Great job! Make sure your sill has a slight tilt to the outside for rain to fall off. Also, timber windows is the most used in Oz, followed by aluminium. Very very rarely will you see UPVC windows. Also the higher grade timber for your windows the better. Good call buying that better quality pine. You could see the timber in your stash has got fewer rings, so would not be the best choice for windows. Looking forward to seeing how it turns out! Cheers! 😊
It tilts mostly out but yes, this might be an issue but I'll be keeping an eye on it and can grin a slight channel into the one spot that might be an issue. Great to know about wood windows! And, as one person mentioned, I only have one window to care for, not loads of them so I can definitely keep on top of the maintenance. 🙂
@PortugalfromScratch I have wood windows in the US that are 100 years old. There have been times when the maintenance was neglected for 20 years. They are still functional, and I love the wavy plate glass. Maintenance is the key but since you are an attentive person starting with the best wood you can find makes a huge difference as well as the eventual installation of shade. Dual panedPVC is quick and dirty but often doesn't last as well as wood because the seal between the panes breaks down and the window gets a fog between the panes. Good choice!
Kirsty, you are now being very brave and just doing it. I am so happy and proud of you with all your guts and determination to get it to work. When I’m in a situation where I think it is too hard, I think of the pyramid builders and how they worked around ideas to get it to work. Well done girl.

Thank you! Yes, you're right on the sill but it's tricky with a rock like this so, while most of it slopes slightly outwards, there's one part that goes in towards the window. I'll monitor that and grind out a channel if I need to. For the lintel on the outside, I already have the roof supported by a concrete lintel I made in situ, The rafters only actually go to the front half of the wall on the inside... which seems weird but it's making my life easier now. There will be a long granite stone across the top but it will only need to support the stones above, not the whole roof. So I think it will be ok... I hope this all makes sense!
Ya I was thinking that perhaps it wasn't a summer thing... I only bought it because it was being sold at the market and I assumed it was the right time to plant. But it's a winter thing here, too!
I’m a little confused about your window sill. I know not all windows are created the same but shouldn’t the higher part of the sill be on the inside? And the sill slopes towards the outside a bit. The higher bit on the sill in the interior prevents water from coming in and the slope towards the outside allows any water that does make it in, to get out. Then your window frame would sit on the high part of the sill or flush on the sill depending if you are making traditional in swing or out swing casement windows. Sorry if I’m not following. 😅
You're right, the sill should tilt out to let the water drain, but this is a jaggy stone so there are dips and rises. For the most part it slops out but there are one or two bits where it dips down... I'll keep an eye on these and I can grind then down later if they're a problem. The window frame will sit inside a box that will be fastened into the stone, pushing in from behind and it'll be all sealed up with the nasty glues and silicones or whatever they use. Then the frame will go in that, I presume. I don't really know what I'm doing, maybe I've made a horrible mistake but nothing that can't be sorted out, I'm sure. 🙂 If you're talking about the part I've carved out, that's where the wooden window box will sit.
A lot of hard work you are putting into your project. I was curious to know why you decided to go with cement rather than lime when working with stone? All my best to you, keep safe as best you can.
Hi! Ya it’s been a lot of work but I love it! I wouldn’t ever use cement and stone together. This stuff is lime… HL-5 lime, but it’s not the usual NHL-5 lime, it’s something slightly different that’s more easily found here in portugal. I don’t like to use it because, though I’m not 100% certain, I think it has some small cement quantity. But it’s still lime. I mostly use lime putty but in this case I had a bag of the HL-5 lime and it’s harder and cures way more quickly than the putty so I thought I’d use it for these stone window border bits. I just feel like it’s stronger for this purpose and I had some so that’s why. But I’m not using very much and I’d never point or render with it… stone and cement is a definitely no-no for me. 🙂
@@PortugalfromScratch Good to hear, would hate to see all your hard work go to waste if it was cement and then you ended up with a damp wet room. Good luck with all the work.
sorry to butt in... @ 10:28 is that the only watering you're giving them per day? I'm probably preaching to the choir here but that's barely enough to keep them from dying and won't allow them to produce anything if you're not having regular rains - I'll see myself out now 🤭
No I sort of just did a whip around for filming. If I actually filmed watering the whole time it would be pretty dull. 😁 I have lots of water so I dish it out to the plants quite liberally.

I’m very militant about no cement on stone… nice to hear from someone else who knows! I love lime! 😀

For those cabbages
Good to know... I'll hold out hope!
sorry to butt in...
@@PortugalfromScratch hahahah great to know! congrats on the window work by the way! ❤

Where's your level?
It's there... have you watched the whole video?
Now I have. I was amazed it was level after all the adjustments you made. @@PortugalfromScratch
It look a long time to get to that... that 'perfect' stone was a saboteur!
You are getting heavy chem trails in Portugal.
We'll survive.
