know from personal experience that a porch on a tiny house really doubles the perception of living space. I’m sure it’s a very worthwhile project. All the best 🙏🏽
Thanks! I’m very excited to have the extra bit out front. 😀
Love watching Thanks!
Thanks so much! 😀
You have already my whauw, whauww, wauwwww so far...🌹💝
Woohoo, thanks!
It is so pleasing to see the exterior begin to take shape. Finishing the pointing made a huge difference, when the patio is tiled it will be really lovely.
I think so too, thanks!
Good morning friends 🎉
Good morning!
Great job!!
Thank you!
The screen looks good. Steps are looking good and porch is developing! Nice job!
Thanks so much!
Awesome job on those steps, looks great 👍
Thank you!
Wow! That's a lot of lemons! I had a friend who loved pickled (or, preserved?) lemons. She made loads of jars and ate them over the winter as relish with her meals. There are some Mediterranean recipes on Google as well as some Indian ones. Enjoy the bounty.
It definitely is! Yep I made Indian lemon pickle last year and it was amazing. More this year, for sure!
Nice walk but I did feel your anxiety with the dogs. Woof woof.
I love walking and mushroom hunting. 🙂
Your parents must be so proud of their daughter's work ethic and fine character.
😀
Those are beautiful lemons, and so many! Can you send some to Toronto, we are having a tariff war with the Trump USA. We are trying to not buy American. Sorry to bring politics into this, but I'd love to have some of those amazing lemons. Lemon meringue pies, yum.
I live in the trump USA, and I'm trying hard not to buy any of our products, too! Please know, not everyone supports this chaos that he has created!!!!
I wish I could! 🍋
I saw somewhere if you roll on black paint of spray paint black onto your screen you ll be able to see through it better. I m sure you can google best way to do that. Also you can remove and store the screen during your colder months. I take all my screens down beginning of November thru end of February/mid March. More sunlight inside during darker months. Love all that you’re doing to your house! Windowsill is beautiful and front of house is really shaping up! Also, thank you for your videos. You give me incentive to do a lot of what I do around my house and property.
I'll probably just leave it on since eI don't have. spot to store it, but good idea.
I know you don't like cutting those stones, but it's really satisfying to watch, especially when the end pops off. The steps are looking great! I'm glad the Window guy is trying to make things right. Have Mikey and Larry adopted Sinead as their own? We have a neighborhood cat that has done wonders to knock down the mouse population. I was wondering if Mikey and Larry were acting as neighborhood exterminators for both you and Sinead.
The end pop is the best! Mikey visits the yurt but Larry stays closer to home, usually. Unless he follows Mikey down because he likes to hang out with him. Yep, no mice here. 😀
I thought you might be making ginger beer, non alcoholic. We used to make it when I was a kid. You had to hope it didn't explode while you waited for it to ferment. It started with a ginger plant, not the horticultural one, that I think used powdered ginger, and that you fed every day. I really can't remember all the details as the last time I made it was nearly 50 years ago. Now we just buy Bundaberg Ginger Beer which is made an hour or so away from me.
I definitely want to make ginger ale/beer at some point. 🙂
Wow! So much progress. The steps look so so good. The stonework is beautiful. I never get bored watching your videos. I'm at my husband to repair some collapsed stone work - inspired by watching you!!
I'm glad to hear you're enjoying the stone stuff. It's tough but rewarding work!
amazing job...looks like a proper little house now
Thanks!
If you're happy, we're happy. All the best.
Thanks!
Just enjoying the progress and admiring your energy, problem-soving and determination. I have always wondered, is there a lot, or any traffic on the little, dirt road past your house? God bless you!
Thanks! There's no car traffic as the road at the bottom isn't good, but tractors and occasional people go down it. Rarely though.
As if I'd get bored with this particular little build 🙄🤣🤣🤣🤪😁🥰❤️ jus' me tho... NOT ❤️
Glad to hear that! 😀
@PortugalfromScratch I've been waiting for this veranda build and I am totally and fully happily intrigued Kirsty!!! and really happy to see your CAR home 🤣🤣😜
Do you know anyone else the window guy has done work for? I'm glad he's cooperating with the fixes. In terms of screens, I take mine out for the winter, when I was the windows in the fall, then put them back in in the spring. He didn't have a black screen?, they 'disappear' better. Anyhoo, altogether, the window looks great. Is there anyone to trade or sell lemons to? One can only make so much cordial, haha. Your stone work is looking fabulous.
He made great windows for a friend but I didn't check for water tightness or take a close look, really. I didn't know black screens were a thing... he originally had a horrible white one and then I bought a different one but the metal-coloured one was the only option. I'll stick with this for now and whenever I need to replace it I'll look for a black one.
That rain has made the soil nice and easy to shovel up (says me watching from my recliner 😂)
It's nice and soft!
I suppose that the window guy doesn't care much about making a profit. 🤣 But that is his problem. All that matters is that you end up with a functional window. 👍
Yep, I'm hopeful!
The house looks beautiful 😮
Thanks!
Wow! I am always impressed with your ideas and your methods! I can see where you are going with the Patio and it is going to look so attractive! And the window, it looks like it makes such a difference! So exciting!
Yes lots of changes coming, thanks!
❤❤❤❤
😀
love your vision of the patio, it will be a great one. Good that you are not in clinch with the window guy, but: the screen should be black, that way it would be see through and almost invisible.
I've never seen black screens here but I'll keep an eye out for whenever I have to change it out in the future. Thanks!
The pointing of your house looks Amazing 👏
Thanks!
Lemon and olive oil salad dressing or ad parsle and garlic for a marinate. I buy lots of lemons i bet yours are better
Yum! Thanks!
Wow! The window changed the whole look of your place!! I can’t wait to see how your steps and pergola turns out. You’re doing a fabulous job!! I enjoy your program❤
Me too, thanks!
Wow, it is really coming together. Congratulations, I can totally see what you are going for.
Great, thanks!
Honestly girl, I don't know how you do all that you do! I can't get motivated past keeping up with basic housework!🥴 I had two little crafting projects to do today while watching your channel and I couldn't do it. You are amazing! Sorry about the GoPro!
Haha, you'll get to the projects when the time is right. You only see the times I'm working, not my own lazy times which are many. 🙂
@PortugalfromScratch you're very kind! I'm just so amazed at all you do, and in another country!! I'll keep watching. Love your little corner of the world!
The steps look amazing. I hope the window is perfect next video.
Me too, thanks!
you do great....
Thanks!
❤😁
😀
Exciting the progress you are making. If you are not subscribed, please click the subscribe button. It costs you nothing and helps Kristy grow the channel. Thank you.
Hi Kristy, I really like your plans for your pergola. It’s coming along nicely.
Thank you!
Your lemon tree is prolific. I can’t believe it’s full of lemons again. I did notice it full of lemons in the summer when your mom and dad visited. Your window sill looked lovely with plants and lemons on top of it. ❤ things are looking good 😍
It's an amazing tree! My parents usually come in May and I expect it'll still have plenty of lemons then, too!
Your patio area is progressing well. It certainly tidies up the area.
Yep it'll be a huge difference, it is already. 😀
Well done with the wacky brush Kirsty!! Especially in the wind!! 😀We wanted to ask how good the wifi is / phone network is where you are...do you have 5G? Asking as we are heading to your area to buy a small Quinta. Have emailed you also to get the name of a trusted realtor? Thanks Kirsty!!
I love that brush. Not sure about 5G as I think my router is only 4G but there are towers around.
Is it safe to leave your door open like that&go to Sinead's😮
Yep. 😁 Though I actually did come back up and close it as the coffee went on longer. But she's 40 seconds walk away and the area is super safe.
@PortugalfromScratch Great because as the saying goes:better safe than sorry
did you grow the ginger? I have always wanted to grow it.
No but I'd love to try!
@@PortugalfromScratch me too but we have hard winters and was wondering how hard it would be. Your gardens are always productive.
I’m soooo envious of you 🍋 lemon trees..!!! I pay so much for lemons… I love lemons…. I planted a tree and nothing happened 😢
Plant another one! Keep trying! I hope you have lemons. 🙂
Looking so good!!! Would you consider instead of filling the entire porch w gravel…. Leaving the space between the poles and up against the new wall filled w soil instead? Then you cud have a decorative planting area that would look so nice! And I imagine you can find some free wheelbarrows of soil laying around 😂
I'm not exactly sure what you mean but I think that is my plan... the area in front of the wall between the poles is already a garden and it'll stay like that. But maybe I've misunderstood?
@ yes, up a level from that. (Speaking from the perspective of looking at the house. So I’m mistaking what level the poles are on perhaps) The area up fr what you have already planted now, and behind the new wall, so it makes sort of two rows of plants.
The black screen is the best with regard to the view through the window, it is almost not visible at all.
I think that's what I have... or whatever this one is, it's way better than what he brought at first.
The pointing looks great and so do all those lemons. I think that the window issues will be resolved. Screens always make windows look different but can be so necessary and you still have the view. The steps are also looking amazing.
Thanks! The screen is actually much better than I was expecting... so I'm happy with that and I have no doubt the window issues will be resolved soon, too. 🙂
Looking forward to the finished big covered patio, and soon there will be lots of gatherings and parties. Meanwhile, freeze lots of lemon concentrates in time for summer ..😅 We already made plans for you 😂😂.
Sounds good to me! 😀
